Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

China was once deficient in nickel and almost totally reliant on imports for its domestic needs, supplies mainly coming from Canada since the ending of imports from the U.S.S.R. in early 1960's. However, the discovery of the huge nickel/copper sulphide deposit in Jin Chuan, Gansu Province of northwestern China in late 1950's and its development and construction through the 1960's and 19701s, have much improved China's domestic nickel position. In 1985. China's nickel production has exceeded 27.000 tons, compared with only 7,000 tons in 1977. Today, Jin Chuan Nonferrous Metals Company operates two underground mines and a small open- pit; owns China's largest reserves of nickel and platinum, and the second largest reserves of copper and cobalt; and has become the most important subsidiary of China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNNC) which was established in April 1983. The Jin Chuan nickel-copper mines are located in Jin Chang City, Gansu Province, 1,700 km west of Beijing in the People's Republic of China (Figure 1). It is believed that Jin Chuan mines have the second largest nickel reserves in the world, after Sudbury basin, Canada. The deposits are situated on the north slope of the Longshu Mountains, 50 km north of Jin Chang City, and border on the southmost edge of the Gobi Desert plateau. The deposits were discovered in 1958. The total strike length of mineralized zones was approximately 6.5 km long, which was divided into four mining areas by faults (Figure 2). The Longshu underground mine of No. 1 mining area began development in 1959, with full ore production capacity of 1,000 TPD. The open-pit, also in No. 1 mining area, which was brought into operation in 1966 with ore output of 5,500 TPD, was closed down in 1982. The East Extension of the open-pit was put into operation in 1983; present production capacity is about 2,200 TPD. Nickel production of Jin Chuan mines in recent years, and production capacity of each mining operation, are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."

"Measuring mud bed level in a sedimentation device is an important control variable. Methods used to date for this purpose have had limited success providing continuous, consistent measurements at a reasonable price. This paper describes a new instrument for detecting the mud bed / liquor interface as well as bed density profiles. The state of the bed is measured directly with sensors located in the thickener. Data from bench-scale and full-scale tests show that the bed level is well defined and easily detected. In addition, full-scale testing revealed unprecedented information about thickener beds. Variation in bed density gave new insight into thickener bed dynamics, providing design and control opportunities never before possible. This novel instrument can significantly improve thickener control by providing reliable and consistent bed level measurements. It is also capable of measuring bed density profiles that can potentially identify significant operating problems early enough to take corrective action before experiencing costly shut downs. INTRODUCTION Numerous studies and papers have been devoted to the subject of thickener design and operation to achieve specified throughput and discharge densities. Mathematical models have been developed that present methods for sizing thickeners and predicting performance under varying process conditions. The compression effect of deeper beds on dewatering performance is a recognized phenomenon (Wilhelm and Naide 1981). This is one variable of many that are inter-related and influence thickener performance. For example in the steady-state, continuous operation of a thickener, if the solids feed rate increases and the bed level remains the same, the underflow discharge rate must increase with the result of solids concentration being lower. The interactions of these parameters are at the heart of thickener models. One such model (Burger and Narvaez 2007), predicts solids concentration profiles increasing downward and discontinuities between settling zones. This model uses sediment height (bed level) as a parameter that influences capacity calculations to achieve the specified solids concentration of the underflow. Knowing the bed depth is critical to maintaining stable thickener operation. Implicit in these modeling strategies are some basic assumptions such as homogeneous distribution of solids in the different settling zones, plug flow of solids through the settling zones and steady state operation of the thickener. The accuracy of these assumptions has not been verified because there has been little visibility inside the bed of full size operating thickeners. Testing of the instrument presented in this paper demonstrates that it provides a degree of visibility of the dynamics in a thickener not previously possible and indicates that the basic assumptions of the modeling strategies may not be completely accurate."

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. "Shotcrete and mesh are often installed to control ground deformation, falls and ejection between bolts. The combination of mesh and shotcrete forms a panel or plate that is typically bent by ground extruding between restraining rockbolts. The ground pressure applied (that is, the resistance of these panels to bending) over large ground deformations is important for maintaining ground support safety. This paper describes a new test device that measures this resistance and its evolution over large deformations. Mixes of shotcrete, mesh and other components that can maintain significant support pressure are desired, a characteristic described as the “toughness” of support. Results show toughness depends largely on how shotcrete is integrated with other components. Shotcrete strength is less important. INTRODUCTION Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often called upon to do this (Figure 1). Applications are especially common in mines with squeezing ground or seismic loading. The support pressure maintained during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to protecting miner safety. However, the toughness of a design is difficult to estimate. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) responded to this deficiency or “gap” by designing a full scale test device, described in this paper, and beginning a testing program. Some initial results from this program are reported to demonstrate test capabilities.BACKGROUND - TOUGHNESS Mining in ground that fails from the combination of in situ and mining induced stress is commonplace. Ground support elements are installed to reinforce such ground and preserve mine safety. Typically, the strength of support is considered key, and is used to prevent or halt yielding. However, ground movements driven by creep of weak ground or seismic loading may be impossible to halt altogether. In these cases, it is essential that support is able to yield with the ground in a safe manner while maintaining confining pressure that mobilizes the strength of rock in the immediate perimeter of the opening. In addition, it’s usually desirable to contain ground between rockbolts to protect miners from loose rock that might fall or be ejected. Shotcrete and screen are often employed, sometimes together and in combination with other support elements, to accomplish this function. A key characteristic of such a system is its ability to maintain support pressure through large ground deformations, a characteristic often called “toughness” – especially in support systems incorporating shotcrete. Toughness can be quantified as the work done during deformation (e.g. force x displacement)."

