This report, 27th in a continuing series1, describes Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations during 1962. While the brief discussion in each section of the report presents only the highlights of Bureau work during the year, details of many investigations can be found in publications cited in this text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications. Recent trends in coal research and technology both at home and abroad were reviewed in several publications2. Bureau research, as in the past3, continued to stress improved methods of mining, preparing, processing, and using coal. The program included a wide variety of applied and basic studies for developing information useful to the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting wise conservation and utilization of our coal resources.

Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. In the subsequent discussion the following notation is used: v = mean velocity of fluid in duct, feet per second. v' = mean velocity of fluid in duct, meters per second. R = hydraulic radius of duct, feet. R' = hydraulic radius of duct, meters. S = the hydraulic slope. The basic formula for the flow of all fluids at constant density appears in the three following forms, which may be denominated: (a) The slope formula, v = CRS (b) The ventilation formula, " n = (c) The pipe formula, C is Kutter's coefficient, which is extensively applied to the flow of water in ducts and channels of all kinds; E is Atkinson's coefficient, used principally with air in ventilation problems; B is a coefficient conveniently adapted to studying the flow of water, gases and vapors in pipes. 312

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. The four major steps in the production of marketable copper are mining, concentrating, smelting, and refining. In a few cases, however, leaching takes the place of concentrating, smelting, and refining, and in others ores are smelted without being concentrated. Copper ores have been milled since the early days of mining in the United States. Except in the Michigan district, most copper ores went direct to the smelter until the so-called porphyry mines were developed. At present, although considerable leaching and direct-smelting ores are produced, the bulk of the copper ore mined is concentrated. Improved methods of concentration have kept pace with the increased tonnages of ores milled.

Mining companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of reducing operating costs while maximising throughput and profitability. At the same time, the grade and quality of treated ores are becoming poorer and more variable, resulting in suboptimal process performance.It is now widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In particular, progress in plant automation and control systems has seen a trend towards unified frameworks for control and optimisation of mineral processing plants. These frameworks seek to seamlessly integrate different roles and tasks involved in process operations - IT, automation, plant maintenance and operations. An integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximising plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis ægapÆ evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.Resolving these problems can potentially avoid unplanned downtimes, process instabilities and other operational surprises, thus ensuring optimal plant throughput and optimal process behaviour for improved recoveries. Integrating control systems and plant automation with advanced analytics to analyse and optimise processes enables operations to achieve reductions in the variability of key process parameters. In addition, early detection of equipment malfunction or suboptimal process conditions leads to improved equipment availability and reliability. Ultimately, these operational gains reflect in profitability because of plant throughput and recovery gains. "The twenty-one members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, comprising eighteen western European nations plus Canada, the United States and Japan. account for two-thirds of world steel production. The Special Committee for Iron and Steel was formed by the OECD to study trends and problems in the steel industries of member countries. The paper begins with a summary on the Organization, including an historical sketch, its structure, member-ship and objectives. The steel industry of the entire OECD is briefly described before proceeding to a more detailed discussion of various aspects of the steel industries of European OECD members, emphasizing practices and conditions that differ from those in North America. Benefits to Canada of representation at meetings of the OECD Special Committee for Iron and Steel are described."

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1982, 13 companies operated 30 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 55% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 34% of the production; Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas 18%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central and eastern States 34%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1982 was valued at over $5.5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 39% of domestic consumption in 1982, transportation 20%, building 14%, electrical 8%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 11%.

For the last 20 years mine slopes have been monitored with slope stability radars. Since 2015 a group of dedicated geotechnical engineers dedicated to remotely monitor radars around the world have detected 2000+ slope failures of different characteristics. A statistical analysis of the information gathered of these failures have been made and the summarized results are presented with some degree of analysis appropriate for the vastness of the database. The analysis considers different types of commodities, countries, mining processes, rock types, and weather conditions.

A cost analysis for two alternative contour mining methods is performed to compare their results. The methods evaluated are: 1) Front-End Loader/Truck Haulback and 2) Scraper Haulback. Before performing these analyses, output requirements and equipment needs are found based on integrating geometric limitations with material properties. The final geometric design establishes limits on clearances, congestion problems and grades (with associated running surface materials). All calculations are kept practical, with assumptions clearly stated. The cost analysis is a unique, easily utilized compilation of several different approaches incorporating cost engineering principles. The strengths of each are welded into a cohesive entity once again aimed at practical application. The results are presented in tabular form.

The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2 Lewis3 states, "The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible."

