BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

This paper reviews the trends in supply and consumption of the principal magnesium compounds in the United States in relation to domestic requirements and world resources. The data are confined to these principal magnesium compounds: Magnesium chloride, magnesium hydroxide, precipitated magnesium carbonate, and magnesium oxide (commonly referred to as magnesia). The properties and uses of magnesium compounds are shown in various chapters of' the 2nd edition of Industrial Minerals end Rocks. 3/ The third edition of this reference is in preparation. A more recent description of properties, uses and sources of magnesium compounds appears in a Bureau of Mines publication.4/ The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Refractories Institute have published comprehensive data on the properties and uses of basic refractories. Many magnesium compounds are prepared by the producers to meet specifications set by individual consumers.

INTRODUCTION The Ballard Siphon was built in 1935 and consists of two 91.4 cm (36-inch) diameter wood-stave pipes. These pipes convey sewer flowsunder the Ship Canal from northwest Seattle and the Ballard Regulator to the North Interceptor and the West Point Treatment plant. The siphons were constructed using open cut construction, are now buried in the sediment on the floor of the canal, and have severely limited ability to be dewatered, inspected, or cleaned. The existing siphon is 394.7 m (1,295 feet) long from the junction structure on the southern shoreline to the regulator structure on the north. The location of the Ballard Siphon is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The area around the Ballard Siphon has become more populated and developed since the siphon was built. Additionally, the Ballard Siphon is subject to high flows that are greater than the capacity of the pipelines. This has resulted in predict-able Combined Sewer Overflows(CSO?s) whenever a large, long duration rain event occurs. The aged pipeline of uncertain viability has become a critical piece of the sewer system infrastructure. Because of the age of the pipelines and their importance, a sonar survey was completed on both barrels of the Ballard Siphon in December of 2005. The sonar images appeared to indicate crown intrusion of the wood-stave pipes, which suggested that the pipes were in imminent danger of collapse. As a result, an Emergency Declaration was executed by King County and the Ballard Siphon Replacement Project was initiated. Staheli Trenchless Consultants was retained to perform feasibility studies to deter-mine the viability of using microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for replacement of the Ballard Siphon. For the evaluations, the preferred site location was determined to be at or near the site of the existing Ballard Siphon in order to minimize the ancillary sewer work which would accompany moving to a new site. To meet flow demands and hydraulic requirements, the replacement siphon needed a mini-mum equivalent diameter of 182.9 cm (72 inches). This could be accomplished with a number of different siphon diameters and configurations including, but not limited to, three 106.7 cm (42-inch) diameter pipelines, two 152.4 cm (60-inch) pipelines, or two 91.44 cm (36-inch) pipelines and a 121.9 cm (48-inch) pipeline.

Gold ores containing high levels of cyanide-leachable copper minerals, such as covellite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, azurite, and cuprite have traditionally been difficult to treat economically. A novel hydrometallurgical process for efficient treatment of cyanidation effluents obtained by leaching high copper gold ores (or concentrates) based on the use of Cherokee Chemical organo-sulfur reagents (OSR-A, OSR-B and OSR-C) is described. The process may be modified to selectively precipitate silver, or completely recover silver, copper and zinc, as well as regenerate significant amounts of cyanide. For example, data obtained demonstrate that 100 % of silver and zinc, and 98 % of copper were removed from the solution, while 80 % of cyanide was recovered. The treated barren solutions exhibit enhanced gold and silver leaching kinetics compared to the untreated controls.

At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."

"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information.   The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling.   The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. This paper will explore the perceived benefits and disbenefit of including the project Risk Register with bid documents; format and content that should be transferred and lessons learned using the case history of bidding and early construction phase of the Bi-County Water Tunnel in Montgomery County, MD

Increased technical and legislative analysis by all parties of interest could result in more efficientand better directed regulatory legislation in the mining industry. Efforts to forestall or frustrate legislation through massive lobbying and public relations efforts are seldom effective over time and often lead to more stringent and far reaching legislation than necessary. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is perhaps an outstanding example of such insufficiences; a future example may well be regulatory surface mine legislation. Although a lack of extensive hard data seldom enables rapid or sophisticated analysis early in the legislative process, even preliminary analysis may be sufficient. Simple statistical analyses of available data, assessment of the legislative rationale, and subjective appraisal of other non-quantifiable constraints to improved mine safety. An average of 115 underground fatalities at an exposure frequency rate of 0.67 can be reasonably expected in the immediate future, under existing levels of technology, degree of regulation, and economic conditions. If gross unrefined estimates of 6 preparation plant, 5 surface, and 30 strip mining fatalities are assumed, the total fatality industry level could be expected to approximate 156 Serious professional, economic, and technical constraints within the the industry probably preclude any major decrease of these accident levels within the near future

