Definite progress has been made in accident prevention in Illinois during the past few years; the State Department of Mines and Minerals is receiving excellent cooperation from coal companies and employees, the companies are making greater effort to maintain their mines in good condi- tion, and the employees are eliminating more unsafe practices. As a result, some coal companies have made commendable safety records that prove that coal can be mined with a comparatively low accident rate. However, there is need for further improvement, as the accident rate of the State as a whole is much higher than it should be. During the 55-year period 1882-1936, in- clusive, reports of the State Department of Mines and Minerals show a total of 7,005 (an average of 127.36 per year) men killed in and around the coal mines. Of this number, 6,425 (91.7 percent) were killed underground, 346 (4.9 percent) in the shaft, and 234 (3.3 percent) on the surface. Of the fatalities underground, 3,300 (51.3 percent) were killed by falls of roof, sides, or face coal, 1,167 (18.1 percent) by haulage, 639 (9.9 percent) by handling explosives, 579 (9 percent) by explosions, 151 (2.3 percent) by electricity, and 589 (9.1 percent) by other means. Of the fatalities in the shaft, 171 men (46.5 percent) were killed by falling down the shaft, 14 (41.6 percent) by the cage, and 31 (8.9 percent) otherwise. On the surface, 113 (48.2 percent) of the fatalities were due to railroad cars, 51 (21.7 percent) to machinery, and 70 (29.9 percent) to other causes. The fact that 7,005 lives (an average of 127.36 per year) were lost during 1882-1936 is sufficient evidence that in the past too little interest has been taken in safety by either the management or workers. A realization of this deplorable loss of life should act as an incentive to the industry to make greater effort to prevent accidents in the future. After an accident occurs, the facts pertaining to it become history, and anything that may be done afterward cannot change in any way the damage that has already been done, such as loss of life, personal injury, and destruction of property. The main benefit that can be derived from an acci- dent is that suitable procedure may be adopted and some lesson may be learned to aid in preventing a similar accident in the future. Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

Information on volatilities is presented. The conclusion is reached that explosive pressures are significantly enhanced by inclusion of these materials.

Rock engineering plays a crucial role in contributing to sustainable development in South African mining. A framework for this has been created through legislation and structures to encourage the mining industry to have a long and prosperous future. However, rock engineering input is an essential element to achieving success. The most accessible deposits have been mined in South Africa and although large reserves still remain, many of these are difficult to access and will require excellent rock engineering knowledge and skill in the future. This is borne out by the fact that more than 50 % of fatal accidents are related to rock engineering issues. Many of these may be addressed with rock engineering solutions which are not beyond current rock engineering technology. A reduction in fatalities and injuries contributes to a sustainable mining industry.

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

OTML is demonstrating that business and country risk can be managed through effective, respectful partnerships with local communities. OTML?s relationships with the communities of PNG?s Western Province are multifaceted. Communities have borne the brunt of the mine?s environmental impact, yet have benefited enormously from the development that the mine has brought. Importantly, the PNG economy is now the ultimate beneficiary of more than four-fifths of the dividends from the mine, the majority of which are held in trust for long-term sustainable development projects. The paper describes how OTML works with the Western Province communities to create a secure operating environment that recognizes the people?s aspirations for development and self-determination.

Coal carbonization, the basis of a major industry, consists in heating coal in the absence of air at various temperatures (ranging from 500° to 1,000° C.) that are selected according to the kind of products desired. During this treatment, the complex organic substances that comprise the major part of the coal are converted into several useful products that are quite different from the original material. The principal products of coal carbonization or distillation are coke and gas. These products, as well as others of which lower yields are obtained (light oil, tar, and ammonia), occupy an important place in present-day commerce and civilization. This paper is concerned with the composition of the tar and light oil, which, as complex mixtures of organic compounds, are the source of many important dyes, inter-mediates, medicinals, resins, etc. The volatile products obtained when bituminous coals are destructively distilled or carbonized are tar, aqueous liquor, and gas. These products vary in composition and properties, depending on the nature of the coal and the temperature and conditions of carbonization. The tar is a dark, rather thick and viscous liquid at ordinary temperatures, becoming semisolid when cooled to the freezing point of water. The aqueous liquor (chiefly water) contains several inorganic substances and certain organic compounds, which, because of their solubility characteristics, have been extracted from the tar. The carbonization gases consist chiefly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, ethane, ethylene, and several hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight. The hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight (benzene, toluene, xylene, etc.) may be re-moved as liquids from the gas by suitable means. This liquid and the first fractions obtained on distilling the tar are known as light oil.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Modelling of pyrometallurgical processes can become extremely challenging when the process involves complex chemical reactions, phase change, multiphase flows, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow. Traditionally modelling involving complex thermodynamic equilibrium and thermochemistry are treated separately from problems in which transport phenomena are dominant, such as CFD and heat transfer studies. The separation is also necessary due to the lack of modelling tools that can effectively couple both solution thermodynamic and transport phenomena or even multiphysics problems. However, there are, quite often, problems in high temperature process metallurgy in which it is not possible to simplify this two modelling approaches. Typical cases of this are for example, the modelling of slag freezing on furnace walls (electric or flash furnaces) to create a protective layer in front of the refractories hot wall, the formation of build up from the matte or metal phases at the hearth of the furnace, calcine smelting from charging piles into slag phase, etc. The problem is even more challenging in nonferrous pyrometallurgy as most, if not all, of the condense phases are highly non ideal solutions involving several components and exhibiting complex crystallization paths and miscibility gaps, such as the Fe-Ni-Cu-S matte, FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2, FeO-MgO-SiO2 slags, etc. In this paper, an approach to model coupled problems involving multiphysics and solution thermodynamic is presented. The approach consists in developing in-house a library containing the Gibbs energy minimization routines and using the local equilibrium concept for process modelling from a multiphysics commercial software (COMSOL). Simple test cases, such as building a non-ideal binary phase diagram on a CFD package is presented, the limitations and of other classic approaches such as equilibrium or Scheil cooling are discussed and compared to this model.

