In the present paper, the performance of four approaches based on neural networks and geostatistical method for grade estimation are compared and analyzed their performance to find a proper method. Four methods, Multi Layer Perceptron neural network (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) and Ordinary Kriging (OK) are selected for ore grade estimation of variable Fe in an iron deposit located in Iran. For each method, two diagnostic statistics are calculated: Mean square error (MSE) and correlation coefficient. The results show the superiority of the General Regression Neural Network.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. "High intensity conditioning has been demonstrated in a number of cases to enhance fine particle flotation. The improvement could be attributed to the enhanced formation of particle aggregates. However, the understanding of aggregation mechanisms remains rather limited. Recently, an enhanced particle aggregation was observed by the formation of small air bubbles resulting from high intensity agitations (HIA). In this study, a novel visualization system is designed and constructed for characterizing the fine bubbles formed in an HIA cell. The new design allows determination of gas evolution and bubble size distribution. With this system, the effect of dissolved air on fine bubble generation by HIA is investigated. The results show that HIA creates a favorable environment for the formation of gas nuclei and small size bubbles due to hydrodynamic cavitation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a dominant separation technique employed by mineral industry to recover the valuable mineral particles. However, in general, particles finer than approximately 10 µm are not effectively recovered by conventional froth flotation technique due to their low inertia and high specific surface area (Fuerstenau, 1988). Therefore, the fine particle flotation has been considered as the central challenge of flotation research. Substantial advances have been made for fine particle flotation from both a theoretical and technological point of view (Fuerstenau et al., 1979; Song and Lu, 1990; Subrahmanyam and Forssberg, 1990; Sivamohan, 1990; Sedat and Barry, 1991; Matis, 1995). High intensity agitation (HIA), for example, has found some success to improve fine particle flotation kinetics in laboratory tests (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998; Rubio and De Brum, 1994).The effect of mechanical agitation on flotation kinetics has been recognized for many years. In mid-1970s, Warren (1975) reported that increasing the shear rate of the pulp could improve the efficiency of ultra fine particle flotation. He attributed this improvement in flotation to the formation of aggregates. This concept of aggregation has been extended by Rubio (1978), and Bulatovic and Salter (1989), who employed high intensity agitation (HIA) method to promote aggregation. They found that HIA with the addition of collectors, frothers and suitable modifiers significantly improved both the flotation recovery and selectivity of ultra fine sulphide minerals. The improvement was explained by warren’s shear flocculation theory. Till now, many studies (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998) have been undertaken to improve fine particle flotation by HIA. However, most of these studies were focused on the relation between energy input and flotation efficiency. Less information was available for describing how the aggregate formed during HIA process."

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1955 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 116 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1955 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

"In the context of today's continuously changing world, there are many factors which must be considered when attempting to assess the ability of Canada's primary copper producers to remain competitive in the face of increasing competition in world markets. In this paper, we have attempted to document those factors that will have the greatest impact on the future viability of Canada's copper industry, and to suggest possible strategies to fully utilize whatever inherent advantages Canada may have to enhance its competitive position. Technological factors related to the efficiency of precious and by-product metals recovery, energy type and utilization efficiency, production and sale of sulphur by-products, and control of 502 emissions are given high priority in this evaluation of Canada's future needs to remain competitive. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative viability of hydrometallurgical versus pyrometallurgical processes for copper; to address uniquely Canadian conditions and problems. Due consideration is also given to the economic incentives required to allow Canada's copper producers to compete under anticipated world market conditions and to facilitate the continued development of Canada's copper resources. IntroductionWhen we try to assess the viability or competitiveness of any industry the bottom line is still usually, ""Can we produce a pound of product cheaper than the competition?"" Canada's copper industry is certainly no exception. However, as with most resource-based industries dependent upon exports, there are many factors which have a significant effect on the cost components which make up the total cost of producing and selling a pound of copper. It is desirable therefore to have as clear a picture as possible of the cost components, the major factors affecting them, and how they compare with the competition, particularly the third-world copper producers.In this paper we have attempted to provide a brief outlook for world copper markets and a brief overview of Canada's competitive position. We have also attempted to document those factors which will have the greatest impact on future production costs, and have suggested possible initiatives to utilize inherent Canadian advantages to enhance our competitive position. Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. The green production of the steelmaking process has urgent requirements for fluorine-free fluxes. In this article, a new solid waste-based slagging flux was applied in the external dephosphorisation test of low silicon hot metal to replace the traditional fluorite-lime dephosphorisation slag. The results showed that under laboratory conditions, the new flux was utilised for smelting low-silicon molten iron with a phosphorus content of 0.10~0.13 wt per cent, the temperature of the molten iron was 1350°C and the slag amount was controlled at 2 per cent. Within ten minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron reached more than 50 per cent. When making slag with new flux, the slag melting time was about 40 seconds and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 8 wt per cent. In the industrial test of a 150 t molten iron ladle, under the same molten iron conditions, an out-of-furnace dephosphorisation test was conducted in the Kambara Reactor (KR) process. The flux material consumption per ton of steel was 8~10 kg. Within 15 minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron was about 30 per cent. During flux slag making, the slag melting time was about three minutes and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 6 wt per cent. This new solid waste-based flux has significant cost advantages and outof- furnace dephosphorisation effects and is expected to become the benchmark for a new generation of fluorine-free steelmaking fluxes.

