The hydration kinetics of MgO, namely magnesia or magnesium oxide, obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O has been studied. Nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) was prepared by the reaction of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 in a mixed-suspension mixed-product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer at 40 °C. Three magnesium oxide samples were obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O in muffle furnace at 900, 1100 and 1300 °C for 3 h, respectively. The hydration experiments of MgO samples were investigated at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 24 h in a stirred batch reactor. The hydration results indicate that the rate and extent of hydration of magnesia decreased remarkably with hydration temperature and increased with decreasing calcination temperature at a constant hydration temperature. The whole hydration reaction of magnesia was supposed to experience the promotive period and declining period. An empirical kinetic model ( k t p -?ln(1-??) ??) and a modification of the classical shrinking core model for diffusion control ( k t b d -?-?3 2 ????1 [1 (1 ??) ] ) have been applied to fit the experimental data of hydration in two stages, respectively. The values of kinetic parameters ( p k and d k ) were obtained by regression analysis and the activation energy of the sample at 900 °C was estimated to be 34.23 kJ/mol. The comparison between MgO from calcination of synthetic MgCO3·3H2O and a commercial MgO used in silicon steel production was carried out, indicating that special silicon steel grade MgO can be obtained by calcination of MgCO3·3H2O below 900 °C.

Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. Engineering and economic evaluations were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 Frasch sulfur, 1 native sulfur, and 21 metal sulfide operations in 11 market economy countries. The evaluation included discounted-cash-flow rate-of-return economic analyses at 15 pct to determine the average total cost of production of these two commodities and the potential availability of elemental sulfur (8) and pyrite concentrate. The Bureau evaluated the potential availability of elemental sulfur and pyrite concentrate. Approximately 279 million metric tons (Mmt) of pyrite concentrate at 46 pct 8 is potentially recoverable from 422 Mmt of in situ metal sulfide ore. Nearly 89 pct of the total pyrite concentrate is available at an average total cost of production below the January 1984 pyrite concentrate market price ($43/mt). About 185 Mmt 8 is potentially recoverable from 253 Mmt of in situ elemental sulfur. About 99 pct of this sulfur is available at an average total cost of production below its January 1984 market price ($131/mt).

Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

Introduction Probably the newest thing in mining safety is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industry, as represented by both management and labour, and the general public of many nations in which mining is conducted, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments in the technical press;' in labour periodicals, in popular Journals and periodicals, and in the daily press (5, 11). Despite what may be said to the contrary, mining in the United States is becoming safer, and this trend has been evident for several years (see Figures 1 to 4). Because the author's experience has been mostly in the United States this paper will discuss briefly some recent observations in the United States that have a bearing on mining safety. Because coal mining is of primary interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, the paper treats mostly of coal-mining safety; however, many hazards in mining .are common to all mines, regardless of the minerals mined.

O avanço tecnológico tem gerado demanda crescente por materiais que possam ser utilizados em alta temperatura e ambientes oxidantes, o que inclui ligas intermetálicas MR–Si–B (MR = metal refratário) com estruturas multifásicas. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a microdureza de ligas do sistema Hf–Si–B na seção isotérmica a 1600ºC, na região rica em Hf. Ligas Hf–Si–B foram fundidas com lâminas de Hf (min. 99,8%), Si (min. 99,998%) e B (min. 99,5%), em forno a arco e tratadas termicamente a 1600 ºC em atmosfera de argônio. As relações de fases nessas ligas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X e por contraste, em imagens obtidas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura no modo elétrons retroespalhados. As ligas tiveram sua dureza medida pelo método Vickers (microdureza) com cargas de 0,05 kgf e 0,2 kgf e tempo de aplicação de 20 s. Os resultados, obtidos da média aritmética das medições realizadas nas regiões heterogêneas de cada liga, mostraram uma dureza média de 11,08 GPa, com pequeno coeficiente de variação de 3,8%. Os boretos HfB2 (19,34 GPa) e HfB (11,76 GPa) apresentaram dureza mais elevada que os silicetos Hf2Si (8,57 GPa), Hf5Si3 (9,63 GPa), Hf3Si2 (11,66 GPa), Hf5Si4 (10,00 GPa), HfSi (10,02 GPa) e HfSi2 (8,61 GPa).

