Waste disposal schemes using spent shale in embankments require a thorough knowledge of its geotechnical engineering properties for environ-mentally safe disposal. In this context, the objective of this laboratory investigation was to determine the physical properties, geotechnical properties, and composition of spent oil shale retorted by the PARAHO and TOSCO processes. Physical properties consisted of mechanical analyses, Atterberg limits, and specific gravity determinations. Geotechnical engineering properties were determined by compaction, maximum-minimum density, unconfined compression, triaxial compression, permeability, direct shear, Ko, cyclic tri-axial, resonant column, and Los Angeles Abrasion tests. Petrographic, chemical, and scanning electron microscopy analyses were used to determine compositional features. Unprocessed shale is hard and durable and more properly described as a carbonate rock instead of shale. PARAHO is classified as a GP, while TOSCO classifies as an SM. PARAHO requires no moisture for compaction to maximum densities; however, TOSCO does. Retorting causes a loss in durability but creates self-cementing characteristics, which for PARAHO a 3-to 8-fold strength increase was observed, while for TOSCO the increase was 1.5 to 3 folds. The shear strength, compressibility, and dynamic properties of compacted PARAHO are comparable to those for sandy gravels. Compacted PARAHO is semipervious, while compacted TOSCO can be semipervious to impermeable.

This paper describes open-pit mining methods and practices at Copper Cities Division of Miami Copper Co, in Gila County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Burea of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, provided technological information on the development and conservation of our mineral resources and assisted operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits. This circular contains a brief history of the district and describes the Copper Cities deposit, with particular emphasis on a detailed description of those characteristics--physical, economic, or engineering--that affect the choice of mining method. Prospecting and exploration, sampling and estimation of tonnage and values, development, and mining (including breaking ground, loading, hauling, ore control, and auxiliary operations related to mining) are described, Percentage of extraction, production rate, safety, first aid, Eire prevention, mine organization, and processing plant are discussed briefly, The final section gives such costs, on a percentage basis, as are available for publication. Where relevant, some information on the Castle Dome mine is included.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. [Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Core specimen first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are on analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, "connate" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and availability of oil and gas within reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.]

THIS paper will present a review of the mining operations of one of Canada's most lately established gold mining districts (1). The history of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas is interesting in view of the fact that, although they have long been the scene of a certain amount of mining activity, they remained little more than an uninhabited wilderness until 1933, since which time ten producing gold mines and mills have been established in permanent operation, eight of these having entered production since the beginning of 1937. As complete a background as possible will be given concerning the major influences having a bearing upon living and economic conditions in the mining communities. The object, here, is to show the diversity of problems which demand the attention of the operator starting up and operating a new mine in present times, and to indicate the ways in which these problems are successfully met in this district. A description of the power facilities and plant equipment will be followed by a summary of the problems encountered and methods applied in exploration and development. This is to aid in forming a background showing the circumstances which influence the mining methods and costs of the various operations. The paper will conclude with a description of the mining methods used and the costs of the operations, including summarized analyses of the stoping methods and mining conditions. The various phases of operation will be dealt with separately, in so far as this is possible, in order to present clearly the salient features. It is necessary, however, that the reader bear completely and constantly in mind the fact that in actual operations these phases arc, to a large extent, intimately related and greatly affect each other, as well as being, in turn, affected by other circumstances beyond the control of the operator. A few of these circumstances are: capital available during the development period and early stages of productive operation; strength of rock comprising the ore and its boundary walls; grade, size, shape, and location of ore-bodies; and many other natural items which must be carefully weighed in relation to the details of operation.

"Although researchers have realized varying degrees of success in numerics modeling, computer blast simulations and small scale in-situ testing, most will agree that the greatest uncertainty in total success stems from the uncontrollable field variables. Given the diverse nature of field conditiorencountered, no reliable and proven method of evaluating fragmentation quantitatively, and the lack of adequate field controls found in many operations, it is unlikely that a universal plug-in model will be developed for all blasting in the imediate future. This does not imply that all research devoted to modeling should cease, for it is precisely here where more research efforts are desperately needed."

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

At its College Park Metallurgy Research Center in Maryland, the Bureau of Mines has installed and is operating a 5-ton-per-hour pilot plant for continuous mechanical separation of values contained in raw urban refuse. The entire sys tern was assembled using commercially available equipment. The process relies on multistage processing including shredding, air classification, screening, gravity concentration, and electrostatic separation. Compactor trucks deliver raw refuse collected along typical routes in metropolitan Washington, D.C., to the pilot plant. The loads are separated into concentrates of (1) light-gage iron, (2) massive metals, (3) glass, (4) putrescibles and waste combustibles, (5) paper, and (6) plastics. While some refinements remain to be made in the processing system flow-sheet, the data obtained to date have been highly encouraging, indicating favorable economics for commercial-size plants.

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

"A unique deposit of barite exists near Brookfield, Nova Scotia. The crystals are extremely fine and the whole deposit virtually free of heavy metals. The deposit size was not large enough for conventional uses, such as the production of barium carbonate and drilling mud. In an effort to obtain maximum utilization, a program was begun to determine if U.S.P.-grade pharmaceutical barium sulphate for X-ray diagnosis could be produced. Early work was sufficiently encouraging to institute a development program under the federal Program for Advancement of Industrial Technology. This has been very successfully completed. Canadian and U.S. process patents have been issued, clinical trials have been successful, a production plant has been designed and the plant’s production sold. The processing plant will include magnetic separation for the removal of iron minerals, fine grinding by paddle milling to minus one micron and acid leaching. The process is unique in that at no time is the barium taken into solution.Information is given on the deposit, process, markets, use, plant capital and operating costs, and projected profits. The initial production plant will have an annual capacity of 2,000 tons per year of end product. Capital cost is $850,000 and annual turnover more than $1.5 million. As this capacity only represents approximately 15% of the North American market, rapid plant expansion is foreseen."

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. A plan is proposed and recommended for the quantification and implementation of evaluation standards for gas detection device certification.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1990 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. Among the most significant to be produced in Africa were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, coal, cobalt, copper, diamond, fluorspar, gold, lithium minerals, manganese, phosphate, platinum-group metals, the titanium minerals-ilmenite and rutile, vanadium, vermiculite, uranium, and zircon. Several of these, chromite, cobalt, diamond, and manganese, were not produced in the United States. Despite the underdevelopment of much of Africa, mineral raw materials playa very important part in the national economies of many of its countries. In many cases, the production of minerals is the dominant economic activity in the country, often having the largest and most sophisticated work force. In several countries, one or two mineral commodities are dominant in a weakly diversified economy. Among these are petroleum and diamonds in Angola, petroleum in the Congo, gold in Ghana, bauxite in Guinea, uranium in Niger, phosphate in Senegal and Togo, and copper and cobalt in Zaire and Zambia.

The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

The MODSIM mineral processing plant simultor is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open- and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.
