The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.

A paper was presented by Bateman Minerals and Metals at INFACONX (2004) describing a simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model for predicting the temperature and velocity distributions in all the fluid zones of a single electrode DC Furnace simultaneously with the temperature distributions in the refractory lining of the vessel. The boundary conditions imposed on the model consisted of the arc current, external surface film coefficients and ambient temperatures. The temperature and velocity distributions in the free-board, slag and metal were solved simultaneously by coupling across the interfaces between the fluids and transportation phenomena developing in the plasma arc. A simplified model was used to describe the ex-change of energy by radiation between the arc and surfaces enclosing the freeboard region. The strengths of this model were reported as being the ability to: ?Solve the different zones and transportation phenomena simultaneously without the need to transfer partial numerical results between different numerical analysis applications. ?Solve velocity and temperature distributions without assumptions regarding internal film coefficients and additional internal temperature boundary conditions. One of the disadvantages of the model was that the energy absorbed by the process was not modelled, resulting in vessel performance predictions under heat loss conditions only. Whilst this allowed potential problem areas such as localized refractory heating to be identified, the model was only capable of predicting how these could be improved by varying the overall geometry and materials of construction. This paper presents improvements in the application software and user defined subroutines of the model as follows: ?Incorporation of surface to gas, gas to gas and gas to surface radiation models to improve the accuracy of radiative heat transfer mechanisms within the freeboard. ?Incorporation of a process energy absorption model based on a theoretical temperature dependant enthalpy curve which incorporates melting, smelting and superheating in selected areas of the bath. This enables the effect of feed distribution and power to feed ratio changes to be estimated. The effects of a commercial arc at full power on the freeboard and slag can now be simulated with increased accuracy.

Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. A process is described for the recovery of valuable nonferrous metals from steelmaking dust by suiphatizing roasting using ammonium sulphate. Maximum recoveries of soluble metal sulphates achieved at optimum conditions were> 99.0 %. Selective metal separation of the soluble sulphates in the leached liquors were performed either by controlling the roasting temperature or by adjustment the pH values of the leached liquor ranging from 3.6-6.2. Either pure zinc oxide orland tin oxide could be obtained at optimum conditions, and the products were evaluated chemically and by X-ray analyses. The residues rich in iron oxide can be removed and recycled. The mechanism of sulphatizing roasting process was considered. A general flow-sheet for the overall process of treatment the steel making dust to recover its valuable nonferrous metals was suggested, which ca be applied for other nonferrous bearing materials.

As mine haulage vehicles become larger, the danger to a driver during a fire emergency is increased by the greater height of the cab above ground. Also, property damage due to fires on bigger trucks can be substantial. To solve this problem, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, through two research and development contracts with FMC Corporation, San Jose, California, has developed two reasonably priced, reliable automatic fire sensing and suppression prototype systems for large haulage vehicles. At the onset of the large mobile equipment fire protection contract effort, it was learned that fires were frequently experienced in open-pit mine haulage equipment, especially large trucks. As the size of equipment has grown, so has the hazard presented to an operator forced to leave his truck in a hurry when fire breaks out and his normal path to the ground is blocked by flames. His only recourse is to jump from the cab platform to the ground, and the one-story drop of 10 feet or more can severely injure him. It is with these factors in mind that a program was undertaken to provide a fire detection and extinguishing capability tor the large mobile equipment, especially trucks, used in open pit mines.

Cyprus Shoshone Mine uses the longwall method to extract a deep, thick, pitching coal seam in the Hanna Basin of South Central Wyoming. The immediate, and main roof rock consists of weak, thinly-bedded, silty mudstones with weak, interbedded fine-to medium-grained sandstone. Tailgate ground control has been a critical factor impacting productivity at the mine. A gateroad condition mapping program for the 11 left longwall gateroads indicated potentially severe ground control problems for the tailgate. It was predicted that the existing, secondary support pattern of wood cribs would not provide adequate support capacity. As predicted, severe deterioration of the tailgate occurred in the form of a roof cutter, sloughing ribs, and failing wood cribs. Productivity was affected and additional support was required. Shoshone personnel evaluated several options for providing the additional support needed in the tailgate. The additional support system and placement method had to satisfy several requirements with respect to access, materials handling, placement method, set-up time and support capacity. Approximately 6,000-ft. of deteriorating tailgate had to be supported. The initial wood crib support system left a 6-ft. walkway for access and construction of the additional support. This access was further reduced as the roof loaded the wood cribs. This eliminated the possibility of mechanized material handling to the construction locations. All materials would have to be transported by hand. The additional support system had to be placed quickly to stay ahead of, and keep pace with, the required longwall advance rate. It had to incorporate the existing wood cribs and provide at least 500 tons of extra support capacity. And most critically, the system could not affect longwall ventilation. Longwall coordinators and engineers made the decision to use a low density, pumpable cement known to the industry as TeksealTM, to provide the system required. A 200 psi ultimate strength mix was decided on to provide the required load capacity. The existing cribs were formed with 1-in. by 6-in. boards and brattice cloth to provide the containment. To overcome the access limitations, three boreholes were drilled from the surface to the tailgate on 2,000-ft centers. A mobile pumping station was established on the surface and the TeksealTM was pumped 900-ft. down the boreholes through a 1.5-in. steel pipe, then as much as 1,800- ft. along the tailgate entry through 1.25-in. miner spray hose. The materials required for the TeksealTM supports could all be carried into the construction locations by hand. As a direct result of incorporating relatively new methods of pumping high yield, low density, cementitious grouts, the Shoshone Mine reduced downtime due to tailgate ground control problems by approximately 70% in comparison with previous Longwall panels. The longwall set three monthly production records while mining the 11 left longwall under the deepest cover, steepest pitch, and most extreme ground control conditions ever encountered at the mine.

