Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. This study suggests that to improve copper and gold flotation from clay ores, clay dispersion in conjunction with the minimisation of iron contamination may be required.CITATION:Wei, R, Peng, Y and Seaman, D, 2013. In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (1) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is greater the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this difference in depth of deoxidation is that, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much mire rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900° C.; that is, deoxidation is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide present in the copper. IN 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. This report describes a weighted method for evaluating the mean and variance of assay data from samples of different length . The method , which produces unbiased estimates from which valid confidence limits can be computed , is appropriate for bedded deposits of variable bed thickness and for vein deposits of variable vein width . Assay data from the bedded Florida phosphate deposit is used to illustrate the procedure .

The 3RPORT Project, includes a 5-mile tunnel excavated by a 19-foot diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine below the city of Fort Wayne, IN. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) indicated vuggy to massive argillaceous dolomite within the tunnel alignment. During excavation of the first reach, the TBM encountered zones of cohesive clay and sandstone presented in full face and mixed face conditions. The occurrence of Sandstone was not a “Baselined Condition” described in the GBR for this reach of the alignment. This paper will discuss the methodology to investigate, mitigate and evaluate the DSC impacts on TBM performance.

A number of countries have introduced codes governing the valuation of mineral assets and securities. The African continent will follow suit in due course considering the importance of the global minerals industry as it relates to the attraction of foreign investment. South Africa is to introduce the Petroleum and Minerals Development Bill legislating the involvement of previously disadvantaged individuals and communities in the country?s minerals industry. One of the challenges facing the successful implementation of such codes and bills lies with the abilities of independent valuators to value mineral properties and projects on a consistent basis. Certain valuation principles and methodologies are applicable in all jurisdictions in the minerals industry. These valuation tools and principles are considered and developed in this report. They have been discussed and developed to encourage minerals valuators to consider and consistently apply the most applicable valuation methodologies.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 271 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1982. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-six publications have presented the results of 13,051 gas analyses vide prior to 1982. The first 3 bulletins (1-3)3 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26) containing 7,833 analyses of samples collected since 1960.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. The iron ores of the Kiruna mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality except for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998, LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) analyzers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground, the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. All methods of deep foundation construction present challenges to the contractor and engineer that vary according to the method employed, and the geotechnical conditions in which it is being used. Augered-Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles are generally regarded as one of the most challenging, because the construction method precludes the use of traditional shaft inspection and quality control techniques. Application of Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods can provide quality control for ACIP shafts that traditional methods cannot, but each NDT method has limitations. These make some NDT methods unsuitable for use on ACIP shafts, and may limit the effectiveness of others, depending on geotechnical conditions. To help contractors and engineers working with ACIP piles select the test method most appropriate to specific site conditions, this paper presents a summary of the major NDT methods currently available, and reviews their capabilities with respect to the unique conditions presented by ACIP pile construction. Case histories illustrate how a combination of careful method selection, skilled data interpretation, and experienced engineering judgment have resolved problems and ensured quality in foundation construction by discriminating between potentially serious defects, and those that are unlikely to be significant.

To supply iron units and flux burden in blast furnaces, sinter basicity is one of the vital parameters for sinter plants. The sinter basicity also plays an important role in sinter quality since it imparts the formation of different mineral phases in sinter. Pot-grate sintering tests were carried out with low and high basicity to investigate the effects of sinter basicity on sinter mineralogy, properties and productivity. It was found that with an increase in sinter basicity, both sinter productivity and reducibility (RI) increased. Tumbler index (TI) and low temperature degradation index (LTD) of high basicity sinter were comparable to low basicity sinter. Softening and melting tests showed that sinter with 3.5 C/S basicity had slightly higher softening temperature comparing to lower basicity sinter with C/S 2.6, acid and fluxed pellets. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of silico-ferrite of calcium and alumina (SFCA) and calcium ferrite (CF) in the tested sinter samples.

This paper presents the results of lateral load tests on 0.61-m to 1.27-m (24 to 50-inch) diameter drilled and cast-in-place piers in San Diego area residual/formational soils. The test piers were installed and tested in the following soils: Decomposed Granitic Rock (Ktd), Stadium Conglomerate (Tst), and Friars Formation (Tf). Lateral loads of up to 845 KN (190 kip) were applied to the piers in residual granitic soils, and loads up to 1780 KN (400 kip) were applied to the piers in Stadium Conglomerate and Friars Formation. The tests were conducted by jacking against adjacent piers and monitoring the lateral load and lateral deflection at the ground line. Test results indicate that ultimate lateral pile capacities of up to 1800 KN (400 kip) can be obtained for 0.61 m (24-inch) drilled piers with penetration of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in the residual/formational soils tested. Lateral load analyses using p-y curves for very dense sand significantly overestimate the observed lateral deflections. For lateral load analyses using dense sand p-y curves, p-multipliers that increase the lateral soil stiffness (p-y curves) by 2 to 8 times are required to match the load-deflection behavior measured in the test piles. When applied to the dense sand p-y curves, the p-multipliers provide a more accurate prediction of load-deflection behavior in the residual/formational soils, and can result in shorter required pier penetration and significant savings in foundation cost.

"Minera Penmont, at La Herradura, is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V., and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with two-stage crushing and heap leaching facility, the gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130,000 gold ounces per year, and treatment capacity is 22,000 tonnes/day. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to the coarse visible gold, in some coarser particles ranging from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols where established during exploration and prior to starting up operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. But, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block made of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to starting up operations (“existing”) and the new protocol (“leaching”). In the “existing” protocol, subsampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying is used to estimate the gold content, on a 50 g sample. In the “leaching” protocol a 12,000 g sample was bottle rolled cyanide leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this “rotary sampling” protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the “leaching” protocol.Test results were compared in three groups < 0.30 g/t (below cut-off), 0.30 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall. Results show that the protocol established prior to starting up operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

Uma ferramenta de trefilação deve suportar as altas tensões a que fica submetida durante o processo sem apresentar deformações. Para isso, o projeto da fieira deve iniciar com a escolha correta do material de fabricação e um dimensionamento adequado. Tais fatores podem minimizar a ocorrência de falhas, tanto na fieira, quanto no produto trefilado, assim como diminuir as tensões e desgaste na ferramenta. Portanto, este estudo visa analisar as regiões de uma ferramenta de trefilação industrial que estão sujeitas as maiores amplitudes de tensões ao longo de um processo de trefilação. O método de elementos finitos foi utilizado para simular a trefilação de uma barra de aço utilizando uma ferramenta de carbeto de tungstênio. O perfil da fieira foi inserido no software e então analisado em diferentes etapas ao longo do processo de trefilação e após o seu término. Observou-se a ocorrência de tensões compressivas superiores a 600 MPa na região de trabalho e as maiores tensões trativas foram visualizadas na região de saída, com valores próximos a 200 MPa. A presença de tensões residuais não foi registrada na fieira, como esperado.

To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These tests are described in Schedule 1-G4/ (explosives) and Schedule 26A5/ (blasting devices). An explosive or blasting device that passes the appropriate tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is subject to continuous revision, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines to publish periodically the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. The present circular gives all explosives and blasting devices on the active permissible list as of December 31, 1957, and shows all changes, additions, and transfers in that list between December 31, 1951,6/ and December 31, 1957.