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

The new Track Etch* technique for uranium exploration has been utilized in several survey programs conducted during the last few years. The results from these programs have been very encouraging, and new uranium ore bodies have been discovered by using this new technique. The Track Etch method is being used in several exploration programs in various locations around the world. The Track Etch exploration technique utilizes small pieces of special radiation-sensitive plastic film to detect the presence of radon gas which is released by uranium ore bodies. Because of the selectivity and sensitivity of the technique, ore bodies not normally detected with other surface or airborne monitoring methods are found. Since no large equipment or special training of personnel is needed, the Track Etch technique is easily used in field operations. The basis for the Track Etch method, its application in field exploration programs, and the results obtained to date in locating uranium ore bodies is discussed.

Epidote is a common hydrothermal alteration product in many copper deposits of the southwestern United States. In many of these deposits epidote, along with calcite and chlorite, generally characterize a distal or halo propylitic alteration assemblage, but the mineral can occur within the central potassic alteration zone as well. Epidote is also a common alteration mineral in deposits formed in calcareous host rocks -- the skarn or pyrometasomatic ore bodies. Within the past 15 years, studies of the major and trace element composition of other alteration phases, principally biotite, associated with base metal ore deposits have demonstrated that some hydrothermal alteration minerals are compositional distinct from their igneous or metamorphic counterparts: However, the use of major and minor element content to identify and zero in on mineral¬ized areas does not appear to be very promising. Little work has been published upon the geochemistry of epidote from this standpoint and the results of my work suggest that a similar conclusion can be applied to epidote. My work (Fellows, 1976) suggests that epidote minerals in hydrothermal alteration suites from porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States are generally iron-rich rather than aluminum-rich. As a group, these alteration minerals differ compositionally from epidotes of regional metamorphic terrains. I ascribe these differences to the variations in the oxidation character of the respective environments. However, it appears as though the use of major element compositional variations of epidotes as an exploration tool is severely limited. Epidote is a complex calcium-aluminum silicate. "INTRODUCTIONIn tunneling projects, pre-grouting is performed with the purpose of establishing an impervious zone around the tunnel periphery. This is obtained by reducing the penetrability of the most conductive fractures in the rock mass. The main attention, besides economy of the project, is given to limiting the ingress of water into the tunnel to a certain amount during construction s well as operation period. Failure in pre-grouting process may, according to Bruce (2007), significantly affect the project in terms of safety, performance, cost and time. In this respect, determination of design parameters (pumping pressure, properties of the mix and stop criteria) affects these projects significantly. In current practices, depends on the geological conditions and requirements of the project these parameters differ widely. Weaver (1991) recommends selection of design parameters, specifically grout injection pressures, based on site specific factors and the conditions at each specific hole into which grout is to be injected (grout hole logging and water pressure test data). Houlsby (1990) correlated the allowable grouting pressure to the quality of the rock mass and the rock cover above the grouted fracture. In his methodology, grouting should be continued until the maximum pressure was attained. Later, Lombardi and Deere (1993) introduced the Grout Intensity Number (GIN), which limits the combination of injection pressure and injected grout volume in order to control the energy induced in the fracture i.e. avoid fracture jacking. Even though the GIN method was a step forward in understanding of the mechanism of the fracture deformation, there are ambiguities connected to this methodology, thus determination of the intensity number is challenging (see e.g., Rafi and Stille 2015)a.A main problem when no theoretical solution is practiced is that effects from the chosen injection pressure, such as possible increases of transmissivity and changes in total grouting time, remains hidden in the overall grouting process. The question is if a high or a low pressure should be used to fulfil the requirements of the projects at the lowest possible cost."

