The continuous miner training system provides classroom materials training aids, and a continuous miner simulator to provide a short, intensive instruction and skills development program for training or retraining continuous miner operators. This project included refinement of training objectives, revision of training aids, improvements to the simulator, and evaluation of the entire system. This report describes the revised classroom materials and the validation of the training system.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. "Through funds made available in 1972 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (DME) and the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion, a program was initiated to recover saleable coal from mine waste dumps adjacent to the existing Acadia wash plant in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.Following evaluation of these dumps in 1972, the Acadia wash plant was modified to treat high-ash material. The first production was recorded in late 1974. By the end of 1979, a total of 738,202 t of dump material had been processed, yielding a total of 205,212 t of thermal-quality coal.The successful Stellarton operation led to considering the possibility of recovering thermal coal from other dumps. Evaluation of the Westville dumps indicated total recoverable reserves of 1,346,617 t averaging 53.8OJo ash.Parameters for plant design were defined from the washability characteristics of the dump material and the results of a bulk test. Two options were proposed; one was to use the existing plant with some modifications, the other was to build a modular mobile plant that could be used at future dump sites in the province after Westville. At the 25% ash level, the potential recovery of coal from the dump was estimated at 41% yield (by weight) or 549,679 t."

Some literatures discussed on how to recycle the various reagent, but the discussion on how to reuse the waste liquid directly is very little. How to reuse the waste liquid directly was researched in this paper. Firstly, the waste liquid should be filtrated to remove the impurity; then some quantity of H2O2 solution was dripped into the waste liquid to pretreat it; finally, CuSO4solution was added into the treated waste liquid and the pH was adjusted to about 12, then some HCHO solution was added into the waste liquid, in which the treated carbon fiber can be plated. The morphology and composition of coatings were investigated by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), the deposition rate was mensurated by the way of dissolution. The results indicated that, the plating effect was basically identical with new plating solution, and the solution is stable, and the plating rate is still about 0.8µm/h, and the copper coating is even and combines closely with carbon fiber. According to this way, the waste liquid can be reuse 5~7 times.

In the synthesis of diamond, the precursor graphite must present a degree of crystallinity to assure optimum yield and quality for the transformed crystals. X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM analyses were carried out to investigate the structural and morphologic transformations produced in natural graphite by high pressure-high temperature treatment. The present study had as its objective to characterize the morphological and structural changes suffered by a natural graphite that was subjected to high pressure and high temperature treatments in the region of diamond thermodynamic stability. The results indicate that the material that constitutes the gasket, for the deformable capsule, could act as catalyst in the graphite recrystallization process.

"An increasing number of mobile phones is increasing the number of the discarded mobile phones. Many efforts are thus being made to collect and recycle these devices. This paper is a short introduction of the recycling system of precious metals from the discarded mobile phone, currently available in Japan. Moreover, an attempt has been made to compare the energy recovery and the mechanical recycling of plastic wastes from the discarded mobile phone. The assessment has been carried out in the context of the life cycle assessment methodology (LCA). The environmental impact of each option was assessed by calculating the following impact indicators: depletion of abiotic resources (ADP), and global warming potential (GWP). 1. Introduction In 2003, the demand for mobile phones was increased since the camera was included in a mobile phone and the 3rd generation of mobile phones was introduced. In turn, the number of discarded mobile phone is rising sharply. Generally speaking, all the metallic parts of mobile phones can be recovered and recycled by using smelting and purification techniques. The recycled materials are then used to fabricate other new products."

The DSC/TG, IR and XRD analysis were used to characterize the heating phase transformation of illite, which came from Ouhai deposit, China. It was discovered that the dehydration and de-hydroxylation of illite carried out stage by stage during heating. The adsorptive water and layer-inter water were dehydrated from room temperature to 500°C; and dehydroxylated in the range 500°C~800°C. In these stages of process, illite?s layer structure kept almost unchanged. After 800°Cillite began to change into disorder structure. At about 1100°C, the layer structure of illite had been destroyed, and amorphous SiO2 and mullite crystallite appeared. At about 1200°C the structure of illite completely destroyed and mullite crystal phase had become perfect..

