The surface manifestation of underground mining usually entails five distinct types of surface movements, which can affect or damage surface structures, facilities and renewable resources. These movements developing at the surface can be described by (Bell, 1975; Bhattacharya and Singh, 1984): - vertical displacement, i.e. subsidence, - horizontal displacements, - slope or tilt, i.e. the derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, - curvature, i.e. the second derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, and, - horizontal strain, i.e. the derivative of the horizontal displacement with respect to the horizontal distance.

Since the establishment of the standard dust concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has been made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines. Particular areas of success have been control of dust generation by better coal-cutting strategy, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomsky, 1983).

A blast was engineered close to a tunnel in a deep-level mine with the purpose of studying the wave interaction with the tunnel. Numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation was used in both the forward planning and the back-analysis of this experiment. This paper presents the forward analysis. A likely model for a propagating blast was investigated and developed. This model predicts the influence of the velocity of detonation of the blast and the rise-time of the blast on the radiation pattern, and hence on the expected positions of maximum velocity at the tunnel surface. An attempt was made to quantify the parameters of the blast model, using waveform data from two other blast experiments. The blast model caused particle velocities which were an order of magnitude lower than these measured velocities. Large values for blast pressure were required to match the amplitudes of the recorded velocities. An alternative ?effective? source with a similar mechanism but increased diameter was proposed to account for the higher velocities. It was established that distant velocities scale with the square of the borehole diameter. A calibration blast at the experimental site was also modelled. Agreement in the waveforms was not sufficient for conclusive statements to be made about the validity of the source model. However, the modelled waveforms show an encouraging correspondence with some measured waveforms. This gave confidence that the model could be used to examine wave propagation around the tunnel, and allowed a scaled source to be developed for forward analysis of the main experiment.

INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralised zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Test work demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and 150tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime’s shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime’s behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

The theory of constraints (TOC) is a business improvement method that focuses on exploiting a business’s bottleneck to deliver the highest possible profit. Early applications were mostly in the manufacturing industry; however, the theory in itself is completely generic and has now been applied widely in other industries such as services, retail, software and distribution, amongst others. The intent of the approach is attractive – it focuses on the ‘silver bullet’ rather than ‘death by a hundred projects’, and it focuses on growth rather than cost cutting. Application within the mining industry has been limited to date, although there are a few applications emerging. This paper discusses how TOC can be applied to maximise value during the project planning phase and how to maximise profits when the mine is operational. The paper uses two case studies to illustrate the approach. Case study 1 uses the approach to improve tactical mine planning, which delivers an increase in revenue of 58 per cent. The second case study is a strategic mine planning example that delivers an increase in value of 77 per cent.CITATION:Finch, A and Elkington, T, 2014. Introduction The San Antonio mine is on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg and 120 miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. Since production was started in 1932, about 2,000,000 tons of ore have been mined. Currently in progress is an extensive development programme which involves 11,500 feet of crosscuts, 3,800 feet of raises, 1,753 feet of shaft sinking, and 160,000 cubic feet of slashing, all in footwall waste rock. It is the purpose of this .paper to indicate the necessity for this work and to describe the methods employed to carry it out. Where unknown factors are as prevalent as they are in the average Canadian gold mine, a definite answer cannot be given as to what is the most economical and efficient system for mining dipping deposits. At San Antonio, the host rock for the orebodies, locally termed basalt, occurs as a sill some hundreds of feet in width and dipping at approximately 45 degrees from surface to an unknown depth. It may be assumed that it continues well below the lowest depth established to date by diamond drilling. At present, a vertical winze (No. 3 winze) hoists the ore from the 2,360-foot level to the 1,600-foot level, on which it is hauled about 900 feet to No. 3 shaft, also vertical, and there hoisted to the mill bins on surface. To maintain ore reserves at a five-year figure, at full production, additional deep exploration was required immediately. It was decided to sink No. 4 winze, a vertical opening of the same size as the other operating shafts, to provide ten additional levels (17 to 26) at 150-foot intervals, with additional depth to allow for an underground crusher installation and usual loading-pocket facilities for three-ton skip-hoisting. The winze was bottomed at 1,753 feet below the collar, at a depth of 4,117 feet below surface, and is the deepest man-sized opening in Manitoba.

