The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10th November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly-panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

The rockfall hazard is the major contributing agency to fatal accidents in South African platinum mining operations. The majority of these accidents occur in close proximity to the working stope face. The collapse of fractured or blocky ground between individual temporary support units or the closest permanent support line to the stope face has not yet been adequately addressed. A large-scale stope support system testing facility funded by the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), has been designed and constructed to test support systems and stimulate innovative thinking by mining personnel, support manufacturers and suppliers by providing a facility where the interaction of stope support systems, a rigid stope face and a discontinuous hangingwall beam can be observed during quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Tests have been carried out on various types of stope support systems, focusing on the temporary support systems used in the immediate stope face area. The interlinking of the temporary support units with mesh or safety netting has been explored in the prevention of falls of ground between support units during gravity driven falls of ground. These tests illustrate the facility?s ability to be used to stimulate innovative thinking and provide a testing ground for the development of temporary support systems in order to reduce the risk off all of ground injury to mining personnel at the stope face.

The energy required to fragment a rock is proportional to the increase in the fracture surface area and hence is proportional to the rock?s surface area. In comminution, the slope of the linear relationship between size reduction ratio and specific energy is usually defined as grindability. Another definition of grindability based on newly created specific surface area and specific energy is introduced. The two definitions for grindability reflect the grindability properties of rocks and can be used to measure of the efficiency of mills or crushers. The feed particle size distribution influences the energy needed to comminute the rock. For a given ratio of average feed size to product size, the smaller feed size requires more energy.

Keywords: Multipass grinding, Residual stress, Retained austenite, X-ray diffraction The study investigated residual stresses behaviors and their superposition effect in D2 dies for thread-rolling applications. A nested factorial experiment was applied to test hypotheses that the residual stresses profiles change due to combination of heat treatment and multipass grinding operations, and that certain patterns can be derived due to the memory relationship between pre-existing and final residual stresses distributions. The amount of the retained austenite along with residual stresses in variation with depth was measured using x-ray diffraction technique. Statistical analyses indicate that the proposed hypotheses hold. Residual stresses distributions as well as tensile peak location were found to be significantly influenced by the treatment parameters used. Unique characteristic patterns in the residual stresses profiles were observed due to multipass grinding technique across all experimental conditions. This finding suggested a plausible memory relationship between the cutting passes, and the causes of the foregoing results are further proposed and discussed.

Retreat mining plays an important role in the coal production within Kentucky and the Appalachian Coal Basin. In Kentucky, the majority of retreat mining is performed in the Eastern coal field. However, since September 2004, Kentucky has suffered four mining fatalities during retreat mining operations, and the coal industry has focused attention on the safety concerns associated with retreat mining practices. The Kentucky Department of Natural Resources (KYDNR) engaged Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. (MM&A) to conduct a study to ensure that retreat mining is utilizing the best technology currently available and that the current available employee training programs afford maximum safety to miners. MM&A studied 34 coal mines that were conducting active retreat mining operations and represent about one third of all the mines with approved retreat mining plans in Kentucky. This paper summarizes the major research work conducted (Feddock and Ma, 2006) and recommends the practical methods for improving safety during retreat mining operations.

Has this industry, so vital to the prosecution of the war and to the maintenance of our way of life, been unaffected in its operations? No indeed - changes within the industry are great. It has been called upon to revamp its trans¬portation methods so as to move about one fourth of the total amount of crude and refined products by railroad tank car instead of by ocean-going tankers. Its fundamental internal economy, based on maximum gasoline yield from a barrel of crude, has been relegated to memories of the past. Rationing of oil products, which has been forced upon us in face of an abundant supply, is not only disagreeable medicine but is in itself completely disruptive to the marketing end of the-business.-

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. Les valeurs extrêmes de vélocités maximales ont été obtenues pour les cas où la zone de face se trouve à l’intérieur du rayon de la source. The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. Today, with the necessity of timely, on-budget and high quality completion of projects, proper use of construction equipment is essential to ensure project success. Construction equipment places a large monetary burden on the project and if not utilized efficiently, it can result in economic losses. Cranes are one of the most important and expensive operational devices on construction sites. They play a central role, and often activities that rely on crane services fall on the project?s critical path. Currently, material-handling scheduling is done by the crane operator or by an on-duty superintendent using his/hers personal judgment, making the process manual and timeconsuming. Thus, developing an optimal schedule, which considers different dynamic constraints in construction job site, may not be possible based on the current practice. This leads to longer operation times and a negative impact on project cost. This paper presents the latest results of an ongoing study, which aims to design and implement a nearreal time crane operation decision support system to be utilized directly by the crane operator or as an aid for the superintendent in scheduling optimal operation services. This system has several advantages such as maximizing the efficiency of crane operations, guaranteeing the best operation possible to reduce the crane?s travel time, reducing crews and equipment idle time, and minimizing the dependence on subjective human judgments.

