There were 63 fatalities in the California petroleum industry in 1929, the largest number in any year since 1923 and an increase of 34.0 per cent over 1928, when 47 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalities coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Low strain dynamic tests are performed to evaluate the structural integrity of driven or cast-in-place concrete piles. This type of testing requires minimal pile preparation, and is simply performed by attaching an accelerometer to the pile head and striking the pile head with a hand held hammer. The measured data is processed by a dedicated system, inspected for wave reflections, and interpreted based on one dimensional wave propagation theory. Piles are normally tested shortly after installation so that problems can be identified early and corrective measures taken before construction of the superstructure. However, evaluation of existing foundations is occasionally required. Often, pile installation records are not available rendering impossible any rational foundation reanalysis. This paper discusses three case histories where low strain dynamic measurements allowed determination of pile lengths and structural integrity under existing structures where pile heads were not accessible.

The Peace River iron ore deposit represents the sole source of raw material for an integrated steel industry in Alberta. The ore has proved refractory to beneficiation by a number of techniques. A selective oil-phase agglomeration technique is described. Medium-grade concentrates, analyzing 48-53% Fe and 10-14% SiO2 were obtained with recoveries of about 75% of the total iron. These results appear to represent the optimum possible for this ore body.

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985. Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. The sulphur dioxide (SO2) for this process can be supplied either as liquid SO2, SO2 gas or as a sulphite-based salt. The majority of SO2/air operations have used sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent probably due to low capital cost. Liquid SO2 has also been used frequently, but due to concerns with safety and availability, this option is often not preferred. The solid salt sodium meta-bisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, but its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. Due to the high cost of SMBS, the increased capital cost for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant (green field or retrofit) usually has a pay-back of less than three years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas volume. Therefore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) E2 Regulations or the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and El Boleo).This paper focuses on the production of sulphur dioxide gas generated on site and on demand for the use in hydrometallurgical processes. The capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant is compared to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2."

A new copper continuous converting process was investigated to evaluate the possibility of its application in the commercial operation. The tests were performed both in the laboratory and in pilot plant scale. Bath smelting process with the use of the top submerged lance technology was applied in these tests. Furnace shape was modified to a lengthwise eylindrical one with a settling area. The furnace monitor was put in the settling area to check the furnace from inside, FeOx-Si02, FeOx-CaO and FeOx-CaO-Si02 based slag systems were used to check their efficiency, The optimum slag chemistry to have good metallurgical results was discussed and FeOx-CaO system with some Si02 content turned out to be preferable although it has not been practically used, In this pilot plant test feeding rate of I tIH of solid grain matte was charged consecutively for two weeks and continuous converting could be done successively. This process is expected to overcome the problems of existing processes and be easily applied in existing plants.

"Mineral exploration in Canada traditionally has gone from boom to bust in cyclical pat-terns following market and discovery cycles, but other endemic factors related to exploration financing and performance have contributed to the amplitude and recurrence of these fluctuations. In view of these problems, junior exploration is reviewed here in a marketing perspective, looking at the 4 Ps: Product, Price, Placement and Promotion.In the 1980s, MEDA incentives gave the shares of junior and mining companies significant price and promotion advantages, and contributed to excessive exploration funding. Many were thus led to minimize the basic values needed for continued investor interest: appropriate levels of product quality, sustained share value and customer satisfaction. Basic changes are needed to improve the marketing of junior mineral exploration in the future, with or without improved fiscal incentives. To be successful, the required improvements must come from the technical participants, but the financial partners also need to be involved.Exploration in Canada must be marketed with vigour, both in Canada and internationally. Exploration, mine development and mine production are essential to our economy. They are environmentally acceptable and they are welcome in Quebec and in most Canadian provinces and territories. Canadian exploration and mining are entrepreneurial industries that must take better advantage of their strengths and achievements and remove the shortcomings that hinder them: nobody can do it for them!"

Closed form solutions assume opening shape to be circular to simplify the calculation of the ground response curve for the design of underground openings. However, in mining and civil engineering works, non-circular openings are commonly excavated. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the ground response curve for such openings. In this respect, a simple model for circular, arch and rectangular shape underground openings subject to a hydrostatic stress field is the aim of this study. A comprehensive numerical modelling, using the finite difference method, based on numerical modelling code FLAC version 4.0, was carried out. In addition to shape of an opening, the effect of rock mass strength, opening size, in situ stress on strain (tunnel deformation to tunnel radius) of the opening in response to applied support pressures was investigated parametrically by developing models for each specific condition. The strain results for each excavation shape obtained from this large number of models against the normalized strength of rock mass and internal support pressure with in situ stress magnitude were evaluated by multiple regression analysis. As a result, a model that was well correlated to data was developed for an overall estimate of the ground response curve depending on relevant effecting parameters. The regression coefficients of the model were given for estimating both roof and sidewall response curve of each excavation shape. The model was verified by statistical tests and by an analytical solution. Diagrams were also established to highlight the influence of relevant parameters and to estimate the support pressure for a stable opening staying within the acceptable limits of strain. Strains occurring in a rectangular opening are found to be larger than those in the arch and circular openings for the other fixed parameters. In the mean time, larger strains occur around an arch shape opening than a circular opening.

