"Slag density is a significant factor in determining the process efficiency of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, where calcium fluoride (CaF2)-based slag is formed synthetically to refine metal ingots. Although there are some former studies investigating the density of CaF2-containing slags, the prediction models focusing on them are applicable only to some specific systems. The present study aims to build a model to predict density for a wide range of CaF2-containing ESR slags. To investigate density for various slag compositions, CaF2-Al2O3-based and CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-based slag compositions were prepared. Additionally, some minor constituents like FeO, MgO and MnO were added to a 5:3:2 CaF2-Al2O3-CaO slag in order to investigate the effects of these constituents on the slag. The volumes of the prepared slags were measured in a tube furnace at 1450-1550 °C using the sessile drop technique, and their densities were calculated. The results showed that for the slags, density is related to optical basicity, and therefore a prediction model based on an Arrhenius equation was built. The model was tested with data from literature, and its limitations and validity are discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a refining method in which a metal ingot is remelted under a synthetic slag. These synthetic ESR slags are mainly composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Other constituents like iron oxide (FeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), manganese oxide (MnO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) are added to this system in relatively low amounts, according to the type of steel ingot to be refined. The prediction of slag properties, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity and density, is crucial for the selection of the synthetic slag in order to obtain the required process parameters, like temperature, the passing time of the molten metal droplet through the slag, and metal-slag separation (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Mattar, El-Faramawy and Fathy, 2002; Mehrabi, Rahimipour and Shokuhfar, 2005; Presoly, Korp and Schneider, 2008).As slag density affects metal-slag separation in the ESR process, predicting the density of an ESR slag is important for appropriate refining and improved product quality. Although there are many studies investigating the density of slags (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Matsushita, 2011; Mills and Keene, 1987, 1981; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Sikora and Zielinski, 1974; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010), the prediction models built are generally valid for oxide-containing slags (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010). These models were built on either the molar volumes of the constituents (Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987) or the thermodynamically calculated enthalpy or free energy of mixing, which can be applied to a system containing constituents sharing an ion, such as an O- ion for oxide systems (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hillert, 1980; Persson et al., 2007). Some recent studies modeled the density of some oxide slags on their optical basicity (Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010)."

"In the base metals industry of today, operations required to continuously improve productivity and reduce unit production costs. Consistent with these goals is the improvement of the muck haulage cycle from open stopes with the No. 12 Mine.Existing haulage from open stopes occurs with LHD units experience at Brunswick indicates that LHD units have a higher unit cost per tonne mucked than loader-truck combinations when the haulage exceeds approximately 150 m.The reintroduction of open stoping at Brunswick made existing loader-truck combinations unsuitable. It was recognized that application of recent continuous loading technology could potentially result in significant unit cost savings and productivity increases.A review of the technology resulted in the testing of the Voest Alpine AL60 loader in the open stopes located on the 1000m Le vel. Testing began in January 1988 and finished in late November 1988. The test will provide experience as well as quantified production and maintenenace parameters f or the purpose of quantifying production unit costs and system productivity, ultimately resulting in a decision to further utilize or not utilize the loader as a primarymucking unit at Brunswick .INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. produces approximately 10500 tonnes per day from the No. 12Mine located 35 km southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick Mining is the largest (single mine) producer of zinc in the world having mined over 52 million tonnes since 1964. Many years of production still remain with proven and probable reserves in excess of 90 million tonnes. Reserves grade at an average of 3.65% Pb. 8.99070 Zn, 99g/mt Ag and 0.32% Cu . The operation employs 1446 people with approximately 800underground including operations and maintenance staff.In the No. 12 Mine two major mining methods are presently utilized . The primary method is Mechanized Cut and Fill (MCF) accounting for approximately 6500 tonnes per day from four major areas. The remaining 4000 tonnes per day is produced from open stopes with the majority of 2800 tonnes per day being produced by the 1000 level.The 1000Level contains 30 million tonnes segmented into open stope blocks 30 m high, 15m and 30 m on strike , with a transverse width of 10m to 50 m (Fig. I). Stopes are organized on a primary secondary stope arrangement along strike. Primary stopes are undercut and overcut full size with the back fully cablebolted. All stope and lateral development is driven 4.0 m high. All stopes to date are flat bottom (Fig. 2). Primary stopes are filled with cemented rock- fill , secondaries with conventional rockfill, Haulage from the stopes is primarily with 8-yard LHD units ; mucking is approximately 50% conventional and 50% remote. Haul distance to date has averaged approximately 150m with current stope haul distances of approximately 300m. Haulage is presently to a small jaw crusher situated on the 1000 Level. From August 1989on, haulage will be to a set of ore passes feeding to a large gyratory crusher situated on the 1200 Level. Start up of the gyratory crusher corresponds to an increase in tonnage from 1000 Level to 4100 tonnes per day."