IN the fall of 1953, The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd. put into operation a completely new and modern plant for sintering the rather complex assortment of materials which comprise the feed to the Lead Smelter at Trail, British Columbia. This Lead Smelter is one section of an integrated metallurgical plant producing lead, zinc, silver, gold, cadmium and other metals. Since most of the incoming lead concentrate contains appreci- able zinc values, and most of the zinc concentrate similarly contains appreciable lead values, the cross-routing of residues or tails from the respective lead and zinc plants offers obvious advantages in recovery of metals, and has been practiced for many years. A disparity has existed, however, between the output of zinc plant residue and the capacity of the Lead Smelter to treat it, with the result that over the years a stock-pile of residue had been accumulating, and by the end of World War II had reached the formidable total of half a million tons. To treat this stock-pile, in addition to all current zinc plant residues and, of course, the regular quota of lead concentrates, became a prime objective of the Lead Smelter following World War 11. [For almost 2 decades the Bureau of Mines has been Interested in converting solid fuels to liquid fuels. Small-scale laboratory investigations were carried on for a number of years.4/ This work wad expanded substantially under authority of Public Law 290, approved by the 78th Congress on May 5, 1945. As part of the. broadened program, coal-hydrogenation demonstration plant was designed and erected at Louisiana, Mo., where: hydrogen-manufacturing and compression equipment, shoes, electric power, and other utilities and facilities were available from a discontinued wartime ammonia works . The plant uses the direct -hydrogenation or Bergius process, but the process differs from prewar European practices in many respects. Many noteworthy improvements h eve bean made, particularly by substituting automatic instruments for manual control of process variable's, in line with modern American processing practices. The over-all objective of the demonstration plant is to bridge the gap between laboratory end commercial-scale operation by furnishing cost and engineering data to develop a synthetic liquid-fuels industry when it proves technically and economically justified. Fitting into the over-all program, specific objectives o early runs were to (1) train personnel who had no experience with this type of operation, (2) break in the installed equipment, (3) obtain successfully integrated operation of the entire plant, and (4) work towards obtaining data on the hydrogenation of coal-tar oil and a typical low-ash coal. In beginning fan integrated operation, it is common practice to operate and obtain reaonably smooth performance of each unit before the over-all operation is undertaken. In the process of pillar extraction, pillars are seldom if ever extracted completely. The pillar remnants, or snooks, play an important role in the extraction process. At the working face, they need to be stable to provide a measure of support in the immediate area. Further back, they have to fail in a controlled manner to prevent undue load build-up on the pillars that have not yet been extracted. The stability condition at the working area is the result of interaction between the stability of the pillar and that of the roof rock. It is shown that the primary mode of roof layer failure is by bending induced tension. Direct tension can be excluded in most practical conditions, and only in exceptional cases will the first failure be in shear mode. Panel spans required to cause the first goaf to be formed, predicted using analytical considerations, are of the same order as has been observed in practice. Once the first goaf has formed, the horizontal stress is reduced and failure will occur at more frequent intervals. It is shown that bending induced tension is the most likely mode of failure in an unjointed roof layer. In roof layers with a high frequency of weak or uncemented jointing, failure can be expected to occur at spans equal to the joint spacing. In this context, failure will occur at the smallest of the spans required to induce tensile roof failure and the joint spacing. A fundamental procedure to evaluate the likely roof layer failure in a stacked beam system is developed. This can to be used to estimate the loading condition on snooks. It is shown that snooks assist in stabilizing the immediate roof beam. The sizes and positions of the snooks relative to the position of the next pillar to be stooped, control the magnitude of the contribution to stability. The further the snook is from the next pillar, and the larger it is, the greater the contribution to the stability of the immediate roof. Under the condition of loading by the immediate, continuous roof beam, the position and size of a single snook controls the load acting on it. The closer it is to the nearest solid, provided that the roof overhang extends beyond the snook, the greater the load on it. However, once the immediate roof beam fails, the loading conditions change. The snook is then loaded by the tributary area load. A procedure is developed to assess the condition of snooks for different situations. Using the fundamental considerations developed in this paper, snooks can be designed to be stable during the active mining phase in their immediate vicinity, but to fail once the next line of pillars has been extracted.

