[A great number of papers have been presented at various Engineering Society meetings on the Unit Train subject. Moat are descriptions of facilities that have been constructed or are abort to be built. Many describe the facility as being the World's fastest, newest, largest, incorporating the latest technology and so forth, Many are duplications of installations that have been recently constructed, sort of carbon copies but perhaps arranged differently. The trend has been to incorporate loop tracks, rotary dumpers, indexers and, of course, the snivel coupler equipped unit train. How that the energy crisis has increased the use of coal, there has been a tremendous Increase in applications for permits to construct rail to river coal loading facilities. This paper is different. It does not describe any single existing facility, but is given to alert prospective terminal owners and engineers that there are items that require considerable study and evaluation beside merely selecting an indexer, car dumper, stacker, ship or berg loader and so on. An important item is the selection of the railway car which in turn can affect the selection of the method of loading and unloading. Let us list a few of the items that should be considered and discuss the areas that require examination:]

Since the 1974 introduction of catalytic converters to automobiles in the United States, more than 150,000 kg (5,000,000 oz) of platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been used in the converters. An estimated 8 to 10 million converters are being used annually in the United States, each containing from $5 to $15 of PGM metals. In addition, use of converters is beginning in Europe which will significantly increase the quantity of PGM used. Two basic types of catalysts for converters are being used: pellet and monolithic. The pellets are small, discrete spheres or cylinders of gamma-alumina coated with platinum group metals, Figure 1. The monolithic are honeycombs of a cordierite, A13(Mg,Fe)2Si5AlO18, base coated with gamma-alumina and subsequently with platinum group metals, Figure 2. Pellet catalysts are being used by General Motors and American Motors; whereas Ford and Chrysler are using monolithic catalysts. The table below compares the PGM content and value of the catalysts.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. The Irwin Basin. (Fig. 1)* is a synclinal or shoe-horn *Figure numbers throughout refer to color slides not included with the preprint shaped basin in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, It is approximately 10 miles wide and 22 miles long at its maximum points. The surface of the land above the basin is hilly, rolling farmland,, typical of this area of Pennsylvania, and it is criss-crossed with streams and highways and liberally dotted with farm houses and communities. In-general the coal is pitched from north to south with a total drop of 610 feet'. The coal seam cross-section from east to west is bowl-shaped and rises as much as 375 feet from the low point of the bowl to-the-outcrop. Cross-sections showing coal elevations are shown on Figs, 4 and 50 Ground cover above the coal will vary from 0 to 550 feet, averaging about 350 feet throughout the area. This area is richly endowed with a history of coal mining. The first car of coal shipped cast of the Allegheny Mountains was mined in the Westmoreland Coal Company's Shady Grove (later North Side) Colliery in Irwin, Pa., early in 1853, This mine was opened in 1852 by Coleman, Hillman & Company. The coal was hauled from the mine to the freight station by horse-drawn wagon and. loaded into a then "standard" box car of 18,000-pound capacity. Coal mining in this region flourished and grew as steel production in nearby Pittsburgh demanded more and more of the high quality, metallurgical-grade coal of the region.

The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

Those of us who have directed our efforts toward the construction of tunnels have long maintained that tunnel construction is more closely an art than it is a science. We have spent time underground with hard-bitten, tobacco chewing shift bosses and superintendents who have made seat-of-the-pants decisions at the face which have been based upon their long experience underground coupled with uncanny intuition. The courage and skill of these men in the performance of their art is legendary. Without question, they have constituted the backbone of the tunnel construction industry. But just as John Henry, the steel driving man, despite his stout heart and dedication to his task, was supplanted by the steam drill, I fear that our tunnel stiff, at least as we have known him, will become an endangered if not extinct species. The reason for this is clearly that tunnel construction is slowly but inexorably making the transition from being an art into being a science, and more and more its performance is requiring the services of scientists as opposed to artists. The tunneling art has been undergoing change for many years, and yet until recently the changes have not been basic. We have improved the way we do the same old things. For example, John Henry would be flabbergasted if he saw the rock drills we use today. He would not have engaged in the legendary drilling contest with one of our modern drills, He would have simply conceded defeat.