The use of wetlands to treat mine drainage has become increasingly common, particularly as more information is available on their operation and construction. However, the lifetime of each system is still, at best, an estimate. Treatment lifetime depends on the types of processes that provide the majority of the metal removal. Anaerobic systems (vertical flow systems) rely primarily on sulfate reducing bacteria, which reduce sulfate to sulfide and generate alkalinity. Metals can be precipitated as sulfides, and acidity is neutralized. These systems can remove over 90% of the metals and increase pH from around 4 to over 7. The bacteria will remain active as long as the system remains anaerobic and contains an adequate supply of sulfate and small chain organics. Although estimates of lifetime made on the total carbon in the system suggest that lifetime should exceed 20 years, data from field and laboratory studies show that the rate of sulfate reaction decreases with time, and that after several years rates decreased substantially. To maintain acceptable treatment, either additional organic material must be added or the total metal and acid load to the system would need to be reduced substantially. Aerobic systems (overland flow wetlands) can effectively remove metals from neutral mine drainage by reactions with organic material in the substrate. Over 90% of the copper and nickel have been removed in aerobic systems treating mine drainage in Minnesota. The primary removal processes in these systems include adsorption, ion exchange and complexation, which are finite; removal will cease unless new removal sites are generated. Two wetlands built in Minnesota have been successfully treating mine drainage for 12 years. At one of the wetlands, the annual production of new removal sites has been estimated to be equal to the annual metal input, and, as a result, metal removal should theoretically continue indefinitely.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

Recycling of spent hydrotreating catalysts (HTC) can potentially contribute towards the sustainable extraction of metal values. Treating such materials by hydrometallurgical methods to separate metals from the leach liquor of either acid/alkali media is a major step. In the present study, separation of molybdenum from HCl leach liquor of spent NiMo type HTC has been investigated by applying solvent extraction using Cyanex-923. For this, the chloride solution containing 973 mg/L Mo, 254 mg/L Ni and 1634 mg/L Al was taken as the aqueous feed. The parameters including contact time, concentration of the extractant, acid and chloride, and phase ratio were varied to investigate their effect on the extraction efficiency. The McCabe-Thiele plot suggests that > 99% Mo-loading using a 2-stage extraction process. From the molybdenum depleted solution, nickel was selectively extracted by Cyanex-301 leaving Al in the raffinate.

Tunnel excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs), has become increasingly common in recent years, despite the fact that precise evaluation of certain risks have not kept pace with the use of these machines. One of the risks easily overlooked by Engineer and Contractor alike are the effects of abrasive ground on the costs and schedule of a given project. The impacts of worn and damaged TBM cutter heads have been observed on hundreds of tunnel projects around the world. It would appear that a reliable prognosis of the abrasiveness of soils on a project would be of great importance for designers, clients and contractors alike. Several well acknowledged test and prognosis methods already exist for rock, however there is only very limited knowledge available to describe the abrasiveness of soil and its impact on soft ground TBMs. This paper will examine approaches to this problem and suggest a new approach based on a current project undergoing design.