As mining companies have to go deeper in search of ore and coal, the importance of protecting the highwall increases. Wall fatigue also increases with importance of the long life expectancy of a highwall, in particular the impact of fatigue influenced by resonance. Resonance is the tendency of a material to oscillate with greater amplitude at certain frequencies when exposed to a periodic force. Until recently, only dominant frequencies, either natural or induced, were all that could be measured through the fast Fourier transform of the blast-induced wave form.This paper presents a novel method to accurately predict the resonant frequency of a highwall. In fact, the method can predict the natural frequencies between any two monitoring points placed in line with the source of impact, and as such it can be used to determine the resonant frequencies of any physical object. The method not only predicts the resonant frequencies of the material; it predicts the structural response of the total frequency spectrum. This method helps describe the response of a mechanical structure to excitation. It describes the structure’s efficiency in the use of energy, that is, whether energy is dampened or consumed in resonance.The initial predictions have been so accurate that it made it possible to determine the fundamental frequency and the first six harmonics of a highwall in a northern Queensland coalmine. With the use of electronic detonators, the blast can be timed with a repeating delay to create an induced artificial frequency that has been determined to retain the least amount of energy.CITATION:Osterman, R, 2015. Previous paleodepth studies of low-sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Coromandel region indicated that economic gold mineralisation was generally limited to a depth zone of 100 to 400 m below the paleosurface. Notable exceptions are Waihi and Karangahake, where ore shoots extended to depths of about 750 and 900 m respectively. These studies have been extended to include Au-Ag, Hg and Sb epithermal deposits in Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The main paleodepth indicators used are sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and hydrothermal alteration mineralogy. Also the occurrence of lacustrine and fluvial sediments is an indicator of the paleosurface at their time of deposition. Selected paleodepth indicators have been compiled and mapped in a GIS environment. The distribution of the paleodepth indicators are used to define regional variations in erosion levels, and may be useful in predicting areas most likely to preserve the optimum depth window for gold deposition. In the Coromandel region, regional stream sediment geochemical data has also been used to broadly define erosion levels in terms of Zn, Pb and Cu representing deeper base metal zone mineralization and Hg and Sb representing shallower cinnabar and stibnite mineralisation. The interpretations of paleodepth and potential reconstruction of paleosurfaces are limited by the paucity of data, poor age control on the paleodepth indicators and the epithermal deposits, and marked relief and complex stratigraphy in the volcanic terranes.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. THE Myrtle group of mining claims is situated on Barkerville mountain in the Cariboo mining district of British Columbia, west of the old mining town of Barkerville. An 1,800-foot adit, known as the Shamrock tunnel, was driven in 1935-36 from the Barkerville road and in the general direction of the Myrtle group. It was proposed to enlarge this adit to more convenient section, extend it 2,500 feet int0 Myrtle ground, and from there drive a main entry 3,000 feet along the length of the group. Several laterals were also to be driven off this main entry as part of the tunnel schedule. It was thus originally proposed to drive 5,500 feet of new adit and 1,800 feet of laterals, a total of 7,300 feet of new work. Work was commenced with a bulldozer on April 21st, 1941, cutting a bench on the hillside for a plant site. The power plant was ready for operation on August 8th. Slashing and re-timbering of the old adit rook longer than was expected. It was found that 57 per cent of the length required timbering, chiefly by fore-poling, and there was also trouble in several sections with swelling ground. First round in the new face was taken on September 17th, when a 2-shift daily schedule was commenced. Due to delays in delivery of electrical equipment, it was not possible to add the third shift until November 14th. From then on, a 3-shift daily schedule was maintained with the exception of holidays and fortnightly change Sundays until August 1st, 1942, when shortage of labour caused the dropping of a shift. All work was suspended on August 14th. The ground through which the tunnel passed was such that the driving was often interrupted by the need of protective timber at the face. Further, crews were continuously employed timbering behind the face, and in maintenance of timbered sections in swelling ground. Roughly 980 feet of the new workings are now timbered, about 21 per cent of the total.

