"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

The Morobe Goldfield inPapua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23 t) and Edie Creek (4 t) and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (78 t), Kerimenge (36 t) and Hamata (30 t).Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.   It is proposed that magmatic fluids which evolved from parent melts to the high level Edie porphyry stocks mixed with convecting meteoric fluids and were channelled along major structure and diatreme contacts. Proximal to the intrusives, gold mineralisation is associated with deposition of pyrite-hematite-quartz+/-magnetite-gold (Hamata) and pyritebasemetals-quartz-gold (Wau). The mineralising fluids were hot, and periodically saline due to pulses of magmatic fluid. Gold is non-refractory and occurs as 20 to 30 micron blebs within the pyrite.   More distal from the intrusives or under late cooler conditions, mixing of cool dilute meteoric and magmatic fluids resulted in gold deposition associated with arsenic rich pyrite-and arsenopyrite-mineralisation (Kerimenge, Hamata and Edie Creek). Gold is refractory and occurs within the sulfides either as sub-micron inclusion or within the lattice.   CO2 and H2S gases which evolved off the upwelling hydrothermal fluids as a result of boiling and pressure reductions, condensed within superficial groundwater and formed cool oxygenated bicarbonate fluids. These fluids percolated back down the structures depositing manganocarbonate in the upper parts of the hydrothermal system. At deeper levels in the system mixing of the descending bicarbonate fluid with upwelling mineralised fluids deposited manganocarbonate-quartz-sulfides nonrefractory gold (Hidden Valley, Wau and Edie Creek).   At Kerimenge the cool bicarbonate fluids have also quenched a late stage magmatic fluid rising along high permeability structures. The quenching has resulted in deposition of non-refractory gold mineralisation associated with hessite (Ag2Te)-tennantite-chalcopyrite deposition.   Within the Morobe Goldfield, a transition from deeper level pyrite-quartz+/-hematite-magnetite to intermediate level quartz sulfide and quartz-carbonate-sulfide deposition to upper level, massive manganocarbonate deposition is recognized. Gold mineralisation can occur within all levels up the system.

"Four sulphide minerals - pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), pentlandite ([Ni,Fe]9S8), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) - contain the base metals and most of the iron in concentrates of platinum group metals (PGMs). In the pyrometallurgical processing of PGM concentrates these sulphides form a matte during smelting, and iron and sulphur are removed from the matte during the converting process. This paper discusses the roasting of Merensky concentrate in air before smelting, with the purpose of reducing the matte load to the converter.Roasting tests were conducted in a bench-scale rotary kiln at temperatures from 350°C to 700°C. The concentrate tested contained 17.4% sulphur and consisted of 23% pyrrhotite, 16% pentlandite, 11% chalcopyrite, and 2% pyrite. The particles were fine (d50 = 22 µm), and all the sulphide particles were liberated. Roasting in air at 550°C and 650°C for 20 minutes removed respectively 60% and 70% of the sulphur. The iron in the sulphides was oxidized to Fe3O4 (magnetite) at temperatures below 500°C and to Fe2O3 (haematite) at temperatures above 550°C. At 700°C the bed sintered and copper oxides formed. At temperatures below 450°C oxidation was incomplete: pyrrhotite remained and only 30% of the sulphur was removed. Smelting tests were conducted to assess matte fall and the deportment of copper and nickel to matte. It was evident that roasting resulted in lower matte falls (a drop of approximately 60%) compared with matte falls from unroasted concentrate. The iron and sulphur levels in the matte were reduced to below 3.5% and 22% respectively.This paper also briefly describes the mechanisms by which pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are oxidized during roasting. For chalcopyrite, the mechanism proceeds through an intermediate solid solution phase, which extends from Cu1.02Fe1.04S2 to Cu2.04Fe0.72S2 to a copper-rich solid solution of bornite (Cu4Fe1.4S4-Cu2S). The oxidation of pentlandite proceeds through a monosulphide solid solution (Ni0.39Fe0.53S-Ni0.74Fe0.15S) to a solid solution of heazlewoodite ([Ni,Fe]3}xS2). These mechanisms are explored in relation to chemical thermodynamics and microstructures."

Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.

"This paper was written during part of the author’s student co-op with Cargill Salt at its Avery Islandunderground salt mine in Louisiana. Blasting salt is a unique type of blasting that is different than blasting other rock types. The plastic nature of salt, along with its large swell factor make salt a challenge to blast. The Cargill salt mines use and have tested a variety of different methods for breaking salt in an efficient manner, however these blasting methods are rarely used in other operations nor talked about today."