This report is the 22d in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations.2 3/ A summary of work published during 1957 and of work in progress is presented. Details regarding the subjects treated in the publications may be found by referring to articles cited in the footnotes. The objective of the coal work of the Bureau of Mines is to obtain information that will lead to improved production and utilization of coal, thus conserving a most important national asset.4 5/ Though studies of mining methods and exploration of various coalfields ma; contribute directly to improved production, no less so does the work in health and safety. The many problems relating to chemical and physical properties of coal reflect the need for an understanding of these properties for the most effective use of coal in its various fields of application and for the development of new methods of processing coal. Studies of existing and proposed processes of combustion, carbonization, gasification and hydrogenation of coal are necessary for increased efficiency in its use. Engineering service provided by the Bureau is of direct value in the conservation program in preventing waste. This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from recent empirical studies of the relationship between mine safety and characteristics of miners, mine management, and mining companies. The review is based on literature published in the United States during the period from 1976 to 1988. In addition to summarizing the empirical findings, this report discusses the implications and limitations of these studies, and gives recommendations for improving mine safety. An annotated bibliography section appears in the appendix.

Hypersonic tunnel boring (HTB) uses directed, high velocity projectile impacts to remove rock. HTB is highly independent of rock strength and targets hard, abrasive rock and variable rock environments. This paper discusses history, theory and presents test (2×2 m and .75×.5 m tunnels) field trial results and technical and economic evaluation. The HTB tests are compared against the historic ‘project REAM’ and the concept against tunnel boring machines and drill & blast in design studies for full-scale 12 m and 4.5×5.5 m tunnels. The positive results indicate that under these conditions HTB can replace Drill & Blast and Tunnel Boring Machines.

After World War II the Bureau of Mines studied methods of producing synthesis gas including a plan to gasify coal in place. Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

At the Annual Western Meeting held at Blairmore, Alta., October 1924, the writer presented a paper drawing attention -to the advantages of portable gas-driven equipment for developing isolated mining properties. This type of equipment was at that time practically in its infancy and the details of results actually accomplished were somewhat meagre. During the last year or so a number of these plants have been installed so that it is now possible to offer more definite information regarding the actual mining progress accomplished with such plants and their cost of operation in various parts of the country. This paper has been written with the idea of reviewing the work done during the past year, and to supply data which may be of interest to those wh9 are confronted with the problem of selecting equipment for development or assessment work. Because drilling operations play such an important part in mining, one of the first problems that usually confront the prospective? mine owner is the selection of the proper com-pressed-air plant. The size and type of equipment and the method of driving it require careful consideration. The size and type of equipment is determined largely by the funds available, transportation facilities, and the speed with which the programme of development is to be carried out. The selection of the proper method of drive usually depends on local conditions, such as the relative cost of various fuels, and has an important bearing on operating costs.

The concept of using specially designed slot blasts to mine through stress abutments that intersect faults, while controlling fault-slip seismicity, has come of age at Mt Charlotte Mine. Due to the high and adverse stress field and the presence of major faults, the mine is vulnerable to significant fault-slip seismicity. As mining proceeded, advancing stress abutments around various mined areas encroached on several major subvertical faults. If the sequence formed a diminishing pillar between stope and fault, the removal or failure of that pillar daylighted the fault, and often resulted in significant fault-slip seismicity. A new strategy called ‘Tight Slot Blasting’ (TSB) was developed to restrain or dampen this style of fault-slip movement. The TSB has geometric similarities to a conventional cut-off slot used to create stress shadows, but its function is different. Its objective is to trigger and control a sudden shift of the stress state on a fault from an initial stable state, through an unstable transition, to a second stable state. A TSB firing advances a long tall narrow slot through a stressed abutment between a stope void and a nearby fault, using a rapid blast with a low swell ratio, so that the slot substantially and rapidly fills with blasted rock fragments. During the blast process, the stressed rock is rapidly removed and transformed into the fragmented rock fill in the slot. The strategy deliberately allows a fault-slip episode to manifest at a chosen time and place. The tight-packed broken rock in the slot performs an essential shock-absorbing function by controlling the slip amount and rate on the fault, while at the same time the fill becomes compacted by the movement. This controls the dissipation of fault-slip energy, and greatly reduces the seismic response in time and space. A small closure across the slot occurs, with consequent relaxation and destressing of the adjacent rock mass. Stress monitoring data shows that slot creation lowers the abutment stress in the nearby rock mass, while the newly placed fragmented rock fill acts as a shock absorber, providing considerable resistance to substantial fault-slip movement that otherwise could deliver a significant seismic event. First used in 2007, the strategy has been refined to become a routine specialised practice for management of seismically hazardous situations at Mt Charlotte, with 12 successful TSBs conducted to date. Despite mining through multiple high stress abutments, seismic reactions have not exceeded ML 2.1 with any TSB firing, all remaining below the site tolerable maximum of ML 2.3. This paper presents an overview of the strategy, and five case examples of the strategy in critical stressed areas in July 2016, Sept 2017, Dec 2017 and two in Oct 2020. The strategy has successfully managed the seismicity and is expected to remain an essential part of the seismic management plan at Mt Charlotte Mine.
