"Operational challenges associated with solvent extraction (SX) plants include the effective on-line management of solids introduced from a variety of process streams. Solids are carried over from leaching circuits due to incomplete solid–liquid separation, may be formed as a result of chemical precipitation within the SX circuits, or introduced from downstream electrowinning operations. Solids in SX settlers result in operational challenges that impact plant availability and reduce optimized name-plate design capacity operation. Most available SX crud and bottom solids removal systems are limited in their effectiveness to handle high total suspended solids in SX circuits. Operations are often forced to take settlers off-line for complete removal of contained solids. These cleaning operations are hazardous, high risk, labour-intensive and costly in terms of production down-time and organic extractant and diluent reagent losses. Production pressure results in operations being reluctant to take SX settler units off-line for solids clean-out, resulting in continued operation of the SX, at reduced levels of mass transfer performance. Crud ForxTM is an SX solids removal system, for the on-line removal of interfacial and bottom solids associated with hydrometallurgical SX processes. A case study conducted at Glencore’s Mutanda Mining copper and cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrated the effectiveness of the Crud Forx. Benefits identified were an overall improvement in SX fire risk reduction, SX occupational health and safety and an improvement in copper mass transfer. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper extraction and purification processes are often associated with ultra-fine solids distribution profiles throughout the process flowsheet (Virnig et al., 1999). The level and impact of the undesired deportment of solids to process streams varies from operation to operation, but the common denominator for all operations that employ solvent extraction (SX) as a copper upgrading and purification step is that, at some stage, they will have to manage solids (crud) within the SX circuit. Available crud removal systems in the industry have had limited success in continuous, effective interfacial crud and bottom solids removal from SX settlers. Most operations use basic removal methodologies which, at best, only result in delaying the requirement for taking the affected SX settler stages off-line for complete clean-out. This operational methodology results in production loss, increased SX organic extractant consumption and adds occupational health and safety risk to SX operations. The integrated Crud ForxTM/Crud FrogzTM SX solids management system assists operations in on-line SX solids management. The system has been proven to significantly reduce the requirement for off-line cleaning of settlers."

The complex system has been developed for long-term assessment of world prices and sale volume of primary aluminium when using the analytical model of the market and market supply forecasts as well as economy development in the Western countries characterized by the industrial production indices as correct data of Western World aluminium consumption are absent, The important part of this system is the model developed for forecasting the degree of capacities utilization of smelters and refineries depending on the price level, The model contains a statistic part corresponding to the capacities distribution by the production cost, and a dynamic part determining the deviation from the static depending on the price variation dynamics, The developed complex system has been identified by the actual data of the world prices of smelter grade alumina and primary aluminium, conservation and reactivation of refineries and smelters in the Western countries within the period from 1992 to 2003. The system was used for primary aluminium and alumina price forecasts till 2020.

"The traditional lignin separation process from the precipitated suspension creates severe filtration problems by plugging of the filter medium due to the small particle size (20 to 60 µm) of the suspended lignins. The plugging causes further problems in the successive processing of the filter cake. A new lignin separation process has been developed at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus as a part of the Research and Development and Demonstration (R & D & D) project "LignoBioFuel". The new developed process separates lignin in the form of granules with diameters ranging from 100 µm to 300 µm. The restrainment of the granule’s size in their successive treatments is expected to result in higher filtration efficiencies and reduction in plugging of filter mediums. To evaluate the filtration efficiency, the filtration resistance of the produced granules as well as the conventional suspensions has been investigated. The results show that there is a 60 to 80 % filtration efficiency increase and around 60 % reduction in plugging of filter mediums with the lignin granules in comparison to the conventional suspensions. Furthermore the successive processing of lignin granules was easier due to their porous structures removing the impurities such as adherent acids and salts. The purity of the separated lignin was measured with their sulphur (reduced from 7 % to 2.7 %) and ash (reduced from 46 % to 0.5 %) contents. The newly developed process has displayed better results in comparison to that of the conventional process. The new process displays high potentials in optimizing and improving the present state of the art treatments and is promising several ecological, economical and environmental improvements."

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

Just an hour drive down MD 301 from National Harbor, construction to replace the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas ‘Mac’ Middleton Bridge (HNB) began in spring of 2020. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) contracted with Skanska-Corman-McLean (SCM) to deliver a new US 301 bridge spanning 1.9 miles from Maryland to Virginia over the Potomac River aiming to improve capacity, safety, and access of the roadway. The project area presented a geotechnical design challenge due to the installation of new bridge foundations in the problematic soils of the Atlantic Coastal Plain alluvial deposits. With the existing bridge remaining in service during construction, and the site’s logistical constraints placing new pile driving operations near existing abutments and piers, a complex instrumentation and monitoring plan was developed to ensure public safety throughout the project. This paper discusses the geological conditions of the project area, the collaborative approach of various design team members to develop an appropriate monitoring plan utilizing various instrumentation, an understanding of baseline conditional movements of the existing bridge, and impact response of adjacent construction activity to help deliver effective new bridge foundations while protecting the old ones.

