MANY metals by virtue of their place of occurrence as ore, and their uses are travelers! Iron and steel, for instance, is one of the greatest of travelers in the form of ships and the romance of iron in this respect is only just beginning to be superseded by the stories which can be told of the travels of aluminum and its alloys, used in the building of airplanes. Tin is a traveler from the Straits Settlements to this country and Europe, for use in the canning industry; afterward traveling all over the civilized world as a part of the container for preserved foods. Silver is somewhat of an aristocrat, when its uses are measured against those of the baser metals. From earliest times it has been used for adornment (first perhaps o4 the person and later for the embellishment of weapons and' buildings), for the making of fine ar¬ticles used in the household, and as money. While its uses have been widened by the discoveries in chemistry, electricity and other sciences, its early uses are still much in evidence in our modern life.

As indicated by the title it is proposed: I.-To review briefly some of the more recent developments of Physical Metallurgy; and 11.-To show how Physical Metallurgy functions as the link between mining and production metallurgy on the one hand, and consumption engineering on the other hand. Io these days of specialization, papers of the kind being considered mostly gravitate to the American Society for Metals, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Institute of Metals, and the Iron and Steel Institute. In proof that there is a place for the newest and most specialized of these societies, the American Society for Metals, it may be said that in the Montreal Chapter there are 200 active members, and in the Ontario Chapter more than 200. Yet the overshadowing glamour of the mining industry proper, and the publicity it receives, result in an almost continuous dearth of students in metallurgical engineering at our universities. There are more jobs than graduates.

PRICES paid for goods and services in paper currencies are undoubtedly determined by many interrelated factors, but among them none is more specific in pushing prices toward higher and higher levels than the vast increase in debts and monetary obligations of our own and practically all major governments. There is nothing unorthodox in the situation in which the gold miners find themselves today. With wages and the prices of all materials required in the production of gold at the high levels characteristic of a period of prosperity, phony or otherwise, and with shortages of both men and machinery to contend with as well, the spread between the returns in paper dollars that must be accepted for gold in the United States and the cost of producing it is rather painfully small for most producers. The Yayoi period, from about 300 B.C. to A.O. 300, represents a time of important changes in Japanese history. During this period the advanced rice culture of the Asian continent was introduced to Japan, along with the techniques of animal husbandry, spinning, bronze casting and metal working(1) . As was the case in the Jomon period (11000 B.C. to 300 B.C.), the Yayoi period is traditionally defined by a particular type of pottery, characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and an extreme simplicity of decoration and form(2) . Pieces of this pottery were found in 1884 in a district of Tokyo, known as Yayoi-Cho, not far from Tokyo University. Within a decade the name Yayoi had come to be used for the period which also saw the first casting of metals in Japan121. During the Yayoi period, the foundation of the ancient Japanese state was laid as the individual small communities were unified and as labour specialization and social levels developed. In fact, the Yayoi may be the true ancestral culture of Japan(3) . However, the origin of the Yayoi is not definitely known. One theory indicates that the Yayoi people may have been driven from the Asian mainland (via Korea) by the dynastic wars that accompanied the unification of China under the Ch'in and Han and that these settlers rapidly displaced the Jomon. Bronze objects and the cultivation of rice may have arrived about the same time - in the third century B.C. Iron was in Japan within another century, but since it rusts badly and disintegrates, only a few small pieces are known from such an early date(4) . After about 50 B.C., the Yayoi cultures of western Japan were in fairly close and regular contact with the continent via Korea(5)

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

THIS paper presents in an abbreviated form the chief points of interest in an investigation of the tarnish-resistant qualities of silver alloys, an investigation which has been carried out as a joint research by the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Standards and will later be reported in detail in an official publication from these bureaus. In 1923 a Commission of Gold and Silver Inquiry was created by a Resolution of the U. S. Senate to study the causes of the depressed condition of the gold and silver industry. In cooperation with this commission the Bureau of Mines made a preliminary survey to determine in what ways, if any, it might be possible to increase the uses of silver. One of the possibilities indicated by this survey was the development of silver alloys which should be non-tarnishing, or at least less-tarnishing, than the usual sterling silver (copper-silver). The preparation of a rather wide variety of silver alloys and the determination of their behavior under accelerated tarnish tests in the laboratory was therefore undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and Bureau of Standards as a joint investigation.

A survey and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on. mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Souther-land (1891), but Fess'enden4',~ made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: £ = 78.TOw(i)* where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski, working from the same standpoint but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: where B is a constant of value about 8 . 107, p is density and mis atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being ml p. Portevind4 immediately pointcd out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: F- KT" where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson. Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff.50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium, 18

