I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, 1K., and Ramani, R.V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability characteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting, September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design," 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium, September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important

Mining at Phoenix is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza Pits, at a combined rate of approximately 110,000 tons per day. A portion of the ore bodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid to late 1800?s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza Pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This paper presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.

Precambien in age, the phospate deposit under study which outcrops to the south forms a synclinal consisting of only one mineralized horizon. The synclinal strikes SSW/NNE, dips from 30 to 60 NNE and is about 5 km wide. The deposit has been explored by : - trenches and pits about 50 m apart in the outcropping area ; - core drill holes forming lines perpendicular to the outcrop. These lines are about 100 m apart. On each line, the drill holes are about 50 m apart The phosphate layer is clearly visible and has then been defined from the geologicia1 description of drill hole logs. The layer has been divided into two parts : a very rich, altered part at the hanging wall and a poor part displaying opposite physical characteristics, i.e. a fresh and hard rock. With open pit mining in view, the deposit has been divided into a 3-dimension network of blocks, each block measuring 50 X 50 X 100 m. The tonnages of rich and poor ore, PO25, MgO, Si02, CaO and R2O3 grades and the tonnages of barren waste at the hanging wall and the footwall have been calculated for each block. Given the dip of the phosphate layer ranging from 30 to 60° and its relative thickness (between 10 and 15 m), it was impossible or inappropriate to carry out direct calculation by 3-dimension kriging : too many neighboring blocks to obtain sufficient date and impossibility to draw up the morphology of the layer.

The southeastern region of the United States has long been a major market area for coarse and medium particle size natural ground calcium carbonate fillers. The primary market for calcium carbonate in the southeast traditionally has been as fillers in building materials such as carpeting, joint cement and roof shingles. In these applications the economic value of the calcium carbonate in the final product is weighted more toward lessening the cost of the final product, as opposed to contributing any desirable physical characteristics. For example, in carpet backing applications the calcium carbonate filler does little more from a physical standpoint than add weight and body to the backing adhesive. The important factor in the use of calcium carbonate in carpet backing is that it can be used at high loading levels to replace the more expensive latex binder, thus lessening the cost of the final product. It is estimated that calcium carbonate producers in the southeast sell in excess of 200,000 tons (181,436,000 kg) annually for use in latex compounds for carpet backing applications.

Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant. Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-term and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

"The Confederation Line is phase one of Ottawa’s light rail transit, which consists of 13 stops and stations. The project’s center piece is a 2.5 kilometer (1.6 miles) long tunnel with three underground stations leading underneath downtown Ottawa and is constructed within feet of adjacent buildings. The downtown stations, Lyon and Parliament, are caverns approximately 16.5 m (54 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in a horseshoe configuration constructed in rock, while the third station, Rideau, is approximately 22 m (72 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in an oval configuration and constructed in mixed ground. The paper will discuss design decisions made early on in the project such as excavation method, unique construction sequencing, and equipment selection, and go on to include corresponding progress rates. The paper also documents design and construction challenges of large caverns in very close proximity to existing buildings and varying ground conditions. Finally, an overview of achieved construction milestones and a current construction progress will be presented. Station cavern excavation is expected to be completed in early 2016. INTRODUCTION The number of urban metro construction projects has certainly increased over the last decades. Cities are growing rapidly all over the planet and many are striving to keep up with the increased demand for public transportation. One of the most feasible types of inner-city transportation with the capacity for large quantities of passengers are metro (subway) systems. Still, large construction projects in dense urban areas often affect the city’s residents in mostly negative ways. During construction, residents face the obstacles of road closures, noise, dust, economic loss for businesses, and property value losses are common. In other words, individuals are directly affected by the way new infrastructures are planned, designed, built and operated. The tunneling industry offers unique opportunities of keeping these side effects to a minimum and possibly avoiding them all together. Although challenged by a variety of constraints (some of which will be discussed in this paper), urban tunneling applications offer a chance to keep cities environmentally, economically, socially, and culturally sound during construction."

Electrowinning and solvent extraction are crucial steps in the production of high-purity copper. However, safety concerns have been raised regarding the acid mist generated from the electrowinning process. The mist generated results in health risks to workers and damage to machinery and infrastructure. Currently, chemicals and pellets are used to control acid mist. However, the effectiveness of these controls may vary depending on the type of organic solvent used in the solvent extraction process, which can influence the generation of acid mist. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of organic solvents and surfactants on acid mist suppression. In this study, an electrolyte is contacted with organic solvents to simulate the solvent extraction. The electrolyte is dosed with 20 mg/L of surfactant at each contact. Acid mist testing is performed on the electrolyte separated from the organic phase at the end of the solvent extraction step. The mist collected is analyzed to determine the level of acid mist generated. The results of this study indicate that organic solvents and surfactants showed significant acid mist suppression, but with somewhat different suppression efficiencies. After first contact, Licorice and the organic, for instance, showed a suppression efficiency of up to 69.7% but its efficiency gradually decreased as the number of contacts increased.

