Without doubt, driven piles are the most economical deep foundation element for a nearshore environment, providing for high bearing capacities and stiffness, quick installation times, assured quality by simple monitoring and inexpensive dynamic load testing during restrike testing. However, when the pile top elevation is several meters below water surface, questions often arise as to the most reliable and economical pile installation method. Frequently encountered, yet relatively expensive, solutions include driving inside a dewatered cofferdam, driving long piles that are later cut off below water surface, or using an underwater hammer. Arguably, the most economical solution is driving the piles with a follower or chaser. However, many foundation engineers shy away from this solution because of the uncertainty associated with the transfer of energy through the interface between follower and pile, the associated potential driveability problems and maybe the limited fatigue life of the follower. This paper will demonstrate how the driveability of a hammer-follower-pile-soil system should be analyzed prior to installation and how to model the pile-follower interface both for steel and concrete piles. As an example, results will be presented which were obtained for both steel pipe piles and precast concrete piles, driven by a single-acting diesel hammer through a steel follower for a pre-construction test pile program in Venice, Italy. While analysis of the steel pile-follower system was straightforward, for the concrete piles, the presence of a soft cushion material whose material properties changed continuously posed some difficulty. Pile Driving Analyzer® measurements and CAPWAP® analysis yielded not only realistic stresses and transferred energy values in the pile, but also reasonable model parameters for further use in a pure wave equation analysis. As a side note for clarity, the dynamic measurements and analysis results herein presented are based on the GRLWEAP and CAPWAP software. GRLWEAP is commonly used all around the world for the preparation of pile driving jobs. The program either yields a bearing graph that relates bearing capacity and pile stresses to blow count or set per blow or it predicts blow counts and pile stresses as a function of pile penetration. These results allow the contractor to estimate driving time and select an economical hammer and driving system for a safe and efficient installation. CAPWAP on the other hand is the analysis of choice once a pile has been installed and records of pile top force and velocity have been acquired during installation or during a restrike test. CAPWAP is a signal matching program which calculates for one particular impact (for example at the end of driving) the static and dynamic soil parameters. Its final results include the calculated resistance distribution, the complete stress history in the pile and also a simulated load set curve. The CAPWAP calculated dynamic soil parameters can also be used in a Refined GRLWEAP analysis to generate a calibrated bearing graph."

"INTRODUCTIONTeck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine is located 35 Km east of Marathon, Ontario. In conjunction with its 1000 tonne per day gold concentrator, the company operates an effluent treatment plant for the treatment of mill, mine and site effluents prior to environmental discharge. This paper provides a brief overview of treatment strategies and methods, employed to detoxify final effluent.WATER MANAGEMENTThe tailings impoundment basin, located 3 Km south of the plant site, provides storage capacity for all process effluents and site run-off. Basin supernatant (reclaim water) is recirculated to the plant for reuse as process water, in order to minimize fresh water consumption. As site run-off and limited fresh water intake exceed natural losses due to evaporation, reclaim water in excess of process requirements is passed through the effluent treatment (ET) facility to control tailings basin level by providing regulated discharge of environmentally acceptable effluent. (Figure 1)PASSIVE TREATMENTTo reduce treatment costs and burden on the ET facility, reclaim water is fed to the plant to take maximum advantage of natural destruction processes occurring in the tailings basin.These include: volatilizationphotodecompositionbiological oxidation and precipitationstorm water dilutionConcentrator recovery techniques (Figure 2) are directed toward maximizing gold recovery while limiting the addition and extraction of contaminants requiring disposal and eventual treatment.Currently ore ground to 90% -200 mesh is pre-aerated at pH 9.0 with lime for 18 hours prior to 30 hours cyanidation at pH 9.5 with low cyanide ion excess (70 ppm).Pre-aeration passivates cyanicides prior to cyanide contact. This reduces cyanide consumption and the formation of cyanide complexes. In conjunction with recovery requirements low pH is maintained to retard the dissolution of stibnite into its antimony and sulfide components."