Hatch’s Mine to Process Optimization projects integrate mining and processing strategies, minimizing operating costs and maximizing overall profit. The methodology involves ore characterization, blast audits, plant surveys, analysis of historical data, and integrated modelling and simulation of mining and processing. Blast designs are tailored according to ore type and the downstream process is optimized for the changed feed. This approach has increased throughput and minimized costs for many operations worldwide. The implementation of this methodology at an iron ore operation that faced challenges with increasing mining strip ratio and ore body mineralogy changes is presented in this paper. The larger stripping ratio increased mining costs and constrained the run-of-mine (ROM) delivery to the process plant. Process performance was affected as the ore mineralogy shifted from predominantly hematite to include greater proportions of magnetite. The project objective was to minimize overall cost per ton mined and processed and maximize profit. Tailoring the blast designs according to ore type and process optimization increased the throughput of all process lines. This provided the potential to shut down one of the five processing line, aligning the mine and plant capacity and significantly reducing the processing costs.

As part of a $3.5 billion program to improve the antiquated waste water system in the city of Atlanta, the Nancy Creek Tunnel is being constructed across the northwest portion of the city. This tunnel is over eight miles long and is being constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for the majority of the tunnel and conventional drilling and blasting for three shafts, starter and tail tunnels and four connecting tunnels, totaling 2400 feet in length. An extensive public relations program was developed for this project. A group effort by the owner, engineer and contractor produced a public relations program that both informed and educated the public of the anticipated perceptions and effects of the blasting and TBM activities.

The seepage forces generated around pressurized water tunnels in rock are investigated using the analysis tools of geomechanics. The theoretical background of the two-phase material behavior is explained and the equations of motion and continuity are presented. Applications on two case studies typically occurring in practice deal with the required minimum rock cover for a pressurized tunnel and the separation between two tunnels carrying different heads. The rock mass behavior as described by the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown material models is investigated by numerical analyses and the results are compared. The effect of key material parameters on the safety factors and the associated modes of failure is discussed.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

Probably no year in the history of the United States showed greater progress in the mineral industries than 1916. Although this progress was undoubtedly stimulated by the war in Europe, which caused extremely high prices for some of the metals, yet the fact remains that mining is being regarded more as a business and less as a speculation, and the benefits of business methods are becoming evident. Practices that were almost universal a few years ago have been largely abolished, the mining public has been brought to recognize the folly of wasteful and dangerous methods, and there is a gratifying unanimity of opinion in regard to the conservation of life and health, as well as of our mineral resources. The people of the United States realize more fully than ever before the extent and value of the country's mineral resources and the possibilities that await intelligent and well-directed efforts at utilization. In the past, economic reasons caused deposits of valuable metals and industrial materials to lie idle; commercial reasons, many of them not truly economic, led to the waste of valuable constituents in many ores; the recovery of minerals from the ground was too often incomplete and accompanied by uncalculated loss; and the treatment of ores in mills and smelters saved altogether too Iowa proportion of the metals sought. Now better methods are being tried on every hand, and the unparalleled record of the year is largely due to the success of these efforts. According to the preliminary estimates of the United States Geological Survey the output of metals and minerals in this country in the calendar year 1916 had a total gross value of slightly more than $3,000,000,000. INTRODUCTIONConsideration of the effects of earthquakes and seismic loadings is an increasingly important aspect of modern foundation design, and most contemporary standards have a mandatory requirement for such consideration. For example, the Australian Piling Code, AS 2159-2009, states that “a pile shall be designed for adequate strength, stiffness and ductility under load combinations including earthquake design actions”. However, the methods by which such considerations can be undertaken are generally not set out in the standards, and many approaches have been utilized, ranging from very simplistic methods to extremely complex computer analyses. Accordingly, there appears to be scope for an approach that is soundly based but which is neither too simplistic nor too complex.Poulos (1989) has suggested that there are three categories of analysis and design, as follows:1. Category 1: empirical methods.2. Category 2: simplified but soundly-based methods.3. Category 3: more comprehensive methods that are soundly-based, and site-specific.The objective of this paper is to set out a systematic but simplified approach which falls into Category 2 above, and by which the foundation designer can undertake the relevant analyses to satisfy the foundation design requirements for seismic regions. ABSTRACT It is critical that historical processes and concomitant exposures to specific nickel substances be understood because some diseases linked to inhalation of certain nickel-containing substances have a long latency between first exposure and disease onset, and because nickel substances vary significantly in their toxicological properties. A discussion of the smelting history and related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Copper Cliff, Ontario, smelter is integral to the understanding of these processes. The post-1950 processing history, equipment, propensity for aerosol formation, operational procedures, and ventilation controls used by Vale Canada in roasting, smelting, converting, and copper-nickel separation is discussed.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5).