A review of development and a reevaluation of uses of the hydraulic air compressor are suggested by the constant changes in technology, which frequently make an old art valuable in solving current problems. Contacts with research workers in various branches of engineering indicate that this older method of producing compressed air may not be familiar to some or that its salient features might be useful in solving problems involving uses of compressed air. Briefly, a hydraulic air compressor may be described as an inverted siphon, consisting of an intake head where water and air are mingled, followed by a gravity-fall tube in which air is intimately mixed with the water and is compressed as the water pressure increases during the fall down the tube, then a separating, or stilling, chamber in which air bubbles rise to the surface of the water and collect in the upper portion of the chamber at a pressure equal to the weterhead maintained by the height of water in the discharge leg of the circuit. The water, which now contains only the fraction of air that has gone into solution, passes out of the separating chamber and rises up the discharge leg to the surface, which is, of course, at some suitable distance below the level of the intake. Present-day applications include (1) utilizing low hydraulic heads, which otherwise have little commercial values; (2) utilizing low hydraulic heads in reclamation work to supply compressed air, or in some instances to produce a small suction, for air-lift pumping (or for operation of air motors), with minimum attendance and without need for electric power; (3) utilizing medium heads, as at dam and lock installations, to produce compressed air for pneumatic operation of airlifts, gates, valves, and rubber gate seals; (4) utilizing underground waters, as in mines, to produce compressed air for general mine use; (5) using this method of isothermal compression of air in combination with standard compressors wherever hydraulic head is available, thereby securing the advantages of low-temperature intake to the mechanical compressors and reduction of moisture content below that of atmospheric air; (6) development of large air supply at pressures up to 150 p.s.i.g., which, after performing work in reciprocating or centrifugal expansion cylinders, is available at temperatures approximating -50° F. Possibilities in freezing and reheating should be mentioned which may prove economical for obtaining uniformly dry air for process work, wind-tunnel tests, or large air-conditioning installations, such as ventilation of underwater traffic tunnels, and may be economic for supply of supercharged air to gas-turbine plants.

The production of iron and steel and non-ferrous metals by pyrometallurgical processes will remain a critical element in meeting the demand for materials in both developed and developing nations. Given the important need to reduce and minimise greenhouse gas emissions the technological focus of future pyrometallurgical R&D by universities and industry alike must concentrate on sustainability issues such as improved energy efficiency, recycling and waste minimization. Continued efforts are also needed on process optimization and new process development with a view to reducing capital and operating costs of the new large “mega” plants. Using the academic and industrial backgrounds of the authors, the present paper reviews the current status of R&D in pyrometallurgy in university departments with a particular emphasis on sustainability issues. The role of industry and government laboratories is also reviewed although primarily for developed countries. The paper also includes comments and suggestions on the future requirements for education and R&D in pyrometallurgy in developed countries to maximise sustainability. It is also suggested that future R&D in pyrometallurgy will be even more concentrated in developing countries – most notably China.

Computer-assisted control of a mining machine can place the operator in a safe, remote location. A guidance system aids remote positioning of a mining machine by determining its position and heading. The mechanical position and heading system (MPHS) is one of several guidance systems being developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The MPHS uses linear position transducers (LPT's) to provide navigation information during face maneuvers. This report presents an overview of the MPHS theory and implementation, including recent design modifications made for more successful underground testing. This report also presents the experimental setup and procedure for the underground test. The test showed that the MPHS provides reliable and accurate results and can, therefore, provide useful guidance information for face navigation.

Studies were made on the projectile impact sensitivity of explosives by subjecting explosive samples to the impact of metal projectiles fired from a 0.50- caliber gun . The projectiles , in the form of right cylinders , made plane surface to plane surface contact with the explosives . Pressures in the explosive were investigated with an expendable pressure transducer in some instances . The physical model of the projectile - explosive interaction describes , in principle , the duration of the peak shock pressure in terms of the projectile and explosive geometry and the steady- state penetration of the explosive . Of the explosives studied , liquid hydrogen- solid oxygen and liquid oxygen - solid or liquid hydrocarbon fuel were the most shock sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of about 1.0 kb or 987 atmospheres pressure ) ; cast TNT was the least sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of more than 110 kb pressure ) . Measurements of pressure in the explosive showed some moderate space resolution by the transducer and gave pressure distributions in agreement with expectations from the model of the shock processes . The appearance of the recovered projectiles and the calculated initiation shock pressures suggest that the solid explosives were initiated directly to high- order detonation , whereas the liquid explosives were probably initiated to low- order detonation-- with a subsequent , later transition to high- order detonation .

A LARGE proportion of the coke used is made in the by-product oven from the high-volatile coals mined in the adjacent district. At the beginning it was feared good by-product blast-furnace coke could not be made with our coals. By experimenting with various mixtures of coals, coking time, oven design, and coking temperatures, much has already been accomplished. The results show that a hard, dense coke, not easily broken by handling, can be produced. In its present state it is not all that could be desired, but it is being constantly improved. Such coke has been used alone as the fuel on several of the blast furnaces producing the highest daily production in the Pittsburgh district. Many of the coals in the Pittsburgh district when coked in the by-product oven yield a gas which contains a high percentage of sulfur, which is objection- able for many metallurgical operations. As this fuel is gradually replacing the ideal fuel, natural gas, which is becoming less plentiful, studies are being made of the best methods for purification. Some metallurgists believe sulfur to be a very injurious element in steel. Recent investigations by Government bureaus, scientific bodies and private firms, seem to indicate that a reasonable amount of sulfur may exist in steel without detriment. Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. The K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6.5 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,018 barrels of 430 A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive. Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949. The K.M.A.? structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two "distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate-water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume of 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oil indicate that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 p.s.i., at which pressure 1 barrel of stock-tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of ea~ in solution.

