Previously reported work on total oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite concentrates ha s shown that high copper extractions are obtained at 210°C and 0.4 MPa oxygen pressure. A simple integrated flow sheet using pressure leaching, solution treatment involving precipitation with a calcium base, and electrowinning to produce wire-bar-quality copper is described. Reagent and energy requirements developed from this work indicate that the process could be attractive for small operations where a smelting-refining complex cannot be justified.

"The Agrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation mines and processes up to 6,000 t/d of phosphate ore. Run-of-mine crushing to minus 6 inches is done in a toothed roll-crusher, while grinding is done in a SAG/ball mill circuit with no coarse recycle classification of the SAG mill discharge. The primary grinding mill is an 18 ft. diameter x 9 ft. EGL, 1500 HP variable speed SAG mill and the secondary mill is a 13 ft. diameter x 21 ft. long, 2000 HP fixed speed, ball mill. When hard ore was treated, the SAG mill restricted the tonnage that could be ground. When soft ore was treated, the ball mill and spiral classifier overloaded and restricted throughput.Recommendations from a plant benchmark and an ore hardness testing program, on how to better utilize installed energy in the Agrium SAG mill when treating soft ore, and how to obtain best results when treating hard ore, were checked in a pilot plant investigation in the 3 ft. diameter Starkey-PRO Pilot SAG Mill. Correlation between the ore hardness testing and the results from the 3’ Pilot SAG mill was very good. In addition, the work indicated the results that could be expected for the different ore types when using either smaller SAG discharge grates and/or a vibrating screen with 10 mesh square opening cloth.INTRODUCTIONAgrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Operation consists of a 6800 t/d open pit mine and a concentrator, near the Town of Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario. The two major ore types are sandy ore and cemented ore. Sandy ore is fine, soft and easy to grind in the SAG mill while cemented ore is harder, more blocky and difficult to grind in the SAG mill. The ratio of sandy to cemented ore in the deposit is thought to be in the order of 80:20 but can range as high as 5050, so it was important for the grinding circuit to have the ability to treat sandy ore alone."

Pig iron and silicospiegeleisen were produced experimentally from a very low-grade manganiferous iron ore from Steep Rock, Ontario, by a two-stage electric smelting process. The most favourruble operating conditions were determined for each stage. Cement clinker then was made by calcining the slag from the second stage of smelting, with additional limestone and alumina. (This slag would normally be a waste material). The cement clinker produced had the composition of commercial Portland cement, and met the physical test requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Specification A5-1951 for normal Portland cement as well as could be expected for a material produced on .such a small scale.

The last decade has seen an enormous increase in the use of contractors right across the Australian mining industry. So much so that contractors now operate 33 of the 68 underground metalliferous mines around Australia and are making significant inroads into iron ore in the west and coal in the east. Safety used to be a low priority for many contractors. The picture has changed dramatically in recent years as most contractors take a far more professional approach to safety management. This paper examines the changes that have occurred and the requirements for effectively managing safety in a contracting environment.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.

