"The mechanism of vanadium(V) V ) toxicity is still not fully understood in spite of extensive current effort (1-3). The presence of a vanadium(V) V ) -dependent NAD ( P )H oxidase in cell membranes suggests that at least one of the pathways involves oxidation of NAD(P)H (1-3). Considerable effort has therefore been devoted to finding the mechanism of NAD ( P ) H-oxidation by va¬nadium( V ) (1-19). Recently Liochev and Fridovich (4, 16) provided a critical review of vanadium( V) -stimulated NAD (P )H oxidation by plasma membranes. They out¬lined a mechanism in which vanadium(V) V )-stimulated oxidation of NAD ( P )H by biomembranes involves an O2 - initiated free radical chain reaction (4 ). While the above may be the major pathway for the vanadium-me¬diated NAD (P )H oxidation in membrane-related sys¬tems, some recent results suggest that in the presence of NADPH the flavoenzyme glutathione reductase can function as a vanadium(V) V ) reductase (18). Because of the significance of this result in relationship to the mech¬anism of vanadium( V) metabolism and the novelty of the metal-reductase behavior of a flavoenzyme, we have car¬ried out additional studies on one-electron reduction of vanadium( V) by two other, related flavoenzymes: lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADPH oxidoreductase. These two enzymes were selected because they are known to catalyze a one-electron reduction of Cr ( VI ) (19-21 ), which is isoelectronic with vanadium( V ).The present study also reports on the generation of hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals in the vanadium( V) -flavoen-zyme redox system without exogenous H2O2. The • OH study was undertaken because • OH radicals are known to be generated in reactions of vanadium( IV) with H2O2 (17,18,22-27). For example, Piette and co-workers (17, 22) have studied effects of vanadium(IV) IV ) on lipid per-oxidation and NADPH oxidation and suggested that va-nadium( IV) -induced • OH radical formation may play an important role in vanadium( V) toxicity. Carmichael (25, 26) investigated the reaction between a RNA /VO 2' complex and H2O2 with a view to probe the possible re-lationship between vanadium( IV) -mediated • OH radical generation and DNA damage. He has suggested that in this reaction the • OH radical adds to the C (5) carbon of uracil, causing nucleotide damage, similar to what occurs in the nucleotide /Fe2+ / H2O2 reaction (28) and in y-irradiated aqueous solutions of nucleic acids (29 ). To our knowledge, however, there is as yet no report on ·OH radical generation in any reaction involving the reduction of vanadium ( V) by a well-characterized enzyme, without exogenous H20 2 • The present study provides evidence that ·OH radicals can form in a flavoenzyme-mediated reduction of vanadium( V) to vanadium( IV) and that this process involves also the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The H20 2 thus generated reacts with vanadium( IV) to produce ·OH radical, in analogy with the Fenton reaction ( Fe2 + + H20 2 - Fe3 + + OH- + ·OH)."

Introduction When one thinks of a coal stripping deposit, the picture that usually comes to mind is that of a more or less flat seam from two to twenty feet in thickness overlain by ten to fifty feet of overburden, in suitable ratio for economic operation. This is the usual type of stripping deposit and is quite a common occurrence in various parts of the prairie provinces. Rather unusual types of coal stripping deposits are being presently worked as open-cut mines by Sterling Collieries, Limited, and the Co al Valley Mining Company, Limited, at Miles 47 and 48 on the Alberta Coal Branch, some 150 miles south west of Edmonton. These deposits are of interest chiefly because they represent turned-up and greatly thickened sections of the Mynheer seam, and as such they present their own problems, peculiar to the commercial exploitation of a seam of this type. The area in which these deposits occur was originally owned by the Pacific Pass Collieries, whose operations, however, were confined to under-ground mining at Lovett, some eight miles to the southeast. It was not until l918 that the value of these deposits was realized, when the Company now known as Sterling Collieries, Limited, opened their pit at Mile 47. At the inception of the work, coal was loaded directly into the railway cars by men using wheelbarrows. In 1920, a tipple was built, after which the coal was loaded by steam shovel into mine cars, hauled by steam dinkeys, and loaded over the tipple into railway cars. In 1922, the Coal Valley Mining Company entered the field at Mile 48, with an entirely mechanical equipment, and at the present rime these two are the only stripping properties in Alberta using mechanical equipment both for the removal of overburden and the loading of the coal. These Companies have operated continuously since that time, and have to date mined and shipped 4,000,000 tons of coal, and moved some 5,255,000 cubic yards of stripping. The present annual coal output for the two mines is about 240,000 tons.

