Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of miners in the Pilbara region of Western Australia targeting channel iron deposits (CID) located in valleys, intersected by ephemeral creeks and below the groundwater table. The falling iron ore price has triggered a drive to reduce cost and maximise yield. Creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of orebodies and extend the life-of-mine.Creek diversions that are required during mining operations to access ore and provide flood protection have historically been constructed as uniform engineered channels designed primarily for flow conveyance while minimising earthworks costs; however, the design of diversions becomes more complex when they are required to function in a similar way to the existing creek system during operations and remain stable during more extreme events than would typically occur following mine closure, in accordance with current regulatory guidance. The design specifications for closure are often more rigorous than the operational phase, and could incur significant additional cost to implement retrospectively if not planned and designed upfront.The complexity of diversion design depends on site specific factors such as: the size of the creek to be diverted; hydrology; corridor restrictions; geomorphology; hydrogeology; geology; environmental and heritage values; potential impacts and the risk to operations and environment. The complex interactions of these factors must be well understood and hydraulic modelling undertaken to characterise the existing creek system, demonstrate the diversions, provide adequate flood protection during operations, and can function in a similar way to the existing system following mine closure. [Coals of low-volatile rank cannot be coked without admixing large proportions of high-volatile cod in the used type of byproduct-coke oven, because they expend excessively and. exert side thrust, which ruins the oven wells. Some medium-volatile coals also give trouble. Since high-rank coals produce a strong, blocky coke, it is desirable to have the rank as high as practicable, particularly in the manufacture of foundry coke. Accordingly, it has become the practice to mix or blend high-volatile shrinking coals with as much low-volatile coal as possible and still have a mixture that mill not deform the walls or cause difficulty in pushing the coke. Occasionally, the safe limit of low-volatile cool has been exceeded and ovens have been damaged. It is desirable, therefore, to have a reliable method of determining the expending tendencies of mixtures before they are charged into the ovens. Furthermore, coal changes somewhat in its properties as mining progresses, end therefore, mixtures found to be safe at one time may cease to be so subsequently, particularly if nearly the maximum allowable percentage of low-volatile coal is being used. ]

The South 180th Street Grade Separation underpass in Tukwila and Renton, Washington, USA, permits vehicular traffic to pass beneath Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroad tracks. The railroad tracks were temporarily relocated onto a shoofly crossing while the permanent bridges were constructed. The maximum underpass depth is approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters [m]). The majority of the sidewalls are supported using alternating reinforced and unreinforced secant pile walls. Temporary and permanent struts brace the top of the excavation. Because the groundwater is about 15 feet (4.6 m) above the base of the excavation and the subsurface materials are loose to medium dense fill, alluvium, and soft flood plain organics, the base of the excavation was strengthened and sealed using wet cement deep soil mixing (CDSM) methods. During construction, CDSM-treated ground temporarily acted as part of the railroad shoofly shoring while the remainder of the underpass was excavated on either side of active railroad tracks. The combination of secant pile sidewalls and CDSM bottom seal allowed for easy excavation, even during wet conditions. Using a 35-foot-thick (maximum) (10.7-m) CDSM layer both to act as a bottom seal and to resist uplift pressures is a unique, dual-purpose application of CDSM technology in the United States.

During a mine fire or other emergency, it may be desirable to reverse the airflow in order to provide an escapeway or to isolate a fire. Also, in colder areas, the airflow may be reversed to prevent ice buildup. When reversing main mine fans, the mine operator usually does not know what operating characteristics of flow and pressure to expect. Laboratory and field tests of vane axial main mine fans in the 7- to 9-ft diameter size range were conducted to establish forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions and at typical mine installations. The data obtained suggest that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. There is also evidence that reverse performance can be predicted for a family of blade angles and a given hub to tip ratio. Generally, quantity of air is 30 to 65% less in reverse than when operating in the normal forward mode.

MANY attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits-a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It may be urged that the microscopic structure must be taken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all test-pieces be made under the same conditions; and it is be¬lieved that the tests described in this paper satisfy that require¬ment. INTRODUCTION Preparation of this article, at the request of the Committee on papers, has been undertaken in the hope that it may stir up helpful discussion and constructive criticism. The Canadian mining industry is in the dumps and there is no use trying to deny the fact; nor does it help to say that other industries are in as bad or a worse condition. Let us face the situation honestly and see just how serious it is. The entire financial and industrial world is in a state of depression. The gravity of the case is no doubt exaggerated by contrast with the wave of optimism and false prosperity which pre-ceded it. The prevailing gloom and pessimism are just as irrational as was the former super-optimism. As far as we mining engineers are concerned, the causes are quite beyond our control, and it is the effect upon our own industry which interests us most. This effect is an accumulation of mineral products with consequent depression in price to a point where profits have almost, if not quite, disappeared. Whether this accumulation of stocks is the result of over-production or under-consumption is difficult to say, but it would seem likely that there is a combination of the two. The introduction of selective flotation has brought about a large increase in the production of zinc, a moderate increase in the production of lead, and a comparatively small increase in copper. It has turned relatively small mines into great producers, as in the case of the Sullivan, revived expiring mines like La Cananea, and brought-in new ones like Flin Flon

