Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Crude titanium metal, produced by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, is contaminated with some excess magnesium end adhering magnesium chloride when it is removed from the reaction pot. The method of vacuum 'purification is described in which the crude mixture is heated in a vacuum at a temperature of about 1,700° F. and the magnesium metal and chloride are volatilized away from the titanium, leaving it practically magnesium-free in a sponge-metal form. The pilot-plant equipment is described in detail, together with the technique of operation and methods of sponge recovery. Operating data is given, which compares ten 24- to 30-hour heats with ton 48-hour heats, and finally, power and labor requirements are discussed. Vacuum purification of raw titanium produced by the Kroll process has boon employed for treating of several tons of raw titanium with results for superior to those achieved by the method of leaching and grinding. The operations described, while on but little more than pilot-plant scale, indicate commercial feasibility of the process, even though it is a batch-typo operation. All equipment is either of standard manufacture or can be readily fabricated from standard materials, and operation of the units can be satisfactorily maintained by semiskilled labor.

Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan

The illustrated device uses the principle that the lamp can burn with a smaller inlet passage if the air is rich in O2 and that the size of the inlet can be made a measure of O2 percentage. The appliance consists of an adjustable cut-off applied to the inlet of a safety lamp of the improved Gray pattern. Precision is assessed from tables of calibration tests in air contaminated with blackdamp of CO2:N2 composiiton 1:5.67 at temperatures of 40-70 degrees F. Results are presented of tests at St. Germain's colliery, of tests in air contaminated with pure CO2 and of air contaminated with both blackdamp and inflammable gas; published ranges in mine-air blackdamp compositions are tabulated as ranging from 90.06% N2 to 43.90% CO2. When firedamp is present at 1.25-2.5%, its content must first be estimated by means of the cap and a fifth of its value then deducted from the lamp reading for O2

"AbstractThe Tresfjord bridge is with its variety in foundation concepts and difficult soil conditions one of the most geotechnically challenging projects in Norway at the time. The project comprises design of large concrete caissons, steel core piles through large rock fills, and closed end steel pipe piles in up to 40m water depth driven in very hard moraine. Test piling has also been conducted to check feasibility of the concept, and PDA measurements have been used to verify sufficient capacity of piles. FactsThe Tresfjord bridge is part of the new export road from Ålesund to Åndalsnes on the North-West coast of Norway built by the Norwegian Road Administration. The bridge will reduce travel time with about 30 min between the cities, see Figure 1. The bridge is planned to open summer 2015.The Bridge crosses the Tresfjord and will be 1290 m long. The bridge is built as a free cantilever bridge and will be resting on a total of 20 nos. of foundations, where two are abutments resting on steel core piles, three are casted directly on bed rock and 13 are foundations resting on steel pipe piles. The last two foundations holding the main span will be concrete caissons resting on bed rock and moraine. Figure 2 shows a 3D model of how the finished bridge will look. Multiconsult AS is responsible for design and pile supervision , while the Joint-Venture Bilfinger-Tresfjordbridge ANS is responsible contractor.Soil ConditionsPercussion soundings and sampling together with coring have been performed in the individual foundations using a small geotechnical equipped vessel. Acoustic and refraction seismic profiling have also been carried out to tie in the layers between the boreholes.The soil conditions are varying over the length, but are in general dominated by a soft top layer (2-4 m) of sediments over very hard moraine with occasionally large boulders. Piles in the two foundations closest to shore on the western side of the bridge are piled to bed rock with penetrations up to about 27 m in soil.Water depth varies from about 10 to 40 m for the piled foundations. Figure 3 show how the topography of the seabed varies over the bridges length."

Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

O complexo Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014. A usina de tratamento produziu, em 2016, cerca de 15,5 milhões de toneladas secas de concentrado. O minério, explorado no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), passa pelas etapas de cominuição, classificação, concentração e separação sólido-líquido antes de ser bombeado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde é filtrado, estocado e embarcado para exportação. A lama e o rejeito da flotação são enviados para um espessador de 90 metros de diâmetro. Testes de sedimentação em bancada mostraram o efeito positivo da sedimentação dessa mistura de lamas e rejeito. A lama, composta predominantemente por partículas finas de hematita e argilo minerais, se adere a ao quartzo do rejeito, que possui maior diâmetro. Apesar dessa mistura aumentar a velocidade de sedimentação, ela propicia a formação de uma espuma com elevada estabilidade, devido a presença de finos da deslamagem e espumante da flotação. Foram feitos testes de bancada objetivando-se avaliar o efeito da retirada do rejeito da alimentação do espessador. A partir dos resultados foram traçados cenários com diferentes participações desse material e suas implicações no processo de sedimentação foram estimados.