The impact of smoothing on the definition of ore and waste boundaries using linear estimation and conditional simulation methods is discussed. The nature of transfer functions is examined including their ability to incorporate categorical data (e.g. a dominant lithology code). An Ore Block Optimization (OBO) transfer function is presented that provides a clear guide for the mining geologist. Advantages are seen in defining stockpile cut-off grades and meeting production targets such as maximizing head grade, maximizing ore tonnes or minimizing ore loss or dilution. Each of these scenarios impacts on mine profitability and grade control.

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and trucks at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

Natural resins, those derived from coal and those mined in the Uintah basin, face challenges from synthetic resins that are derived from petroleum sources and rosin or wood sources. In the past, fossil resins from coal were produced by various companies, the last one being Hercules, Inc., which sold BLACKHAWK resin until a fire destroyed the plant in the mid 1970's. Approximately four to fjve million pounds of BLACKHAWK were produced and sold mostly to the printing ink industry. Uintaite, more commonly known as Gilsonite® resin, was widely used by various industries, notably in printing inks, coatings, stains, adhesives, foundry, asphalt paving, and oil well drilling muds. Gilsonite has lost market share over the last thirty years to various synthetic resins particularly hydrocarbon resins that are derived from petroleum sources.

The study area is located in the NW of Uluborlu (Isparta). Massive limestones and alluvial deposits form the lithological units of the study area. The average thickness of the alluvium deposit consisting mainly of light brown - red colored and fine grained clastic sediments which derived from the limestone is about 10 meters. The aim of this study to investigate the uses of this alluvial sediments as tile - brick material. For this aim, disturbed and undisturbed samples have been taken from different depths in the alluvial deposits. Mineralogical compositions have been determined by XRD and major oxide contents by XRF. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the technological properties of the samples. The selected major oxide contents of samples vary between A12O3 (24.6 - 24.12 wt %), CaO (0.76 - 4.27 wt %), Fe2O3 (10.21 - 10.29 wt %), MgO2 (1.25 - 1.51 wt %). CaCO3 and MgCO3 values calculated from the geochemical analyses, are between 1.55 - 1.62 and 2.62 - 3.17 respectively. The ratios of grain size of the samples are 82 % for < 0.2 mm and 5 % for > 3 mm. Geochemical analyses and technological features of the samples indicate that these fine grained sediments of alluvial deposit are suitable in terms of uses as tile - brick material. The potential reserve of this tile - brick material has been determined as 40 million tones.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. The stability of mine roofs in permafrost zones is determined mainly by temperature and ice content. The deformation resulting from creep and temperature dependent physical properties of frozen rockmass is the dominant component of total deformation. Roof bolts can consolidate the roof and control its deformation. In this paper, a finite element model for analysis of the effects of roof bolting in a frozen rockmass is presented. The model includes the variables normally encountered when analyzing the effects of roof bolting in rocks. It also accounts for properties unique to frozen rockmass, creep deformation and the change in Young&apos;s modulus with changing temperature. The model shows that, as bolt spacing decreases, there is a trade-off between increased roof stability from increased mechanical support and decreased stability from increased conduction of heat into the frozen roof. This result was expected, and shows that, for a given set of rockmass conditions, including ice content, temperature, particle size, etc., there is an optimum bolt length and bolt density for minimum roof deflection.

Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material&apos;s life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material&apos;s lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today&apos;s society.

The metallurgical response of a deposit&apos;s various ore types usually has a strong impact on the flowsheet design of most mineral processing plants. This impacts the materials handling, equipment selection, capital and operating costs, and plant availability. Because of the rapid leaching characteristics of Chimney Creek ores a variation of the conventional gold plant, carbon columns and CIP was proposed. The proposal consisted of a washing stage which was installed between the typical leaching and CIP stages. The circuit was simulated in the lab and was modelled using a computer program to evaluate the metallurgical impact and the effect on the system&apos;s mass balances. Also, actual plant data was reviewed comparing the results that were achieved with the results that were expected.

Optimization strategies of possible interest to mineral processing are reviewed and typical strategies initiated in processing plants to date are discussed. Both On-Line and Off-Line optimization procedures have been employed by industry, assisted either by operators or by digital computers. In every case, dollar benefits have accrued.
