A number of chemical techniques have been applied to manganese ores from three areas of Aroostook County, Maine. Although large tonnages of these ores have been proved, they are low grade, and their exploitation has awaited a suitable beneficiation scheme. As conventional ore-dressing methods had failed to yield satisfactory results, attention was turned to chemical procedures. Leaching with dilute (7-percent) H2S04 extracted over 90 percent of the manganese from ore of the Dudley farm area, consuming 3.8 pounds of acid per pound of manganese extracted. Ores from the Littleton Ridge and Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain areas were less amenable to this treatment, yielding approximately 80 and 60 percent of their Mn content, respectively. To increase the percentage extraction of manganese in the latter two ores, a number of factors were varied, including (1) acid concentration in the extracting solution, (2) ratio of acid to Mn in the slurry, and (3) preliminary heat treatment of the ore with a reducing agent. Other acids, including HNO3, HC1, and H2SO3, were tried also; however, no significant improvements in the Mn leached from Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain ore were made. The manganese extraction of Littleton Ridge ore was raised to 90 percent by providing 9 to 11 pounds of HNO3 per pound of Mn in the ore.

Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

As is readily apparent, the reliability of the early-stage costs estimated for any mining project are critical to the viability of that project. An estimate too high might leave a potentially profitable deposit undeveloped or worse yet, available to a competitor. One too low might waste investment dollars in a project not yet economically ripe. There are two aspects critical to any estimate: 1. The cost data used to represent the values of the wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment. 2. The design used to determine the engineering parameters upon which the above estimated values are based. Given that all of the information contained in Mining Cost Service is provided by suppliers, equipment manufacturers and mine operators, one wonders why there is any question as to the reliability of cost estimates developed using this information. Given that it is all actual (as opposed to statistically derived) data, where do the problems with estimate reliability lie and what is the impact of the data on that reliability? The following presents a series of analyses designed to assess the reliability of the cost estimating process. Both the actual cost data and the engineering parameters upon which they are based are examined in an attempt to quantify and understand the importance of each. While several sources of cost information are available (Means, Richardson, Primedia?s Equipment Watch, and individual suppliers and manufacturers), the following rely solely on data contained in InfoMine USA, Inc?s, Mining Cost Service and in its Sherpa Mine Cost Estimating Software.

In this paper, Imperial Oil Limited reports briefly on the drilling by contract rigs of twenty-nine slim holes in the Virden, Smiley, and Souris Valley areas. The investigations showed that slim-hole penetration rates, as a result of careful control of drilling variables, can approach those achieved with 7 7/8-inch bits. It is concluded that slim-hole drilling is acceptable for development or exploratory work. Imperial also reports on the completion techniques and equipment that have been developed on twenty-seven tubingless 2 1/2-inch casing completions. Indications are that the method is economically desirable where excessive gas or water production is not anticipated.

THE scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the minerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; and further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by F. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geo-chemistry;1 and in the preparation of this paper I have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moissan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P.. The Grace mine magnetite deposit, located 2 miles north of Morgantown in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was discovered in 1948 by an aerial magnetometer survey. It is situated on the southern border of the Triassic lowlands section of the Piedmont province. Cambrian sandstones, shales, and limestones overlie Precambrian crystalline rock and were folded and thrust-faulted during the late Paleozoic Appalachian revolution. Late Triassic continental sediments were deposited on the deformed basement rocks and were intruded by Late Triassic diabase dikes and sills before regional tilting and normal faulting occurred. The Grace mine magnetite ore is characteristic of the Cornwall type. The ore has replaced a Cambrian limestone lens isolated between Triassic diabase footwall and Triassic sedimentary rock hanging wall. The ore body is roughly tabular in shape, dips 20° to 30°NE and plunges about 20°N80°E. The ore is granular, fine- to medium-grained, typically consisting of unevenly distributed magnetite in a matrix of light green to white serpentine gangue. Magnetite is the major ore mineral, pyrite and chalcopyrite are common accessory minerals, and pyrrhotite occurs locally. Sphalerite, marcasite, galena, hematite, digenite, and goethite are uncommon. Serpentine, talc, and chlorite are the major gangue minerals; calcite and dolomite are common, and phlogopite, tremolite, and biotite are present locally. Apatite is a common accessory; sphene is rare. Calcium-magnesium silicates were formed first by contact metamorphism of impure limestone by the intruding diabase. Later, the silicates were altered hydrothermally to the serpentine- talc-chlorite assemblage now present. Magnetite, the first ore mineral, formed by replacing serpentine and was followed by pyritepyrrhotite and then by chalcopyrite-galenasphalerite. Marcasite, secondary pyrite, goethite, and hematite are secondary minerals resulting from alteration of pyrrhotite and magnetite. It is estimated that confining pressure was about 1500 bars and the temperature range was 500° to 675°C during ore formation.

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. "This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. Recent advances in underground communications technology have demonstrated the feasibility of teleoperation and automation in underground metal mines. One major challenge lies in the automation of underground mobile machines from surface, with the potential to reduce significantly the need for human involvement in underground operations. This paper reviews the evolution of underground metal mining automation, principally related to the development of teleoperation and automation of mobile mining machines. Examples of prototype systems are given and the associated benefits that have been observed are reviewed.

