A Brookfield viscometer fitted with a stainless steel bob was used to measure the viscosity of industrial lead blast furnace slags between 1126 and 1298°c. Slag oxidation state was characterized by first annealing the? slag samples at 750°c in sealed copper tubes in order to precipitate magnetite crystals. The magnetite concentration was then measured on an Outokumpu Saturated Magnetic Analyzer. Using an Arrhenius-type equation, a viscosity model was developed by regression. The equation below accounted for 75% of the variability in the data used to generate the regression coefficients and, on average, could predict viscosity within ± 12% of the measured value. The greatest difficulty encountered in measuring viscosity was due to the occasional presence of solids in the slag which caused, at times, erroneously high viscosity measurements. Precautions to minimize this problem are outlined in the text.

Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. This paper aims to detail the installation, testing and comparison of Pipsa versus Dorr-Oliver rotors in two different flotation sections of the MIM Copper Concentrator.CITATION:Muller, M and Law, H, 2018. This study was conducted to make a limited evaluation of experimental and standard tractor dozer blades. A field test program was conducted in the southeastern part of Kansas on strip-mined areas where the spoil banks are parallel with rest-to-crest distances between 90 and 120 ft and maximum dozing distances usually less than 50 ft. This evaluation was a part of an overall joint Pittsburg and Midway Mining Company--U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Specialized Reclamation Field Test Program primarily centered on the field t sting of experimental high-volume lateral relocation blades. The three blades evaluated were the 60-ft-wide angle (A) blade mounted on two 41B tractors. a 48-ft-wide A blade mounted on two D9H tractors, and a 13-ft-wide reclamation universal (Rec U) blade mounted on a D9H tractor. In addition to the experimental blades, three commercially available blades were tested: A 20-ft universal (U) blade mounted on two side-by-side (SxS) D9H tractors; a 20-ft U blade mounted on a 418 tractor; and a l2-ft straight (S) blade mounted on a D8H tractor. The dozer blade evaluations compared measured blade performance with soil and other site characteristics and with estimated earth-moving performance rates based on earthmoving methodology that accounts for the traction and speed of the tractor. The earthmoving methodology was also validated with data collected during this program.

Sunrise Dam Gold Mine is a large open pit mine 730 km NE of Perth, Western Australia. Contract mining commenced in the open pit in September 1996 in lake clays and saprolites with the first fresh rock mined late 1999, and the underground starting the first decline in October 2003. By May 2007, over 150 million cubic metres of material had been mined and the pit was 360 m deep with 80 m remaining before reaching the planned final depth in early 2008. A final cut-back in the northwest will commence in late 2007 with open pit mining in the Mega Pit expected to conclude in late 2010. The challenges of developing the pit can be divided into three phases:Soft materials û mining was in multiple staged pits and cut-backs in lake clays, saprolites, weathered material. The varying characteristics had a significant impact on mining methods and slope stability. Structural û mining was gradually exposing more fresh rock and the drive was to understand how major structures and lithological contacts impact on local and large-scale stability. This had a significant influence on mine design and scheduling. Slope angles û achieving the final slope angle is critical. This is done through application of high standards of final wall establishment and proactive geotechnical hazard identification and management. This includes dealing with the rapid rate of descent, interaction with underground excavations and managing rock fall risk. The paper discusses each of these phases, highlighting the geotechnical controls implemented to date, looking at their success and impact on mining.