"It has been nearly eight years since rare-earth elements (REE) became the subject of frontpage headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomized in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al., 2016c; Mancheri, 2015).The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries such as the United States that was, and still is, totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand, and the Chinese sovereignty of the REEmarket on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016).The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly in late 2017 and were in six-year lows, before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REEmarket entrants (Barakos et al., 2016b; Rollat et al., 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China have impelled REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation process of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Worldwide minerals exploration slipped in 1992 from 1991 levels. Although industrial production figures showed the US economy emerging from recession in early 1992, it was not until February 1993 that the lagging indicator of unemployment dropped to 7%. Most other industrialized countries are still in recession. Preliminary data for 1992 showed industrial production dropping in Japan (5%), Germany (1.4%), the United Kingdom (0.5%) and France (1.4%). The slowdown in industrial production led to reduced mineral demand. This resulted in lean cash flows from mining operations, which squeezed exploration funding. Although mineral prices were steady during most of 1992, some mineral commodity prices began falling in late 1992 and early this year. Exploration 1991-1992 According to Metals Economics Group (MEG), planned 1992 exploration expenditures were down by about 5%. Geographically, the leading exploration target was the United States with 21 % of the expenditures, followed by Australia (19%), Canada (18%), Latin America (15%), South Africa (9%) and the western Pacific (7.5%). The remaining 10% was split between Europe and Africa. There were absolute increases in exploration expenditures in the United States and Latin America. Latin America showed the largest increase. The change in the Mexican mining law allowing foreign ownership of mines should result in the inflow of direct foreign investment in Mexico's mining industry.

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining. At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H. Woodward, formed the Woodward Iron Co. in 1881 and purchased a tract of land midway between the ore vein on the southeast and the coal field on the northeast about 12 miles southeast of Birmingham for the

Electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, which can be considered as a by-product of the steel recycling process, contains significant quantities of recoverable zinc and iron, as well as hazardous elements such as cadmium, lead and chromium, which can be leached by ground water. The zinc in the EAF dust is found almost entirely in the form of either zinc oxide or zinc ferrite, the latter accounting for 20 to 50 percent of the total zinc. It is important that an efficient process be developed which renders the dust inert, while reclaiming the valuable metals to off-set processing costs. During the conventional carbothermic reduction processes, iron is formed, and this iron can participate in the reduction of the zinc oxide in zinc ferrite. In the present work, the reduction of the zinc oxide in zinc ferrite by iron according to the following reaction: ZnO-Fe2O3(s,s) + 2 Fe(s) = Zn(g) + 4 FeO(s) was studied in an argon atmosphere using a thennogravimetric technique. First, a thermodynamic analysis was performed using the F*A*C*T computational system. Then, the effects of briquette aspect ratio (lid), temperature, zinc ferrite particle size, amount of iron added, as well as additions such as lime, sodium chloride, and calcium fluoride were investigated. It was found that, initially, the reaction was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 178.1 kJ/mol. Then, after a product layer had formed on the outer surface of the briquette, the reaction was restricted by the diffusion of zinc gas away from the reaction interface. The parabolic rate law was fitted to the experimental data, and the parabolic rate constant was found to be: = -6.2275 + 0.0054 T (K)

This Bureau of Mines report reviews and assesses the technology for preparing electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals from molten alkali metal cyanide baths. Methods are described for the preparation and purification of the cyanide electrolyte. Vacuum drying, fusion, and purity of the cyanide salts are discussed. Use of a sodium borosilicate test tube as a sodium-ion-conducting membrane for the addition of the desired platinum-group metal is described. The optimum plating parameters of potential and current density for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir coatings that result in the best deposits are given. A method for producing platinum-rhodium alloy coatings of predetermined composition is also described. The importance of careful substrate surface preparation is illustrated. While problems still remain with respect to coating porosity, careful application of the methods described permits the preparation of adherent, coherent electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals.