"The lightness and relatively high strength per unit weight of certain magnesium alloys have interested designing engineers for many years. Ever since the noted investigator Bunsen3/ first produced the element by electrolysis of the fused chloride in 1852, utilization of this light metal has been considered. Magnesium is widely distributed over the earth's surface in high-grade as well as low-grade deposits; it occupies eighth place in the list of elements arranged in order of their decreasing abundance, as there is 2.24 percent magnesium in the earth's lithosphere. Even though the element is distributed widely in the form of relatively insoluble: minerals and also as soluble salts in sea water and spring water, as well as being an indispensable constituent of plants and animals, the technology of magnesium was slow development. This slowness of development was first caused by confusion or the part of the early investigators who thought that magnesia, magnesite, magnetite, and the pyrolusite-type manganese ores were compounds of the same metal. At one time the metal that we now know as manganese was called magnesium, and magnesium was called either magnium or talcium. In addition to this coon, the chemical activity of the metal, especially at high temperatures, created problems that are still difficult to solve.With the advance of science in all branches, .methods for -he production of magnesium were developed. The methods first used for producing the element were: (1) reduction of magnesium salts with alkali metals,4/ (2) electrolysis of aqueous solutions of magnesium salts, and (3) electrolysis of fused magnesiun salts.The first attempts to produce magnesium by the carbothermal reduction of magnesia were failures as sufficient thermodynamic knowledge concerning the reversibility of the reaction between magnesia and carbon was not at hand. As the igneous electrolytic Method for making the element was more easily controlled than the others and. yielded more metal per unit of energy, considerable work was expended on the improvement of this process. The work in this field paralled that on the electroreduction of aluminum and the alkali metals. For several years the entire magnesium industry was dependent on this igneous electrolysis process for its supply of the metal, but as demand for the metal increased and more scientific knowledge was available, other processes were developed. Today magnesium is produced by the electrolysis of molton magnesium chloride electrolytes, the carbothermal reduction of magnesia, in arc furnaces followed by shock cooling of the furnace gases by a coin inert atmosphere, and the silicothermal reduction of calcined dolomite in stainless steel retorts."

"Many problems in rock mechanics are limited by our imperfect knowledge of the material properties and failure mechanics of rock masses. Mining problems are somewhat unique, however, in that plenty of real world experience is generally available and can be turned into valuable experimental data. Every pillar that is developed, or stope that is mined, represents a full-scale test of a rock mechanics design. By harvesting these data, and then using the appropriate statistical techniques to interpret them, mining engineers have developed powerful design techniques that are widely used around the world. Successful empirical methods are readily accepted because they are simple, transparent, practical, and firmly tethered to reality.The author has been intimately associated with empirical design for his entire career. But where his past papers have described the application of individual techniques to specific problems, the focus of this paper is the process used to develop a successful empirical method. A six-stage process is described:1. Identification of the problem, and of the end users of the final product2. Development of a conceptual rock mechanics model, and identification of the key parameters in that model3. Identification of measures for each of the key parameters, and the development of new measures (such as rating scales) where necessary4. Data sources and data collection5. Statistical analysis6. Packaging of the final productEach of these stages has its own potential rewards and pitfalls, which will be illustrated by incidents from the author’s own experience. The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a new and deeper appreciation for empirical techniques, as well as some guidelines and opportunities for future developers."

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent in improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver- bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores that because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

The term "Ichtnyol" is a name applied loosely to certain preparations used in pharmacy. These preparations do not occur as such in nature but are manufactured by various chemical processes. Ichthyol is the name trademarked for a product manyfactured by the Irhthyel-Gescllschaft (Cordes Hermanni & Co.) of Hamburg, Germany, and marketed in thin, country by Merck & Co., Inc., (5, 86, 87)3/. Although used in the literature rather loosely, the correctly applied word refers to the product obtained by sulphonating and then neutralizing with ammonia a distillate from the oil retorted from a certain high-sulphur bituminous shale found near the village of Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol. Due to the fact that fossils of fish and marine animals occur in the limestone associated with the bituminous shale, these deposits have long been known as, the "lchthyolite schistc of Seefeld" ( 55) . The Greek word "ichthys"" for fish and the Latin word "oleum" for oil are the words from which the term is derived. The crude, tarry shale oil, whose distillate is the raw material for the sulphonation process, has been referred to since the Middle Ages as "Dürsten" or "Tirschen" oil, and the term "ichthyel oil" has been used occasionally in the literature to designate the retorted crude oil (92, 93, 106, 117). The first application of the name "Ichthyol" to a particular product is credited to Schröter (35, 129). Various names for products manufactured by sulphonating bituminous distillates have been coined, and in some of these names the root from the word ichthys has been retained. Some of these names can be found in New and Nonofficial Remedies under the heading, Sulphoichthyolate Preparation, and Substitutes (5).