Model experiments were carried out on the mass transfer of iodine between n-hexane and a 4 2 X 10-3 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The influence of mechanical stirring by means of small gas bubbles (ca. 0.01 ml in volume) on mass transfer was examined in independent experiments. The results were described with the help of the penetration theory and in the case of bubble stirring with the help of a mathematical model based on this theory. S LAG-METAL reactions, especially those in steel-making processes, often occur under conditions where gas is evolved in the form of bubbles that break through the slag-metal interface. It is known that stirring by means of bubbles increases the mass transfer coefficient, but there has been very little quantitative work done in this field. Because of the difficulties that attach to experimental work at high temperatures this study was confined to model experiments at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The transport of iodine from an n-hexane layer into a weak sodium hydroxide solution was studied a) with stirring by means of bubbles and b) with mechanical stirring. The apparatus for the experiments with bubbles consisted of the cell, two Dreschel bottles filled with hexane in order to saturate the nitrogen flow, one flow meter, and a nitrogen gas cylinder fitted with a fine-regulating valve. Fig. 1 shows the cell consisting of a glass cylinder 33 cm in height with an overall diameter of 7.5 cm embedded in a copper flange. The flange is connected to a Plexiglas plate and to the gas inlet. The Plexiglas plate has holes of 0.2 mm diam bored into it which are spaced 1 cm from each other. For the experiments with mechanical stirring the bottom of the cell was sealed off by a Plexiglas plate. The upper layer was stirred by means of a glass stir-rer and the bottom layer with the help of a magnetic stirrer in a counter rotatory direction. Both stirrer speeds could be varied continuously. A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. This then has implications for resource classification if the classifications are based heavily on the OK quality without consideration of the true SMU distribution.CITATION:Kentwell, D, 2014. Information Circular 6746 reviewed the fatalities in Indiana coal mines. for the fiscal year October 1, 1951 to September 30, 1933. Since then Indiana has changed its fiscal year to the period July 1 to June 30, but as most statistical data on accidents are arranged according to calendar years, the data in this paper are for the last 3 months of 1932 and the calendar year 1933, rather than for the new Indiana fiscal year. Tables 1 and 2 list the fatalities in Indiana coal mines3/ by cause and occupation for the last 3 months of 1932 and for the calendar year 1933. The fatalities for the small wagon mines employing fewer than 10 men are separated from those employing 10 or more men to call attention to the ex- tremely high fatality rate in small mines, largely because the State mining law does not apply to them nor do they come under the jurisdiction of the Indiana mine inspectors; as a result health and safety conditions are ex- tremely bad. During the last 3 months of 1932, 5 (approximately 42 percent of the total) fatalities occurred in the small mines, while for the calendar year 1933, 12 (approximately 32 percent) of the fatalities occurred in them. The Indiana Division of Mines and Kining estimates that these small mines have an annual production of approximately 325,000 tons, or about 4.5 percent of the total coal-mine production of the State. In other words, for these small mines the fatality rate per tons mined during 1933 was about 10 times as great as for the mines employing 10 or more men. Another lamentable feature in connection with the fatalities in small mines is that very few carry any compensation insurance and the owners are not worth enough financially for dependents of victims to collect anything under the common law; as a result, the dependents of those killed usually are left penniless and subjects of public charity.

One Bureau of Mines goal is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts associated with industrial plants emitting waste gases containing S02. To help meet this goal, a regenerable flue gas desulfurization process was developed. This process, known as the citrate process, uses a buffered weak acid solution to absorb S02 from the waste gas. The absorbed S02 is reacted with H2S to precipitate elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. The H2S feedstock for the process, if not otherwise available, may be produced by reacting two-thirds of the recovered elemental sulfur with natural gas and steam. Laboratory investigations and pilot plant operations were conducted by the Bureau to determine if H2S from the natural gas, sulfur, and steam reaction was suitable for the citrate process. The laboratory investigations, in which an H2S generator was integrated with other citrate process operations, provided a basis for design and operation of the pilot plant. The objective of the pilot plant was primarily to provide H2S for the citrate pro-cess pilot plant at the Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho. The design capacity of the pilot plant was 0.4 to 1.25 tons of H2S per day. The operation demonstrated that (1) a 77-to 79-dry-volume-percent H2S product could be produced from pilot-plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam; (2) the product R2S regenerated the SO2-loaded citrate solution; and (3) under certain conditions over 95 percent of the natural gas could be converted to H2S.