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. "INTRODUCTION The Jefferson Barracks Tunnel is in the final stages of design and is expected to go out to bid in the summer of 2016. The project is located in south St. Louis County along the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 13 km downstream of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The project consists of a deep sanitary sewer tunnel, a deep pump station and several intakes. The intakes will divert sanitary flows into the tunnel and the tunnel will convey the flows by gravity to the Lemay No. 3 Pump Station, which will pump them up into the Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The tunnel is about 5.4 km long and will be lined with 84-inch (2.1 m) fiberglass pipe. It drops at a gradient of 0.1 percent from south to north and will be bored through strong limestone using a hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The diameter of the TBM is anticipated to be about 3.4 m. The Owner’s original concept was for a relatively shallow tunnel so as to minimize construction and pumping costs. The preferred alignment ran close to the river, next to the existing force main, which was to be abandoned. Keeping the tunnel close to the force main would reduce the amount of shallow sewer work needed to connect the existing feeder sewers to the new tunnel. Several geotechnical investigations were performed, with shallowly focused geophysics and the borings all going exactly down the conceptual tunnel depth. Limestone bluffs run along the Missouri side of the river. These bluffs are pockmarked by sinkholes and riddled with karst. Large, well-known caves occur both north and south of the alignment. Karst features, including deep crevices and possible caves, were found in those early geotechnical investigations. Many of these features extended well below the level of the Mississippi River and would have been encountered by the tunnel. If a large crevice or cave were encountered, then the inflow of mud and water into the tunnel could have been large and possibly uncontrollable. Something had to be done to mitigate this situation. Pre-excavation grouting was considered, but the program would have been huge and extremely expensive. Using a closed-face TBM with bolted and gasketed lining was also considered, but that too was both risky and extremely expensive. The Owner could have abandoned the tunnel altogether and built a new force main, but that would have brought a whole new set of problems and was undesirable to the Owner. The last option was to move the tunnel away from the karst."

A concerted effort to determine the quantities and effects of trace elements in the environment requires the application of a number of different analytical techniques in the same or in different laboratories. The interpretation of analytical data is often difficult because of differing results between analysts or even by the same analyst at different times. Standard Reference Materials (SRM), which are certified for their trace element content and are in a matrix similar to the one of interest, can greatly increase the accuracy of analysis and the reproducibility between laboratories. The United States National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has developed a number of SRMs applicable to the determination of trace elements in environmental materials. Two of these, SRM-1571, Orchard Leaves, and SRM-1577. Bovine Liver, are excellent for biological tissue analyses. Several new standards are of value for fossil-fuel analyses. These are: SRM-1632. Trace Elements in Coal; SM-1633, Trace Elements in Fly Ash; SM-1634, Trace Elements in Residual Fuel Oil: and SRM-1635, Trace Elements in Gasoline. In cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the NBS has recently concluded an interlaboratory comparison involving analyses by more than 60 laboratories on these fossil-fuel materials. The resulu of this intercomparison and the broad range experience with the biological materials will be presented showing both intratechnique and intertechnique variations, and the sensitivities and comparisons with the values certified by NBS.

This paper presents some of the theoretical aspects as well as some results of actual plant operation of the Ty-Hukki Classifier. Dual classification steps within a unit vessel are achieved by controlled separation of the sand product under turbulant flow conditions, followed by further classification under strictly laminar flow conditions. Plant operation has shown some of the benefits of the superior sharpness of classification to be reduction of circulating load in grinding circuits, prevention of overgrinding, increase in mill feed rate and consequent reduction in cost per ton of ore.

One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State's mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. Many mining engineers considering in-place leaching for the first time are uncertain as to how to evaluate ore bodies for potential leachability. Evidence presented in this report emphasizes the critical role of permeability in such evaluations. Whether an engineer is considering leaching "tight" formations typified by the porphyry copper deposits of the southwest or the permeable uraniferous sandstones of Texas and Wyoming, permeability measurements are the keystone of any testing program. Permeability tests range from cheap and easy to highly expensive and sophisticated operations. Constant head, variable head, and pumping tests all have application in evaluating ore bodies for in-place leaching. Costs of these tests will not unduly deflate the pocket- books of most mining companies. The basic procedures for selecting and running these field tests-including preparing suitable wells--are reviewed for the benefit of newcomers to in-place leaching.

Coal mine infrastructure is rarely designed solely on the basis of ventilating the underground workings. Instead the optimization of a mining sequence, the minimization of coal quality variation, reduction of coal losses by adapting to property boundaries and geologic structure (seam inclination, roof conditions, coal thickness, etc.) or other similar considerations have formed the objective for mine plant design and layout. Infrastructure development may also reflect a desire to maximize production early in the life of the mine or to permit flexibility in mining according to market conditions. Requirements for coal mine ventilation, established by the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, have mandated changes in the traditional concepts of mine plant design in the United States. Mines, in operation prior to the passage of the Act have experienced severe limitations when attempting to adapt the existing mine infrastructure to meet the requirements of the law. In addition the increased quantities of air required, velocity limitations on trolley haulage and belt lines, the establishment of separate intake escapeways and gob area ventilation have com- pounded the inherent complexity in planning mine ventilation systems. Past practices in mine ventilation planning and design are no longer adequate. Given the complexity of today's ventilation systems, effective planning and design approaches are required. As such, the interrelationship between the overall coal mine plant design and ventilation system design is examined. An approach to ventilation system design constrained by global considerations of mine plant design, is presented. The proposed approach is, however, applicable to the design of new mine ventilation systems as well as to the modification of existing systems.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.
