In this report, the application of the PHU/MVS program is demonstrated through the use of a simple but realistic mine ventilation program. The report details, the problem description, the input data required and the various output features of the simulator. The PSU/MVS program is written in Fortran IV for use with IBM 370/168 computers. A version of the program that can be used in CDC computers is also available. A ventilation network consisting of 531 branches, 300 nodes and 5 fans took 48 seconds for solution on The Pennsylvania State University's IBM 370/168 computer. Appendix I of this report is the User?s Manual for the program. Appendices II and III contain the input data listing, and selected output listing for; the application. Appendix IV provides tables for leakage, friction factors and shape factors.

The prediction and control of ground deformations due to underground mining are important considerations in the permitting, planning, and monitoring of coal mining operations. The prediction of mining-induced ground movements using the influence function method is a mature technology and is widely used in many coal basins around the world. Such movements mainly include subsidence, horizontal displacement, and horizontal and/or ground strain. Predictions can be accomplished using regional subsidence parameters and site-specific data.

New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data indicate that the Leron Formation in the Markham Suture Zone, Papua New Guinea (PNG) represented Pleist- ocene alluvial fan-delta deposition in shallow marine to lacustrine environments. The distribution of sedimentary regimes in the Leron Formation indicates that during collision zone evolution, various tectono-sedimentary regimes do not always track the movement of the triple-junction systematically as idealized by Crook's (1989a) model. The migration of various tectono-sedimentary regimes are also controlled and influenced by the effects of second-order geometric features of the convergent margins. Leron Formation in the Markham Valley represents late to post-collisional marine to fluvial molasse. Foraminifera indicate that the collision and concomitant suturing of the Markham valley occurred after 1.32Ma.

The purpose of Volume II of this study is to provide a general plan for the pilot testing of two materials which could be used to tag explosives for both pre- and postdetonation identification and of tracing techniques which would thereby aid the investigator of an unauthorized bombing or explosion in being able to determine the source and/or user of the explosives. Volume I described the planning factors by which the tagging of explosives could be implemented on a National basis. 1.2 BACKGROUND Tagging explosives at the time of manufacture with a taggant material that could survive detonation, be recovered, and provide an investigative lead has been seriously studied for several years. This concept has gained widespread support among many law enforcement groups because of the scant clues that can presently be found among bombing residue.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

A new minerals engineering education programme is being developed in Australia which aims to provide tertiary institutions with a package of educationally sound, high quality courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals. The programme is jointly funded by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and brings together academics from a number of leading Australian universities, each developing modules in their particular area of expertise. The University of Queensland (UQ) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre(JKMRC) are jointly responsible for modules in several areas including comminution, physical separation and circuit design and optimization. Other modules are being developed by the University of South Australia (with the Sir Ian Wark Centre), Curtin University and Murdoch University. The major challenge of the programme is to provide a high standard of education that is accessible to students who may be located at several different institutions and some of whom maybe a long distance from the primary course leader. Rather than taking existing course material and putting it ‘on the web’, the programme aims to improve on past teaching practice through creative pedagogy and the development of interactive multimedia learning resources. Communications technology is used in an unobtrusive way, and the World Wide Web is used to create a flexible, user-friendly learning environment rather than to facilitate delivery of content. This paper describes the instructional design template currently being used and results of early implementation trials with groups of local and remote students.

The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.' The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