The vibratory characteristics of full-scale sheet piles, vibratory driven into the ground, have so far not been described systematically in detail. This paper concerns the preliminary results of a series of full-scale field tests where both the driveability and induced ground vibrations have been continuously monitored. Furthermore, the results of measured ground vibration levels have been measured at two different sites characterised as having hard and easy driving conditions. In the light of the presented results, the paper briefly discusses how the complexity of a driveability and vibration prediction can be subdivided into three parts, namely, vibrator-, sheet pile-, and soil-related parameters, all of which significantly affect both the driveability and induced ground vibrations.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County constructs twin Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels through cohesive soils and rock beneath the Allegheny River and a narrow city street in Pittsburgh, PA. The tunnel alignment includes an historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and an office building constructed directly over the alignment during the design of the tunnel sections. This paper provides an overview and update of the general site conditions, TBM tunnel design, and support of excavation for the TBM launching pit. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The technology of the liquid-phase reduction process known as Romelt was developed in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1979. The pilot plant was constructed at the Novolipetsky Steel Works (Russia) in 1984. Investigations into processing zinc-containing blast oxygen furnace dust and slag from the Lead and Zinc Works at the pilot Romelt plant proved the perspective of using this technology for processing zinc and lead-containing materials. In this article, the description of Romelt technology, basic technological information of trials at the Romelt plant using zinc-containing materials, compositions of charging materials, metal, slag, gas and dust are presented. The influence of flue gas composition on the composition of zinccontaining dust is shown.

The evolution of the American Petroleum Institute (API) design method for axial capacity of driven piles in siliceous sands is explored, and complemented with an overview of how changes in offshore site investigation practice have increased the level of knowledge with respect to vertical variability of soil characteristics. Increased use of the cone penetration test (CPT) provides near continuous profiles of soil type and strength which can be used in calculation methods that address variation in local shaft friction rather than the API method which seems to have initially been based on observations of average shaft friction in relatively uniform sand deposits. Development of a formulation for CPT correlations to axial pile capacity in sand is discussed, along with implications to existing factors of safety used in routine design.

Waste blasting in iron ore operations can pose a number of technical challenges, including blasting through variable geology and blasting soft ground in wet conditions. Blast patterns are designed to be loaded with a specific range of explosives with unique characteristics and properties. Each explosive product will produce an optimal blast outcome for a given set of blast parameters and ground conditions. Sites characterised by softer rock typically require low-density, low-energy explosives. Historically, these products have contained a high ratio of porous ammonium nitrate prill and are only suitable for dry blastholes. When blastholes within a pattern are found to be unsuitable for such explosives due to wet, damp or muddy blasthole conditions, a new product is selected. While it is easy to switch products to match blasthole conditions, the different properties of the new non-ideal product can impact blast performance and increase loading times and costs.Flexigel™ is a solids-sensitised emulsion blend suitable for loading at variable densities and energies in dry, damp, muddy or wet blastholes. It is a universal product that can be loaded to match ground and blasthole conditions or complement other explosive products.At Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak site, Flexigel™ was trialled through a series of matched pair blasts in order to optimise blast outcomes in conditions that were non-ideal for existing explosive products and to reduce the overall cost of drill and blast operations. Flexigel™ yielded improved instantaneous dig rates and improved loading efficiency when compared to a traditional emulsion blend. The results also indicated that variable-density and variable-energy products afford greater flexibility for optimising blast outcomes across all ground and blasthole conditions trialled.Trials of Flexigel™ at Cloudbreak have shown that a variable-density solution is available for conditions where traditional explosive products are non-ideal. As such, Flexigel™ is able to fill a major void at any operation where the desired low-density, low-energy explosive product must be substituted for a more expensive traditional emulsion blend or heavy ammonium nitrate/fuel oil.CITATION:Andrew, D R, Morrison, K T and Tiedgen, J F, 2015. Reducing mining costs has become such an important factor in the German coal industry that operators are forced to work only those areas where production costs can be kept low. These areas will normally be located close to the mine shafts because they are easily accessible. Even the shaft pillar is now being considered as part of the winning zone. Before working coal in shaft pillar zones it is essential to assess the impact this will have on the shaft lining. There is a huge difference between sliding and strata-anchored shaft systems. However, if the overburden comprises lightweight soil both types of shaft will have a tendency to protrude from the surrounding ground. This paper presents the geomechanical reasons underlying this reaction and the methods used for predicting and measuring it.

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AlSO, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) jointly funded the development of a mechanical properties model for Hot Strip Mills. INTEG process group, inc. validated an enhanced version of the model under a project funded by the AlSI/DOE Technology Roadmap Program (fRP). The Hot Strip Mill Model (HSMM) version 6.0 allows users to easily set-up their mill configuration, simulate a rolling mill schedule and calibrate the model for a variety of grades of steel. Starting from reheat furnace drop out, the model simulates roughing mill stands (reversing and continuous), heat retention equipment (coil box and covers), finishing mill stands (tandem and Steckel mills), the run out table and the mill exit area. The HSMM uses a series of physical models to calculate both the thermo-mechanical and the microstructure evolution of steel being processed in a hot mill to predict its final mechanical properties. The enhanced HSMM was validated using a multitude of samples from several steel companies. Excellent agreement was obtained for tensile strength. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 ft below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana.