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

The Bureau of Mines investigated mine subsidence caused by recent underground mining, estimated the extent of damages, and formulated a procedure for evaluating subsidence costs. On the basis of the quantity of material removed from beneath the surface, bituminous coal mining currently causes more extensive subsidence problems than mining of other minerals; costs are highest in areas such as western Pennsylvania where urban and suburban development and related types of land use conflict with mineral recovery. The Bureau of Mines estimated subsidence costs, including surface damages and control costs, for a 12-county area in western Pennsylvania for 1968. Total surface damages attributable to the underground production of bituminous coal in the 1-year period were $295,000; in addition, 12.4 million tons of coal, valued at $4.3 million, was left in place to minimize potential surface damage. Of the total subsidence cost ($4.6 million), $2.7 million was classified as external or social costs, not reflected in the market value of bituminous coal; this averaged $0.05 per ton of production, or slightly less than 1 percent of the market value.

Present and emerging technologies are renewing interest in domestic rare earth elements (REE) production. REE deposits throughout the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt are being re-examined for their economic potential. In New Mexico, the mineral deposits found in this belt are associated with Eocene–Oligocene alkaline to calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Four areas in New Mexico have been examined for their REE potential. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns are similar for all four districts, even though different REE minerals are found. Crandallite, xenotime, bastnäsite and brookite are found in fluorite veins and carbonatites at Laughlin Peak. Bastnäsite was extracted during fluorite processing from 1954-1980 from the Gallinas Mountains, where samples as high as 8% total REE are found in fluorite veins. Other REE minerals include agardite, parasite, xenotime, and monazite. Allanite, thorite and as much as 8133 ppm total REE are found in fluorite veins in the Capitan Mountains. In the Cornudas Mountains, exploration along the outer edge of the Wind Mountain nepheline syenite laccolith and within phonolite dikes, plugs, skarns and carbonate-replacement deposits in Chess Draw contain as much as 3110 ppm TREE, hosted in eudialyte, monazite, bastnäsite, and calciocatapleiite.

1. The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists nine beds that arc being mined in Logan County, of which the Cedar Grove and Chilton are the most important. The Cedar Grove group, No. 2 Gas, and Alma beds have the largest remaining reserves, in the order given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 5,411 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,939 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimate reserves.

Reverse flotation process tests were conducted for marine sedimentary silicon-calcium phosphate ore in this research. The research findings showed that by adding antifoamer, a concentrate with P2O5 32.36%, SiO2 10.69%, MgO 0.67% was obtained, with recovery of P2O5 being 88.12%. Such is a satisfying result, when compared with the original mineralogical component of P2O5 26.64%, SiO2 11.51% and MgO 3.36%. When using antifoamer, the SiO2 grade of the concentrate increased 0.55%, the MgO grade decreased 0.64%, while P2O5 recovery increased 2.69% compared by adding no antifoamer. Adding antifoamer is favorable to increase the grade and recovery of P2O5. Therefore, antifoamer is necessary. Tests of synergistic reaction of antifomer indicate that the appropriate consumption of the antifoamer is 275g/t CY and 1Kg/t TWF. The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

This paper investigates the role of vertical integration between chrome ore mines and ferrochromium smelters in the location of ferrochromium production capacity in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Vertical integration is important in understanding the increasing competitive position of these two countries as observations show that an increasingly larger share of the global market has been coming from integrated producers. The paper argues that the increased vertical integration between mines and smelters in South Africa and Zimbabwe has led to a lower cost of chrome ore as an input compared with other producers. Underlying this hypothesis is the basic tenet that, more likely than not, production will take place where the costs are lowest. The paper concentrates on high carbon ferrochromium (HCFC) production in market economy countries (MEC). Using an ordinary least squares model, the study tests the relationship between low chrome ore costs and vertical integration shows a statistically significant relationship. These findings partially support the view that the control of sources of chrome ore is a major source of competitiveness. A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.