This roper, written after completion of that study, describes s the work and summarizes the data obtained. When the study of roof movement as begun at Crucible two ideas were advanced on decay Of timber by some of the officials: (1) That timber decay vas unusually rapid in the Crucible mine, and (2) that timber coated with rock dust decayed more rapidly than those teat were not so coated. There yore no records by which these ideas could be tested, and it appeared wise to make a limited; investigation particularly of the effect of rock dusting on decay, as rock dusting is an important means of preventing coal-dust explosions.]

The Ashanti mine is located within the Lower Proterozoic Birimian of Ghana, and covers a concession of 474 square kilometres at its Obuasi operations which comprise large scale underground, surface and tailings treatment facilities. The mine had operated for a century at the end of 1997 and had produced nearly 25 million ounces of gold, a significant proportion of which came from the underground operations. This paper covers the strategy under which exploration for both surface and underground mineral resources was instrumental in enabling the expansion programme to go ahead together with the methodologies and results that have developed in the exploration area over the last five years. Within capital expenditure constraints, the objective on surface is to replace oxide depletion with a secondary objective of discovering new sulphides in areas other than the main trend. In the underground, the exploration strategy is directed at replacement of both underground and surface sulphide depletion, minimising finding costs and assisting the development of long lead time infrastructure. The exploration application describes the methodologies in use for both surface and underground exploration that have been developed in recent years in conjunction with a description of a major review conducted in 1995/96 of the exploration database using an integrated approach, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and structural geology. A revisit of soil geochemical data in particular, and modification of exploration methodology led to the success in finding relatively significant new oxides in 1997.

The dissolution of metals from various metal-mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97 pct saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79 pct or 70 pct saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained nearly constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries' mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

THE state of development of its iron and steel industries serves as a 1eading index to the general condition of a nation's business affairs. In this paper, the authors present an economic study of the progress of this group of industries in Canada for the decade 1927-1936. The statistical data and most of the tables which accompany this article have been com-piled by John Casey, Statistician, Bureau of Mines; the text and some of the computations have been prepared by the seni0r author. The principal source of statistical information has been the publications of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics; where other sources have been consulted, they are noted in the text. All weights are given in short tons. Records for the years 1913 and 1918 are also presented in the group of tables dealing with iron ore and pig iron; they will serve as a basis for comparison with nearly normal years in the two decades prior to 1927-36, which included the abnorma1 years of the Great War. GENERAL REVIEW At the beginning of the decade under review, this group of industries had returned to almost normal production, as determined by pre-war conditions. Iron ore consumption showed a steady increase between 1927 and 1930; a marked decline began in 1930 and reached its culmination in 1932, when the recorded consumption of ore was 293,353 to11s, about 16 per cent of the average consumption during the first four years of the decade; the last four years of the decade show a gradual increase in consumption; the amount of ore used in 1936 was still slightly below the amount used ten years before, in 1927 (see Table 1, top).

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of columbium from 19 deposits (3 producers and 16 nonproducers) in 7 market economy countries (MEC?s). Brazil has the largest recoverable columbium resource, posessing approximately 2.39 million metric tons Wmt), or 69 pet of the MEC total (3.47 Mmt). The Western Hemisphere countries of Brazil, Canada and the United States contain 3.14 Mrnt of recoverable columbium or 90 pnt of the MEC total. Columbium recovered as a byproduct of tin mining is not included as part of MEC resources in this study. Currently producing mines are Araxa and Catalao in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada, These three mines have 2.42 Mmt of recoverable resources or approximately 69 pct of the MEC total. It is estimated that these mines, operating at full capacity, could satisfy cumulative MEC demand (based on an annual growth rate of 5.1 pct) for the next 20 yr. The United States is totally dependent upon foreign sources for its columbium supply. The majority of U.S. columbium is imported from Brazil in the form of steelmaking- grade ferrocolumbium. Canada has been the sole source of pyrochlore concentrates since Brazil discontinued exports in 1981. The United States also imports small (but important) quantities of columbium as columbite concentrates from Nigeria and Brazil, as columbite contained in tin slags from Thailand and Malaysia, and as synthetic concentrates from the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Bureau of Mines and many member companies of the Industrial Sand Association have been working in several areas to reduce personal exposure to respirable dust. Areas investigated include ventilation, modification of hardware, moisture addition to the product, and improved housekeeping practices. Ventilation systems have been devised and shown to contain 100 pct of a tracer gas released within the hood. An industrial clean air island has been developed and shown to reduce dust levels 90 pct at the opera- tor's position, Modification of hardware on a bag filling machine has been demonstrated to reduce dust 83 pct at the machine operator's lapel. This particular development has been termed a significant advancement in the state-of-the-art of bag filling by industry representatives. Addition of moisture to dried product materials has been tested with results showing dust reductions of 90 pct are possible!, Control of the moisture addition method still needs refinement and costs may be prohibitive. Dust sampling results clearly show the benefits of housekeeping practices such as building cleaning and vacuum sweeping. Rotation of work schedules is also effective for reducing personal exposure.