The present project sought alternatives for this material through the Mining Lab Beginnings program, which was developed by Nexa in partnership with Escalab to find solutions for the company's highly complex challenges. Through the program, several solutions were evaluated, with additives for the construction market being the most prominent. Tests were conducted to confirm the efficiency of jarosite in the mixture that composes this material. With successful laboratory tests, the technology was tested on an industrial scale, where it also demonstrated its technical and economic viability. The project is now moving into the operational phase, demonstrating that circular economy is the best solution for disposed tailings.

 The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (<1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

The bearing capacity equation?"the triple N formula"? is now about 50 years old. It was developed from theory of plastic resistance of metal to a cone being pressed into the surface of the metal, superpositioned by resistance due to shear in an interparticulate medium (soil; note, we are not dealing with metallurgy), and tempered by work necessary to move the footing into the medium. The equation (and its coefficients) was "confirmed" by tests on small footings placed at or near the surface of the soil. The equation is a basic tenet of every geotechnical textbook, manual, and code. Over the years, innumerable variations of the N-coefficients and adjustments to the equation have been published. The main assumption behind the bearing capacity equation is that a shear plane develops between two essentially otherwise unaffected bodies: the main soil body and a body comprised of the footing with some soil. Moreover, the notion is that a model footing placed at or near the surface of a soil would behave proportionally or similarly to a full-scale footing, or to even a same size footing (pile toe) placed at some depth in the ground. This is not in agreement with factual observations. It is suggested that the behavior of a small or large diameter footing as well as a pile toe is governed by compression of the soil below the footing or pile toe and not by "bearing capacity".

Construction equipment is an important type of resources of heavy construction contractors. Since equipment breakdowns can cause project delays and significant financial losses, the contractors are eager to know those factors causing equipment failures directly or indirectly, related to equipment design, maintenance, and operations. Although Bayesian network can be used for diagnostic analysis of failure events or making predictive analysis, building a Bayesian network for such purpose can be difficult as the cause-effect relations can be subjective and their conditional probabilities change with a wide variety of causal factors. A hybrid approach is proposed in this paper to update the Bayesian diagnostic network structures and parameters using real life data, the conditional probabilities and cause-effect relationships can be dynamically updated with observed failure records to reflect the real life situations of a complex equipment system. A case study is conducted to show the benefits of the hybrid approach in construction equipment diagnostic analysis.

"A non-local formulation of the classical continuum mechanics theory called peridynamics is used to study driven dynamic fractures in the near wellbore region. The controlled application of pressure on the inner walls of the borehole can create multiple fractures that initiate from the borehole and propagate radially outwards. The number of fractures and their final length is primarily controlled by the loading conditions and the in-situ stress state. It is the objective of this study to use a novel numerical technique called peridynamics to investigate: 1) the influence of loading conditions on the fracture pattern, and 2) the effect of in-situ stress anisotropy on fracture propagation. In peridynamics, the momentum equation from the classical theory of solid mechanics is replaced with the integro-differential momentum equation of peridynamics. As a result, discontinuities in the body, such as fractures, occur spontaneously. The material is represented by a continuum body with material points that interact non-locally with all other points within a specified distance. Fractures evolve using a damage evolution law, wherein, damage at any point is represented as the ratio of the number of broken bonds in the current configuration to the total number of bonds in the undeformed configuration.Simulations are performed on simplified test cases and the results are compared to relevant experimental and numerical studies found in the literature. It is shown that the loading rate significantly influences the number of fractures initiated from the borehole as well as their extent. Low loading rate produces fewer fractures, whereas, high loading rates produce longer and a greater number of fractures from the borehole. The numerical method successfully predicts the fracture pattern obtained from a wide range of loading conditions. Predictions also indicate that the resultant fractures are shorter when in-situ stress is applied. Numerical results show that the fracture extension is largest in the direction perpendicular to the minimum compressive stress for the range of loading rates used in this study."