Although the technique of diamond drilling was developed nearly 80 years ago, the use of this process as an aid to mining and other fields of engineering has increased greatly during the last decade , primarily as a result of the development of the cast -set bit , which now largely replaces the hand - set types , and of the use of bort instead of carbons . Since this transition to cast - set bits and bort diamond , many papers ( 1-14 ) have been written on the application of diamond drilling to various engineering problems . These papers contain , besides specification of the problems , some information on the labor and bit costs and a few data on drilling technique . These data , however , are subject to restricted interpretation owing to the large number of variables , which are not controlled in field drilling . Only one paper has come to the attention of the authors , namely , that by Sundberg and Lindqvist ( 16) , which reported a study of diamond drilling under controlled conditions . This paper was written early in the transition period, and the data and conclusions presented therein have had , without a doubt, considerable influence on the development of presentday diamond bits and In view of the fact that during the last 10 years thrilling procedure . have been new developments in diamond bits. and new applications of diamond drilling , a general program of research has been inaugurated to study the problems resulting from these changes .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Domeland Addition (5207) and Woodpecker (5206) RARE II areas during the summer of 1979. These study areas were examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves and where possible, to estimate values. The study areas are 9 air mi northeast of Kernville, California, and encompass 47,400 acres of primarily granitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith with some scattered exposures of older metasedimentary, volcanic, and metavolcanic rocks. These other rock units partially surround the exposed batholith in the Domeland Wilderness and consist mostly of late Paleozoic quartzites, mica schists, marbles, and meta-volcanics, Mesozoic quartz diorite and gabbro intrusives, and local Tertiary basalt and andesite flows.

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Increasing the powder factor form 1650 gr/m3 to 2480 gr/m3 by changing the blast pattern design showed that mill throughputs increase five per cent to 30 per cent for the new pattern.CITATION:Hakami, A, Mansouri, H, Ebrahimi Farsangi, M A, Dehghan, M R and Faramarzi, F, 2015. Verification of drilled shaft resistance is primarily obtained through the use of different load testing methods. Procedures utilized include conventional top down static loading, the Osterberg load cell (O-cell) test and dynamic tests such as the Statnamic method. The O-cell test provides a means of obtaining separately the base and side shear resistance behavior of drilled shafts (cast-in-drilled-hole). Alternatively, the Statnamic load test method enables the engineer to derive base and side shear behavior separately, based on measurements of load, accelerations and strains along the length of the shaft. However, due to time and cost constraints these tests can only be performed on selected shafts within a project. Post grouting of a drilled shaft base embedded within a cohesionless material, with a low mobility compaction grout, will essentially pre-load the shaft base soil against the side shear and self-weight in much the same manner as an O-cell load test (when the load cell is placed within the base vicinity). Therefore, successful post grouting of a drilled shaft would enable verification of both shaft side shear and base resistance simultaneously on each and every shaft it is carried out on. Additionally, such post grouted shafts display stiffer load-displacement response during subsequent downward, superstructure induced, loading compared to ungrouted shafts. Verification of resistance on each and every shaft through the use of post grouting will allow an increase in resistance factors (reduction in safety factor) used in the design. Two 6 ft. diameter drilled shafts were constructed in Fredonia, WA, for WSDOT, each with an approximate length of 52 ft. The shafts were terminated within medium dense poorly graded silty sand. Statnamic load testing of the shafts indicated maximum derived static side shear and base resistances of 2545 kips and 507 kips (1.6 in. displacement) for shaft One and 2466 kips and 212 kips (1.4 in. displacement) for shaft Two. Shaft Two was subsequently grouted, with a low mobility compaction grout. Shaft base mounted total earth pressure cells measured a maximum sustained pressure of 55.44 ksf during the compaction grouting operation. Shaft displacement reached 0.65 inches in the upward direction at termination of grouting. Comparison of grouting data with initial load test information indicates that properly instrumented post grouting verifies shaft base and side shear resistance. In addition, these grouting induced resistances were much higher than design values supplied by the engineer using conventional resistance factor design. Large scale laboratory testing also shows that base grouting verifies higher soil resistances than permissible in conventional design.

