This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

This report concerns cooperative milling investigations of the Central mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining &. Smelting Co, The work carried on at the Central mill and the Rolla, Station shows that: It is possible to reduce the Central mill heavy-medium plant tailings by 0.05 to .15 percent zinc; the 3/16-inch to 10-mesh fraction of the jig feed can be treated by sink-float to obtain a tailing containing only half as much zinc as the jig tailing; Humphreys spiral concentration of the flotation tailing does not recover enough zinc to be economically attractive; and crushing and wet grinding of ferrosilicon for heavy medium are commercially feasible. The Eagle-Picher Co. operates extensive mines in the Tri-State area of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The ore is milled at its Central hill, which also accepts custom ores. During the recent war the mill handled about 12,-000 tong- of low-grade ore per day. The company milled about 50 percent of the district tonnage and purchased nearly 90 percent of the custom ore. About 50 percent of the mill feed was from company mines. Zinc is the chief value in the Tri-State ores,-with Varying quantities of lead and cadmium minerals, as well as small amounts of germanium and gallium.

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. Them 7 symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized Lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the. Truax-Traer Goal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydro-electric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Chino mines at Santa Rita, Grant County, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Chino mine's, operates an open-cut copper mine at Santa Rita, Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex. This mine is located about 16 miles east and slightly north of Silver City, the county seat. The ore is-transported in standard railroad cars by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., approximately 10 miles to Hurley where it is milled. The concentrated are shipped approximately l'70 miles over the same railroad to the smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., at El Paso, Tex. (fig. 1)

The recent evolution of the piling market clearly shows a growing demand for screw piles with soil displacement. The recently developed Omega Screw pile ful-fill these new expectations, combining the advantages of vibration-free systems and the behaviour of a displacement pile. The paper describes recent experience and new applications with this very promissing pile. Full-scale load tests were carried out in different countries as U.K. or Sweden. A very attractive and innovative piled embankment is also described, using geogrids in order to transfer the loads from the superstructure to non-reinforced Omega-piles.

The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Mid continent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also. The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County, Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that could not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 1.36 million barrels of water had been injected.

The process development described in this report was carried out at the Morgantown Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with West Virginia University. An experimental laboratory-scale pilot unit to gasify coal dust in entrainment was constructed on the Campus of the University in Morgantown. The enormously accelerated demand for liquid and gaseous fuels and utilization of our immense coal resources require that a low-cost process be developed for the gasification of a wide variety of coals. Such a process would be a major factor in lowering the cost of synthetic liquid fuels. None of the proc3sses developed in Germany prior to and during World War II, such as the Winkler process, the H. Koppers dust gasification process, the Wintershall-Schmalfoldt process, etc., meet all the requirements for a low-cost process under American conditions. Nor has any other process designed and experimentally operated at atmospheric pressure during the post-war period in this country appeared to fulfill all of the necessary conditions for a low-cost process.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. Land disturbed by surface mining in Colorado and other western states has increased substantially over the past several years and is likely to increase even more in the future. This study was initiated to provide basic information on hydrologic and erosional characteristics of regraded coal spoils in Colorado as an aid for planning future reclamation activities. Eleven of twenty-one surface mines licensed in Colorado were sampled during the summer of 1980 and 1981. Mines not sampled included mines which had not progressed to the point that reclamation had begun, and mines where operators denied permission to sample. All coal regions were sampled with the exception of the San Juan Coal Field. Physical and hydrologic characteristics of regraded coal spoils in Colorado were determined using standard field and laboratory procedures. Field sampling included characterization of sites (slope, vegetation density, proportion of surface rock, bare soil, etc.) and infiltration measurements using a l-meter square drop former raining on a 1/2 square meter rectangular plot frame. Core samples collected in the field were analyzed for saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, organic matter, moisture retention and texture. The erosion potential of each site was determined using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Results of the sampling indicate that infiltration rates vary widely both within and between sites. However, definite trends with respect to coal fields are apparent. For example, the Green River (Yampa) coal region had a wide range of sampled infiltration rates (1.2 to 5.1 cm/hr). However, most of the sites clustered towards the low end of the range. The North Park (Marr Strip) also was rated at the low end of the infiltration range (2.0 to 3.0 cm/hr). Average infiltration rates for the Canon City and Uinta Coal Regions were at the high end of the range (4.9 to 5.5 cm/hr). Multiple correlation analysis of infiltration rates vs. site characteristics showed that infiltration rates were most closely correlated with the depth of wetting, the amount of mulch cover, and site slope. The depth of wetting was highly correlated with the depth of the topsoil and the bulk density of the spoil. In general, the topsoil at all sites appeared to be highly permeable to water intake but once saturated, subsequent infiltration depended upon characteristics of the underlying spoil. Vegetation cover affected infiltration on individual mine sites but was not as pronounced as topsoil characteristics or mulch. Erodibility of topsoil and spoils, as determined by Wischmeier's "K" factor, ranged from 1.34 to 0.56 tonnes/ha. (topsoil) and 1.25 to 0.66 tonnes/ha. (spoils). Definite trends in erodibility are evident. The Green River (Yampa) Coal Region displayed consistently higher erodibilities (1.34 to 0.75 tonnes/ha.) than other coal fields (0.72 to 0.56 tonnes/ha). Lowest erodibilities were observed in the Uinta, North Park, and Raton Mesa Coal Regions (0.56 to 0.62 tonnes/ha). Erodibilities of underlying spoils showed similar trends as the topsoils. Erosion potential (the product of soil erodibility and rainfall erosivity) was detennined using calculated ?K? factors and rainfall erosivities (R) taken from Clyde (1976). Results show that the Delagua coal field, Raton Mesa Coal Region had the greatest erosion potential due to the high rainfall energies in the region, while the North Park and Uinta Coal Regions had the lowest potential erosion.

The request for proposal from the U.S. Bureau of Mines outlined the purpose of this study in the following terms. "High grade near surface deposits are largely a matter of history. Most of the current mineral production in the united States is from large low grade ore deposits mined by large scale methods. It appears likely that exhaustion of near surface deposits and public resistance to open pit mining will tend to reverse the present trend toward open pit mining and lead to increased reliance on large scale underground mining. In view of the long lead time needed to improve basic technology, an in-depth study of the major underground mining methods is needed. "This study is intended to provide a systematic review and analysis of large scale non-coal underground mining technology with particular emphasis on current practices and problems, needed technological improvements, existing or potential environmental conflicts, and possible modifications or innovations that will assist in the satisfaction of projected national mineral supply requirements."

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the technical and economic constraints on the extraction and utilization of anthracite coal and to determine the research and development needed in order to make anthracite coal more fully utilized as a premium energy resource. In the report the contractor examines in detail the anthracite industry both past and present and evaluates market possibilities. Anthracite reserves and resources are analyzed and tabulated, and the problem of pumping and drainage from the flooded anthracite fields is covered. Current technology is considered in detail with a discussion of production techniques with potential for improvement. The contractor concludes the report with a summary of constraints on the anthracite industry and the contractor's recommendations for effecting a revitalization of that industry. An estimated production of 17 million tons annually by 1990 can be anticipated if adequate planning, research, and development to overcome present constraints are initiated in the near future.

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."