The main forces acting on minerals in conventional size reduction units are compression, impact, attrition, and/or abrasion. Usually a combination of these forces shares the breakage action of the minerals with one or more of these forces dominating the breaking action, depending on the machine used. The present work concentrates on the behavior of quartz when stressed with compression force in a confined piston die. Several size fractions within the size range minus 10 mm to plus 0.85 mm were compressed in the piston die. The measured parameters are compression load, bed thickness, displacement as a result of compression, rate of displacement, and the size distribution of the products. It was found that the size distributions are, to some extent, different from those produced by the ball mill or the high-pressure roll mill. This is mainly because of the differences in the type of the acting forces in each case. It was also found that the cumulative weight of the distributions is reasonably normalizable with respect to the median particle size of the product. The specific energy expended is inversely proportional to the median size of the products, and the reduction ratios, xf/xp, are directly proportional to the applied compression force, and hence, to the specific energy expended. A simple model is suggested for predicting the particle size distribution as a function of the expended energy. The calculated values of the size distributions match fairly well with the experimental values, except at the very low energy levels, where most of the energy expended is consumed in the rearrangement and packing of the particles in the confined space with little or no breakage.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents a concise review on sources, processes, supply, and historical use patterns of domestic cadmium. It also covers a preliminary estimated cadmium material flow for the year 1989. This preliminary study contains information on cadmium and cadmium-bearing products in the United States. The data in this report were obtained from both published and/or unpublished sources of information. However, in order to estimate the fate of cadmium in each operation or application stage, some assumptions, judgments, and correlations were made by the USBM in an attempt to determine the material flows losses.

A program with the objective of developing a fast, accurate instrumental method of analyzing mine dust for incombustible content has been underway in the Bureau of Mines for several years. Several prototype instruments making use of a gamma-ray backscatter technique have resulted. Although extensive laboratory testing has shown that these instruments are accurate under laboratory conditions, only extensive field testing will prove their ultimate practicality and usefulness. This report shows that under most conditions these devices are at least as accurate as the volumetric method and much faster in use. Other data obtained during the same study concerning mine dust are presented; these concern moisture content, sample bulk density distribution, and some particle size distribution information.

South Africa?s Mining Industry operates in an uncertain world. The industry is buffeted by problems regarding retrenchments, unemployment, low productivity, rising costs, volatile exchange rates, commodity prices and government regulations. Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe uranium industry started in Canada with the reopening of the gravity concentrator at Eldorado's Port Radium mine in the North West Territories in 1942. In 1948, uranium exploration and processing was opened to the private sector, and the Federal government offered special pricing incentives to the industry. Eldorado explored the Lake Athabaska deposits in northern Saskatchewan, and in 1953 opened the Beaverlodge mine. Other mines in the area soon followed. In 1953 also, the deposits in the Blind River - Elliot Lake area and in the Bancroft area of Ontario were discovered. Mines and mills were quickly developed in these areas.Canadian uranium production peaked at 15,900 short tons of U3O8 in 1959. In that year, uranium exports at $300,000,000 exceeded those of all other minerals in value. On October 1, 1959, Canadian uranium operations employed 13,900 people.Up to 1956, it was a seller's market. By 1958, world production of uranium was far ahead of requirements. Accordingly, in November of 1959, the USAEC announced it would not renew it's options for continued delivery of uranium from Canadian mines. This led to the ""stretchout"" of existing uranium contracts, and many mines were shut down (see Table 1) .In the early 1970's, a commercial uranium market seemed to be developing. In Ontario, at Elliot Lake and Bancroft, mines reopened. But competition was coming from the Athabaska basin of Saskatchewan. Currently it is these high grade, open pit deposits of northern Saskatchewan which are in the forefront of Canadian uranium developments. Canadian developments since 1942 reflect the political and market forces, as well as metallurgical progress and changes in environmental standards. This paper attempts to show these process changes in broad perspective."

Underground coal mining is traditionally hazardous. Although many danger-prone human activities are now performed by mechanized equipment, this mechanization has itself brought new dangers to the underground mining industry, and the loss of life and limb has caused increased concern for mine safety. The 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act has precipitated a great deal of safety-related research on the part of the Government, industry, and private agencies. Much of this safety research has been focused on the new and varied man-machine interfaces caused by increased mechanization. Recent projects in this area have dealt with standardized controls, emergency shutdown capabilities (panic bars, strike plates, self-centering controls, "dead man" controls), and machine operator protective devices (fully enclosed cabs, canopies, side rails). There was a need for integration of the findings of current and past projects to move rapidly toward the smooth, orderly implementation of standardized operator work station designs for underground mining equipment.

The abstract discusses the increasing consumption of manganese ores and the need to utilize low-grade ores and rejects. The study focuses on developing a low-cost process using a cupola furnace to recover manganese values from these resources. The process involves smelting ore blends to produce high MnO slag and pig iron. The study investigates various factors to improve iron reduction and separation from MnO-bearing slag. The results show that the process can produce slag with MnO > 35% and Fe(t) < 5% using low-grade Mn ores. The process also achieves Fe reduction between 50 and 70%. The cupola furnace offers advantages like low cost and ease of operation, making it suitable for processing low-grade ores and rejects to produce synthetic MnO-enriched products for various industries.