Some years ago, a method was developed to incorporate a grout column around square-shaft helical screw-piles and anchors to increase shaft buckling resistance under compression loading. An additional benefit of this grouted shaft is to increase the load capacity in both compression and tension, depending on the geometry of the lead helical section and the soil conditions. Because of the unique construction procedure, the contribution of the shaft to the total capacity has largely been unknown. The behavior of grouted shaft helical anchors in clay was investigated by performing full-scale axial uplift (tension) load tests on a series of anchors installed at the University of Massachusetts Geotechnical Test Site. In order to isolate the contribution of the grouted shaft to the total load capacity, anchors were installed with a wooden dowel connection between the lead helical section and extension sections on three of the four anchors so that only the shaft resistance would be measured during the load tests. The grouted shafts ranged in length from 10 to 30 ft (3 to 9 m). Initial tests were performed approximately 5½ months after installation. Nearly four years after the initial tests were performed, the tests were repeated to evaluate any significant change in capacity with time and/or repeat testing (preshearing). The soil conditions at the site are presented along with the load-displacement curves for both the initial and repeat teats and a discussion of the analysis of the results. Repeat load tests showed an increase in capacity from the initial testing, however the percent increase was not the same for all depths. The results demonstrate that considerable shaft resistance can be developed in clays from the grouted shafts as might be expected. Depending on the L/D ratio of the shaft and the contribution of the lead helical section, at working loads the shaft capacity can dominate the behavior.

"The Williams Mine processes, on average, 6,450 t/d of gold bearing ore using two parallel grinding circuits, leaching and C.1.P., carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining. At present, each grinding circuit consists of a SAG mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier and a ball mill in closed circuit with two stages of cyclones.Since grinding has always constituted the largest portion of milling costs, the Williams Mine has been proactive in trying to reduce such costs through innovative changes. One project under consideration is the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen.This paper discusses the testwork performed to evaluate the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen, and the preliminary engineering performed to date.IntroductionThe Williams Mine, located in northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 kilometres east of Marathon, is part of the Hernia gold camp. The mine is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation and is owned by the Teck Corporation and Homestake Canada Incorporated. Operation of the mine started in October 1985 at a rate of 3,000 t/d. After a mill expansion in August 1988, throughput increased to 6,000 t/d. Production has increased steadily since the mill expansion and in 1995, an average of 6,450 t/d of ore was processed at a recovery of 95.1 %."

Pipeline or borehole free-fall transfer of material has long been done in support of underground mining. This paper addresses some characteristics and design elements in selecting systems suitable to the transferred media and the mine requirements. Though aspects of overall systems are discussed, principal attention is directed to the slickline/dropline/transfer line and the discharge diverter/rockbox/energy dissipator/boot. These terms are common to these systems, often used interchangeably, and will be used as appropriate to the material, equipment and construction. Following several design sections, fabrication and construction, and system operating and maintenance procedures are discussed.

In April 1997, Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) completed the 7,600-m (25,000-ft) primary access tunnel for the Yucca Mountain, NV proposed high-level nuclear waste site. K/PB then began boring an exploratory east-west cross drift tunnel at the site. The 2,681-m (8,796-linear ft)East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a rebuilt Robbins 5-m (16.4-ft)hard-rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project was completed in eight months.

Under contractural arrangements with the Bureau of Mines, Mountain States Research and Development, Inc. (MSRD) completed a technological investigation to determine the feasibility of in situ mining of metal commodities other than copper and uranium, The study was based upon available literature and experience. The selection of potential candidates for in situ mining was influenced by economic importance, probable amenability to in situ methods, and environmental considerations. Four metals (or metal pairs) were chosen for feasibility studies: aluminum (with a copper byproduct), gold-silver, and manganese were recommended for further study and action; cobalt-nickel was also recommended contingent upon preliminary laboratory leaching and recovery investigations and field geohydrological work. Mining and recovery plans and an economic evaluation are included. Other metals with potential for in situ leaching are lead/ zinc, molybdenum, and vanadium.

