This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. A major manufacturer and user of machine tools had the need to install a screw press machine at its plant site with the following design load requirements: (1) Vertical Compression Live Load = 2000 kip (8896 kN) and Dead Load = 1000 kip (4448 kN), (2) Rotational Moment = 6600 ft-kip (8950 kN'm). The screw press machine was to be located within an existing manufacturing building. The bottom of the footing base was located 15 ft (4.6 m) below existing floor slab. A geotechnical investigation of the site indicated a 17 ft (5.2 m) thick initial stratum of stiff to very stiff clay underlain by a 14 ft (4.3 m) thick stratum of loose to medium dense sand. Beneath the sand stratum was soft rock described as weathered shale. Obvious concern was raised on the possible effects of the dynamic motion of the screw press and potential resulting settlement within the loose sand stratum. This combination of large loads and dynamic motion resulted in the selection of a helical pile and tieback system to support the concrete foundation. The helical pile foundation system consisted of a group of vertical helical piles installed into the shale rock and a group of inclined helical tiebacks set into the remaining portion of the clay stratum. Four load tests were conducted on the vertical helical piles in order to establish compression load capacity. The results of these load tests as reported herein, led to the addition of a limited number of tubular steel push piles in order to meet the project required Factor of Safety on the design loads. All of the helical piles, push piles and inclined helical tiebacks were successfully installed and the screw press is now installed and operational.

The present rapid growth of coal stripping in the United States is a curious reversal of the tendency of mining to proceed from outcrop to depth. A combination of technical and economic factors bas stimulated the use of stripping methods until today many million tons of coal We being recovered by open cuts from sites that an earlier generation of engineers would have passed by as not commercially mineable or, if workable at all, only by underground methods. The total quantity of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States by stripping in 1928, the latest year for which detailed figures are available, was 19,789,000 short tons. Of this, 71,000 tons came from small workings not equipped with power shovels and 587,000 tons from properties in which stripping and underground work were carried on at the same mine; but as neither of these types is representative of modern stripping practice, they will be omitted in the discussion that follows. The total from strip pits proper in 1928 was 19,131,000 tons, produced by 176 pits employing 385 steam or electric shovels.3 Figures by States are given in Table 1. I. INTRODUCTION The new slime-concentrating plant at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, was put into operation during March, 1914. This plant, which has a capacity of 26,000,000 gal. of slime pulp carrying 2,500 tons. of solid matter per day, consists of Dorr thickeners and Anaconda multiple-deck slime concentrators.' This plant is the culmination of a great deal of experimental work extending over a considerable period of time, which work will be described briefly in the following pages.

The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in the Republic of South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a blasthole. A number of inert materials were tested including ash, drill cuttings, river sand and crushed stone. It was found that the ash, drill cuttings and river sand did not effectively attenuate the shock wave and that the risks of sympathetic detonation or partial disruption of one or the other explosives deck in a blasthole was high. This became much worse when the inert material was saturated with water. Crushed rock was the most effective in attenuating the shock wave, but this material was very expensive to use because it had to be imported onto the mine.

Fine coal is defined as material with a maximum size of 1/2 in. Various methods for separate washing of such coal are discussed briefly because separate treatment can lead to a higher overall recovery of coal or to a product having a lower ash content.A felspar jig is discussed in detail because it is the method most recently adopted in Australia, and because it has the advantages of compactness, flexibility and automatic Gontrol, with minimum operator attention. This jig has a variety of adjustable controls to enable the desired results to be obtained from a wide range of coals and the general application of each control is discussed.The only separate treatment of fine coal in the Illawarra district is by felspar jigs on Bulli seam coal.INTRODUCTIONAll reasonably large Australian collieries now win coal by mechanical methods. but while mechanization leads to more economic production of high tonnages, it also changes the characteristics of the coal won. In particular there is an increased proportion of fines, and an increased ash and moisture content. However, specifications of coal for sale have become more stringent, and consumers now require coals in a definite size range with a lower and more uniform ash content, as well as with a low and uniform moisturecontent.These factors have led to the need to wash and grade run-of-mine coal at the pithead. In' plants where the whole of the run-of-mine coal is treated in a jig, some of the fine coal in the feed is beneficiated; the extent depending on factors such as the type of coal and the feed rate. However, for dense medium treatment, fine coal must first be screened out, and there may then be no washing of fine coal at all.

The activities of the Bureau of Mines include the development and testing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and other devices for respiratory protection, the development and tasting of devices for detecting dangerous or noxious mine atmospheres, and the training of men in the mineral industries in the use and care of this equipment to enable them to render effective service in mine rescue and recovery operations following mine fires and explosions, or under other conditions where irrespirable gases may be found in mines or mining plants. The first use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for com- bating mine fires and explosions in the United States dates back about 30 years. Previous to that time, exploration for any distance ahead of fresh air was virtually impossible without great risk to life; moreover, the men called upon to render service at mine disasters were not well-versed in the properties and physiological effects of gases likely to be encountered. It was also impossible to work ahead of fresh air to restore ventilation, and if many stoppings were blown out by an explosion, air had to be introduced into whole areas or sections at once without knowledge of the conditions ahead; moving an explosive mixture of methane and air over live fire had to