Study and development of sensing techniques and sensors were performed to aid shuttle car drivers in detecting obstacles and in guiding the car along the face haulage route. Microwave, acoustic, and optical sensing techniques were considered as part of the feasibility study for obstacle detection. Various guidance techniques, including wire-following and rib-ranging were investigated. Active optical sensing was selected for obstacle detection to obtain the beam coverage and sharp angular cutoff characteristics required within the packaging limitations defined by the shuttle car configuration. Rib-ranging guidance was selected to achieve a completely self-contained shuttle car system which responds to the existing mine geometry without need for wires, stripes, or other path defining devices. Extensive hybrid computer simulation runs were performed to evaluate various guidance techniques during the feasibility study. Subsequent simulation runs were performed to establish parameter values for the rib-ranging guidance system. The obstacle detection and guidance system was designed, fabricated and installed on a standard shuttle car. The system satisfied all applicable permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G. An experimental permit was issued to Bendix for operation in an underground coal mine. System evaluation tests were performed first above ground at the Bendix Research Laboratories. The simulation model was validated by these runs. Final testing was performed underground in an operating mine with an experienced shuttle car driver. All sensors successfully demonstrated the predicted performance capability during underground face haulage tests. Dust did not impair system performance and lens cleaning was not required during working shifts. Further development is required to achieve the desired obstacle detection performance. Closed loop steering control with manual override is recommended for the lateral guidance system. The guidance system should be an invaluable aid to low-coal shuttle car drivers where continuous mining machines are utilized.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. GENERAL Location of Property THE Stirling zinc-lead-copper deposit is in Richmond county, Cape Breton, about a quarter of a mile southwest from Stirling P.O., and some 45 miles southwest from Sydney. The property is accessible by road for at least nine months of the year, and during the navigation period coastal boats maintain a service touching at the port of Fourchu, eleven miles from the mine. When flying conditions permit, the Cape Breton Flying Club, of Sydney, will carry passengers to or from the property, a service which has been particularly advantageous on two occasions when hospitalization was urgently required. The Company has mining rights on leases Nos. 73-74, 78-80, and 101-104, inclusive, and owns 166 acres at Stirling and one acre at Fourchu. The ore deposit is in lease No. 73. History The Stirling deposit was discovered in the 'nineties', probably about 1895. The original discovery is said to have been made in the bed of Copper creek, which traverses the ore-zone. For a number of years, indifferent development work was carried on with a view to copper production only, and it was not until1915-16 that attention was directed to the possible production of zinc. Previously, the ore had been considered too complex for metallurgical treatment. During the period 1916-24 several operators attempted to develop the property, among them being the Stirling Exploration Company, Stirling Mining & Smelting Company, New Jersey Zinc Company of New York, Hayden & Stone Company of Boston, and The Eastern Mining & Milling Company. Up to 1924, the work was limited mainly to trenching, stripping, ? diamond drilling, and shot drilling.

Ground support installation into the face of development headings has become an accepted practice at many Australian hard rock mines. Ground support is installed in the development face to reduce personnel exposure to rockfall while conducting work tasks such as marking up, installing lifter tubes, charging, and face sampling. The ground support system installed in the face is typically friction bolts and mesh. This support system can be effective at reducing rockfall occurrence, but it also increases the cost of development per metre, in terms of capital for the ground support, jumbo and operator capital allocation and the installation time slowing each drill and blast cycle. Other issues associated with meshing and bolting the development face include management of rock bolts and mesh sheets in the fired dirt of every cut, damage to services such as vent duct, geometry issues when installing ground support onto irregular development profiles and operator error. Fibrecrete installation onto the development face for support is an option considered by many mines, but it can be difficult to manage due to the removal of visual indications of misfires and slowing the mining cycle due to the wait time for fibrecrete curing. The use of Thin Spray Liner (TSL) products in underground hard rock mines has been relatively infrequent in the past, mainly due to issues with cost, health and safety, and liner strength. Kanmantoo Mine investigated the use of TSLs for the purpose of development face support, while collecting data on the costs and practicalities associated with their use. Several TSL products were trialled and a preferred TSL product was selected for use as face support. Cost savings, drill and blast cycle timing improvements and other benefits were achieved while meeting the requirement to reduce rockfall risk.

A team consisting of junior and senior mechanical engineering students at New Mexico Tech worked on the design of an explosively loaded vessel, with a maximum load of 15 grams (0.53 oz) TNT equivalent explosive. The main challenge presented was to meet the stringent sample positioning specification of 3 microns in two Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) and one degree of rotation in a third DOF. This is to accommodate precise sample placement in a tight x-ray beam, and to bring areas such as explosives/metal interfaces into magnified field-of-view photography. This presentation describes the process and design decisions to arrive at the final product presented to LANL in December 2014. Our engineering analysis techniques will be reviewed, including use of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiling & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Code Case for Impulse Loaded Pressure Vessels (ASME BPVC Code Case 2564-3). Also discussed will be integration of Hydrocode computer models with Finite Element Method analysis.