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

One criterion central to most definitions of reclamation is the restoration of mined lands to their original productive potential. This is often difficult to achieve on mined lands in the Northern Great Plains because of the rigorous climate (Bares 19;2) and various soil related problems including sodicity, salinity, soil permeability, low organic matter and plant nutrient deficiencies (Malakondaiah and Safaya 1982). Field study sites were established on recontotured mined areas during the early 1970's (prior to the topsoil mandate) in which several amendments were tested for their ability to improve spoil/topsoil conditions and, hence, increase plant production. Physical and chemical properties of these control (untreated) and amended spoils and topsoils have been summarized (Safaya et al. 1982). A number of grass and legume species combinations were studied. The general effects of one time (prior to seeding), single rate (approximately 100 mT ha-1) application of leonardite and/or slack coal to spoils and topsoils was the reduction of grass dry matter yields (NB 1 test site: dry matter yield (DMY) without slack was 110 g m 2 yr I ; DMY with slack was 80 g m -2 yr 1 I and the promotion of legume establishment and yield (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 13 g m 2 yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 93 g m 2 yr 1). On South Beulah topsoil, treated with leonardite, production of weedy species was remarkably lower than that without leonardite (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 252 g m - yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 177 g m 2 yr 1). The general effect of commercial fertilizer applied one time prior to seeding (rates ranging from 9-13-0 to 44-1 12-28 kg ha-1 of N-P-K) was to increase plant production during the first two to three years after which the effect disappeared. This effect was much more pronounced on spoils (NB I test site: DMY on spoils without fertilizer was 53 g m -2 yr -1; DMY on spoils with fertiliser was 132 gm -2 yr -1). Weedy species accounted for most of the biomas, production during the first growing season. Three of the test sites were designed to study plant production on topsoils and spoils. Establishment and production of grass species were comparatively better on topsoils (30 cm in depth) than on spoils while legumes were most successful on the soils (Center test site, 1979; DMY of grasses on topsoil was 170 g m 2 yr -1 DMY of grasses on spoils was 52 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on topsoil was 20 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on spoil was 191 g m 2 yr -1). Total plant production on topsoiled (302 m thickness) plots at the South Beulah site (DMY in 1979 of 269 g m 2 yr 1) was comparable to that of native western wheatgrass prairie (DMY of 262 g m -2 yr -1). An experiment was conducted to find out if time of planting would have any effect on establishment of grasses on spoils. It was fund that late fall seeding was superior to spring planting for establishment of wheatgrasses at NB 3 test site (Control Plot, 1975: DMY on spring-seeded was 1 g m -2 yr - 1; DMY on fall-seeded was 55 g m -2 yr -1). In general, wheatgrasses (slender, streambank, thickspike and western) yielded the most aboveground biomass of all the grass species tested; yellow sweetclover was the most successful legume. Yellow sweetclover established and was productive on both spoils and topsoils but only where competition with grasses was apparently minimal. Durar hard fescue established and thrived on topsoil but dry matter production was low compared to that of wheatgrasses. Emerald crown-vetch demonstrated a potential for growth on spoils where water conditions were adequate, whereas side-oats grama, prairie sand-reed, alkali sacaton, and bird's -foot trefoil demonstrated only sporadic success. Little bluestem did not become established at any of the test sites. Peak production of the planted species, especially grasses, was generally reached by the second week of July. Legume and weed production continued to increase into late August.

"In cooperation with The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey was conducted in 1929 and 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. The territory served approximates 650 square miles and includes 46 cities and towns. The transmission and distribution systems are on overhead construction and underground wires and cables run in underground conduits and manholes. There are 17,000 manholes on the system, and also an area in Boston proper served by the Edison tube system. These conduits and manholes are laid in various types of streets from the most modern type of cement roadbed to the older type of loose macadam. The conditions as found could be considered as typical of any public utility in the electric-light and power field. The survey extended over a period of about a year beginning in June, 1929, and ending in July, 1930, and during this time 1,765 different manholes were tested and a total of 4,068 tests were made.Previous to starting the actual survey, one of the writers, G. W. Jones, spent considerable time in Boston determining the best methods of practical· test procedure. In this work cooperation was given by John Campbell, superintendent, special service department, who for a number of years has been making a study of explosions in underground street areas and preventive measures in Boston and various cities.After this preliminary investigation the tests were continued by employees of the Edisun Company. Copies of all records of tests were forwarded to the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station so that the writers were in close touch with the progress of the survey, and changes could be made in the test procedure whenever deemed necessary."

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental base line studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months and the first gold bar was poured in Parch of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitering program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine?s twenty year life. Non-mined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

On any given mine site the water system is contingent upon its initial design. Through time the initial design is adjusted by a myriad of water management options in order to improve water system performance or to adapt to a new production capacity or method at the mine site. These options generally do not comprehensively consider energy requirements, so it is unlikely that any given mine water system will be optimised in terms of both water and energy uses. Thus this may simply shift constraints of efficiency of one resource dimension, water, to another, energy. As a result, changes in water systems would cause more energy-related issues to mining companies. For example, the companies would have an increase in operational cost and/or pay more for carbon tax with changes in their water system. Therefore, in order to avoid undesirable and potential unforseen energy and infrastructure issues in a mine life cycle, it is essential to select suitable water management options for a mine considering both water and energy resources simultaneously.Considering water and energy criteria in evaluating water management options consists of net water volume availability, net operational energy demand and net water replacement energy demand. Ideal water management options should be high in water volume availability but low in both operational energy demand and water replacement energy demand. A water option would also be favourable if it has low potential of causing adverse environmental impacts such as lowering groundwater tables due to groundwater withdrawal, or elevating saline constituents in surface waters when reusing brine for dust suppression. However, these environmental impacts are not considered in this analysis.This article presents a graphical method to assess mine water management options, based on these three criteria. The proposed method to assist in screening mine water management options includes two main steps:1. categorise water management options into prioritised groups2. rank the options within each prioritised group.The method is applied to a gold mine and presented in this article as a worked example. Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

This is one of a series of papers being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the dissemination of information on methods and practices used in the mining and preparation of crushed stone for market requirements. Performance in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour are given whenever that information is available. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods, and are, therefore, included if possible. In addition to the factual description of equipment and methods used, it is desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with the opertions at the Columbia plant of Palmetto Quarries Co. of Columbia, S.C. The plant is about one-half mile east of the Congaree River and adjacent to the southwest corner of the city of Columbia. Rail access is by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and by a spur strack of the Seaboard Airline Railroad.
