Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world class, polymetallic deposit that started production in 2010 and is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, type and spacing of support and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play an important effect on the stability of roadway. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures and water softens some rocks and promotes the closure problem. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory rock tests.

An important class of mining problems involves excavations in planar seam or vein-type deposits. In many instances it can be assumed that the seam is at 'infinite' depth in a homogeneous, isotropic or transversely isotropic, linearly elastic rock mss, and that the normal to the plane of the seam is a principal stress direction. Rational planning of excavations in such deposits requires a knowledge; of the stresses and displacements induced by complicated, irregular excavation geometries in the plane of the seam. This problem previously has been solved either numerically or by means of an electrical resistance network analog. Both of these methods effectively simulate the mined portions of the seam as a dislocation in an otherwise continuous mass, and determine the complete solution in terms of the stresses and displacements at the seam. In both cases, the plane of the seam is divided into a number - say, M x N - of squares, and the solution to the problem is determined in terms of the solution to an M x N system of equations. The numerical approach requires that these equations be solved explicitly, while the analog; solves them instantaneously with current analogous to stress and voltage to displacement. A purely numerical solution of practical problems can require a substantial amount of computer time, particularly in situations that demand some sort of sequential analysis, either due to successive mining or to nonlinear behavior of the seam material. This report describes a combined analog-digital computer system for solving problems that are impractical when either device is used separately. The digital computer and the analog are interfaced so that the digital computer can receive information from the analog via a switching matrix and an analog to digital converter, and can activate points of the analog via another switching matrix and a set of digital to analog converters. The resulting hybrid system can be used to simulate arbitrary "stress-strain" characteristics for any portion of the seam by an iterative procedure similar to the initial strain method used in nonlinear finite element analysis. Thus, the hybrid system combines the speed of analog computation with the decision-making capability of the digital computer: the analog instantaneously solves the set of equations, and the digital computer decides how the initial strains must be altered for the solution to be compatible with the prescribed "stress-strain" characteristics for the seam material. The hybrid computer system has many implications for rational planning of underground excavations, since it allows practically any type of inelastic seam behavior or artificial support characteristics to be simulated. Inelastic seam behavior, for example, might be due to either rock failure or to time-dependent deformation.

"Lee, Yu-Chen, and D. Eugene Rannels. Alveolar macrophages modulate the epithelial cell response to coal dust in vitro. Am. J. Physicl. 270 (Lung Cell. Mol. Physiol. 14): L123-L132, 1996.-The response of the alveolar epithelium to coal dust exposure is poorly understood. Coal or other dusts may act on the epithelium directly or indirectly through nearby alveolar macrophages (AM) that produce cytokines and other soluble products. AM and type II pneumocytes (T2P) were thus exposed to dust in coculture to evaluate their possible interactions. Anthracite coal dust PSOC 867 increased synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) components by T2P. AM alone did not produce ECM. Similarly, coculture ofT2P with AM (3.75:1) had little effect on epithelial ECM synthesis. In contrast, coculture ofT2P with AM significantly increased PSOC 867 effects on T2P rates of ECM synthesis, ECM fibronectin content, and T2P levels of fibronectin mRNA. AM-conditioned medium did not change the PSOC 867 effect on T2P. Neither control nor PSOC 867-treated AM on Falcon culture inserts (0.45-µm pore size) over T2P stimulated ECM synthesis by either untreated or dust-exposed epithelium. Thus AM-mediated changes in ECM synthesis by PSOC 867-treated T2P require close cell-cell interactions, suggesting a role for cell-cell contact or for short-lived soluble mediators of the AM effects. DEVELOPMENT OF PNEUMOCONIOSIS, a chronic disease of coal workers that results in pulmonary fibrosis and low lung compliance, is associated with inhalation of mineral or coal dust in the work place (14). Although the pathology of pneumoconiosis has been studied extensively, cellular mechanisms that cause changes in lung structure and function are not fully understood. Particulate matter that enters the respiratory system distributes according to size, with larger particles being removed in proximal airways. Dust components of small size may enter distal alveolar region, which is populated by two types of epithelial cells, type I and - type II cells, and by alveolar macrophages (16). Each of these cell types may interact with inhaled particles, but only the effects of coal dust on alveolar macrophages have been studied extensively. Less is known regarding the response of the alveolar epithelium, or of effects on epithelial cell-alveolar macrophage interactions, in the dust-exposed lung.Function of the alveolar epithelium is well known to be influenced by the underlying basement membrane, or extracellular matrix (28). Alveolar epithelial cell extracellular matrix interactions, which may involve modulation of cell migration, attachment, or differentiation (17), are reflected in type II cell morphology, metabolism, secretory activity, hormone responsiveness, lamellar body content, and gene expression (21). The extent to which basement membrane modulates differentiation of the overlying epithelium is determined by both molecular composition and three-dimensional structure of the matrix. Type II epithelial cells in vitro synthesize, secrete, assemble, and degrade a variety of basement membrane components, including laminin, fibronectin, type IV collagen, and thrombospondin (22, 27). How expression of these components is regulated, directly or indirectly, upon exposure of the alveolar epithelium to injury by coal dust or by other particulates remains to be resolved."