T HE engineer of today is by his training, by his traditions, and by the service which he must render, irrevocably committed to taking his part in public life along with the members of the older professions of ministry, medicine and law. Nevertheless, in comparison with these: three, so long recognized as the "learned professions-all three of which grew out of the functions of the priesthood-engineering in any modern sense of the word is a youthful profession indeed. So youthful is engineering in its present significance, that it may be said to date from the labors of John Smeaton, the lighthouse builder; of Simon Newcomen and James Watt, the inventors of the steam engine; and of George Stephenson, the inventor of the locomotive; at the dawn of the 19th century. Great works of an engineering character had, it is true, been executed long before this, but practically all of them had been rule-of-thumb enterprises, dependent upon a plethora of slave labor for their accomplishment. For illustration it is said that at Rio Tinto in the days of Hiram, king of Tyre, 40,000 men worked for a year to produce three tons of silver from the rich outcrop ore. Such an operation can scarcely be called an engineering enterprise, however, when we remember that a fourth of this number of men in these same mines, from which the richest ore was long ago extracted, produce at present over 100 tons of copper per day.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-west of Adelaide in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a design capacity of 8 Mtpa. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell preceding the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit.Since its commissioning, the Prominent Hill flotation circuit has been the focus of a series of projects aimed at continual performance improvement. This has been achieved by a systematic approach of project identification, evaluation and implementation which has led to a progressive improvement in flotation performance. Innovations that have been successfully implemented include aspects of cell design and operation, and reagent suite optimisation.Improvements to the mechanical cells initially focused on the installation of a modified rotor-stator design in the rougher circuit, as recommended by Outotec. Isolated cells were fitted with this technology and proven to provide a benefit for copper recovery before the design was trialled in subsequent cells along the bank. Based on this success, further modifications were made to other aspects of the rougher and cleaner cells.Laboratory trials conducted at Prominent Hill involve a screening process identifying potential reagents from a list of products, which are then rigorously tested in the laboratory before one is selected for trial in the concentrator. Where these reagents have demonstrated a statistical improvement in performance they have typically been incorporated permanently into the flotation circuit. This paper discusses the process of continual improvement at the Prominent Hill flotation circuit and the optimisation achieved by the implementation of key initiatives.CITATION:Woodward, P, Muhamad, N and Ly, T, 2013. The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

The design and construction of foundations in the New York City area are usually dictated by the widely varying geologic conditions encountered in the five boroughs, particularly along the spine of Manhattan Island. Rock extends well above sea level at the northern reaches and falls to depths in excess of 250 m at the barrier islands at the southern extremities. These highly variable geologic conditions, significantly affected by glacial activity, dictate different design and construction approaches throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Extensive rock removal is required at the north while long piling is dictated in the south. Similar changes can occur within a project site on Manhattan Island. This paper will describe these conditions in general, will identify the various solutions used to solve these problems and will summarize various foundation types used in the New York City area.

After the discovery of the rare-earth mineral deposit in the Clark Mountain area near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif., two samples wore obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines for investigation of possible method of concentration. Three other samples were received later from different locations in the same area. The rare-earth mineral in this ore had been identified by E. T. Schonk as bastnaesite, a fluocarbonate of the rare-earth metals containing cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, thorium, uranium, etc. Associated with the bastnaesite were barite, silica, and some calcite. The bastnaesite contained a small amount of iron as a coloration and some manganese. Twenty to fifty percent of the weight of the samples studied was bastnaesite, or ten to twenty-five percent total rare-earth oxides; about half was cerium oxide. Apparently, none of this mineral occurred in pure form. Even the highest-grade particles 'wore contaminated by fine, interlocked grains of barite, calcite, and silica; barite contamination predominated, and the barite was interlocked with varying amounts of bastnaesite. While the specific gravities of pure bastnaesite and barite (approximately 5.0 and 4.50 respectively) differ enough to allow separation by gravity, the interlocking of the minerals nullified this difference. Consequently, only a partial separation could be made by gravity concentration. The extremely fine grained texture of most of the ore prevented grinding to a size that would make concentration by flotation practicable; a partial separation of barite by this means was effected.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. In this study, the method of chemical co-precipitation?reduction?diffusion was developed for the preparation of magnetic SmCo5 alloy. In the chemical co-precipitation process, the effects of solution pH, the reactant concentration, the dispersant on the process were investigated. The optimum conditions of the process were determined, and the SmCo5 alloy oxide precursor particles with fine crystalline structure, narrow size distribution was obtained. Then, by reduction-diffusion treatment of the precursor particles, the SmCo5 alloy with high quality was produced. It is anticipated that the co-precipitation-reduction-diffusion is a novel method available for SmCo5 alloy production.