Reactions of gold?phosphino complexes [(AuX)(PR3)] (X= Cl, Br, I; R = organic rest) with Se(SiMe3)2 lead to the formation of gold complexes with chalcogenide bridges. The reaction of the complex Ph3PAuCl and tBuSe(SiMe3) gives the cluster [Au5Se2(PPh3)4]Cl 1. The in situ preparation of the complex [(AuCl)2dpph] (dpph = Ph2P(CH2)6PPh2) by reaction of dpph with Me2SAuCl, and subsequent reaction with Se(SiMe3)2 leads to the formation of [(Au3Se)2(dpph)3]Cl2 2. Reactions of the gold(I) complex [(AuCl)2dpppe], (dpppe = Ph2P(CH2)5PPh2) with Se(SiMe3)2 and InCl3 in different molar ratios lead to the formation of [Au10Se4(dpppe)4]InCl5 3 and [Au4(SeInCl3)2(dpppe)2] 4. The reaction of [(AuCl)2dpph] with Te(SiMe3)2 and GaCl3 produces the isostructural cluster compound [Au4(TeGaCl3)2(dpph)2] 5. From the reaction of Se(SiMe3)2 with [(AuCl)2dppe] (dppe = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2) and InCl3 [Au8Se4In(dppe)4](InCl4)3 6 can be isolated. The structures of 1 - 6 were determined by X?ray diffraction.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. H. E. McKinstryl visited the mine and recognised that the ore occurred primarily on the flatly dipping sections of the vein, as distinct from the steeply dippingsections, in a wide shear zone with reverse movement. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. Mission Bay is a 300-acre reclaimed site in San Francisco, California, that is currently being redeveloped. Plans include new neighborhoods, parks, a new University of California, San Francisco, research and development campus, a biotechnology campus, and commercial office buildings. New infrastructure is being constructed throughout the site, consisting of utilities, pump stations, and roadways. Previously, Mission Bay was a part of the San Francisco Bay. Reclamation of the shallow bay coincided with the booming development in San Francisco in the 1880s and continued through 1920. Subsurface conditions are extremely variable throughout the site. The stratigraphy generally consists of 5 to 45 feet of fill, up to 140 feet of weak, compressible clay (?Bay Mud?), dense sand, stiff clay, and bedrock of the Franciscan Complex that has been encountered 5 to 210 feet below the ground surface (bgs). Geotechnical issues related to these subsurface conditions include liquefaction, lateral spreading, settlement, and adequate foundation support. This paper presents case studies of the geotechnical aspects of design and construction of several buildings in Mission Bay, highlighting the similarities and variability in the subsurface conditions and the different conclusions and solutions developed for each project. The case studies will include: 1) a building supported on steel H-piles where the depth to bearing varies from about 70 feet bgs in one half of the site to 165 feet bgs in the other half; 2) a building supported on precast, prestressed, concrete piles bearing in a thick, very dense sand layer; 3) a building with over 100 feet of Bay Mud supported on 120- to 180-foot-long PCPS concrete piles driven to bedrock adjacent to buildings supported on steel H-piles driven to bedrock; and 4) sites where auger pressure grouted displacement piles (APGD) and Tubex piles were installed. Case studies will include results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing and static pile loads tests, where performed.

"Sirius Minerals is a UK based fertilizer development company focused on advancing into operation its polyhalite project in North Yorkshire, England. The operation is known as the Woodsmith Mine which has an estimated 2.7 Billion Tonnes of reserves and is currently in the construction phase. DMC Mining Services was selected to carry out the construction of four shafts for the project, a production shaft of 6.75m diameter to a depth of 1594 m, a ventilation shaft of 6.75 m diameter to a depth of 1565 m, and two additional shafts to support the construction of the material transport system (the MTS and Lockwood Beck intermediate) to 360m in depth for servicing the underground conveyor network for transport of product from the mine site to the costal port facilities located at Teasside. This paper will review the status of the project to date and the innovative approaches that DMC is utilizing to ensure a safe and successful shaft sinking project. INTRODUCTION The Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire is a Sirius Minerals-owned deep potash and polyhalite mine located near to the hamlet of Sneatonthorpe, Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, approximately 75 km east of York. The area of interest is more than 700 km2. The £3.2 billion project is to develop the Woodsmith Mine to extract polyhalite, and a tunnel system to transport it to a materials handling facility and harbour at Teesside. The site is the world's largest and highest-grade deposit of polyhalite and is expected to produce 20 million tonnes of polyhalite, potash and POLY4 per annum, as well as create over 1,000 direct jobs and many more indirectly. It has the potential to generate over £2 billion of annual exports for the UK. As the project will require mining to be undertaken in the North York Moors National Park, many objections were raised about the mine. Sirius Minerals has gone to great lengths to ensure that the project is sensitive to the local landscape, including: mineshaft head frames that will be positioned below ground to reduce their visual impact; surface buildings will be kept to a minimum; and the entire site will be landscaped and screened by existing woodland to blend in with the surrounding area. The project will also abide by strict environmental limits which govern our activity during the construction phase."

Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

Water is the main medium for removing impurities from iron ore during wet processing to achieve a higher quality product. However, there is a substantial increase in freshwater consumption due to an increase in demand from the following two factors: in the past 55 years the world population has doubled from 3 to 7.5 billion and crude steel production has increased five times from approximately 350 to 1662 Mt/a (IISI, 2008). Furthermore, social development in developing countries exacerbates water consumption making freshwater an increasingly valuable resource with an average distribution of 70 per cent for agriculture, 20 per cent for industry and only ten per cent for domestic consumption (Hourtolle, 2005; OECD, 2009). Rapidly changing regulations over the access and preservation of water across the world indicates the growing importance of this issue, so the mining industry must adapt to this continual change and must be committed to increasing the efficiency of water usage.Tailings dams receive most of the water used by the process plant. In arid regions where evaporation is high and availability of water low or non-existent, technical solutions other than the conventional tailings dam, such as thickened and/or filtered tailings, exist to optimise the recovery of water and reduce the need for external water consumption. However, these solutions present additional challenges, such as energy consumption and transportation from the process plant to the ultimate storage area.This paper considers a range of alternatives covering thickening and filtering, transportation and storage, water return, closure and rehabilitation. Mining projects in the future will be more affected by the rising cost in water and tighter regulations in accessing water and energy. Good tailings management can contribute significantly to reducing the dependence on these two key commodities (water and electricity), improving the resilience of iron ore projects especially in arid regions and areas with high competition for water.CITATION:Vuillier, C and A Roshdieh, A, 2017. The New Idria Mining and Chemical Co. owns and operates the New Idria mine in southern San Benito County, Calif. During 1957-59, the New Idria mine was the largest producer of mercury in the United States and its alltime production of over a half-million flasks was exceeded only by one mine. It is one of the oldest and most consistent producers in California. With the exception of 1921-22, the mine has an annual production of mercury dating back to 1854. This paper by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the exploration, development, mining, and furnacing of mercury ore at the New Idria mine. Figure 1 is a view of the furnace plant of the New Idria mine. The purpose of this report is to promote the development and conservation of our mineral resources by dissemination of technological information on mining and processing procedures, and related practices at operating mines.

