A gas well has a certain definite capacity to deliver gas from the gas sand through the producing string of pipe. This capacity depends upon the pressures in the sand; that is, a well will deliver gas at a rate of flow which is determined by the formation or "shut-inn pressure in the sand and the back pressure at the face of the sand in the well. The three factors, rate of flow, formation or "shut-in" pressure, and the back pressure, for a given well, can be written into a fundamental relation which is strictly applicable only to that well. This relation can be used to determine the capacity of the well to deliver gas from any formation pressure against any back pressure held at the f ace of the sand in the well. Studies have been made of the deliveries of 400 gas wells operating under different conditions of pressure, Most of the wells which have been studied are in Osage County, Okla.; however, several representative studies have been made on wells in southern Louisiana, southern Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and West Virginia.

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested a an breathing and metabolic simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02 and 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60- min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include ;apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

Coal consumption has increased globally by 57% over the last ten years. Underground mining typically provides coal of the highest calorific value and accounts for the greatest proportion of production. Despite a negative environmental image and indeed impact, this industry appears likely to thrive on the global scale for many years to come. Such mining consumes large amounts of electricity with implications for carbon dioxide emission at power plants and emits substantial quantities of the powerful greenhouse gas methane. In response to this significant carbon footprint, the European Union has funded research to examine the potential for a range of improvement technologies in a project entitled Low Carbon Mine Site Energy Initiatives (LOWCARB). Coal properties related to seams and mines, together with longwall characteristics, provide the basis for research into modelling optimally efficient methane drainage with a view to assisting mining as well as maximising electricity generation at surface and hence oxidation of the methane. Possible systems for the oxidation of very low concentration methane in ventilation air, which contributes the greatest greenhouse gas impact due to the volumes emitted, have been studied and modelled. Simulation and investigation of intelligent optimisation of electricity demand patterns provide the basis for reducing the demand peaks at mines and hence the cost and ultimately the carbon footprint of a mine, while specific investigations have been undertaken into ventilation efficiency at an unusually challenging mine and simulation of mine water pumping in order to develop an innovative method to monitor pumping systems efficiency. For post-mining use, the potential of disused shafts for compressed air energy storage to improve the operation of future electricity grids with high renewable energy penetration by reducing peak generation capacity requirements has been studied. While underground coal mining will always by definition be related to a significant carbon footprint, this paper provides an overview of a set of initiatives that can make a positive environmental impact while controlling costs across a huge global industry.

The principal objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough literature review on the status of project readiness mechanisms, tools, techniques, and frameworks for mining projects. The review aimed at identifying common readiness evaluation criteria as well as potential shortcomings that prevent the establishment of a generalizable project readiness index. The literature review included a general overview of capital project performances and the importance of project readiness assessments to improve project delivery success. The study then progressed towards literature involving mining projects and how this differs from infrastructure and industrial project assessments. The paper concludes by summarizing the current state of mining project readiness assessments, the unique and differentiating factors to be considered, and suggests recommendations towards the development of generalizable readiness assessment criteria for mining projects.

It has been within only the last two or three years that enough progress has been made in preferential flotation to warrant metallurgists in recommending the installation of commercial-sized plants for the treatment of copper-zinc-iron ores. Until the new processes had been worked out successfully, the treatment of this type of ore had proved a stumbling block in the path of metallurgical progress. Separation of lead-zinc ore is comparatively simple. A lead-zinc ore low in iron may be separated and concentrated by gravity con-centration, provided it is not necessary to grind too fine. Owing to the specific gravity of chalcopyrite and sphalerite being so nearly the same, however, their separation by gravity concentration is out of the question. Complex lead-zinc-iron ores in which the several minerals are intimately associated, requiring fine grinding to free them, have been successfully treated by flotation for the past fifteen years. Galena is easily floated, and its flotation, unlike that of chal¬copyrite, is not affected by the reagents used to inhibit the flotation of sphalerite and iron sulphides. When an attempt was made to use the methods of lead-zinc se-paration on copper-zinc ores, it was found that the depressant re-agents added to inhibit the flotation of the iron and zinc minerals would, under certain conditions, depress a large part of the copper. It was also recognized that, in the grinding of copper-zinc ore, soluble salts were generated which were detrimental to flotation unless properly controlled. The main part of this paper will be a discussion of solutions in the grinding circuit in relation to the pro¬duction of soluble salts and their effect on flotation.

Heat capacity measurements of anhydrous cobalt sulfate (CoSO4), copper sulfate (CuSO4), nickel sulfate (NiSO4), and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) were conducted over the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the following entropies at 298.15° K (cal/deg mole): CoSO4, 28.1; CuSO4, 26.8; NiSO4, 24.8; and ZnSO4, 26.4. Entropies were combined with heats of formation to give free energies of formation.