Amtrak made a decision to replace an aging bascule bridge with a vertical lift bridge for their crossing of the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. The new lift bridge occupies the same alignment and shares the same foundations as the bascule span. During construction the deep foundation caisson supporting the bascule span settled and tilted. Investigation into possible reasons revealed interesting historical facts, both of the construction of the innovative open well caisson foundations and of the state-of-the-art in tremie concrete placing methods in use at the turn of the century. This paper describes both of these topics.

The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model for gyratory crushers to help in the prediction of energy consumption and to analyze dominant parameters that affect this energy consumption. The development of a gyratory crusher model was achieved in the following three main stages: mathematical representation and coding of the crushing process; building an amperage constant model to derive an energy-scaling formula; and modifying the amperage constant model to represent a full-scale model. Due to their significant influence on feed-size distributions, two blasting parameters, i.e., burden and spacing, were considered. The crusher parameters that affect energy consumption were also identified. A case study of an operating dolomite mine was performed. The results indicated that by changing the burden, spacing and crusher closed-side setting, the overall (blasting and crushing) costs could be reduced by 4.7% to 7.9% annually. It can also be concluded that burden and spacing values have a linear positive relationship with the crusher energy consumption, while closed-side setting values have an inverse linear relationship with the energy consumption.

Overexposure to respirable dust remains a widespread health hazard to roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines. Recently implemented mist drilling technology was evaluated for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures for roof bolting personnel. This work presents the findings from NIOSH field and laboratory studies comparing respirable dust levels on mist drilling roof bolter machines to dust levels measured on machines using a conventional vacuum drilling system. Gravimetric and instantaneous respirable dust samples were collected for multiple drilling cycles. These dust measurements were used to assess the potential dust control capabilities relative to conventional drilling. Controlled laboratory tests found 0.3 mg/m3 more respirable dust with mist drilling than with the conventional vacuum method. A separate field investigation of the two techniques observed higher dust levels around the mist bolting machine.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

The challenges of increasingly scarce water resources and the risk of dam failures has seen the mining industry turn to sustainable tailings management solutions such as dewatering and dry stacking. Filtering tailings has been seen in the past as a cost-prohibitive process for larger throughput mines. However, as larger pressure filters are developed, the economic case for filtered tailings has gained traction.Focus has largely been placed on the correct design and operation of the filters. It is critical, however, that the material handling portion of the disposal system is also properly designed and operated. Thorough testing at laboratory and pilot scale to determine the conveying properties of the filtered material needs to be conducted. This testing will insure the material handling system meets the important availability needs of the mine even during periods of variability in the upstream processes and mine plan.The control system must also be robust and flexible in design to compensate for this upstream process variability. Public-private partnerships (PPP) are gaining in popularity at the federal, state and local levels as the public sector seeks private capital to finance infrastructure and other projects that traditionally have been funded with public funds. In general, a PPP involves a development agreement between a public owner and a private sector concessionaire. Under the development agreement, the concessionaire is responsible for financing, designing, constructing and typically operating and maintaining the completed project for a concession period (often multi-decades in duration). The concessionaire typically enters into an agreement ? the design-build agreement ? with a design-builder to design and construct the project. The concessionaire may secure financing from banks, investors or from a combination of these and other sources (collectively the financier). While the PPP experience in the United States has been modest to date, an increasing number of projects involving tunneling or other significant subsurface work are already being delivered in the PPP mode. Public owners have significant options to address risk allocation for subsurface conditions on PPP projects. The same sound and fundamental principles of fairness in risk allocation that apply in other major subsurface projects should be applied and adopted in the PPP context

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. The following symbols will be employed in the discussion : Po = the normal pressure of the atmosphere, which, it is assumed, is the pressure existing at the level of the chamber. The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O'Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

By the term sorting one understands the separation of a material mixture into two or several products according to different material characteristics in the preparation technology. The oldest sorting procedure, the handpicking, is less and less used to separate different material mixtures because of the considerable personnel expenditure and the strict hygienic regulations at the workplaces in Europe. In general, the manual assortment is able to solve separation tasks, which could not be solved by machines so far. The picking is one of the most selective processing methods. However, the progress in the computer and sensor engineering today makes the creation of automatic picking devices possible, whose efficiency goes far beyond the possibilities of handpicking. Therefore in the future automatic picking will not only be applied to already common applications like the waste glass assortment by colour, but also to the assortment of complex composed material mixtures e.g. old shreddered cars. Thus, the automatic picking, supported by high performance computer systems and new sensor technology, gains more and more significance within many applications of waste processing. However, in order to apply automatic sorting procedures for different material streams within recycling processes, a substantial research and development need still is existing. The desire of the users is to sort more extensively in order to achieve products with bigger material varieties, In addition, the requirement of the accuracy of recognizing and sorting out of single grains rises, This lecture illustrates the procedure of the hand picking before it was employed in waste processing. Thus, a renaissance of a long forgotten method is happening in terms of today's state of the art procedure "automatic picking". Possible technologies, fields of application and future potentials of this technology are pointed out.

In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.