O procedimento específico mais utilizado é o Blowdown, com o abaixamento de carga até nível de ventaneiras, facilitando posterior limpeza e reparo. Para sucesso deste procedimento, é essencial um planejamento adequado das atividades. Informações técnicas e experiências operacionais permitiram o embasamento teórico e a execução do Blowdown do Alto Forno 03 da ArcelorMittal FCSA (Tubarão). Como preparação, foi efetuado o aumento do fluxo periférico (remoção de cascão) e o aumento da permeabilidade do Cadinho (maior circulação de líquidos, limpeza e drenagem). Realizou-se também a preparação de equipamentos específicos e controle dos parâmetros operacionais. O abaixamento de carga foi devidamente realizado conforme planejado, até o nível de ventaneiras e permitindo paredes internas livres de cascões.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. Under this program two tape recording and triggering systems were developed and delivered for use in the Bureau of Mines microseismic program. The systems are designed to improve the effectiveness of the Bureau owned Sangamo 3500 series and SABRE VI instrumentation tape recorders. The system is designed to capture random microseismic data, digitize and temporarily store these data, start the tape recorder; and then transfer the data to magnetic tape for permanent storage. The system is designed to pack data on tape such that the tape may be simply played back through galvo drivers onto an oscillograph such that a continuous series of analog records, with corresponding time of day information, are reproduced without excessive oscillograph paper waste or the need for the operator to search for valid events.

INTRODUCTION The classification system for German coal mining is the result of approximately 100 years of experience in roadway development and longwall mining. It is also based on different research projects covered by national and European research programs. Over the past 30 years, more then 600,000 m of road-ways have been driven and employed for mining activities. To properly describe the German rock mass classification system, therefore, it is useful to take a look at the main geomechanical preferences and common support systems. The decision about the most effective development technique and support system is based on a synthesis of rock mass classification and geomechanical analysis. The properties of surrounding rock, the in situ stress, and the influence of mining activities in several seams at each German mine must be considered for the evaluation of the expected deformation of the roadway. The mine layout, the requirements of ventilation and fire prevention, as well as the need to maintain emergency escape routes for the miners, require that the gate roads remain usable after the passage of the longwall face in most cases. Moreover, the gate roads must be maintained despite the high stresses that are applied during longwall retreat mining. Therefore, gate road design must address a broad spectrum of potential deformation environments. In the past, when gate roads were supported solely with yielding steel arches, lithologic descriptions of the surrounding strata conditions were adequate for the dimensioning of support and the prediction of the roadway deformation. The current conditions of multiple-seam mining at depths of up to 1,700 m require combined support systems, including pattern bolting and backfilled steel arches. Rock bolt support is used for development, after which (typically 50–100 m outby the face) the steel arches are installed and backfilled with building material (concrete) in order to achieve an optimized development rate. The rock mass classification system described below was developed especially for the conditions of German hard-coal mining. It includes the stress distribution caused by multiseam workings (including crossing goaf edges of former longwalls), as well as in situ stresses due to greatdepth and the presence of tectonic faults. It is based on the evaluation of four parameters: • Geotechnical analysis of drill cores • Geotechnical observation of the development face • Geotechnical classification of tectonic structures (faults) • Standard classification derived from geotechnical assessment and evaluation of stress conditions (using numerical modeling for stress calculation) ROCK STRENGTH One of the most important input parameters for describing strata conditions is the strength of the rock. The German classification system is based on a description of lithotypes. This method has been used successfully since the 1950s and is based mainly on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the material. An evaluation of the rock strength observed in a survey of approximately 82,500 samples of rock core yielded the results shown in Figure 1. The three most common coal measure rock types are mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone. Each shows a specific mean UCS level and a different spread between the minimum and maximum values. Sandstones, in particular, have a wide spectrum of compressive strength, ranging from approximately 40 MPa to greater than 130 MPa, with an average of 85 MPa. Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."