The Kwinana (Western Australia) and Gladstone (Queensland) industrial areas are among the few dozens of heavy industrial areas globally that demonstrate significant levels of regional resource synergies. Such synergies are also referred to as æindustrial ecologyÆ or æindustrial symbiosisÆ. Fundamentally they involve the exchange of by-products or sharing of utilities between companies in close geographic proximity to achieve competitive advantage and environmental benefit. A concerted research effort is currently underway to foster greater realisation of regional resource synergies in minerals processing intensive regions, in Australia and internationally. This paper summarises current insights from the foundation research into engineering tools and technologies and enabling mechanisms for regional resource synergy developments. Regional resource synergy developments were reviewed for 16 international and two Australian regions. It was found that Kwinana and Gladstone compare favourably with the well-regarded international examples of regional synergy development. Given the fairly strong evidence that self-organisation is critical for regional synergy developments, an implementation model has been proposed that captures entry points for synergy developments at the level of platform (industry collaboration), process (developing synergy opportunities) and project (assessing and implementing specific synergies). It was also found that regional synergies have so far developed in the absence of specific methods for identification and screening of synergy opportunities. Moreover, very limited attention has been paid to the associated technological and engineering challenges. The current technical research effort therefore targets: the development of a toolset for the identification and development of potential synergy opportunities; and assessment of technology needs and opportunities for regional synergies involving water, energy and materials recovery and reuse.

The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

MANY mechanical advances have been made on mining equipment during the year 1951. There have been a number of trends established and many modifications made on open-pit equipment to increase the efficiency and availability of all the machines necessary in the moving of overburden and iron ore. Some years ago, the trend toward larger shovels for the loading of off-highway trucks began, but in the last year, it has become general practice to use the 5 to 7 ¼ -yd quarry-type shovels in the loading of haulage units. For years these larger shovels were used in the locomotive haulage pits. As the truck capacities increased from 15 to 20 to 30 tons, the need for larger loading units became apparent. Today in most mines, large shovels are in evidence and a few 8-yd shovels will be delivered this year for loading off-highway trucks. Torque Converter-Shovel The Diesel-driven shovel with its friction bands has been modernized with the torque converter. There have been about ten shovels remodeled to take a torque converter in the drive system. The large high-torque, low-speed Diesel engine was removed and replaced by a high-horsepower, high-speed, automotive-type engine. This engine was connected directly to the torque converter. The torque converter was connected to the shovel through the standard original sprocket and chain. Dual governors controlled engine performance. One governor controlled the high idle of the engine; the other governor, which is connected through a flexible shaft to the output shaft of the converter, controlled the loading of the engine. With this dual governor hook-up, the engine anticipates load conditions and is operating at high idle and full throttle before the shovel load is transmitted back through the converter to the flywheel. It has been found that with this automotive-type engine and converter, the shovel capacity has been increased about 20 pct. Also, the wear on the friction bands, breakage of hoist cables, and other mechanical breakages has been reduced materially. Alloy-Steel in Shovels The shovel equipment manufacturers have been experimenting with low-temperature-strength, high-alloy steels to combat the excessive breakage that occurs in extremely cold weather. High-nickel alloy steel has been used in critical areas that are affected by low temperatures, the most notable being dipper sticks. Most shovels ordered today are equipped with some of this special, alloy steel. More and more manganese alloy is being used for replacement parts such as shovel pads, idlers, drive sprockets, etc. Although the initial cost of these parts is considerably higher than the standard replacement items, the life of these manganese parts is considerably longer and well worth the added expenditure. Dipper-teeth repair is still a problem. Most companies use the small replaceable inserted tooth. It has become common practice among some of the companies to "job out" their dipper-tooth repairs to outside welding companies. This necessitates an additional inventory of teeth, but it does guarantee an adequate supply of replacement teeth at all times. These contractors have set up their shops on a production basis and can do an acceptable job at a high rate of speed. Thermite welding has been used in retipping teeth. To date, the process cannot be called successful but with improvements the time required to repoint the dipper teeth will be decreased considerably. The submerged arc process has been tried in the replacement of these dipper points, but like thermite welding has not proven successful.