The paper presents the results of several industrial and laboratory blasting, crushing and grinding tests and experiments investigating how blasting can influence the subsequent crushing and grinding operations. The paper also describes how these results can be used in order to optimize the entire comminution process from solid ore to a semifinished or marketable product. Two cases are presented, one looking at the processing of fine grained taconite ore, and the other discussing the processing of raw milling product for cement burning.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. The 115-year history of the Hall-Heroult process for production of aluminium has been characterised by a sustained technology-driven improvement in costs and productivity. In the past decade the industry has effectively transferred best practice into older technology with improvements through computer control of the process, and redesign of cell linings using computer modelling . Incremental development is now at the point where diminishing returns will apply for further technical improvement effort however, until the gap between technical limits and current best practice is addressed through major process redesign. The process remains a long way short of its technical limits in energy consumption, carbon anode consumption, cell life and product purity. Investment cost in new capacity is very high, supporting the retention of older and less efficient technology and hence limiting the application of best practice in environmental performance and occupational health exposure. The industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases yet the process has the potential to release oxygen as the primary waste. All of the above issues will be addressed in the new century, but only through commitment to the necessary long-term research and development that is required to achieve a redesign of the process.

A common theme running through recently introduced mining health and safety legislation in many parts of the world is risk assessment. Most recently, risk assessment legislation has been introduced across the mining industry of South Africa and the view that the introduction of risk assessment based legislation provides an ideal opportunity to improve on past health and safety performance is presented. Risk assessment techniques range from highly complex safety system techniques that are used in high technology process industries, to subjective techniques based on simple judgements that are finding use in many other industries. The objective of this paper is to shed some light on risk assessment, not by detailing the risk assessment process but by identifying the crucial elements that need to be considered if risk assessments are to be successful in changing health and safety performance. A case study is presented illustrating the introduction of risk assessment into the Ingwe Coal Corporation, one of South Africa?s largest mining houses, to indicate how the system was developed and how it is being used.

Commodities remain hot for the time being, but for how much longer? The bulls point to global economic growth lead by China?s insatiable demand for raw materials. To further emphasis the bullish view they point to the emergence of India for follow through demand. The bears remain convinced China?s growth is unsustainable and with higher interest rates and high oil prices, the United States economy is poised to slow. Both groups can make a convincing argument and both will be proven right in the fullness of time. Profitability and balance sheet strength for the mining industry has rarely been better. Is this a time to be bold or cautious? In this paper, the author will address the dilemma facing today?s management as they pursue growth and try to minimize risk.

WITH the large amount of metallurgical re- search work now being done and the constant effort of the engineer to effect economies of operation, I think it is a safe prediction that the next few years will see a great change in the handling of mine products. The well-managed mine, with sufficient ore reserves to warrant the necessary plants, will increasingly call upon the metallurgist and chemist for the solution of its problems. Shipping sorted ore or concentrate to the nearest smelter will not be the course followed. From ore to metal, or at least to a product directly salable to the consumer, will be the practice followed. As a consequence, mine managers will be increasingly interested in metal trade problems. By metal trade I mean the buying, selling, shipping, handling, and all the practices, forms and customs that go to make up the trade.

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on intact rocks and broken rocks that were reinforced by grouting, and the effects of grouting on the strength of broken rocks were analyzed. The results show that after grouting reinforcement, the bearing capacity of broken rocks with different lithologies increased, and their uniaxial compressive strength recovered by approximately 6%–16%. The results indicated that the stronger the rock, the smaller the strength recovery of the consolidated body formed after grouting. At the same time, using borehole camera observation and deep overburden strata separations, the fracture development characteristics of surrounding rocks of the gob-side retained entry were analyzed and divided into different regions. On this basis, a guided grouting method was proposed; that is, shallow hole grouting was first used in the plastic zone of the broken surrounding rocks to form the isolation layer, and then deep grouting holes were arranged in the elastic-plastic zone of the transition zone to guide the slurry flow to the shallow unfilled zone. Therefore, the broken surrounding rocks were reinforced into an integrated body and selfbearing capacity improved.

An early commitment by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. (formerly Texasgulf Canada) to follow a stringent environmental control programme from the initial stages of design and development of its metallurgical facilities in Timmins, Ontario, has resulted in the on-going attainment of extremely low levels of industrial waste emissions. This paper outlines the monitoring programme initiated and maintained by the company's environmental control section. Comparative results of environmental sampling for the periods before and after the copper smelter start-up are highlighted.