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is located twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario, within a metallurgical complex including a 109,000 MTPY zinc plant and a new 59,000 MTPY copper smelter and refinery. A complement of 159 persons is employed in the operation of the concentrator.Ore from the Kidd Creek Mine is crushed underground to minus 15. 0 cm, then transported twenty-seven kilometres by rail 1:0 the concentrator. After being crushed to minus 1. 6 cm, the ore is further processed by grinding and flotation.The concentrator commenced operations in November of 1966 at a designed capacity of 8,200 MTPD. Two parallel flotation and grinding circuits treated copper-zinc ore (2.28% Cu, 5.63% Zn) and a third treated silver-copper-lead-zinc ore (230 g/MT Ag; 0.57% Cu, 0.88% Pb, 7.89% Zn).By 1975, the concentrator was treating 9,100 MTPD of ore. Seven concentrates were being produced, namely, high silve1: copper, low silver copper, lead, low silver zinc, high silver zinc, pyrite and tin.Planned minesite expansion to a second underground mine required increased concentrator throughput. Expansion of the concentrator enabling a thirty-three percent increase in copper-zinc ore throughput occurred during the period 1975 through 1978. This expansion included increased load-in capacity, major redesign in the crusher house, the addition of a fourth grinding and flotation circuit, the building of a fourth dryer, and numerous expansions of services."

Electric furnaces used for smelting and those used for scrap melting exhibit different performance profiles in terms of electrical characteristics. However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

Natural aggregates, primarily stone, sand and gravel, are recovered from widespread, naturally occurring mineral deposits and processed for use primarily in the construction industry. They are mined, crushed, sorted by size, and sold loose or in concrete products to build roads, houses, buildings and other structures. Smaller quantities are used in agriculture, cement manufacture, and chemical and metallurgical processes. The growth of cities, their buildings and the highways that connect them have created demand for enormous quantities of aggregates. Consumption has now reached 9 t (10 st) per person and continues to grow faster than population. The aggregates industry is the largest mining industry in the United States in terms of production by weight, by volume and by number of active operations. About 80 percent of the concrete pavement and more than 90 percent of the asphalt pavement is composed of aggregates.

