Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of Solid Fuels Coordinator and under the auspices of the Coke Production Committee indicated that a very appreciable increase in pig-iron production would be obtained if pres- ent blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke. Control of the sulfur and ash content of coal used for making coke is an important factor in producing uniform coke and thus increasing blast- furnace efficiency. In some mines producing metallurgical coal, the analysis of the coal bed shows a wide range of sulfur and ash content. To obtain production of coal with minimum deviation in sulfur content sampling, grading, selective mining, blending, and surface preparation are practiced at some mines with satisfactory results. The mines selected for this study have developed these methods and are successfully producing coal of uniform sulfur and ash content. The systems employed at different mines vary according to the physical character- istics of the coal bed, the manner of occurrence of impuritites in the coal, the development plan and mining system, surface preparation and the acceptable impurity content of the prepared coal. The ash content of the coal can be controlled by face preparation and in the cleaning plant. The introduction of some method or practice at other mines might make possible the use of coal for inetallurgical purposes that otherwise could not be used for making coke because of the wide variation of sulfur and ash content.

"This paper describes the engineering and construction activities of the ""design-build"" project awarded to the joint venture of Foundation-Comstock-Janin for the construction of the plant and wharf facilities, camp site, power plant and all supporting services. As a member of the Foundation Group of companies at that time, Fenco actecl as consulting and design engineers for the project. Particular emphasis is given to the problems which adversely affected design and construction activities due to prevailing arctic conditions and the remote location of the project. The paper also describes the approach taken in the investigation of the site and soil conditions as well as the selection of the special structures for the 225,000-toncapacity fibre storage building, the wharf structure for 50,000-dwt vessels, and the 1,000-tph-capacity reclaiming and ship-loading facilities . It further covers the logistics problems and the scheduling activities related to the short duration of the shipping season, and the transportation of equipment and mate1•ials by sea as well as by air."

At the Prospectors and Developers Annual Convention (PDAC) in Toronto, Canada mining and exploration companies of all sizes were on hand to discuss the year that was and those that will be. The following is a look at some of the companies with Canadian operations that were on hand for PDAC 2009. Iamgold Corporation is a leading mid-tier gold mining company producing approximately 31 t (1 million oz) of gold from seven mines on three continents. With record revenues of $870 million ? up 28 percent when compared to 2007 ? the company is focused on growth with a target to reach 56 t (1.8 million oz) gold production by 2012. During 2008, the company acquired the Essakane project in West Africa. The project is fully permitted, under construction and will contribute more than 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of lower cost production by late 2008. Iamgold increased its reserves by 55 percent, to 385 t (12.4 million oz) and its resources in-creased by 16 percent to 821 t (26.4 million oz) in 2008. Going forward, Iamgold has three areas of focus ? West Africa, Guyana Shield and Quebec ? with seven gold operations, five advanced projects and the Niobec niobium mine included. The Rosebel Mine in Suriname is Iamgold?s fl agship property. With measured and indicated resources of 300 t (9.6 million oz), it accounts for 30 percent of Iamgold?s production. Production there was up 20 percent compared with 2007 and further production increases are expected in 2009 and 2010. Mill expansion and optimization increased throughput from 8.9 Mt/a (9.8 million st) to 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy). In West Africa, Iamgold has joint ventures at Sadiola in Mali; Tarkwa in Ghana; Yatela in Mali and Daman in Ghana. Iamgold also has 100 percent ownership of the Mupane gold mine in Botswana and the Doyon gold mine in Quebec, Canada. Also in Quebec, Iamgold has 100 per-cent ownership of the Niobec niobium mine in Quebec. Niobium is used in high strength specialty steels.

Australian underground mines produce in excess of 60 mtpa of coal. Most of these use the longwall method, and they require the use permitted explosives (which are called “permissible” in other countries) for challenges that appear during the day-to-day activities. To obtain the approval for these explosives, they should pass Testing Memorandum #2 (TM-2), which sets out the test required for each category of permitted explosive. These categories are P1, P3, and P5. With P5 being unrestricted use and P3 and P1 have conditional use in underground mines. The TM-2 test was originally set up for NG-based permitted products around 1900. With the closing of NG plants around the world, ammonium nitrate explosives were the natural replacement, and therefore these explosives need to pass the TM2. Australia does have a P1-emulsion based explosive available. For high-risk scenarios (like blasting coal), no P5 explosives are available. The lack of P5 explosives has been prolonged for more than 25 years, since the phasing out of nitroglycerine-based permitted explosive products around the world. The main problem has been that when emulsion based permitted products are tested in the deflagration cannon, the results obtained were not considered in the TM2 criteria and therefore the tests were invalid. A research work on permitted explosives began in 2005 funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The aim of the project was to address the lack of P5-type permitted explosive (and, potentially develop them further, i.e., develop safer explosives) and understand the behaviour of emulsion explosive and the results they presented in the tests. Both bureaucratic and technical barriers appeared along the way. On the bureaucracy side, the facility was shut down, reopened, and shut down again. In view of these difficulties, assistance was sought overseas. On the technical side, from the very start the results of the tests when using emulsion-based permitted explosives were not established in the criteria, ignitions occurred for trial samples that were expected to be P5-type, etc. The aim of this document is to present the painful journey in the Australian industry to have a P5-type emulsion-based permitted explosive, for use in UG coal. Also, the technical learning acquired about emulsion explosives and the ignition path of mixtures methane / air will be shown.