In sampling a process stream, conventional sampling theory deals only with the variation of the analyte content and neglects the impact of the variation in the mass flow on the sampling variance, whether the sampling regime is time-based or mass-based. This is an obvious simplification of the real state of affairs and it is worthwhile to study this impact via simulation.With a facility to simulate large (long) random functions having some thousands of points in the function and the ability to impose covariance functions on the mass flow and analyte variations, such a study is possible. It is also possible to evaluate the impact of correlation between analyte content and mass flows.This paper describes a limited study of the variance increase due to mass flow fluctuations over the usual sampling variance due to analyte variation during the sampling period. The bias in the sampling result is determined for specific modes of correlation. Simulation methods are used as they are the only means by which a sampling result can be compared to the true assay for the lot; in the physical circumstances of mineral process analysis, it is never possible to determine the true process stream assay.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. Crucible melt extraction yields short metal fibers with eqivalent diameters as low as 50 µm from almost arbitrary metals and alloys. Highly porous components can be made from such fibers by suitable deposition and sintering methods. This technology is being developed at the Dresden based Department of Powder Metallurgy and Composite Materials of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (IFAM) and has been applied to gold alloys and iron-base alloys containing small additions of precious metals. From the manufactured gold fibers, sintered structures were made for decorative applications. Additionally, it was found that due to rapid solidification during the fiber formation, precious metals can be finely dispersed in ironchromium- aluminum (FeCrAl) and FeAl20 alloys. Good catalytic activity at elevated temperatures was found in compositions containing 3 wt.-% Ce and 0.5 wt.-% Pt.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Line was conceived as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a partially underground light rail line, announced in 2007 as part of the Transit City plan, which included the implementation of six other light rail lines across Toronto.There were 43 stops planned for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, 13 of which would be underground . For those underground stations a lot of specialty foundation works needed to be carried out. King piles, soldier piles with lagging and secant piles were mainly required fulfilling the tasks of installing the retaining wall system.The paper will focus on the original design and alternative solutions, discussing the benefits and limits of these. It will also explain the installation process in general as well as some specific features related to specific site conditions, e.g. limits in installation depth, soil characteristics etc. The required equipment will be explained showing the benefits and limits.INTRODUCTIONThe Eglinton Crosstown project is a 19-kilometre LRT line that will bring much needed relief to the transit woes of Torontonians. Traversing the city in an east-west slice across the midtown artery of Eglinton Avenue, the Crosstown rail line involves a combination of 15 underground stations and 10 atgrade surface stops. It is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects under way in North America today. Aecon has joined partners ACS Infrastructure Canada, Ellis Don, and SNC-Lavalin to form Crosslinx Transit Solutions (Crosslinx).As with many of today’s mega public transportation projects, the Crosstown LRT follows the Public- Private Partnership (P3) model. Aecon is an equal partner in the $5.3-billion Crosslinx consortium to develop the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project in Toronto. Upon the LRT's completion in 2021, Metrolinx, the region’s transit authority and also the project client/owner, will turn to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to operate it. The impact of this highly anticipated LRT line on commuters in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is expected to be dramatic and immediate once the first train leaves the station five years from now. In fact, Metrolinx is estimating that within its first 10 years of service, the Crosstown line will be carrying 5,500 passengers per hour (in peak direction) and making 100 million passenger trips annually."

"Concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics were applied to study two cases of failure, namely an equalizing beam from a tandem rear axle of a highway tractor unit and the main beam of a flat bed trailer. In the first case, the presence of a crack, initiated by stress corrosion cracking followed by significant fatigue crack propagation produced a state of stress which was sufficient to produce brittle failure. Calculation of the fatigue life agreed with the number of cycles that the structure experienced before final fracture. In the second case, it was demonstrated that a combination of low temperature and high loading rate was sufficient to cause brittle fracture.IntroductionFailure analysis of engineering components has generally been carried out without the benefit of fracture mechanics. It is generally understood that real structures inevitably contain internal or surface flaws which under an applied load, may propagate to fracture. Fracture mechanics relates the applied stresses to the crack size in specified geometries. Since its introduction approximately thirty years ago, fracture mechanics has evolved as a design philosophy which can be used to develop fracture-safe designs. It can be also applied in analysis of failures, to ascertain if sound design and fabrication methods have been used."

Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). This work underpins the development of a new continuous steady-state Sink-Hole Fluidiser, applicable to the dry separation of iron ore fines.CITATION:Kumar, D, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. An assessment of U.S. western hardrock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hardrock mining machines. Of the operators, 96% had daily noise doses that exceeded the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214% and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jackleg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners.

The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. Curiously enough, Hisinger and Berzelius simultaneously ascertained the existence of the same...