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

Fragmentation analysis is an essential part of the optimization process in any mining operation. The costs of loading, hauling, and crushing the rock are strongly influenced by the size distribution of the blasted rock. Several direct and indirect methods are used to analyse or predict fragmentation, but none is entirely applicable to fragmentation assessment in sublevel caving mines, mainly because of the limitations imposed by the underground environment and the lack of all the required data to adequately describe the rock mass. Over the past few years, measurement while drilling (MWD) data has emerged as a potential tool to provide more information about the in-situ rock mass. This research investigated if MWD can be used to predict rock fragmentation in sublevel caving. The MWD data obtained from a sublevel caving mine in northern Sweden were used to find the relationship between rock fragmentation and the nature of the rock mass. The loading operation of the mine was filmed for more than 12 months to capture images of loaded load-haul-dump (LHD) buckets. The blasted material in those buckets was classified into four categories based on the median particle size (X50). The results showed a stronger correlation for fine and medium fragmented material with rock type (MWD data) than coarser material. The paper presents a model for prediction of fragmentation, which concludes that it is possible to use MWD data for fragmentation prediction.

"The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

The Rexspar uranium deposit is located approximately 5 kilometres south of Birch Island, B.C. Three separate zones of commercial-grade uranium mineralization mineable by open pit have been outlined. Uranium and fluorite-celestite mineralization occur in a trachytic member of alkali-feldspar porphyry, lithic tuff, tuff breccias and pyritic schist conformably interlayered with a succession of strongly deformed greenschists and fragmental rocks that are, in large part at least, of volcanic origin. The age of these strata is not precisely known, but they are considered as part of the possibly Mississippian Eagle Bay Formation. Commercial-grade uranium mineralization is always associated with fluorphlogopite-pyrite replacement of the trachytic unit and is contiguous to, but separate from , a zone of ore-grade fluorite mineralization. In all zones, ore occurs in lenses of variable thickness and lateral extent, which lie parallel to the schistosity of the trachytic rocks and surrounding greenschists. The principal radioactive minerals at Rexspar have been identified by other workers as uraninite, uranothorite, bastnaesite, torbernite and metatorbernite. Considerable amounts of thorium oxide and widespread rare earths have been reported from all three radioactive zones. The geology of the deposit suggests that the trachytic rocks represent a highly differentiated intrusive-extrusive system in which fluorphlogopite, pyrite, fluorite and uranium-bearing minerals were deposited late in the evolution of the system by deuteric, volatile-rich fluids. The considerable amounts of thorium and widespread rare earths associated with the uranium tend to support the thesis that this element is of primary origin rather than secondary.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. At the turn of the century the keys to industrial success were coal and iron. At that time, Pennsylvania was the ranking mineral producer among the States and close to 90% of the Nations energy output was generated by coal. The growth of this Common-wealth into the greatest industrial State in the nation has been due to the huge resources of easily accessable coal found by the early settlers. It was the development of these deposits that provided the United States with a new source of fuel energy. For nearly a century, the Commonwealth was the chief powerhouse of our nation and the chief source of its industrial blood and bone. In 1928 it was truly said that coal was king in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania that year mined a billion dollars worth of coal. A single train carrying this output would reach more than twice around the world at the latitude of Pennsylvania. Coal formed nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for its four billion dollar iron and steel industry. Coal was the real reason why Pennsylvania although 32nd in size was second and not tenth or fifteenth in wealth, population and industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take-up her heritage as the greatest coal producing State in the union. But the knowledge that coal was present was not slow in accumulating. In fact the Indians were aware of its existence long before the white man arrived. They knew that many of the hills were underlain with black stones that would burn. It is reasonably certain that Arnold Viele, the first white man to cross the mountain in this State saw coal in them in 1692. But awareness was not enough. The population in these days was confined to southeastern corner of the State and the population at this time had little need or interest in the resources further inland. Pennsylvania anthracite was discovered in 1762 but was first regarded only as a curiosity. Commercial productions started in 1820. This stimulated the development of many native industries and extensive canal system and afterwards an elaborate net-work of railroads were constructed at great costs to bring the products of the hard

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

"A computational model to investigate solid/liquid phase change transitions for binary alloy under directional solidification is presented. Conservation equations are developed by using an homogeneous formulation. A second order accuracy method of time and space based on finite volume approximation has been evaluated by comparing results to spectral solution for time-dependent solutal convection developping in a melted alloy. For extended model to solid/liquid interface effects time amplification of solutal perturbation injected near the interface is described before considering solutal convection is melt.IntroductionThe enthalpy method gives a front fixing approach for energy equation without introducing coordinate transformation. The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.
