There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

(communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. This paper outlines briefly results of seismic measurements recorded in the vicinity of quarry blasting under practical operating conditions. The data cover field work done from January to the middle of August 1930, during which time records were made of 61 blasts in 19 quarries. Of the tests made, one was in biotite-gneiss, two in dolomite, two in a flintlike volcanic complex, three in gabbrodiorite, five in trap rock, and six in limestone. One quarry was in Alabama, two were in South Carolina, two in New York, four in Kentucky, five in Connecticut, and five in Massachusetts. Explosive charges ranged from 0.30 pound to 41,900 pounds, and the method of shooting varied from mud caps through hammer and wagon drill holes to churn drill holes and coyote tunnel shots.

Industrial minerals are receiving increased attention by metals, coal and other companies seeking to diversify and stabilize earnings. Each industrial mineral has a unique set (and sub-sets) of business dynamics, however, and the diversity can present a bewildering maze to the corporate planner. Shrugging off this complexity and relying on serendipity for entry opportunities often results in unsuitable acquisitions. An effective alternative used in exploration can also be applied to strategic planning. By providing focus and direction, this flexible methodology can prevent wasting corporate resources on random pursuits and result in a quicker, more satisfactory achievement of diversification goals.

Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. This has led to an exploration of how process simulation modelling could be used, in conjunction with production data, to provide a benchmark for the expected change, which could be expressed in monetary terms.The next goal, which is currently being achieved in operating plants, is to realise the greater value now available through the optimisation of cyclone configuration, which becomes practical when the confounding effects of cluster instability are removed through equal loading.CITATION:Doig, S G, Algie, S H, Lovatt, I A and Knoblauch, E J, 2018. It will look at the need to adapt and change the way, size and direction of the production blasts as the mining phase approaches the highwall position for which a pre-split has been created. Their purpose is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods and practices at various United States mines. The exploration, development, equipment, and mining of a large, oxidized-copper ore deposit by open-pit methods, the leaching of the ore with sulfuric acid solution, and the recovery of the copper as cement copper are described herein.

Melbourne Water Corporation, through the Pipelines Alliance, has commenced construction of a new drainage pipeline to provide additional flood protection within the Sandgate Avenue Main Drain catchment, in order to mitigate against the risk of flooding of Frankston’s central activity district (CAD).The project involves the construction of a 1550 m long, 2.5 m internal diameter tunnel, commencing upstream at the Monash University Peninsula Campus and traversing approximately west to the outlet located at Kananook Creek. The tunnel was excavated by a dual slurry-earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM), with the depth to tunnel crown ranging from 0.7 m to 14 m below the natural surface level. The TBM navigated 500 m radius curves, with a maximum drive length of 608 m. The tunnel lining consists of 2.5 m internal diameter, 250 mm thick reinforced concrete jacking pipe.The geotechnical conditions along the tunnel alignment consisted of mixed face ground conditions, predominately clay, with clayey sand and sandy clay and some sand deposits near Kananook Creek.This paper presents the challenges associated with the operation of the slurry separation plant during tunnel construction. In particular, the paper focuses the impact of slurry separation on tunnel advance rates, the lessons learnt during construction with regards to slurry separation and on the decision to adopt a dual slurry-earth pressure balance shield TBM. In addition this paper highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of the slurry separation requirements on a slurry TBM project prior to selecting the necessary plant.

"The installation of large (XL) diameter monopiles offshore typically requires expensive and specialist plant, equipment and vessels. Due to the increasing size (weight, diameter and length) of the foundations, in order to mitigate installation risk, the use of large diameter drills is becoming an increasing requirement.Project developers often try to avoid drilling operations due to the time associated with the drilling process. This restricts projects in terms of location and it also overlooks the additional engineering benefits drilling can bring to monopile foundation design e.g. reduced foundation material and better fatigue design life.By comparing the lessons learned of three milestone overwater drilling projects; methods of maximising drill speed and decreasing drilling process time is established. Particular emphasis is put on pile internal relief drilling in a process known as Drive-Drill-Drive (DDD).The milestone overwater drilling projects are North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) (2003); Flamanville EPR cooling water outlet shaft (2008); and Gwynt-y-Mor OWF (2014).By evaluating the effect of foundation pile diameter on drilling process times, example foundation installation costs are derived and used to show that incorporating drilling as part of a process may not be cost prohibitive to projectsContinued advances in drill technology, and drilling rates of penetration, combined with an integrated approach to foundation design, challenge whether hammering only is always the optimal solution for XL monopile installation."

For many years Illinois has been one of the leading coal producers in the United States and as such its safety record has compared very well with the other large coal producing States , both in tons produced and millions of man -hours of exposure per fatal accident . ( See Table 25 in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 293. ) During the 10-year period from 1917 to 1926 , inclusive , the average production in the United States per fatal accident was 278 , 109 tons . The aver age for the State of Illinois for the same period was 409,249 tons . Illinois produced 450,464 tons per fatal accident, and in 1928 produced 390,630, tons , or an average of 419,721 tons for the 12- year period from 1917 to 1928 , inclusive . In 1927 During the year 1929 , the shipping mines of the State made a decided improvement in their record over any previous year . Table 1 shows the monthly production and the tons produced per fatal accident . During 1928 and 1929 safety work was actively carried on in Illinois . Safety meetings were held with mine officials , representatives of the State. De partment of Mines , and the United States Bureau of Mines . At these meetings mine hazards and accidents were discussed and remedies suggested for : their elimination in the future . It is believed that first - aid training was to a considerable extent instrumental in reducing accidents and in making the good safety records in Illinois during 1928 and 1929. During these years ( as well as in 1926 and 1927 to a somewhat less extont ) en intensive rirst-aid training campaign was con ducted in Illinois by the officials and members of the United Mine Workers of America , coal companies, State Department of Mines and Minerals , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines , Every first -aid class was made a safety meeting ; where accidents and general safety were discussed freely while teaching first aid. During this time , anproximately 25,000 persons were trained in first aid, and 17 coal companies were issued certificates for having 100 per cent of their employees. trained in first aid. Since January 1 , 1926 , more than 40,000 have received first -aid training in and around Illinois mines , and including those who received training previous to this date , it is believed that at least 90 per cent of the miners in Illinois have received first -aid training . This state ment is based on the fact that the labor turnover in Illinois is not large .