"Analyses of production logs of multiply fractured horizontal wells in unconventional plays show that only a small percent (~30%) of perforation clusters contribute to production. We present in this paper one possible approach to mitigating this problem, based on use of a fully 3-D numerical model of fracture propagation through a heterogeneous medium, by studying the influence both of spacing and of perforation friction on the initiation and propagation of simultaneous hydraulic fractures from a horizontal wellbore. The results indicate that while limited-entry perforating can help to equalize the lengths of fractures simultaneously growing from multiple clusters, it cannot equalize their widths. Both fracture width and fracture length can be equilibrated by combining non-even cluster spacing with limited-entry perforating. This has obvious benefits as it allows equalized placement of proppant across the entire series of perforation clusters, resulting in similar fracture widths and conductivities which enhances the likelihood that all clusters will contribute equally to production.INTRODUCTIONThere is substantial evidence from production logs and other information that during the hydraulic stimulation of horizontal wells, not all perforation clusters within a given stage will produce. One possible cause is the interaction between the hydraulic fractures emanating from each perforation cluster. Typically fractures created at the outer perforation clusters create “stress shadows”, i.e. increases in compressive stress in the minimum principal stress direction, which limit the growth of fractures growing from interior clusters; this is confirmed by modelling [1, 2, 3]. An example of this can be seen in Figure 1 which shows the final configuration of simultaneously propagating fractures from multiple, evenly spaced clusters when there is no perforation friction. The inner fractures are substantially shorter, reproducing the results by Bunger and Peirce [3]. The inner fractures also have substantially smaller widths.One approach to equalize the growth of simultaneously propagating fractures from a horizontal wellbore is by using limited-entry perforating as a method to equilibrate the flow rates into each of the different perforation clusters. Perforation friction is caused by the finite diameter of the entry points into the formation, and leads to a pressure drop across each perforation which is proportional to the flow rate squared. Fractures that take more fluid have a higher fluid velocity through the perforations than fractures receiving less fluid. This causes a larger pressure drop between the wellbore and more rapidly growing fractures, compared to the same pressure drop between the wellbore and the fractures that grow more slowly. Because pressure within the wellbore is approximately the same at each entry point, the larger pressure drop leads to less pressure being delivered to rapidly growing fractures, thereby decreasing their ability to propagate and reducing the amount of fluid they are able to receive. Because the mass rate of injection into the wellbore is constant, this forces more fluid into the fractures that were propagating more slowly, increasing their growth rate. It also increases the pressure required to drive fluid injection. The balance of these effects makes the system largely self-regulating and delivers more balanced fracture growth. While this effect is well known, it is often neglected in current numerical models."

"INTRODUCTION The oscillator and amplifier system described in this paper was developed specifically for driving sound generators of the type developed by H. W. St. Clair and described by him in an article 3/ published several years ago in the Review of Scientific Instruments.Nevertheless, with little or no alteration it can be used to drive any vibrating system in which the vibrating member must be driven at its resonant frequency; the only restrictions are that the driving mechanism be electrical in nature and that the vibrating member be accessible so that some type of pick-up can be coupled to it. Operation of the automatic frequency-control element in the oscillator, however, depends entirely on the operating characteristics of the vibrating member; therefore, in order to completely explain the operation of the circuit, it will be necessary to describe the construction and operation of the vibrator used with it. Only the essential features and characteristics of the vibrator will be described in this article, and the reader is referred to St. Clair's 4/ report for further details."

It also showed that there , are two versions of flash smelting: (a) Outokumpu flash smelting, which uses oxygen-enriched air blast and injects dry feed downwards into a hot furnace (b) lncoflash? smelting, which uses industrial oxygen blast and injects dry feed horizontally into a hot furnace. THE existence of large saline deposits in that flat arid basin, known as the Great Salt Lake Desert, has long been recognized, but the extent and great commercial value of these deposits has not been generally appreciated. That a very considerable interest has recently developed is indicated by the fact that about 263 prospecting permits-each covering about 2560 acres of land in this Desert-have been issued under the Potash Leasing Act (Act of 0ct. 2, 1917-40 Stat. 297), and patents granted on approximately 40,000 acres. It is reported that patents and leases have, or will be applied for on an additional 80,000 acres in the basin. , Tests have been made on probably less than 10 per cent. of the total area of the basin, but these have proved a practically unlimited supply of brine available -sufficient, probably, to. furnish the potassium and magnesium chloride requirements of this country for at least a hundred years.

Green rust (GR) are layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides, having a pyroaurite-type structure consisting of positively charged hydroxide layers and hydrated ions in interlayers. This special feature of GR is very efficient for wastewater treatment as the pollutants are easily taken in or exchanged with the anions in the interlayers. It can be simply and cost-effectively produced by electrocoagulation (EC). Chicken processing plant (CPP) produces large amount of wastewater containing variety of readily biodegradable organic compounds, fats, and proteins. The possible re-use of properly treated CPP wastewater would be economic and environment friendly. In this study, we present our work on treatment of CPP wastewater using EC, specifically for the removal of COD. Analysis of the EC-treated water for reuse in the same plant is discussed considering the U.S.EPA regulations. Two types of EC-reactors were used for this purpose. To better understand the treatment mechanism, EC-floc was also characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS.

"Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."