The high temperature processing of nickel laterite ore is currently dominated by the Rotary Kiln- Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology. The ratio of SiO2/MgO (S/M) in the ore is one of the critical parameters that determines the success of the RKEF process. Incompatible S/M ratios in the ore can cause aggressive chemical interaction between the slag and MgO refractory. The slag-refractory interaction at conditions relevant to nickel laterite ore smelting was investigated in the present study. Synthetic mixtures representing the slag compositions of nickel laterite ore smelting were prepared by mixing MgO, SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, and Fe and heating the mixtures in steel containers at 1300°C under an argon atmosphere for 3 hrs. Pure MgO crucible were used as containment material in the melting process of the mixtures to represent the MgO refractory. The kinetics of the slagrefractory reaction were investigated using samples with selected initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 (wt/wt) (with constant CaO = 3 wt per cent, Al2O3 = 5 wt per cent, FeO = 10 wt per cent) by performing melting at 1500°C in MgO crucibles for 5, 30, and 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. The effect of the S/M ratio in slag on the slag-refractory interaction was also investigated by performing melting of mixtures with different initial S/M ratios of 1.75, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 (wt/wt) in MgO crucibles at 1500°C for 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. After the melting process, each sample was quenched in water, mounted in resin, ground, polished, and coated. The interaction between the slags and MgO refractory was then evaluated by analysing the polished samples using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.0 thermochemical software were performed based on the experimental slag compositions, refractory, and conditions to support the evaluation process. The results show that a higher S/M ratio in slag leads to a higher tendency for the refractory component to dissolve into the slag. A higher S/M ratio in slag also leads to an increasing extent of solid-state diffusion of iron oxide into the remaining refractory grains. The dissolution of MgO into the slag is rapid; the MgO concentration in the final slag increased by 2.4 wt per cent and 5.7 wt per cent at initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 wt/wt, respectively, within 5 and 30 mins of the melting process.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, bulk nickel and copper concentrate is processed in two Inca flash furnaces and Peirce Smith converters to produce Bessemer matte containing 0.6%Fe. After slow cooling and Matte Separation, Bessemer matte is converted into three main products using magnetic separation and flotation technology: (1) a nickel containing chalcocite concentrate (MK); (2) two types of copper containing nickel sulfide (ME and MR); (3) metallics (MYN). MK is further processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK Reactor to produce semi-blister copper containing ~4%Ni and ~3±1 %S. The semi-blister copper is then purified in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) to produce blister copper by reducing Ni, Fe and S content through oxidation. High melting point NiO is formed inside the MPVs. The accumulation of solid NiO and other oxides requires periodic cleaning by adding reductant and furnace matte, a unique process called "washout" at Inca. For many years, the reductant used for the "washout" process has been 15%Si Ferro-silicon. With increasing cost and limited suppliers for 15%FeSi, alternative reductants were pursued. This paper summarizes the development and commercialization of new alternative reductants for MPV "washout".

The mining industry generates an estimated 2.3 billion tons of solid waste each year and the total accumulated mineral resource solid waste at both active and inactive mine sites, approaches 30 billion tons. Five industries generate 85 percent of mine solid waste: copper, phosphate, iron, uranium, and coal. Over the past several years, the Federal government has shown increasing interest in the proper disposal of solid wastes generated by the mining industry. Three new pieces of federal legislation have been passed recently beginning with the most comprehensive regulatory authorization passed in 1976, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which has been amended to the Solid Waste Disposal Act Amendments of 1980. RCRA is implemented and enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and intended to control municipal and industrial solid wastes. Next came the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 which is implemented and enforced by the Department of Interior to control coal surface mining and the surface effects of underground coal mining, and finally, the recent Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) of 1978 implemented by EPA and enforced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to control uranium mill tailings disposal.