I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

Mining engineering curriculum has been discussed and debated in meetings and conferences, and opinions and recommendations have been published in the literature since the inception of the official degree-granting mining engineering program at the Columbia School of Mines in 1864. The deliberations have usually been heightened during the periods of boom-and-bust cycles experienced by the mining industry since the 1920s. Currently, the global natural resource industry is undergoing another cycle, called ?super cycle,? characterized by elevated prices for metals and other natural resources. The super cycle is occurring as a result of the large deficit between the global supply and demand for natural resources, due, in large part, to economic expansion and development in countries such as China, India and Brazil. Because of this cycle, there is a shortage of mining engineers in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. This circular is concerned with eight nonferrous scrap metals as they generated, collected, prepared, and consumed in California. Brief reference also is included with respect to Nevada and Hawaii. Four of these scrap metals - copper, lead, aluminum, and zinc - are of major importance and make up about 95 percent of the total value, whereas the remaining four - antimony, magnesium, nickel, and tin - make up the remaining 5 percent. For convenience, the subject matter is divided into three parts, (1) Data with respect to the collection, preparation, and marketing practices that are common activities to all the nonferrous scrap metals; (2) separate discussions and statistical data with respect to each of the eight nonferrous scrap metals in California; and (3) data with respect to Nevada and Hawaii.

A study was carried out to determine the effects of adding CaCO3, Fe, Al and CaSi2 to the ladle, rather than to the raw materials, in order to increase the concentration of Ca, Fe and Al in the final product to meet customer specifications at Simcoa's Kemerton plant in Western Australia. LA-ICP-MS, SEM-EDXRA and ICP-AES analysis of samples and controls showed that the technique is suitable for controlling minor element concentrations. Iron was successfully added, while calcium silicide with aluminium proved better than limestone with aluminium for controlling Ca and Al concentrations in the silicon

Greater mining productivity requires a more efficient cutting process. The cutting force available from today?s mining machines has been optimized with respect to machine size and weight. Researchers have shown that when employing water-jet-assisted cutting, bit forces and drum torques can be reduced significantly, which may allow mining machines to become lighter and more efficient. The Bureau of Mines has initiated a program to develop a water- jet-assisted rotary cutting system using the conventional bit assisted by a directed water jet operating at moderate pressures (3,000 to 10,000 psi). This water-jet-assisted cutting system has the potential to improve cutting efficiency without increasing machine horsepower or water usage (beyond what is presently used for dust control) or requiring fundamental changes in mining practice. IR addition to improvements in productivity, other anticipated benefits of water-jet cutting include reduced generation of respirable dust, elimination of frictional ignitions, increased bit life, reduced fines, and fewer machine vibrations. The papers presented at this open industry meeting discuss the development of water-jet-assisted cutting technology and future application of this technology to a variety of mining techniques including roof drilling and longwall mining.

The aced for reliable reserves of the essential element, manganese, has been a continuing concern of the Federal Government for more than three decades. Because of the increasing vulnerability of outside sources of supply efforts have been intensified to find a means for beneficiating United States domestic deposits. The deposits of most interest would of necessity be near, or have access to, suitable transportation to processing plants. The Georgia manganiferous iron deposits represent some 10 million tons4 of ore readily available to southern iron and steel industries, if a manganese recovery process capable of functioning in the presence of large quantities of iron can be developed. In addition, a successful method for beneficiating the Georgia ore could produce a significant quantity of high-grade iron concentrate. The Differential sulfatization process developed 47 the Bureau of Mines5 seemed to be well suited for this application, particularly because it results in low concentrations of iron in the leach liquors with relatively complete extractions of manganese. In this process, manganese in the presence of iron is preferentially reacted with sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures and subsequently extracted with water.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. In 2016 at Głogów Copper Smelter KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., after shutting down the shaft furnaces new FSF was launched. Currently, it is the only smelter with two direct to blister flash smelting furnaces in operation. The main difference between the vessels are the dimensions and production capacity. The new furnace design output is about 30% higher compared to the old flash smelting furnace working for 40 years. The paper presents a comparison of both FSFs operation, differences in technology and the way to optimize the process to maximize efficiency. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. is the only company in Poland (eastern part of Europe) that extracts and processes copper ores. It is located in the south west of Poland and this region is called the "Copper Basin”. KGHM PM S.A. consists of three underground mines: Lubin, Polkowice-Sieroszowice, Rudna, concentrator plants, a tailings pond plant, three copper plants: Legnica, Głogów and Cedynia wire rod plant in Orsk. The publication relates to the operation of the furnaces in Głogów (the plant in Głogów consists of Głogów 1 and Głogów 2 which form integrated smelting and refining facilities). In 2016, after closure of the shaft furnaces technologies in the Głogów 1, a new FSF commenced operation. The simplified process flow sheets are given in Figure 1 and 2. Technological schemes are similar, but due to the differences in them, they will be discussed separately. Głogów 1 Enriched ores are discharged and directed to the feed preparation plant. Delivered concentrates are built up on the three bedding aisles in appropriate proportions. The concentrates are distributed in even layers in one of the three aisles. Aisle emptying is done with a blending machine which cuts across the concentrate layers and collects thus blended material, sending it via belt conveyors to a storage bin. From the cross- blending machine and conveyor assembly, the mixture of concentrates is directed to drying in the steam dryer. Part of the charge is directed to the FSF and part to the roaster for carbon elimination. Known in the world roasters are used to eliminate sulfur compounds or arsenic. In the case of KGHM deposits, the aim of the process is to reduce the energy value of the feed by eliminating carbon and converting sulfur from sulfide to sulfate. Changing the nature of exothermic to endothermic material is crucial in the case of furnace operation with design performance. Roaster is a separate furnace with an innovative character.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations.
