To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36, and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

Experiments were conducted to study the influence of temperature, particle size and ore/coke ratio on the kinetics of reduction. The rate of reduction increased with temperature. The reduction of iron was completed at shorter time intervals at temperature above 1000ºC. Usually the reduction of chromium commenced after the reduction of iron was almost complete. Reduction was controlled by diffusion at low temperatures and by chemical reaction at higher temperatures. The nature of the reducing agent had a very significant influence on the rate of reduction. The study showed that chromium was converted into the carbide during reduction. Increasing the size of the reducing agent increased the rate of reduction initially. After a critical size, the rate of reduction decreased. However, increasing the size of the ore particle decreased the rate of reduction, initially. Beyond a critical size, it increased. An optimum particle size of the chromite ore and that of coke must be chosen, particularly in the production of agglomerates to achieve maximum degree of reduction.

The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. Simulation of the multi-entry and multi-crosscut (MEMC) ventilation systems commonly employed in U .S. underground coal mines can be very tedious, due to the large number of crosscuts with stoppings to be represented in the network models. In order to reduce the amount of work needed to build the models, a common practice is to represent a number of crosscuts with one equivalent airway. However, this introduces certain errors into the simulation results. In this paper, algorithms have been proposed to simplify the ventilation networks of common MEMC systems encountered in panel development operations. The algorithms can be used to reduce a MEMC system into one airway with an equivalent resistance and to determine the airflow distributions in the system and the leakages through the stoppings.

Step 4: Selection of explosives and initiation system Various types of explosives are manufactured in India and a wide choice is available among them that include nitroglycerin based explosives, slurries, emulsions, ANFO (ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil) and heavy ANFO. The choice is also available between cartridged and bulk loading systems. In Indian mines, much importance is unduly given to the cost of explosives alone which is not conducive to optimization of blast design parameters. The concept of energy per meter of blasthole and the way in which the total explosive energy is partitioned between shock and heave is not considered in the prevailing practices. Besides, very little efforts are made to objectively evaluate the performance of explosives for a given site condition. Tailoring explosives is limited to changing the density of the bulk explosives. Cartridged explosives are still being extensively used in large operations where bulk explosives should be the preferred choice.

In 1976, Prof. G. G. Meyerhof published a famous article in the Journal of Geotechnical Engineering titled ?Bearing Capacity and Settlement of Pile Foundations?. This article presents the authors opinions on calculating pile capacities in clays and sands, group capacities and pile settlement. A portion of the article presents correlations of shaft friction and end bearing to the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) N-value. Subsurface exploration via the Standard Penetration Test is the most widely used exploration tool in the United States, so correlations of pile capacity to N-value are significant to the practice of geotechnical engineering. Meyerhof?s SPT-N correlations are relatively simple calculations compared to other pile capacity computation methods presented in the article or found in other text books (such as the a-method, b-method, Nordlund, Vesic, Meyerhof?s semi-empirical, others) and therefore are popular amongst practicing geotechnical engineers. At the time these correlations were published by Prof. Meyerhof, utilization of dynamic testing with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) was not widespread in geotechnical engineering practice. Prof. Meyerhof?s correlations appear to be based upon conventional static pile load testing of instrumented piles. Dynamic pile measurements to estimate a pile?s static capacity provides certain advantages over conventional static load testing, namely the determination of unit shaft friction values at discrete intervals along the pile, and the unit end bearing support value. The author has compiled a database of driven, displacement piles tested with dynamic methods (ref. ASTM D4945, Test Method for High-Strain Dynamic Testing of Piles). The data was collected between 2002-2010 and is comprised of displacement piles driven into coastal plain sediments in the mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. In layered soils, dynamic testing in particularly helpful as it reveals the differences in unit shaft friction for varying soil types. One hundred ninety (190) piles are included in the database, with a corresponding 1,373 discrete shaft friction and 190 end (toe) bearing measurements. The pile type typically consisted of 12 and 14 inch square, prestressed, precast concrete piles; however, a significant number of piles were steel HP 12 or 14 inch sections. The database was sorted based upon soil type, and then correlations of shaft friction and end bearing were derived in the same or similar manner as Meyerhof?s original 1976 publication. The new correlations are compared to Meyerhof?s original values.

Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

The upswing in prices for base and precious metals, industrial minerals and coal has allowed the global mining industry to ramp up production at existing mines and begin construction of proposed projects. In addition to satisfying shareholders, the industry is also providing good paying jobs and creating needed infra-structure in places that previously did not have either. However, the industry has learned that the prospect of jobs and infrastructure is not necessarily a guarantee that communities will allow mines to be built. The industry must maintain even higher environmental and reclamation standards. And mining companies must help communities plan for life after a mine is closed and the company moves out.

Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is one of the most considerable branches of Operation Research. MCDM refers to making decisions in the presence of multiple, usually conflicting, criteria. The problems in MCDM are classified into two categories: Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) and Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM). However, very often the terms MADM and MCDM are used to mean the same class of models and mostly confused in practice. Usually, MADM is used when the model cannot state in mathematical equations and otherwise MODM is used (Hwang and Yoon, 1980). Decision-making (DM) is extremely important stage in Mining Engineering like other engineering branches. Every mining engineer makes several decisions in daily mining applications. Most of the decisions made by mining engineers are completely instinctive according to their past experiences and there is not any DM method applied in DM process. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the well-known techniques solving the decision problems. The AHP is very simple, and understandable method especially non-numerical data considered in DM process. Equipment selection is one of the prominent problems of mining engineering. Mining engineers have to make difficult decisions when equipment selection stage. As the decisions in the equipment selection have radically influenced the economic life of any mining scenario, these are considered as complex MADM problem. So, the decision maker can evaluate the subjective criteria in the problem of equipment selection. The decision maker wants to maximize more than one objective criterion for equipment selection stage. Among the number of alternatives, the most suitable equipment must be selected according to objectives and alternatives. MADM applications can help the decision maker to reach the optimal solution for the equipment selection. In the mining industry, MADM methods can be applied for the equipment selection because it is a process that includes subjective and objective criteria affecting the selection of equipment among the alternatives.

Introduction Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. "While Wearable Technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply Wearable Technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry. This paper discusses the value proposition of using Wearable Technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to Wearable Technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear™, the first Wearable Technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear™ is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on their primary task, and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. INTRODUCTION The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: time-critical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the Interruption, Reaction, and Comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction, and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, E. 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing, and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (see Figure 1). Contextual information is relevant information that is valuable for the receiver to be aware of as it can present an opportunity to improve efficiency or save cost. According to the IRC framework, contextual information is classified as low interruption, low reaction, and high comprehension. They are not as urgent as time-critical events, but provides more detailed and informative information to assist the receiver. For example, when a shovel’s worn tooth is predicted to require replacement soon, a notification to a GET technician can help him or her schedule a pre-emptive replacement of the tooth in an already planned maintenance to prevent having to reactively schedule another one when the tooth is critically worn. This helps reduce the amount of equipment downtime to maximize production (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the receiver will look at the information when he has a moment to spare to get a quick forecast, and make use of this information as needed (see Figure 2)."

To reduce the exposure of mining machine operators to respirable dust. Approach: A protective curtain of filtered air is blown down around the operator's head, from a manifold mounted on the machine canopy. How It Works: Mine air is drawn into the system through a filter which removes respirable dust. The filtered air enters a centrifugal blower which pushes it through a flexible hose to a manifold mounted on the canopy above the operator. Air leaves the manifold through a perforated plate and flows down around the operator's head. A photograph of an installed system can be seen in Figure 1. At the Vale Inco Ontario Operations, the working environment is rapidly evolving with organizational changes, new business systems and software tools. These changes are required in order to meet today?s challenging business environment. Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Some of the ?do?s? and ?don?ts? are highlighted. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at30th June, 1997, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