The need for onsite gas monitoring during, or following, a major incident at an underground coal mine has long been recognised. Recommendations from inquiries following Queensland mine disasters have included ?qualified persons and equipment for rapid analysis of gas samples be available in times of emergency? and that ?this may be accomplished by either mobile laboratories or laboratories established in each mining locality.? Following the Moura No. 2 disaster, the Queensland Government allocated funds to Simtars for a mobile laboratory to respond should such a disaster occur again in the future. This vehicle was commissioned in 1997 and has been used at many mine sites under a wide range of scenarios. Simtars, armed with over ten years of operational experience with this mobile laboratory, has taken an active role in the design and construction of a modernised replacement unit. With a twenty point tube bundle system and ultrafast gas chromatograph the result is, arguably, the best equipped mobile gas analysis laboratory for mine emergency response in the world. This paper outlines the features of the new laboratory, its capabilities and the philosophy behind the design and inclusions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted large-scale laboratory copper ore leaching tests to enable improving copper recovery from large dump-leaching operations. This was done by comparing leaching progress when copper was recovered from recycled leach liquor either by cementation or by solvent extraction. Copper was leached from 7-ton ore samples at room temperature using pH 2 ferric sulfate solutions. With are samples containing 11 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, no marked advantage in using either of the copper recovery methods was evident after 416 days of leaching. With ore containing 32 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, solvent extraction of copper was advantageous in that 60 percent of the copper was extracted after 568 days, whereas only 48 percent of the copper was extracted when cementation was used. Less acid was consumed during leaching when solvent extraction, rather than cementation, was used for copper recovery. Iron, contributed by cementation with scrap iron, plugged the ore bed containing 32 percent fines.

"INCRAMUTE alloy (nominally 45Mn-53Cu-2Al wt. %) has a specific damping capacity as high as 0.4, through a solid-solution and aging treatment. The damping behavior of the alloy is highly temperature-dependent and shows a peak near room temperature. The inadequate strength in the high damping condition restrains the practical application of the alloy, as structural components. Ferromagnetic MnB particles are dispersed in the alloy during induction remelting the matrix alloy in an argon atmosphere. Surface modification of the MnB particles by mechanical alloying (MA) and suitable control of the addition process cause a homogeneous distribution of MnB particles in the alloy. In the composite containing 2 wt. % MnB particles, temperature dependence of damping capacity is improved, and higher damping capacity is still retained in the temperatures over 60 °C. Meanwhile, the Young's modulus and tensile strength were also increased by about 20%. The roles of the MnB particles in improving both damping behavior and mechanical properties were also discussed.IntroductionMany viscoelastic materials, such as rubbers, polymers and plastics, have the superior ability to damp vibration and noise. However, in the applications as structural materials the high damping capacities of materials are pursued upon the satisfactory mechanical properties, especially those at elevated temperatures. Damping alloys are finding more and more applications in structures where noise and vibration ·should be ·eliminated. Specific damping capacity (SDC), defined as the ratio of the energy dissipated to the maximum vibration energy stored per cycle, is usually used to evaluate the damping capacity of alloys. INCRAMUTE damping alloy, developed by the International Copper Research Association, Inc., has a nominal composition of 45Mn-53Cu-2Al in weight percent. The high damping· microstructure of this alloy is obtained through the solution treatment at 820 °C followed by a water quench and aging at 400°C for 10 hours followed by cooling to room temperature [1]. With the heat treatment, a SDC peak ·vs. temperature of as high as 0.4 was observed in the alloy at the strain amplitude of about 10-3 while a tensile strength of about 500MPa was sustained."

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

A 3-stage fluidizing bed process of chlorination, selective oxidation and sulfur chloride conversion was tested for processing of a chalcopyrite concentrate. It was found that the use of excess oxygen was essential to a stable operation in the oxidation reactor. The oxygen-excess gas will inevitably cause the oxidation of the sulfide concentrate in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. A new flowsheet is proposed to separate the chlorination and the selective oxidation steps with separate flow paths of the fluidizing gases, thereby preventing the passage of oxygen-excess gas in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. The feasibility of the proposed flowsheet was demonstrated in a laboratory-scale fluidizing bed setup.

Seventeen samples were carbonized by the BM -AGA pilot - plant test method and in industrial ovens . Chemical and physical properties of the samples were determined , and the physical properties of the cokes prepared by the two methods were compared . Since the capacity of the plants from which these samples were obtained is about 30 percent of the 1959 total for the United States , the data given in this report are indicative of the chemical and physical properties of blends used to produce industrial cokes and the acceptable chemical and physical properties of the resultant coke .