In April 2005, Umicore Copper de-merged from Umicore Group and created a new independent Copper company called Cumerio. As a separate company, Cumerio is a major European copper smelter and refinery and a leading producer of copper products such as wire rod, billets, cakes and specialty rod with a total production capacity of copper products in excess of 500,000 tpy with production plants in Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria. The Pirdop Smelter is the only state-of the-art smelter in South East Europe and it makes Pirdop the natural hub for the copper industry in the region. In order to be competitive in the international market the main challenges facing Cumerio are to maintain its low cost structure and to achieve higher production volumes while reducing its impact to the environment and striving for continuous improvement of the production process. Cumerio's state-of-the-art smelting facility in Pirdop has recently increased the anode production capacity to 250,000 tpy by the installation of the third evaporative cooler on the converters section that allows operating with three-hot converters. In April 2007 a general shut-down for repair and modification on the Flash Smelting Furnace and Waste Heat Boiler is envisaged. At this time a revamp of one of the existing Sulphuric Acid Plants is planned, resulting in a further copper capacity increase to 275,000 tpy with modest Capex. In 2005 Cumerio received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water the Complex Permit under the EU IPPC criteria. Accordingly an Environmental Compliance Program was defined targeting a large reduction in the secondary emissions. The system will be commissioned in May 2007. In order to better integrate the smelter and refinery in Pirdop and to respond to the growing demand for cathodes in the region, a new state-of-the-art Electrolytic Refinery with an installed capacity of 180,000 tpy will replace the existing refinery. The new refinery is expected to be fully operational as from early 2008. This paper describes the challenges and the projects.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

A critical review of the numerous test methods that have been devised for measuring the "plastic" and "swelling" properties of bituminous coking coals and the practical evaluation of the data obtained has long been needed. The author appreciates fully, first, the arduous problem of doing justice to the merits and limitations of the many original test methods and their manifold modifications and, second, the more difficult task of interpreting the test data obtained in their practical applications to the important problems involved in the coking process. It has been the constant aim of the author to point out the broader significance of the test principles employed in the different classes of test methods and the usefulness of the test data obtained in relation to the problem of coking bituminous coals, rather than to stimulate unduly a controversial criticism of the merits and limitations of any particular class of test methods or of individual test methods devised by different workers. The task has been quite difficult because of the almost total lack of accepted test standards and specifications.

This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries (SOII) and Current Population Survey (CPS). Between 1992 and 2002, 3,378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 through 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992 to 1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002, but showed overall improvement from 1995 through 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100,000 workers. An additional 46,598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground, buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. NIOSH research aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This research is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a research and development project sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe containment for disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is currently being developed 2150 feet below the surface, in a thick salt bed which will serve as the disposal medium. Provision of a proper ventilation system at the WIPP Project is a major priority of those responsible for its design, management, and operations. As an ongoing effort towards this goal, it was decided to simulate the mine's ventilation system using Dravo's MINEVENT computer program. Specifically, the work included the development of the following simulation models: 1. Simulation of the current ventilation system 2. Simulation of the designed ventilation system for the following modes: o Mine Construction mode/shift o Waste storage mode/shift o Fire or exhaust filtration mode These computer models are useful in solving complex ventilation problems likely to be encountered in an R&D project, like WIPP. They are particularly helpful for the development of contingency plans to incorporate during emergency situations, such as fires, fan stop- pages, radiation leaks, etc. Also, they can be utilized when considering expanding certain underground areas to ensure the availability of adequate ventilation.

For the past several years, Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers have arranged tours of selected waterflooding projects for the spring meetings of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. These tours are conducted to demonstrate unique operating methods and new field equipment and to provide additional opportunities for exchanging information. Each of these tours has been supplemented by a published report describing in detail the projects visited. This report has been prepared for distribution during the 1960 spring tour of four waterflooding projects in Greenwood County, Kans. (fig. 1). Three of the projects produce oil from the Bartlesville sand, and one produces from the Cattleman sand. The Bartlesville-sand floods have been in operation from 4 to 12 years and have produced about 3,910,000 barrels of waterflood oil from the injection of approximately 64,715,000 barrels of water, a cumulative water-injected to oil-produced ratio of 17 to 1. The Cattleman- sand flood, which has been operating for 3-1/2 years, has produced about 842,000 barrels of waterflood oil from the injection of approximately 9,305,000 barrels of water, a cumulative water-injected to oil-produced ratio of 11 to 1.

The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

The development of an onboard contaminant diagnostic monitor to continuously measure contaminant level in a mining machine was advanced to a prototype stage in this contract. Several concepts were investigated and it was found that a static spool type sensor was the most reliable and accurate. Laboratory and field tests showed that an instrument based on this concept is capable of measuring contaminant levels and/or size distribution, depending on the configuration of the sensor. Moreover, this instrument can function on emulsions or homogeneous fluids. Current laboratory equipment can operate on homogeneous fluids only.