THE Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation, Limited, a Canadian company, operates alluvial gold dredges in the Klondike goldfields of Yukon Territory. Its operations are of unique interest to Canadian mining as it is the only large-scale placer mining operation of this type in Canada. Its properties lie in the valley of the Klondike river and its tributaries, Bonanza, Hunker, Bear, Last Chance, and All Gold creeks, and in the valley of Indian river and its tributaries, Dominion, Gold Run, Sulphur, Eureka, Montana, and Quartz creeks. At the end of 1938, they consisted of 1,650 placer mining claims and 9 leases or concessions. They cover a belt with an area of approximately 1,000 square miles. This vast area covers in part claims which have been previously worked by other methods such as 'drift' and 'open-cut' mining, and areas which were too low grade for such methods. The ground held by the Company is not held in freehold but in the form of mining claims and mining leases granted by the Dominion Government under the provisions of the Yukon Placer Mining Act. Full-size creek claims are 500 feet in length by 1,000 feet on either side of the base-line. Hill and bench claims are 500 feet up and clown the valley and 1,000 feet at right angles to the valley. All claims are held on the basis of an annual renewal fee of $10 for each claim plus 'representation work' of an assessed value of $200 per claim per annum. For the purpose of such representation work, claims may be 'grouped'. This means that work done by one dredge is sufficient to 'represent' a comparatively large block of claims. It is only in this way that it becomes possible to consider operations on a large scale over a term of years, for such operations would obviously be impossible on law-grade ground if representation work had to be done separately on each individual claim in each year.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

World cobalt production in 1987 was estimated to be about 26,600 metric tons (MT) of which Market Economy Country (MEC) production was estimated to be about 22,000 MT. Zaire and Zambia produce about 80 percent of the primary cobalt produced among Market Economy Countries (MEC). Production cutbacks. lowering cobalt grades and mining curtailments in Finland and Zambia in 1987, resulted in lower production than that of 1986. The trend is expected to continue through 1988. Cobalt production from Canadian ores and from Botswana is expected to increase significantly in 1988 as a result of increased nickel production. MEC production in 1988 is estimated to be 22,100 MT, only slightly higher than that of 1987. There are currently no primary cobalt mines. Virtually all cobalt is recovered as a byproduct of copper and/or nickel mining. Zaire, which produces cobalt as a byproduct of copper, is the worlds largest cobalt producer, with over 50 percent of total estimated world cobalt production and nearly 65 percent of MEC production. Zambia follows with about 14 percent and 17 percent, respectively. Zambia's cobalt production also results from copper production.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

"For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by control of contaminant ion effects and discusses selected general innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role. One group of changes to control contaminant ions is in size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is in system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy reagents). Plant examples illustrate the successes, indicating that there are several options available. The general innovations start by considering the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics by imaging. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations stress adapting geostatistics to model variation in milling and flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorous application of statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows improvements in concentrate quality from application of basic principles can be impressive.INTRODUCTIONThe more iron control (rejection) that can be accomplished in mineral processing the lower the subsequent metal extraction costs and environmental implications of iron disposal, particularly in hydrometallurgical processes. Iron rejection has been a contributing target to periodic attempts to apply mineral processing to nickel laterites and bauxites but the prime application is control of pyrite and pyrrhotite (iron sulphides) in the treatment of sulphide ores by flotation. In this paper some new concepts and innovations introduced in sulphide flotation plants over the past ten years or so (i.e., since a previous review [1]) will be outlined with examples of how they have contributed to improved “iron control”.To increase rejection of iron minerals, first the recovery mechanism should be understood. There are four principal ones, two physical in origin: 1, via locked particles (i.e., flotation of composite particles due to insufficient size reduction to liberate the minerals) and 2, through entrainment in the water reporting to the float product (an unselective process); and two originating from a response to the system chemistry: 1, true flotation (i.e., iron sulphides becoming hydrophobic) and 2, as a result of iron sulphides forming aggregates with hydrophobic particles (e.g., ”slime” coatings). There has been considerable effort to diagnose which of these dominates iron sulphide recovery; in many cases it is due to “chemistry”, in particular true flotation. The flotation effect often appears related to contamination by metal ions [1].