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW)promotes public understanding and education related to the mining industry. Towards this goal, the Foundation has funded several projects from donations and fundraising activities. The MFSW was incorporated in 1993 by combining the Mining Club of the Southwest and the Mining Club of the Southwest Foundation. The Mining Club began in 1971 as a social organization. It provided members of the mining community an opportunity to meet. The club also provided a means for public education about mining. In the early 1990s, the club’s efforts were directed mainly toward educational activities. And in 1992, discussions began concerning incorporation into a non-profit foundation to further the public understanding of mining. In 1983, the American Mining Hall of Fame was inaugurated to honor significant contributors to the industry and profession. The Hall of Fame serves to educate people about prominent persons associated with the mining industry, present and past. The honorees number 75. Plaques commemorate their induction and are on display at the Arizona Historical Society’s Museum in Tucson, AZ. The combined honors ceremony and banquet have remained one of the fund raising activities.

Evaluation by the Bureau of Mines of published expansion values for magnesium oxide shows significant variation in values, which may be attributed to sample variables, experimental errors, or systematic differences between measuring techniques. To eliminate the sample variable in measuring expansion, thermal expansion characteristics of a high-purity polycrystalline magnesium oxide were determined by 21 cooperating laboratories using one or more of the following techniques; X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, dilatometer, interferometer, and telemicroscope. All expansion values were corrected by the author to a single reference temperature of 25° C. Linear expansion was expressed as a power series in the form of the following equation. Expansion (percent) = [[ A + B (?t) + C (?t)2] ?t 104] The constants, A, B, and C, were determined by least square techniques for X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, and dilatometer data separately, and for combined data of all five techniques. Expansion values are tabulated from 26° C. to 1,400° C. in 2° C. intervals using constants derived from X-ray camera data. Below approximately 500° C., expansion values obtained by dilatometric and interferometric methods are significantly lower than those by X-ray methods; above 500° C., this bias decreases rapidly. Comparison of results within methods showed the least variance for X-ray camera results; dilatometer and X-ray diffractometer results have about the same variance. The average deviations, in percent, between observed and calculated expansion values among methods were approximately 10 percent from 100°C. to 300°C., 5 percent from 300°C. to 500°C., and 2 percent from 500°C. to 1,400°C. Maximum deviations were approximately twice as large in most instances.

"The Cresson gold deposit is located in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. The deposit is composed of volcanic intrusive rocks and volcanogenic sediments where gold mineralization is associated with veins and cavities within a diatremal breccia.The purpose of the current study was to:1. Determine the penetration potential of the Cripple Creek Breccia.2. Assess the relationship between penetration and gold recovery within the Breccia.Two methods were applied using a cyanide solution containing ultraviolet sensitive dye to elucidate pathways of penetration within the rock. The first involved stagnant soaking of twoinch square pieces within the solution. The second method involved column leaching of ~100kg of Breccia crushed to P80 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Samples were selected at specified intervals to capture the penetration progress of the solution. Photomicrographs and image analysis were utilized to illustrate and quantify the degree of penetration.Results indicated that the maximum penetration for the Cripple Creek Breccia (85 to 97%) due to a porous and permeable groundmass, containing large non-porous lapilli fragments. In addition, ~90% of leachable gold was recovered with only ~50% rock penetration.INTRODUCTIONDye penetration studies were first developed at SGS-Lakefield Research for the purpose of determining the fluid penetration amenability of differing rock types. The method was to place a large rock or drill core in a pan with 1 to 2 inches of a pre-mixed, water based fluorescent dye. The sample was sequentially cut after prescribed time periods to reveal a fresh surface. The cut surface was photographed under long wave ultraviolet light, and the same piece returned to the dye and allowed to sit until the next prescribed cutting."

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014. Information is given on ignition temperature , spark energy for ignition , minimum explosion concentration , explosion pressure , rate of pressure rise , and in some instances , the admixed inert dust and oxygen concentration in an atmosphere required to prevent ignition of dust dispersions . The effects of particle diameter on explosibility and pyrophoricity are also discussed .