The energy systems of the future will be highly renewable. The flexibility that is consequently required can be provided with many options, the main ones being energy storage, transmission reinforcement, and demand side management. The role of the latter is explored for the copper industry, using the scheduling of maintenance services as an example of Solar-Paced Design - the coupling of energy demand with solar resource availability. We used a linear energy optimization model to define the minimum-cost configuration for a fully renewable energy system of a copper concentration plant under different scenarios for the scheduling of maintenance services. For the case we studied, (total) costs were 4% lower when the maintenance was scheduled in winter. We expect that exploring the potential of such Solar-Paced Design in the copper industry will allow new potentials for a more cost-effective full renewable energy supply of this critical industry. INTRODUCTION The mitigation of climate change requires a worldwide transformation of the energy system by the significant expansion of renewable energies and the electrification of various sectors and processes (Teske et al., 2015)(International Energy Agency IEA, 2018). Moreover, considering the decreasing costs of renewable energy technologies and the intensive use required to deliver the goals in the Paris Agreement, we can expect to have highly renewable energy systems in the near future. However, to rebuild and expand our energy systems, we need certain materials, including copper. Also, energy systems based on renewables are more copper-intensive than conventional ones (Kleijn, van der Voet, Kramer, van Oers, & van der Giesen, 2011). The mineral industry, in turn, needs clean energy to achieve a better environmental performance (e.g. solar energy for copper production (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017)) and to avoid negative secondary effects induced by the strong expansion of clean technologies. But there is something else the minerals industry can offer in this bi-directional relation with energy systems.

A number of state and federal agencies are calling for development of aquatic life criteria for conductivity. These aquatic life criteria or ?benchmarks? are based on observed correlations between conductivity and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, generally measured by composite metrics or indices. However, development of an aquatic life criterion for a composite variable like conductivity is made difficult by a number of factors. Based on a database from West Virginia, observed patterns of invertebrate community composition versus conductivity may instead be related to a combination of abiotic (e.g., ionic composition, habitat) and biotic (e.g., life history, colonization potential) factors. Many benthic invertebrate taxa also do not respond to increasing conductivity in a consistent relationship. Many states have determined that a composite variable, like conductivity or TDS, is not appropriate for criteria development, as many studies have shown that toxicity varies as a function of ion composition and can be mitigated by elevated hardness. We conclude that the relationships between conductivity and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition are neither strong nor reliable enough to warrant derivation of a criterion based solely on conductivity.

The ability to predict the performance of an explosive relies upon having a Reaction Rate Law and knowing its functional dependence upon various parameters of the explosive. In particular, emulsion explosives have a matrix cell size and may be sensitized with glass or plastic microballoons. The cell size dependence should. be very nearly the spherical grain burning dependence upon web that appears in the reaction rate laws for ball gun powder. The dependence of the reaction rate law upon the parameters of the sensitizing microballoons has been explored using hydrocode analysis of the pressure field produced by the collapse of a microballoon. This pressure field provides an increase in pressure in the vicinity of the microballoon which, in turn, increases the rate of reaction within this field and provides the energy release that must be achieved in order to have a steady state detonation for use as a blasting agent. Hydrocode analysis allows the determination of an approximate functional form for the reaction rate law which shows the dependence upon the size, type, and quantity of microballoons. This presentation includes the theoretical background and the determined functional form of the reaction rate law.

The paper presents results of a systematic study of synthesis of titanium oxycarbide and its chlorination. Titanium oxycarbide was produced by carbothermal reduction of titania in hydrogen, argon and helium. Formation of titanium oxycarbide started at 1200°C in all gases. The reduction was the fastest in hydrogen. Formation of titanium oxycarbide in hydrogen was close to completion in 120 min at 1300°C, 60 min at 1400°C and less than 30 min at 1500°C. Reduction in argon and helium progressed at a similar rate and reached 90-95% after 300 min at 1400-1500°C. The chlorination of titanium oxycarbide was ignited at 150-200°C. Chlorine partial pressure and gas flow rate strongly affected the chlorination rate. Chlorination of titanium oxycarbide produced with carbon to titania molar ratio 2.5 at 235-400°C was close to 100% in 30 min.