American and European practices in cleaning fine coal are strikingly different. The tables, launders, classifiers, and pneumatic devices used in America are seldom employed in Continental Europe, where much of the fine coal is cleaned in feldspar jigs, often supplemented by froth flotation of the extreme fines. This difference in choice of cleaning equipment may be fortuitous, but in large measure can be attributed to a difference in economic factors. Coal being more costly in Europe, there is greater emphasis on efficient cleaning of all sizes, including the extreme fines, and it is common to produce a high-ash middling for "on-site" consumption to avoid any waste of fuel value. The feldspar jig has been found advantageous under these conditions. In the United States fuel coal must be prepared as cheaply as possible, and metallurgical coal must be prepared as efficiently as possible; thus in both branches of preparation practice, any cleaning device that promises greater economy or higher efficiency warrants consideration. The feldspar jig, as employed in Europe, has a much higher unit capacity than the wet table used so extensively here and therefore offers economy in the capital costs of a washery through saving in space. As pointed out by Vissac,4/ the jig operates under automatic control, and therefore can cope with fluctuations in quality of feed. Maintenance costs for a single, large-capacity unit, such as the feldspar jig, would be expected to be lower than those for a battery of low-capacity cleaners. These considerations led the Bureau of Mines to undertake an investigation of the feldspar jig to determine its possible usefulness in this country.

In 1986 at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 23,225 acres of the 27,980-acre Jordan Craters Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-128) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 20 miles northwest from Jordan Valley. No mining activity has been recorded within the study area, and no metallic or industrial mineral resources were identified. Small isolated occurrences of decorative quality stone were identified. However, none of these occurrences constitute a resource. Although the study area is underlain by relatively young volcanic rocks, the area has no known geothermal energy resource.

The Bureau of Mines, through a cooperative agreement with Duquesne Light Co. of Pennsylvania, field tested a method of using pneumatic stowing of crushed limestone to construct seals in long-abandoned mine openings that were part of an active mine closed shortly before sealing. A total of 13 openings at 11 sites were backfilled. In pneumatic stowing, material is conveyed through a pipeline and into the mine opening under low air pressure. The stowing equipment consists of a power sup-ply, a blower, a feeder to inject material into the pipeline, and a nozzle for directing the placement. Material is ejected from the nozzle at high velocity, creating a high-compaction fill upon impact. The fill material used was well-graded limestone aggregate up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, with sufficient fines. This fill was modified at five locations by the addition of portland cement, expansive cement, and/or bentonite. The pneumatic stowing method is safer and faster than conventional methods, is cost competitive, and eliminates or reduces the exposure of workers to possible hazards since the nozzle can be kept outside the mine opening. The equipment is mobile, but some modifications in the technique would improve performance. The technique was used at remote locations where other methods could not be used without disturbing the environment.

Information on the performance of coal-cleaning equipment is necessary to provide a basis for evaluating the performance of existing plants and projecting that of new plants. Performance data can contribute greatly to the wise selection and effective use of coal-washing equipment. The Bureau of Mines has published information on the performance of several commercial plants, as well as of some laboratory-scale equipment, 5 (2-9, 11, 12, 17-12, 21-25) from time to time for a number of years. A more intensive program to provide such information for all the principal types of cleaning equipment is underway. The present evaluation of table performance is part of this program.

This paper presents observations on the installation of drilled shafts from two construction projects and an academic study with experimental and analytical parts. The construction projects involved the use of pressurized drilling methods. The experimental part of the academic study involved the use of the auger drilling method. The analytical part of the academic study investigated the effect of drilling methods on the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loads. The concept of ?free-length? is introduced for the lateral load design of pressure-drilled shafts that are thought to be fully embedded within a soil media. The academic part of the study presented herein was conducted in Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

The Transformation AGO project, constructed between 2005 and 2008, featured a foundation trade contract that included design of pile caps and grade beams and construction of 138 permanent micropiles. The new foundation works were constructed within seven different settings ? each featuring a host of attributes challenging to constructability ? inside and outside the existing Art Gallery of Ontario, all while the gallery remained open for business. Transformation AGO resulted in several firsts for micropiles in the Toronto construction market: this was the first micropile trade contract with a multimillion dollar contract value; it featured the first static compressive load test performed beyond 7000 kN on a single micropile; the first static compressive load test beyond 8000 kN on an experimental pile cap supported by two test micropiles; and it was the first publicly funded project to go to tender with micropiles listed as the preferred foundation option. This paper outlines the successful application of micropiles at the landmark Transformation AGO project.

An account is given of investigations into the application of two neutron methods to the on-line analysis of slurries. One deals with the application of the neutron moisture gauge principle to the determination of the water content of iron oxide slurries, and the other with the application of gamma radiation from thermal-neutron-capture to the determination of the composition of aqueous slurries of iron oxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide and sulphur. Linear relationships were found between the composition of the slurry and the neutron count-rate in the first study, and between the slurry composition and the prompt-gamma-ray count-rate in the second study. A mathematical relationship has also been developed which relates changes in the prompt-gamma-ray counts from hydrogen to changes in slurry composition.

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

This paper will cover the progress being made on Phase 1 of New York’s Second Avenue Subway line. It will include a description of construction progress on the first contract to be let, which consists of a 248 m (815 ft) long launch box, 3.9 km(2.4 miles) of TBM tunnels and a tunnel sump; the packaging strategy for the remaining work; and the progress through Final Design of the remaining packages, including the two large span rock cavern stations.