Computerized financial models can be used in all phases of the mineral industry from setting exploration targets to projecting profit plans for producing mines. In this presentation, I will use the example of an exploration company entering a new district to trace the application of financial models through the following intermediate phases. 1. Hypothetical analysis and strategy 2. First encounter of mineralization 3. Preliminary drill results - decision process 4. Feasibility studies 5. Post-feasibility negotiations 6. Producing mine 7. Acquisition of producing mines or mineral properties. I will conclude with a brief discussion of the mechanics of the financial models that we use at Wright Engineers Limited. As we progress through the seven phases, the availability and accuracy of the data will parallel the complexity and application of the financial models. However, the same basic financial models are utilized throughout the seven phases. I will begin by suggesting that the exploration group is somewhat autonomous and has the mandate to explore in Western Canada.

The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.

New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

In order to plan the most efficient mine installation, a company should take advantage of all available information and tools. One of the first factors of a coal reserve that needs to be determined as accurately as possible is the quality of coal the mine will have access to during the life of the installation. With the aid of many types of well logs and computor analysis, we are investigating several methods of log correlation to determine such data as moisture, ash, sulphur, and BTU on an in place basis. It may be possible to determine this data more accurately in this manner than by using diamond drill cores for analysis and thus allow for a more profitable mine installation. The production of an underground mine is based on many factors, two of these being roof control and line water, where present either in the roof or coal seam. Using many of the same logs obtained from reserve and active mine areas, we have attempted to determine roof and floor characteristics such as strength, lithology, and moisture properties. Using data obtained from this program, we will make comments on possible length of bolt to be used, possible mining width, and pillar size as they would pertain to these reserves and active mine areas.

"INTRODUCTION For a long time now automation has been state of the art in production engineering and chemical engineering. The advantages of automation are, for instance, higher reliabilities of production processes, higher product qualities as well as capacities and improved safety conditions for the personnel. In contrast, many operations in mining are still conducted manually by machine operators instead of autonomous control units. One example for this is the excavation of underground hard coal which is still executed with aid of human perception. The Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) has been working on possibilities for sensor-based automation of mining machinery for many years now. Thereto the focus is set on the implementation of common material analysis techniques into ruggedized conditions as a basis for automation. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for instance is an atom emission technique which enables the determination of the elemental composition of a sample. After introducing LIBS this paper will give an overview on dust formation during the cutting process. With the illustration of a few examples the challenges in determining dust concentrations specifically such of cutting processes are explained in further detail. The final chapter will outlay the possibilities and challenges in utilizing cutting-induced dust for the automation of shearer loaders. LASER-INDUCED BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY LIBS Fundamentals LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) is a contact-free method for analyzing materials in any state of aggregate. It pertains the atom emission techniques and is based on the generation of plasma, inducing avalanche ionization on the surface of a solid material or any spot in a gas or aqueous solution. With sufficient background information on the expected elements and an additional calibration, this method can determine all present elements not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. However, this method cannot be utilized for determining the molecular composition of materials – if this feature is required a complementary method such as Raman analysis needs to be added. (1, 2)"

The importance of underground stress instrumentation cannot be minimized. It was Lord Kelvin who said that unless you can assign a number to a quantity,, you know very little about it. Most engineers will agree although this kind of statement is resented by our friends in non-technical fields. Mining is undergoing a revolution from art to science. But how can mining methods be optimized if there is no way of measuring the effectiveness of a given mining method? Do we know how effective a' support is unless we can determine its reaction to the mine structure? How do we assess the need for modifications to existing systems and supports, and how do we measure the effectiveness of such changes? Cut and try techniques are too wasteful of time and energy, and rarely provide solutions to a given problem. The purpose of underground stress instrumentation is to provide answers to some of the above questions -- answers that cannot be obtained otherwise This does not mean that laboratory studies are not valuable -on the contrary. Laboratory and underground studies supplement one another. Rock mechanics had its conception with the study of stresses in homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic models subjected to various force systems. These analyses were valuable inasmuch as they pinpointed possible sources of trouble due to stress concentrations. If the results observed underground did not always agree with the experimental analysis, it was not an indictment of the latter. More probably, the discrepancy could be attributed to the lack of similitude between model and prototype. The more nearly one can simulate underground conditions in a model, the more apt one is to produce results which correlate well-with underground observations. It is impossible to completely simulate underground conditions because all of the significant design parameters have not been recognized and evaluated. What better way can one evaluate these parameters than by underground stress instrumentation?