Working in New York City has become the graveyard of many Foundation Contractors. Varying subsurface conditions require Foundation Contractors to be aware of the conditions at each particular site and have the knowledge and equipment to successfully complete the project. Looking back, we can see that many of the methods and much of the equipment that were commonly used in the past have been replaced with newer methods and equipment, but sometimes the old methods prove to be the most reliable. This paper will describe examples of varying conditions and construction methods in sites that are close to each other. It will also show different construction problems that are encountered when working adjacent to existing subway structures, when excavating below the foundations of adjacent structures and when ground water is encountered.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

The paper examines the role of chain pillars in longwall mining layouts as used in several countries. The application of chain pillars in relation to their expected design role is discussed. An important feature is the specification of the pillar design to meet strata loading conditions as imposed by the mining and geological setting. The paper relates longwall width and chain pillar configurations to pillar size to satisfy anticipated loading and strength expectations. Laboratory work is referred to which examines criteria for pillar stability. Comments are made regarding the application of the findings presented in the paper, to different situations involving the use of chain pillars in longwall and shortwall mining systems.

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

The objective of this project was to develop technical data and evaluate performance and utility of leaky feeder communications systems currently used in North American underground mines. The desired information was obtained principally through on-site surveys. Altogether, six of the seven mining companies known to be using leafy feeder communications were visited. This report covers the findings of these surveys. In addition, the report provides a brief background summary of mine communications, a technical discussion of leaky feeder systems, and conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the survey.

This paper addresses the problem of designing a destress blasting procedure to reduce the incidence of rockbursting in hard rock mines. A review is made of the developed theory and practice of destress blasting in rockburst-prone ground. Specific reference is made to a recent survey of past and current practice with particular reference to Ontario mining operations. The need is identified for a more scientific basis for destress blast design and monitoring. Reference to developments in blasting technology as well as rock mechanics are then made to support a proposed, integrated design procedure and research strategy.

Incorporating an iron ore pelletising plant, a MIDREX'"' Direct Reduction Plant, and a mini mill, the conversion of iron ore fines to high- quality steel slabs in Western Australia is among the lowest cost routes in the world. The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

Summary Considerable test work has been done with the detachable type of carbide bit. In general, these bits improved drilling operations, but at a bit cost .greater than was compensated for by the reduction in man-hours of labour. Too few bits continued in service for the possible drilling life of the carbide inserts, and technical improvements or lowered first cost, preferably .both, are indicated ?in order that the bits can be generally acceptable as an economical drilling tool. In ?preliminary test work, the drill rods .with ?one insert of the chisel-bit type appear to be more trouble-free, to have a longer life, and to give a somewhat lower bit cost per foot drilled, than other types. INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to outline briefly the 'methods used and the results obtained in test work with tungsten carbide bits used in combination with the smaller bore, lighter weight rock drills. As various articles have appeared in the past few years giving the historical background ?and early development of carbide ?bits, this information will not be repeated. Table I lists the equipment used in the test work. The stopers weigh about 95 pounds and the jackhammers with airleg from 97 to 110pounds. The smaller rock drills are stated to deliver about 2,200 blows per minute at 1 to 30 rotation and to require 85 to 95 cubic feet of air at around 100 pounds pressure.

Southern Africa has a history rich in the pyrometallurgical processing of ores. Two of the alloys produced are high-carbon ferromanganese (74?83 per cent Mn) and silicomanganese (59?67 per cent Mn and 14?31 per cent Si). The largest land-based manganese ore deposit in the world is based in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. In 2010, 6.3 Mt of ore from the deposit was exported, mainly to China, Norway, Japan, and India, and an estimated 1.1 Mt beneficiated locally to produce manganese ferroalloys. In southern Africa the producers of manganese ferroalloys are Metalloys and Assmang, and of silicomanganese Transalloys, Mogale Alloys, and Match Corporation. Submerged arc furnace technology is utilized in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn) and silicomanganese, applying the discard slag practice in both instances. The carbon content of HCFeMn is reduced using converter technology and that of SiMn using the Perrin process. Ninety per cent of the world?s manganese ferroalloys production is consumed by the steel industry. The consumption (and production) of manganese ferroalloys therefore closely follows worldwide steel production. From 2001 to 2010, the doubling of the worldwide production of manganese ferroalloys can be attributed to an increase in production capacity in Asia and Oceania, with the largest increase in the production of SiMn. Manganese ferroalloys produced in Asia and Oceania are mainly for the local market, with North America, Europe, Russia, and Turkey the major markets for alloys from southern Africa. The major challenges faced by the southern African manganese ferroalloy producers are increasing electricity tariffs and productivity of labour, which require a concerted effort by all parties involved to achieve a satisfactory solution. Gas stirring, simultaneous arcing, chemical additions are some basic steps in the secondary steel making. From tap to team however, there are enough uncertainties and several in-situ decision making required to match the fmal composition and temperature in the given amount of processing time. Currently available control algorithms rely on overall material and heat balance coupled with a self-learning regression based tuning of model constants. In this paper we demonstrate the capabilities of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in modeling and analyzing the thermo-chemical aspects of secondary Steelmaking. These models take advantage of scientific and engineering advances in computational tools and provide almost real time speed of analysis. This can be a very effective tool for operator training, process debugging and improvement as well as new innovations.