Current industrial compacting and briquetting practices are largely based on trial-and¬error techniques. This paper introduces a two dimensional finite element model of compacting/briquetting process in the roller press. Compared with other modeling techniques used in the past, finite element method offers the most versatile approach because it incorporates adequate information about powder behavior, geometry and frictional conditions and offers predictions for the density distribution, velocity field, stress distribution, roll force, roll torque and other important process variables. More over, when the model includes elasticity, it offers predictions on the internal stress state in the briquet after its exit from the pressing zone. This enables to perform realistic computer experiments which are helpful for establishing the pressing system design, forming cavity geometry and process conditions necessary to produce compacted or briquetted product with the desired properties.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

A Cu-conducting solid electrolyte was used to develop the sensor. Instead of measuring the potential across the electrolyte from the reference material to the Cu-containing phase, a potential was applied and the stable current measured. This gave reasonable readings for copper-tin alloys, which agreed with the theoretical calculations, but was less satisfactory in the case of mattes because the surface area of electrolyte presented to the matte phase varied from sensor to sensor. To overcome this problem the potential was applied, the current was measured and then reversed and remeasured and the ratio of the currents was calculated. The current ratio is shown to be independent of the resistance of the electrolyte and the surface area of the electrolyte offered to the melt, but strongly dependent on the activity of the copper

This paper describes the excavation of No. 1 Power Station Lift Shaft at the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Project. The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. "What affects and influences one’s perspective of the mining and metallurgical industries?One’s perspective of the industry we work in changes over time as a function of our experience as well as from the interaction we have with colleagues locally and probably even more so with those internationally. Furthermore, the ever-changing environment continues to impact the context in which one sees things. Living mostly in South Africa through its changes in the past fi fty years but also having the opportunity to travel extensively and work on projects abroad adds an invaluable richness to this more global perspective. One of the greatest challenges is how best to use this experience to endeavour to support the many potential opportunities in southern as well as sub-Saharan Africa. However, one has also to face the realities of how the best interests of the country and its peoples are sadly often not well served for various unfortunate reasons. Investment, education, regional stability, and good governance are some of the most critical considerations for the prosperity and survival of the region.The mining and metallurgical industry in southern and sub-Saharan Africa changed significantly during the post-colonial and apartheid eras as a result of global and regional developments that have impacted the ownership of businesses, the technologies used, and products produced in a manner that was not envisaged even fi fty years ago. Southern Africa’s mining and metallurgical industry has progressed from one based mostly on diamonds and gold in the late 19th century to a much more diverse one that involves the production of a variety of other precious, base, and ferrous metals and minerals as well as coal and industrial minerals. The infrastructure and manufacturing capacity was largely developed to meet the needs of this industry during its growth phases, but even though the dynamics have changed there is still a need for more efficient and effective support systems in the region."

"Vale’s Ontario Operations re-introduced Cu/Ni separation at Clarabelle Mill in 2006. The mill processes ores from a number of mines in the Sudbury basin. A saleable Cu concentrate is produced at 30-60% Cu recovery from mill feed, which has to meet the quality specification. In particular, Ni content in Cu concentrate must be less than 0.6%, otherwise, penalties will apply and diminish the value of Cu concentrate, in addition to the lost Ni value. Generally, a Ni grade of less than 0.4% is obtained in Cu concentrate. More recently, while processing Cu-rich ore, Cu concentrate contained more than 0.6% Ni which is abnormally high. Detailed mineralogical investigation shows that Cu-rich ore contains more millerite in comparison to typical Sudbury Ni sulphide ore. Millerite is found to be more floatable than pentlandite and is much more difficult to depress using high-lime aeration conditioning, which is the standard practice in Cu/Ni separation to float chalcopyrite while depressing pentlandite. The current operation uses sodium cyanide at 20 g/t to depress pentlandite and pyrrhotite. However, it is found that a high dosage is required to depress millerite. It is also shown that starch and dextrin are promising in millerite depression.INTRODUCTIONPrior to bulk smelting in 1991, Cu/Ni separation was carried out at Vale’s Copper Cliff Mill, Ontario Operation. The typical Cu concentrate grade was around 30% Cu and 1% Ni. This is very high in comparison to today’s value of 0.4% Ni and would not be acceptable for external processing. However, the Cu concentrate was processed internally at the Copper Cliff smelter/refinery, so the Ni contained in Cu concentrate was not lost and no actual penalties applied. During the SO2 abatement initiative, bulk smelting was chosen because of the perceived simplicity and consequently, Cu/Ni separation was eliminated (Agar, 1991) and the Copper Cliff mill was subsequently demolished. In 2005 and after more than one decade of bulk smelting, business changes required the removal of some Cu concentrate from Clarabelle Mill bulk concentrate to provide smelter capacity for Voisey’s Bay concentrate in the Copper Cliff smelter. In essence, this strategy calls for Cu removal at Clarabelle Mill (Lawson, 2006). In this case, Cu concentrate is sold externally and it must meet the quality requirement of less than 0.6% Ni."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. This system has been proposed for and accepted as a plant scale trial in the first half of 2010.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation of sulphide ores ahead of smelting and refining is a common practice. In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.

Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal-conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert as present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to Continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which Vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method, and a continuums analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of lanes. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation. Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal-conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialed the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, site specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tills, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine root through to the ground surface. The fact that both subsurface and surface subsidence characteristics have tied in well, gives greater confidence for predictions made from these models