Residents of Maxwell Hill, a suburb of Beckley, West Virginia, reported from January until March of 1988 a series of earth tremors. The tremors rattled dishes, and the noises associated with tremors were sometimes loud enough to wake people at night. These events were puzzling because Beckley is in an area of low seismic activity. Maxwell Hill is located above abandoned coal mines, though no direct subsidence damage to surface structures has been documented. A research program was initiated to determine whether subsurface ground movements associated with the abandoned mines could be responsible for the seismic activity experienced at the surface. A hypothesis is proposed which states that seismic disturbances can be caused by abandoned mine failure when two conditions are met. First, some instability must exist at the mine level. The most likely cause of instability is the failure of pillars of coal that were left for support at the time of mining. Second, subsurface movements can result in significant seismic activity only when the rock above the mine contains at least one very strong and brittle layer that is prone to fail violently through rupture or fault slip movement. Analysis of the data indicates that both hypothesized conditions for mine-related seismicity appear to have been satisfied in the case of Maxwell Hill. It has therefore been concluded that the earth tremors experienced by Maxwell Hill residents probably are related to the abandoned mines. Analysis of the potential magnitude of these events indicates that they are unlikely to cause significant surface danlage. The probability that future events will disturb the residence of Maxwell Hill should be quite low based on the identified mechanism.

Several underground coal mines currently operating in the Beckley District of West Virginia are experiencing serious roof and floor problems. A significant portion of the estimated two billion tons of coal resources may be lost as a result of these ground control problems. Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines indicated that these problems are due in part to a high horizontal stress field. During this contract study, a field program was conducted to quantify the horizontal in situ stress. A total of 14 overcoring sites (using the Bureau of Mines strain-relief overcoring technique) in five mines were drilled producing 53 data sets. Analysis of the data was done to provide in situ horizontal stresses for each of the five mine, and for the district as a whole. Stress data indicate horizontal stresses far in excess of that predicted by theory and in some cases, up to six times the estimated vertical stress. In addition to the field testing, a detailed computer modeling study was conducted using finite element and boundary integral (displacement discontinuity) methods. Verification of in situ stresses was obtained by the models and analysis of various development geometries, mining methods and remedial techniques were conducted. Recommendations for reducing ground control problems and future studies are presented.

"THE mineral industry is constantly undergoing changes and facing challenges, and today we are in the midst of another serious one -namely, manpower requirement at every level in the mines, shops and plants. In the not too distant past we had a situation where labour was plentiful, although the equipment, by present-day standards, was quite inadequate, and that's easily understandable when you look back at the primitive methods by which our Western mines were first developed and operated, and then improved by the inventiveness and ingenuity of man.I'd like to show you a few slides from drawings made by Buck O'-Donnell which illustrate some of yesterday's methods of mining. Some of you probably had first-hand experience with some of these so you know they were tedious, time-consuming and involved a lot of heavy labour.Taking the Anaconda Company operations at Butte as an example, we can see what has happened in just the past ten years. In August of 1956, the Butte mines had 5,516 day's-pay employees and 976 salaried employees, for a total payroll of 6,492. In August of this year, there were 3,645 day's-pay employees and 605 on the salaried roll, for a total of 4,250. The number of contract miners had gone from 1,347 in 1956 to 606 in 1966 and that of other underground miners from 2,893 ten years ago to 1,149 this year. Along with these changes, however, another change of special significance has taken place, and that is in the number of skilled craftsmen, surface engineers and so on required for our operations. In 1966, we had 1,890 of these people, 600 more than in 1956 and nearly three times as many as just twenty years ago."

To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. Under the same condition, the speed of oxidation reaction was faster for the coal in the high geo-temperature environment, which was more liable to spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Lei, C, Deng, J, Xiao, Y, Shu, C, Wang, K and Wang, W, 2017. No presente trabalho busca-se avaliar o comportamento do solo virgem e com os resíduos, compactado, uma alternativa para área de Construção Civil. O estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar o solo (classificado como solo laterítico); e solo composto de polipropileno reciclado (rPP) e pó de madeira (PM); caracterizando a forma física e mecânica de rPP/PM para aterro. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influencia dessas adições no comportamento mecânico de camadas compactadas de solo, avaliando o efeito do teor de composto rPP/PM. As amostras de polipropileno reciclado (rPP), e serragem (PM), foram separadas cada uma em 10%, 20% e 30%, e aquecidas juntas, após o aquecimento misturadas ao solo. Sendo classificado como solo de baixa compressibilidade (ML), caracterizando um silte argiloso. Segundo a classificação HBR, tem-se P200 < 35%, LL > 40, IP < 10 e IG =0, assim o grupo de classificação pertence ao grupo A-2, subgrupos A-2-5. Os resultados de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC) do solo em estudo foram de 41% para amostra de solo e 130% para amostra de solo mais compósito.