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14,000 kPa (2,000 psi) were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room-and-pillar mines so that a Substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction because of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal-crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the coal-crete pillar system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

"Silicon components containing transistor circuitry are at the heart of electronic products such as computers, mobile phones, etc. These components are connected to printed circuit boards (PCB's) using solder material that acts as the conductor for both electricity and heat. During the lifetime of a product it will undergo many thermal cycles where the chip becomes hot during product operation and then cools when the product is switched off. At the product design stage engineers undertake thermo-mechanical simulations to predict the thermal stress in the solder joints due to this thermal cycle and to ensure that the stress magnitude will not result in early fatigue-type failure. The design engineer's aim is to identify component parameters which ensure that the solder will survive beyond a certain number of thermal cycles.The aim of integrating computational mechanics and optimization tools together is to speed up dramatically the design process. From viewpoint of a design engineer in the electronics manufacturing sector, these tools can be used to quickly estimate key design parameters (i.e. material properties, product dimensions, etc) that will guarantee the required product performance. In this paper a modeling approach coupling computational mechanics techniques with numerical optimization is presented and demonstrated. The integrated modeling framework is obtained by coupling the multi-physics framework - PHYSICA - with the design optimisation tool- VisuaLDOC. Thermo-mechanical simulations are presented that predict the creep strains in solder material. Different numerical optimization procedures: Direct and Response Surface based optimization plus Design of Experiments, are tested as a part of this modeling framework."

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

All technical facilities of the Bureau of Mines have been geared for more efficient use and conservation of mining equipment, developing plans for safety, improving the quality of coal through better methods of preparation, studying the problems of coal storage and utilization, and extending the uses of coal5/ for the war and postwar economy. The Bureau is now analyzing all of the coal purchased by the Army and much of that required by the Navy. Work on boiler feed water was doubled over last year to meet the increased demand made by the War Department for protecting vital boiler plants in many new camps and defense plants. Progress has been made in safely storing coal to reduce dangers of spontaneous ignition to a minimum and to preserve coking power. Mixtures of oil and coal to be used as a substitute fuel have been investigated. "This paper discusses the approach followed for the geotechnical design of 355 mm and 457 mm diameter driven open-ended steel pipe piles used for a gas plant at a green field site in Pilbara region in Australia. The principal bearing layer at the site comprises of calcareous Red Bed soils and weak rock, which is the typical geology along a significant length of the northern Western Australian coastline with carbonate content up to 70%. The uncertainty associated with the mechanical behavior of the calcareous soils and cemented soils (weak rocks) presented design challenges in the selection of appropriate pile design method and design parameters for pile capacity estimation during Front End Engineering Design (FEED). The American Petroleum Institute (API)-based design methodology was adopted. The representative design parameters for the Red Bed weak rock were established by treating the weak rock as clay with undrained shear strength as one-half of the characteristic unconfined compressive strength (UCS) value. Both statically load tested and CAPWAP (Case Pile Analysis Wave Program) estimated ultimate axial pile capacities on 25 early pre-production indicator piles demonstrated that the API design methodology for siliceous soils provides reasonable prediction of axial pile capacity in the red bed soils/weak rock and no reduction to API computed axial capacity due to carbonate content is warranted. The results also demonstrated that penalizing axial pile capacity solely based on carbonate content is not appropriate.IntroductionA gas processing facility was proposed to commercialize the gas reserves located 130 km offshore from the north-west coast of Western Australia (WA). The project site is a green field site located in the Pilbara region along the northwest coast of WA. Specific information regarding the site has been withheld due to confidentiality reasons. The site layout is shown in Figure 1.The site comprises low-lying tidal flats, clay pans and sand dunes covered with low scrub. The onshore site levels vary from elevation 1 m to 10 m AHD (Australian Height Datum), with the largest proportion of the area (excluding sand dunes) between elevations of 1 m and 3 m.The onshore facilities are to comprise a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant site, a construction camp, the land-based portion of the materials offloading facility (MOF), roadways, and borrow pit areas.The existing ground levels within the process train area, where pile load testing was performed, vary from over 7 m AHD where the summits and peaks of the central dune exist to typically 1 m to 2 m AHD towards the east and west edges of the dune. The proposed finished grade for the process train is set at 7 m AHD."