ABSTRACT: Although individually both continuum and discontinuum numerical analyses provide useful means to analyze rock slope stability problems, complex failures typically involve mechanisms related to both existing discontinuities (i.e. discontinuum) and deformation and brittle fracture of intact rock (i.e. continuum). One such example is the 1991 Randa rockslide in the southwestern Swiss Alps, where failure involved several complex mechanisms, which require the consideration of progressive failure and rock mass strength degradation. This paper presents results from a series of hybrid finite-/discrete-element models directed towards the explicit modelling of brittle fracturing in natural rock slopes, enabling the modelling of progressive failure, from initiation, through to the development of catastrophic failure, transport and deposition. RÉSUMÉ: Si les modélisations numériques de type continu ou discontinu fournissent des outils utiles pour l’analyse de problèmes de stabilité de pentes rocheuses, elles montrent de sérieuses limitations lorsque des mécanismes de rupture complexes impliquent des processus liés autant aux discontinuités préexistantes qu’au développement progressif de nouvelles fractures. Ceci se retrouve typiquement dans l’exemple de l’éboulement de 1991 à Randa dans les Alpes suisses du sud-ouest, où la rupture a impliqué plusieurs mécanismes complexes nécessitant la prise en considération de la fracturation progressive ainsi que de la dégradation de la résistance des masses rocheuses. Cet article présente des résultats provisoires d'une série de modèles hybrides orientés vers la modélisation explicite de la fracturation de pentes naturelles, permettant la modélisation de fractures progressive de leur initiation jusqu’à leur développement, leur rupture catastrophique, leur transport et leur déposition. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Obwohl numerische Kontinuum- und Diskontinuum-Berechnungen einzeln nützliche Ergebnisse zur Stabilitätsanalyse von Felshängen liefern, sind komplexe Felsrutschungen typischerweise mit Mechanismen verbunden, die sowohl durch bestehende Trennflächen (s.a. Diskontinuum-Ansatz) als auch durch die Deformation und das Versagen intakter Felsbereiche (s.a. Kontinuum-Ansatz) bedingt werden. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Sachverhalt ist der Bergsturz von Randa 1991 im südwestlichen Teil der Schweizer Alpen, bei dem die Rutschung mehrere komplexe Mechanismen umfasste, so dass “progressive failure” und Verminderung der Gebirgsfestigkeit in Betracht gezogen werden müssen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt vorläufige Ergebnisse einer Reihe von hybriden Modellrechnungen (Finite-/Diskrete-Elemente). IN a previous note1 it was pointed out that the available information suggests a distinct correlation between the occurrence of the CsCl-type ordered structures formed in equi-atomic binary alloys of transition elements and the location of the components in the periodic table. A definite increase in the bond strength between unlike atoms, as compared with that between like atoms, is indicated when, in binary alloys of iron group elements, the other component is changed from chromium to vanadium or tantalum, to titanium. Laves and Wallbaum,2 eported a CsCl-type ordered structure for the stable intermediate phase at the equi-atomic composition in the Ti-Fe system (and also in the Ti-Ru and Ti-Os systems). On the other hand, Tagaya, Nenno, and Nishiyama8 found no ordering of this kind in the body-centered-cubic solid solutions in the Cr-Fe system. It was concluded' that the occurrence of a CsC1-type ordered phase of intermediate stability may be expected in the V-Fe system. Preliminary results were described: suggesting that at least some degree of order does exist in the equi-atomic alloy VFe, annealed at 1200° C and quenched in cold water. Using CrK radiation, at least one weak superlattice line was found in the X-ray diffraction pattern which could be indexed as (100). and which disappeared, as expected, when FeK radiation was used. It was found more recently that the impurity phase (presumably VN), previously giving rise to additional X-ray diffraction lines and thus preventing definite indentification of the (111) superlattice line,' can be eliminated by preparing the alloy by arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloy specimen melted in this manner had clean surfaces and showed very littte, if any, nitride phase in the microstructure after annealing in vacuum at 1250°C and quenching. The relative intensity of the (100). superlattice line with CrK radiation was greatly increased and, in addition, a fairly strong (Ill) , superlattice line and even a detectable (210) , super- lattice line was obtained, when the powder produced by filing from the 1250°C annealed and quenched specimen was reannealed in vacuum at 625°C for 1 hr. By using a cellulose acetate film as a filter in front of the photographic film in order to absorb the soft radiation resulting from air fluorescence, the background intensity could be reduced considerably in relation to the intensity of the diffraction lines. All three superlattice lines, (100),, (111)., and (210)a, disappeared, as expected, when a radiation other than CrK, was used.1 For the powder reannealed at 625ºC, the strongest lines of the s pattern also appeared weakly, indicating that during an: nealing at 625°C a small amount of transformation took place from the body-centered-cubic to the u phase. However, since all superlattice lines to be expected in the 0 angle range used were actually very clearly present, it was evident that the high temperature body-centered-cubic phase had transformed into a CsCl-type ordered structure before much s phase could form. Reannealing filings for 1 hr at 700°C resulted in complete transformation into the u phase. After 1 hr at 650°C the transformation into IT was not quite complete, the strongest body-centered-cubic diffraction lines were still present, although fairly weak, and only the (100), super-lattice line was detectable (extremely weak). These findings not only confirm the previous conclusionsL as to the existence of a CsCl-type ordered structure in the Fe-V system, but they also indicate that this metastable ordered structure forms at about 600°C preceding the formation of the stable s phase, while at 1250°C the disordered body-centered-cubic phase is stable. The faint (loo) , super-lattice line previously observed in specimens quenched from 1200°C was probably due to the fact that the quenching of the powder in an evacuated fuse:! quartz capsule was not fast enough to prevent completely the ordering reaction on cooling. The present results conform with the suggestion that the A-B bond, in relation to the A-A and B-B bonds, increases in strength from CrFe to VFe to TiFc. It is, therefore, of interest to compare the measured values of the average atomic diameter for these three alloys with the corresponding average atomic diameters calculated from the atomic radii of the elements concerned. Just prior to the close of the century, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission issued its long-awaited decision in Berwind Natural Resources, et al v. Secretary of Labor, to usher in the new millennium. The case arose as a result of a mine explosion in Eastern Kentucky resulting in MSHA’s issuance of 225 citations, not only to the contractor, but to four affiliated entities of Berwind Corporation. While an Administrative Law Judge dismissed those citations as to three of the Berwind entities, both MSHA and the remaining Berwind entity appealed the case to the Commission. Although the Commission effectively left intact the Administrative Law Judge’s decision, it announced a new theory of liability that would apparently be applied in the future, namely the Unitary Operator Theory. This presentation will provide an in-depth look into the Berwind decision and explore the means under which MSHA might impose liability for contractor violations upon other entities in the future.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. Approach A light-scattering photometer, having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source and other significant improvements, has been designed and incorporated into a portable continuous monitor. How It Works The monitor continuously draws air into the sampling inlet through a cyclone that removes dust particles larger than respirable size. The dusty air enters the photometer vertically downward through a cylinder which is intersected by the optical system. (This cylinder appears as a circle in the drawing of the photometer.) The center of he column of dusty air intersects a beam of pulsing light from the LED, causing some of the light to be reflected, scattered, and refracted. Only the light that is scattered at an angle of about 700 from the light beam passes through a lens to the photodetector which generates an output voltage Signal proportional to the dust content in the air.