ITEC Environmental Colorado has begun reprocessing the tailings from old mining sites near Boulder, CO. And if the technology behind ITEC's pilot project at Gold Hill proves successful and profitable, the company plans to launch similar reprocessing operations in other parts of the state. The pilot project is under the watchful eye of state and federal authorities. They hope the technology becomes the answer to cleaning up old mining sites throughout the West. Remining and environmental cleanup on an economic basis, then, are ITEC's hopes in one the most environmentally conscious counties in the state. Clean up the mine dump sites and recycle the land, for a profit. In June 1998, ITEC Mineral Inc., ITEC Environmental Colorado's Canadian parent, acquired the Gold [ ] Hill Mill facility in Boulder County. Included in the acquisition was 4.4 hm2 (11 acres) containing the Gold Hill Mill and 283 hm2 (700 acres) of additional properties adjacent to the facility. ITEC estimates that there are about 910 kt (1 million st) of dump rock in the area. That is enough to make the operation viable. ITEC will sell the metals recovered through its reprocessing operations. However, due to low metals prices, ITEC is not expecting to make much money on the recovery of precious and base metals. Instead, the company plans to resell the reclaimed land for residential and commercial development or open space. The Gold Hill Mill site is the first of 17 sites in Colorado that ITEC Mineral hopes to clean up and recycle the land. Most notable among the sites is the historic Central City/Black Hawk mining district, which ITEC believes holds considerable potential. The Gold Hill Mill is located 14 km (9 miles) west of the city of Boulder and less than a half mile from the small town of Gold Hill. The mill was. last operated in 1992. The operation was forced to close that year due to environmental and cash flow problems. Gold Hill is in the middle of a region with more than 32 Mt (35 million st) of mine tailings. Independent geologists have' established the average grade of the Gold Hill mine tailings to be 4.5 to 5.3 g/t (0.13 to 0.155 oz/st) of gold and 28 to 44 g/t (0.83 to 1.29 oz/st) of silver. According to these studies, the Gold Hill mine tailings are five times richer in precious metals than the tailings of the Norebec Manitou property in Canada that ITEC is also remining, reclaiming and restoring. Upon acquiring the mill, ITEC undertook a refurbishing program that included adding a second ball mill. This increased the Gold Hill Mill's capacity to 180 t/d (200 stpd). The operation employs 15 people. "The Gold Hill Mill site will demonstrate the efficiency of our integrated remining, reclaiming and restoration process," said Maxine Stewart, president of Denver, CO -based ITEC Environmental. "The abundance of similar mine sites in Colorado presents a number of opportunities to bring the benefits of the ITEC system to other communities around the state." Holly Huyck is technical advisor to the Clear Creek Watershed Advisory Group. She said: "ITEC is cleaning up an orphan mine site that otherwise would continue to contaminate the Boulder Creek watershed with acid and excess metals. This is a win-win situation: ITEC gains marketable minerals while it reclaims mined land and helps to improve the watershed."

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. With the goal of improving the strength characteristics of pneumatically emplaced material used for localized subsidence control, the binding additives: fly ash, bentonite, and Portland Cement, were examined for their effect on the support capabilities of coal refuse. It was found that, within certain concentration ranges, all three of them offered some increase in the ultimate strength of the backfilling mixture; however, Portland Cement gave the greatest percentage increases. Selection of the appropriate backfilling mixture will allow for the most economical and efficient subsidence control when pneumatic stowing is employed.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.

Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.