The nonmetallic minerals work of the Bureau of Mines started with the organization of the Mineral Technology Division in 1912. A special experiment station devoted to the mining, preparation, and processing of nonmetallic minerals was established in 1923 at New Brunswick, N. J., and concentration problems on nonmetallic minerals of all kinds also were studied at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. In July 1936 the Nonmetals Division was organized, and in May 1937 the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, N. J., was moved to and made a part of the new Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md. At present the Nonmetals Division operates at three points: The Eastern Experiment Station, College Park, Md., which is headquarters for the division chief; the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and the Northwest Experiment Station, Seattle, Wash., where coal washing and preparation studies are included with those on nonmetallic minerals. Sand, gravel, and aggregate work is carried on by the Mining Division, as sand and gravel preparation are intimately associated with mining methods. The Economics Branch of the Bureau of Mines also prepares occasional papers on nonmetallic technologic subjects in connection with the presentation of statistics on a particular industry and reviews of the mineral industry in foreign countries for use in the monthly publication, "Mineral Trade Notes."

In a previous article1 the function of various fatty acids as collectors for iron ores was reported for the two alternate processes; (a) the flotation of iron-oxide minerals, and (b) the flotation of calcium-activated siliceous gangue. The selectivity of separation was shown to be markedly dependent not only on such common parameters as pH and the levels of collector and activator addition, but also on the structure and the degree of unsaturation of the acids used. The iron ores employed consisted primarily of hematite, goethite, and quartz and as the effectiveness of any one acid on the separation depends on the individual response of each constituent mineral toward the given collector, a comprehensive knowledge of the floatability of the individual minerals is desirable for the interpretation of the results obtained. The mechanism by which a collector ion becomes attached to a mineral-solution interface has been a subject of much investigation. From quantitative studies of the properties of the electrical double layer on mercury2 and on several solid surfaces3,4,5,6 , the adsorption of some flotation reagents at the mineral-solution interface is beginning to be understood. For example, it has been demonstrated from streaming potential measurements made on quartz5 and corundum6 that the interfacial electrical condition is strongly dependent on the pH. Thisoccurs presumably through the following electrolytic reaction at the interface, and in the presence of a flotation collector, controls the floatability of the solids. A concurrent investigation of the flotation behavior of goethite and of quartz carried out at the School of Mines and Metallurgy7 has shown a positive correlation with the electrokinetic behavior of these minerals. The purpose of the present investigation was to collect general information on the floatability of hematite, and to investigate the function of various 18-carbon aliphatic acids on the floatability of hematite, goethite, and of activated quartz. Electrophoretic mobility measurements, simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube, and contact angle and frothability measurements were employed. "Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

"In most of the coal washeries, Dense Medium Cyclone’s (DMC) are deployed to treat coarse coal fraction in the range of 50-0.5 mm. DMC’s are very popular due to its ability of high tonnage, ease of operation and effective separation at high near-gravity material (NGM) in feed coal. The ease or difficulty of washing is merely depending on the NGM fraction present in run of mine coal. However, the quantitative effect of NGM on DMC performance was not explored in the literature. Hence, in this investigation, the influence of NGM on DMC performance is focused. With the help of synthetically prepared coal mixture, the effect of NGM mass fraction on separation efficiency is studied in three different approaches. Firstly, by increasing the NGM coal fraction systematically from low to as high as possible; second by varying the distribution of NGM coal; and third by varying distribution of particles lying just above and below the near-gravity zone. Washability studies are also carried out to establish the theoretical yield for the prepared synthetic mixtures. Pilot-plant experiments are carried out in a 4-inch DMC with 1.4 operating separation density treating coal in the size range of 4 - 0.5 mm. From results, the partition curves are constructed by both density and size wise distributions. It is observed that at higher NGM coal fraction i.e above 60%, the performance of DMC is very poor with significant coal particles misplacement. In second approach with increased distribution at higher density fractions, the separation efficiency reduces. In the 1990?s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead?s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