Rock mass strength and brittleness generally have a significant impact on both cavability and fragmentation. Variability in these properties across a panel or block footprint is of particular interest because stronger units have the potential to significantly impact cave shape. This paper describes how FLAC3D™ was used to examine the impact of variability in rock mass properties on predicted cave performance to aid in assessing potential risks associated with the proposed design.A case study orebody was subdivided into a number of domains to reflect the heterogeneity of the rock mass at the scale of a proposed inclined cave. The results suggest that the presence of stronger units has the potential to impact cave shape significantly in the southern half of the cave footprint and could increase the potential for cave stalling at shallow depths. If this unit is stronger and less brittle than expected, an overhang is predicted to develop in the southern half of the inclined cave at depth. The effective hydraulic radius is significantly reduced due to the overhang in the south, and the cave could eventually stall at shallower depths in the north.CITATION:Garza-Cruz, T V and Pierce, M E, 2016. Impact of small projectiles with velocities between 0.9 and 7.3 km per sec on basalt produce craters chiefly by the ejection of fragments. Weight-size distributions of the ejecta are linear for part of the size range of the fragments. Cumulative weight-size distributions of the ejecta from different craters vary because of erratic formation of large fragments and a large percentage of ejecta below 0.1 mm. In the range of velocities studied, the crater depth is approximately proportional to the 0.75 power of velocity of the projectile. This relationship may represent a transition regime between the fluid impact regime and the undeformed projectile impact regime. The volumes per unit of projectile energy of the craters produced are comparable to those reported for lower speed projectile impact and drill bits. An experimental investigation of projectile impact on rock is being conducted jointly by the Ames Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey. Projectiles are launched with light-gas guns at the Ballistics Range of the Ames Research Center. The craters and ejecta produced in these experiments are being studied by the U.S. Geological Survey. Steel, aluminum and polyethylene projectiles weighing from 0.25 to 0.015 g were accelerated to velocities of 0.88 km per sec (2,900 fps) to 7.3 km per sec (24,000 fps) with a light-gas gun, using hydrogen as the propellant medium. Projectiles impacted the targets normal to plane rock surfaces in an atmosphere of air with a nominal pressure of 25 to 50 mm of mercury. The metal projectiles were mounted in supporting four-piece nylon sabots, which guided the projectiles down the launching tube. After launch, aerodynamic drag acted to separate the sabots from the projectiles. Impact velocities were determined with time measurements and spark photographs of the projectiles in flight. Ejecta were collected in lucite and aluminum containers placed around the target block. A small hole in the containers permitted projectile entry. Impact of projectiles of the size employed produced craters in the rock targets chiefly by ejection of fragments. The craters are small, roughly conical depressions with crushed and intensely fractured rock at the bottoms of the depressions. The ejecta are composed of pieces of the projectile and rock fragments ranging in size from a few tenths of a micron or less to several centimeters in maximum dimension. In this paper, the structural features of the craters, the weight-size distributions of the recovered ejecta, and crater depth and crater volume relationships are described. Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize productivity, the influence of reclamation parameters must be well understood ? which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass appraisals, and also the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, we use biomass production experimental plots on reclaimed mine sites established by the Powell River Project (PRP) for a comparative study between satellite measurements of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and inventory estimates of biomass under a variety of conditions. The PRP is a unique public-private partnership in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia dedicated to enhancing beneficial use and environmental protection of mined lands.