"Several base metal plants operate in low grade/high tonnage conditions which impose strict cost control on all fronts for their operations to remain profitable. This leads to decisions regarding plant design, procurement, operations and maintenance that often favor cost minimization over value optimization. This may hinder the representativeness of the metal accounting systems while this should be a priority in a low margin environment. Such poor representativeness not only creates confusion in plant scheduling but can also hide suboptimal metallurgical performance. Furthermore, this situation can run undetected for a while since one dominant feature of a poor metal accounting system is its poor self-awareness. During their practice, authors have particularly identified measurement bias and reproducibility, as well as their impact on metal recoveries as areas of concern. These issues have not been extensively reviewed in the specific context of precious metals in base metal plants. Pragmatic solutions are proposed either at the design stage for a new project or to retrofit an actual operation. These solutions should be based on a business analysis that set a value of information matching the contribution of precious metals as well as the potential to use such information to act toward increasing plant profitability. Conclusions are that trade-offs are an inherent part of the design/audit/retrofit of any metal accounting system in any plant processing either base or precious metals. However, compromises must be evaluated on economic/technical ground.INTRODUCTION Every mineral processing plant must produce metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where estimated saleable metal flows and inventories are published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimization, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that state of the art metal accounting is instrumental for mining companies to reach and sustain high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard, Randolph, & Wortley, 2014). However, producing a metal accounting report involves much more than just printing it (Lachance, Leroux, & Gariépy, 2015a). The underlying metal accounting system (Figure 1) is responsible not only for the reliable production of the metal accounting reports but also for the quality of the outcome. As such, the crucial tasks of its design/audit/retrofit should neither be seen as ancillary nor be left as an afterthought."

Ever since opening, the M25 motorway to the west of London has carried a rapidly increasing volume of traffic. The section of M25 between the junctions with the M3 and M4 motorways, which is in the near vicinity of Heathrow airport, is the most heavily trafficked section. Piling and ground treatment was required for motorway widening works over this route, which is 7 miles long. The foundation works were undertaken next to the live motorway and beneath the flightpath for aircraft landing and taking off at the airport. The paper describes the foundation construction techniques used, and the how the methods were affected by the live motorway and the height restrictions imposed by the airport. A unique method of piled retaining wall construction is also described.

The Si-0 equilibrium in liquid iron was investigated in some detail by Gokcen and Chipman1 who reported equilibrium constants of the following reactions: In each case the thermodynamic equilibrium constant K was obtained by extrapolating K' to infinite dilution. Their results on reaction [I] were consistent with those of earlier observers, and there seems to be little doubt as to the approximate validity of the equilibrium product determined. On the other hand, the results on reactions [2] and [3] indicated unusual curvilinear relationships between the activity coefficients of silicon and of oxygen and the silicon concentration. Since a linear relation is observed in all other similar instances, it was concluded that some source of error had affected the gas-metal equilibrium relationships. Recently the authors undertook a restudy of these equilibria with the view especially to establishing the equilibrium constant of reaction [2]. Their experiments, however, were discontinued before a tbroughly satisfactory answer had been obtained and consequently have remained unpublished until the present time. Quite recently Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana2 published the results of a very thorough study of these equilibria. It is the purpose of the present note to Compare these three sets of experimental data, a comparison which leads to Confirmation of the results of Matoba and coworkers. The experimental arrangements described by Dutilloy and Chipman were employed. A controlled mixture of Hz, H,0, and argon was led into the induction furnace over the surface of the Fe-Si melt contained in a silica crucible. On account of the slow approach to equilibrium, runs were continued for at least 8 hr and, in some cases, as much as 12 hr. Samples were taken by means of silica tubes at the start and during the final 4-hr period of each run. Out of twelve runs only seven appeared to have approached equilibrium with sufficient certainty to be reported here. The results of these experiments, all at 1600°c, are shown by the triangles in Fig. 1. Equilibrium was approached from both oxidizing and reducing conditions and the direction of approach is indicated by the shape of the triangle. Attempts to extend the study to higher silicon concentrations were unsuccessful on account of the transfer of silica from the metal bath to the upper portions of the crucible by means of a silicon-monoxide mechanism. Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana used similar methods and approached equilibrium from both sides. Their results at three temperatures are shown by the solid lines of Fig. 1. A line corresponding to 1600 deg is interpolated from their equations and is shown by the dotted line. The results of Gokcen and Chipman at 1600 deg in the range 0.02 to 2.0 pct Si are also shown. At concentrations up to about 0.6 pct Si, these investigators approached equilibrium from both directions, and their results in this range appear to be trustworthy. Above 1 pct Si, however, all of their experiments involved oxidation only, as shown by a decrease in the silicon content of the bath. It now seems certain that they failed to reach equilibrium at these higher silicon concentrations and that the curvilinear relation shown by their results is incorrect. It is evident that their results in the lower silicon range are in good agreement with those of Matoba and coworkers. In fact, a straight line drawn through their results would parallel the dotted line and would differ from it by only 0.05 in log K. The new data also lie close to that line. It may thus be concluded that the three sets of data are in good agreement and that the equations proposed by Matoba and coworkers for reaction [2] are satisfactory . As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.