In this paper we examine, through pilot-scale testing, the possibility of operating a circuit comprised of two stages of HPGR comminution, followed by grinding through a horizontal stirred mill. In order to assess whether the novel circuit design could achieve the reduced energy requirements indicated in the literature, two more-established circuits, a cone crusher / ball mill and an HPGR / ball mill, were examined using a combination of testing and flowsheet simulation. The results showed that, based solely on the specific energy requirements for comminution, the HPGR / stirred mill circuit achieved a reduction of 9.2% and 16.7% over the HPGR / ball mill and cone crusher / ball mill circuits, respectively.

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The benefits of the programme for Anglo American Platinum have been tangible, and will be discussed in the paper. Keywords: graduate training, technology transfer

Sampling and metallurgical test work during various phases of engineering?studies?is of?paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flow sheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical test work supports the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development.The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical test work are just as important as the metallurgical test work itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should take into account the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical test work program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design.Snowden has observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical test work carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Some designs are often the result of the plant design based on benchmarks of apparently similar orebodies or buoyant metal prices supporting cash flows until rectifications can be implemented.The paper will discuss important aspects of sampling and test work required for engineering studies in designing process plants based on industrial case studies.CITATION:Guresin, N, Lorenzen, L, Dominy, S C, Muller, H and Cooper, A, 2012. The corrosion behaviour of 304L stainless steel laser-cladded with various amounts of ruthenium (Ru) was evaluated in solutions of sulphuric acid and sulphuric acid plus sodium chloride at 25°C and 45°C by open-circuit potential and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests. In general, the addition of Ru to the stainless steel increased its corrosion resistance in 1 M H2SO4, as well as in 1 M H2SO4 plus 1 wt% NaCl. This was observed for a number of parameters such as corrosion rate, corrosion potential, open-circuit potential, and current density. However, increasing the amount of Ru added beyond a certain level did not result in further improvement in corrosion protection. For each environment there is an optimal Ru concentration for the best corrosion protection. For example, in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C, 2.44 wt% Ru shows the least active surface in terms of corrosion. Further research into ruthenium coatings on stainless steels is recommended.

A series of economic evaluations of processes for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina from low- grade aluminous materials is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative processing costs . The two processes considered in this evaluation are concerned with the recovery of alumina from clay through the formation of ammonium alum . In the first process , dehydrated clay is leached with ammonium bisulfate solution ; in the second process , clay is baked with ammonium sulfate and then leached with water containing a small quantity of sulfuric acid . After the alumina is dissolved by either of these methods , the iron is reduced to the ferrous state to avoid crystallization of ferric sulfate with the alum . The recovery of pure alum requires two crystallization steps . The alum crystals are then redissolved and precipitated with ammonia to produce alumina hydrate , which is calcined to a - alumina . These evaluations are based on published work , and the proposed plants are designed for a capacity of 1,000 tons of alumina per day . The estimated operating cost per ton of alumina for the bisulfate leaching process is $ 117.06 , and for the sulfate baking process , $ 109.26 . Using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 , the estimated fixed capital costs , in the same order , are $ 158 million and $ 146 million . Under current economic conditions , these two processes are not competitive with the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite . Since small improvements will not reduce costs sufficiently to approach competitive costs , future research work with these processes should be confined to areas likely to result in major cost reductions .

PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

In June 1998, the world's largest grinding mill, the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter 20 MW Cadia gearless SAG mill, was commissioned. This was a leap of over40% above the largest operating SAG mill. A significant saving in capital cost gave the incentive necessary for a single mill line at Cadia, resulting in the selection of the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter mill. Now, after 18 months of operation, this paper will review the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation, and operation of this mill.

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

The Bureau of Mines devised a test nipple for the field study of corrosion in the condensate-return lines of Federal heating plants. Corrosion surveys, made with this device, showed that the deterioration of the piping was caused principally by carbonic acid in the steam condensate. Corrosion problems were brought under control when the carbonic acid concentration in the condensate was decreased. In many instances, this was effected by decreasing the total carbon dioxide content of the feedwater; in others, the condensate acidity was neutralized with volatile, alkaline chemicals. Filming treatment with octadecylamine, reported successful in controlling return-line corrosion in industry, was much less effective in Federal area-heating plants. Laboratory study by the Bureau disclosed that octadecylamine is unstable in heating systems. Analytical methods were developed for this chemical and its degradation products in heating-plant condensate. Field surveys, in using these methods, confirmed the instability of the filming material. Laboratory tests showed that the degradation products are not useful film formers. Since filming treatment has little effect on condensate corrosivity, the piping was corroded where it was not coated by the treatment chemical.