Introduction Federal and state laws enacted to regulate coal mining and the accompanying public concern about the adverse effects that mining might have on land use have focused much attention on the subsidence of the land surfaces over underground mines. Some questions asked are: • Will abandoned mines subside in the future even though they have exhibited no surface adjustment to date? • If so, when will subsidence take place? • Can a specific surface area be affected by subsidence more than once? • What surface form will the subsidence feature take? • Is there any way to predict when subsidence will occur and end? An attempt is made here to address these questions insofar as it is possible with available data and experience of evaluation of subcritical extraction conditions. Mining that results in subsidence features can be classified as supercritical, subcritical, and critical with respect to the minimum span lengths of the worked-out rooms (Fig. 1). A complete basin will not develop fully immediately over subcritical conditions because the span lengths of the entries are less than the critical dimension (Wardell, 1983). Passageways, entries, and room-and-pillar panels are all included in the subcritical category. Because of the short span lengths, subcritical mining conditions tend to be stable over the life of the mine unless adverse geologic conditions exist (Gray et al., 1974; Dunrud, 1976). Various roof control and support procedures are employed to maintain entry stability during mining. Little information exists concerning the time factor of subsidence over areas of subcritical extraction. Data that have been collected relate to longwall mines, whereby the cavity sizes are designed large enough to induce caving behind the working faces so that complete subsidence at the surface occurs within a short period of time. The UK's National Coal Board (1975) has reduced the enormous amount of data it has collected to empirical correlations and has published these correlations in its Subsidence Engineers Handbook. The handbook states that "None of the foregoing remarks applies to pillar and stall working," with respect to the section discussing the time factor of subsidence caused by longwall mining (National Coal Board, 1975, p. 40). To understand and evaluate how time relates to subsidence above room-and-pillar mines, one must first recognize how mine cavities deteriorate and fail. The propagation of failure to the surface must then be studied, and, finally, the failures that are manifest at the surface in the form of depressions accompanied by both compressional and tensional movements must be investigated. Failure of mine cavities Any cavity beneath the earth's surface represents a condition of nonequilibrium and tends to close with time. Failure of cavities in a subcritical mine can be classified as failure of the roof, failure of the floor, failure of the supports (pillars, cribs), and elastic rebound of the rock. One mode of failure may dominate, but generally combinations of the four will occur. Also, initial instability of geologic materials and structural features and in situ stress may be unknown factors that can contribute to cavity failure. Roof failure is the most obvious opening stability problem in most operating mines. The bridging capabilities of the roof rock are dependent on the rock's material strength, geologic discontinuities, and reaction to humidity changes in the air of the mine. This type of failure may vary in magnitude from gradual flaking to massive roof falls. Mine floor instability can be manifest in the form of a general heave over a broad area or of individual pillar punching. The weaker and thicker the immediate floor material, the more prone a mine is to experience floor problems. Water seeping into an area can soften the underclay, reduce its bearing capacity, and precipitate failure of support for the overburden.

"Comminution circuits are widely used in nonferrous and precious metals milling. Steel crushers, grinding mills and grinding media are typically used in comminution circuits. Comminution circuit wear products, in the form of metallic iron (steel) fines, are unavoidably produced and report to undersize products in the classification circuit, i.e., flotation or leach feed, while tramp grinding steel (TGS) reports to classification oversize products and returns to the grinding mill, building up in the circulating load. In laboratory studies, TGS reduced grinding efficiency significantly, the impact being dependent upon the size of the TGS present in the mill. Because iron fines adsorb flotation reagents effectively, iron fines increase reagent consumption and reduce flotation recovery. Iron fines are also capable of reducing gold recovery in cyanidation circuits via a cementation reaction. When using filtered gold solution from the cyanidation circuit of an Alaskan gold mine, the gold concentration in solution was reduced by 0.2 to 2.6% over various reaction periods when iron fines were present in the solution.IntroductionComminution circuits are widely used in copper, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and precious metal mills. Flotation and leaching processes are usually preceded by comminution (crushing and grinding) circuits in order to liberate valuable minerals for effective separation, concentration or dissolution by the subsequent flotation or leaching processes.Steel crushers, grinding mills and grinding media are typically used in comminution circuits. Comminution circuit wear products, in the form of metallic iron (steel) powder, are unavoidably produced and report to undersize products in the classification circuit (flotation or leach feed), while tramp grinding steel (TGS) reports to oversize productions during classification and returns to the grinding mill, building up in the circulating load. Variables affecting the amount of metallic iron powder and TGS produced in a comminution circuit include ore hardness, grinding mill operating conditions, comminution circuit design and the metallurgy of the steel used for manufacturing crusher liners, mill liners and grinding media. As one example, a comminution circuit product of 80% passing 200 mesh at the Pogo Mine, AK is estimated to contain approximately 2 kg/t of metallic iron. A finer grind will generally produce a comminution circuit product with higher metallic iron fines content."

The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

Many of the existing thermodynamic values for the titanium halides are estimates, including all the entropies and high-temperature heat contents of their crystalline and liquid phases. This report contains the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurents (which lead to entropy values at 298.15° K,) and high-temperature heat-content measurements of four halides - trichloride, tribromide, tetrabromide, and tetraiodide. The new data are combined with selected heat-of-formation values at 298.15° K. to obtain improved values of the heats and free energies of formation of these halides at high temperatures, thus supplementing the previous data of Kelley and Mah.5/ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This investigation was conducted under a cooperative arrangement between the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research. The work was done by Bureau of Mines personnel using Bureau of Mines calorimetric equipment. This Bureau of Mines report examines the injury experience in the quarrying industry For the years 1966-67. Twenty-eight tables for each year are presented in which disabling work injuries are summarized by department, source of injury, extent or disability, part of body injured, and nature of injury. Correlative information on employment, worktime, and operating activity is also presented.

Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.
