With growing populations, infrastructure projects are utilizing underground space to expand transportation networks, water supply and sewer disposal systems and hydropower facilities. These new projects require large diameter tunnels to meet the growing demands. As the tunnel diameter increases, not all rock mass properties are scalable and precedent experience becomes less reliable. One such non-scaleable property is lamination thickness. Numerical modelling was conducted to determine the influence of lamination thicknesses on a 16 m diameter tunnel. Five different areas of excavation response were found to exist for laminations ranging between 0.16 to 16 metres in thickness. For this tunnel diameter, critical lamination thicknesses of 6 metre and 1 metre were found to exist. Above 6 metres the excavation response was similar to isotropic models. Below 6 metres the stresses and yield are channeled by the lamination boundaries, increasing plastic deformation. Below 1m multiple lamination units become unstable and the displacements increase significantly and the shape and extent of the yield zone size changes dramatically. The yield zone is controlled by bed deflections and bed parallel shear. As the lamination thickness decreases tensile failure first begins in the haunch area and progressively extends above the crown until a self-limiting plastic yield zone shape is reach at lamination thicknesses below 0.4 metres. Conclusions drawn from observations at the Niagara Tunnel Project are those of the authors.

Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

Powder and spherical pellets of MoO2 were oxidised under controlled conditions in the temperature range 674-791 K at oxygen partial pressures of 8.1-30.4 kPa. Weight increase during the reaction was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. It was concluded that the reaction is 0.6th order with respect to oxygen concentation and that the activation energy is 148 kJ/mole. In experiments conducted with powder, fast transfer of reaction heat to the gas phase created isothermal conditions, but the temperature of pellets rose by a maximum of 54 K at 674 K and 105 K at 791 K. The rise in temperature caused structural changes such as sintering and crack formation, which had a considerable effect on the reaction rate. The research described in this Bureau of Minus report was conducted to improve the chromium-iron ratio of offgrade chromite. Two methods were used: (1) Iron was selectively reduced from chromite by carbothermic reduction in an electric-arc furnace, and (2) a mixture of carbon, chromite, and sometimes fluorspar was chlorinated to remove a substantial part of the iron. Chromite concentrate from the Mouat deposit in Montana and from northern California was used in the test work. Chromium-bearing slag and chromite that had been beneficiated by a roast-leach process were each smelted to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Iron was selectively reduced in a laboratory-scale., electric-arc furnace. Carbon additions to the smelting charges varied from 40 to 100 percent of the stoichiometric requirement, and slag basicities were varied from 0.4 to 1.0 chromium-iron ratios of more than 4:1 were obtained with 89 percent recovery of chromium in a chromium-bearing slag.

The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. A methodology for building pragmatic physics-based models is here adapted to predict the erosion of ladle linings in the steel industry, in order to support operators when deciding whether the lining can be used safely for another heat. A defective lining may allow 140 t of molten steel to spill, with disastrous consequences for workers and plant. The adopted work flow for the development, challenges faced, and some model results are presented. One key learning outcome is that model development should allow time for maturing the process understanding, as well as for many iterations by ‘questions-responses and actions’ at various stages in the model development. Good interaction between the development team and industry case owner is an important success factor. Combining or extending the model with the use of machine learning and cognition-related methods, such as knowledge graphs and self-adaptive algorithms, is discussed.

"The mode of ore occurrence and the methods and costs of mining at one of the zinc-lead mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead district, Oklahoma, are presented in this paper for the information of mine operators in other districts.No. 2 mine property was acquired by lease in 1918 after some 30 holes had been drilled and a shaft had been sunk to the 305-foot level by the first lessees. After acquisition of the lease, the present operating company drilled a rich ore body on the 260-foot level and in 1920 started sinking two shafts. Production was begun late in 1921, and the mine has been operated more or less continuously to the present time.The mill has a capacity of 400 tons in 10 hours, the usual length of the mill shift in the district.The geology of Mine No. 2 is very similar to that of Mine No. 13 except that the Cherokee shale is thicker, ranging from 80 to 160 feet, and all the formations are correspondingly deeper, the Short Creek oolite horizon here being at a depth of about 300 feet. The oolite has not been found on this property, but the lime comes in at about the level at which the oolite should appear.The ore deposits of Mine No. 2 occur in the brecciated and bowlder ground above the Short Creek oolite. The main or 260-foot level is about 40 feet above the oolite horizon, and the lower or 300-foot level is immediately above it.The ore deposition is controlled by a zone of shearing and fracturing, and the mineable areas are divided into two distinct runs which have a northwest trend with a lean or practically barren area dividing them. This characteristic has controlled the mining to a large extent, for it enables the mine superintendent to locate the large pillars in lean ore and leave only small pillars in the richer ore. Figure 1 shows the outlines of the ore body and the pillars.The ore on the main level occurs disseminated throughout the jasperoid breccia as patches or lenses in the jasperoid, or cementing massive bowlders of jasperoid breccia and chert. The ore of the lower level is more of the bowlder type than that on the main level and occurs chiefly cementing the bowlders but also with some disseminated ore in the jasperoid breccia.The gangue minerals are jasperoid breccia, chert, and dolomite. Calcite is found in minor quantities. Sphalerite is the principal ore mineral; galena is found only in minor quantities around the edges of the ore body. When galena is encountered in this ore body, the limit of the ore can be expected.The exploration and estimation of ore reserves at Mine No. 2 are similar in many respects to the methods used at Mine No. 1.4After the mine was opened up and the general character of the ore deposit had been determined, drilling operations were concentrated along the trend of the shear zone. Later drilling has proved what appears to be a parallel shear zone or an offset of the zone now being mined."

Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s two-mile-long particle accelerator generates the world’s brightest X-rays from its Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) freeelectron laser. This facility has driven groundbreaking discoveries in medicine and industry. The LCLS-II-HE project will provide a significant increase in laser energy, allowing cutting-edge research in fields including biology and environmental science. A key project component is the Low Emittance Injector Tunnel (LEIT), a 240-foot-long tunnel to be built alongside the existing accelerator and connected to it via a 30-footlong Transfer Tunnel. This paper discusses site and scientific constraints that led to the selection of the LEIT configuration: tunnels to be constructed using the sequential excavation method in mixed-face conditions comprising native rock and placed backfill, and critical design considerations including protection of overlying and adjacent historic structures and structural accommodation of near-fault seismic loading.

The paper describes the adopted technologies and performance controls related to a special geotechnical engineering solution provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme is the one applied to the new quay of Salipazari, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combi-wall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high profile Project. The results of the in-situ and laboratory tests carried out on the improved soil are also presented. Main discussed points are: • History of Galataport and main Project details. • Design principle and soil condition for the new quay of Salipazari. • Difficulties encountered during execution of DSM. • Preliminary field trial tests conducted to establish the operational parameters, with relevant in-situ and laboratory tests executed. • Preliminary tests on material used for DSM (seawater and CEM IV SR). • Electronic equipment mounted on the rig, which allows the automatic execution of DSM columns. • Final QA/QC tests conducted to verify the performance of DSM, mainly consisting in: coring with relevant laboratory tests on samples (UCS + Es), seismic refraction tomography and seismic cross hole tomography. Correlations between UCS and Es, and between Es and Edyn are also presented. • A cross section of the executed treatment could be inspected on site during excavation. The following paper discusses the mining, transportation, and crushing methods, with costs, at the San Andreas plant of the Calaveras Cement Co. It is one of a series, prepared for and published by the U. S. Bureau of Mine describing methods used in cement-rock quarries throughout the country. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total cost. It is recognized that publication of total costs mightin some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a hole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost-tabulations shall ensue.

ABSTRACT Electricity production by the Electricity Supply Commission of South Africa (Eskom) is the most important beneficiation process for South African coal. As one of the world’s lowest cost producers, energy-intensive industries such as ferroalloys and aluminium were introduced. However the poor were neglected. The white paper on energy policy (Department of Minerals and Energy, 1998) sought to redress this. Also, chasing economic growth to generate jobs resulted in high electricity demand and interruptions. Lifespan estimates of South African coal reserves based upon peak theory vary widely. Approaching peak, coal production in the future will be more expensive and, thus, contribute to more expensive electricity, which could inhibit industrial development unless South Africans work smarter.

The Bureau of Mines made laboratory investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing fine tungsten wires to reinforce a number of nonferrous metals and alloys and a superalloy, S-8l6. The composites of tungsten filament and metals were chosen to attain elevated temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Oriented clean or precoated tungsten wires were incorporated with the other metals by extrusion, swaging, and infiltration casting. Although widely varying characteristics were found in the composites, none were considered satisfactory for high-temperature use, chiefly because of reactions between the matrix metal-tungsten surface. Diffusion, solution, and chemical reactions between matrix and tungsten wires were sufficiently slow for some combinations, such as 15 v/o 8-816, to exhibit increased high-temperature strength for a limited time. A few metals failed to wet or bond to the tungsten surfaces, while a few responded after precoating with a third metal.

Nine rock properties were determined for rocks coming from 49 locations and having a wide range of compressive strengths. Plots of the nine rock properties versus each other were prepared. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to obtain several equations for predicting compressive strength. Both linear and curvilinear relationships were assumed between compressive strength and the other rock properties. The prediction equations had multiple correlation coefficients ranging from 0.947 for an equation with 1 variable (point load tensile strength) to 0.986 for an equation with 25 variables. Of the properties tested only point load tensile strength could be used alone to estimate compressive strength with fair accuracy.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor&apos;s employees. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. The initial design was based on four individual gas analysers along with a series of solenoid valves, gas sample conditioning and flow control mechanisms to ensure the correct gas flow stream volume to the analyser. Simtars staff have identified flow control issues when providing operational support to coalmines on numerous occasions. The accuracy of the oxygen analysis is dependent on control of the gas flow to the analyser. Oxygen is one of the parameters used in calculating Graham’s ratio which is used for the detection of spontaneous combustion activity in coalmines. This paper will provide data which identifies the flow control issues by comparing mine site records for the two surface sample lines in the analyser room and the gas cage. Mine sites will be deidentified within the paper. The paper will discuss some of the changes that have been made in modern tube bundle systems and compare the change to the initial design specification developed by the UK National Coal Board, investigate possible operational impacts and provide a technical fix to solve the current flow issues being experienced at some mines.
