"Falconbridge Copper's Lac Shortt gold mine is located in northern Quebec approximately 300 km northeast of Val D'Or and 100 km west of Chibougamau (Pig. 1). Engineering for the mill commenced in early 1983 with a feasibility study. The plant was commissioned in the fall of 1984 at a capital cost of approximately $12 million. Design capacity was 750 tpd which was increased in the fall of 1985 to the current level of 1200 tpd.The ore at Lac Shortt is free milling, grading an average of 5.5 g/t gold which is finely disseminated throughout the host rock. Pyrite at 3 to 5% by volume and traces of copper mineralization are also present.Some of the latest gold processing techniques known at the time of design were incorporated into the mill. These include carbon-in-pulp, pressure stripping, electrowinning of pregnant solution and induction furnace refining. The plant also features several innovations such as a unique interstage carbon retention screen in the CIP circuit and the outdoor location of the cyanidation feed thickener, mill solution tank and reagent storage silos despite -40° Celsius winter temperatures.This paper describes the current mill process and discusses some of the problems encountered during the first two years of the plant's operation. CRUSHINGThe Lac Shortt surface crushing facilities are located in a separate building, isolated from the wet processing circuits for dust and noise control reasons. The crushing plant equipment was originally utilized at the Manibridge operation in northern Manitoba where it had been designed to operate at 135 tph. However, at Lac Shortt a rate of only 80 tph has been achievable to date, mainly due to the hardness and frequently slabby breakage characteristics of the ore. Therefore, in order to meet fine ore requirements at the current mill throughput of 1200 tpd, the crushing circuit is run seven days a week. 24 hours a day. Availability has been averaging 65%."

"1. INTRODUCTION Grade separation of roads and railway tracks is an effective method for solving traffic-related issues in cities. However, in urban areas where the existing traffic infrastructure is already overcrowded, construction of new roads often faces problems especially in the proximity of existing structures. This paper summarizes the construction plan and results of new road tunnel construction in the proximity of the piers of elevated tracks on the Tokaido Shinkansen railway.2. SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION AND ISSUES Auxiliary Route No. 26 as specified in the Tokyo urban plan is a project by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, covering the construction of a new road with a total length of 22.3 km currently on the way to completion. In Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, Auxiliary Route No. 26 is designed to cross the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, so for this project, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) was commissioned to design and build a road crossing under the railway tracks (Sumiyoshi Underpass). Figures 1 through 3 show a sketch of the Sumiyoshi Underpass. The Sumiyoshi Underpass was planned as a two-lane tunnel for vehicles, which was to cross under the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line at an angle of 70 degrees. The structure concerned is a single-story single-span box culvert structure with the following dimensions: 11.5 m wide, 7.7 m high and 31.6 m long. The Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks were constructed on a girder-type elevated bridge built in the 1960s, and the foundation piles of the piers (P7 and P8) in the proximity of this crossing box culvert of RC structure were constructed using an earth drill method. The crossing structure for this project is located extremely close to the piers of the Tokaido Shinkansen railway tracks, with a minimal separation of 0.4 m, and the most significant issue of this project was construction in a manner that would not obstruct the normal operations of the Tokaido Shinkansen (Figure 4). Initially, we considered installing a temporary earth retaining structure in the proximity of the piers, cutting the ground and building an RC box, but concluded that it would be very difficult to apply this method because of probable excessive displacements in the Shinkansen railway piers. That is why we decided on the use of a non-open cut method in order to minimize the impact on the piers."

In non-ferrous metallurgy the service life of refractory materials typically ranges from several weeks up to three years or more and is strongly dependent on operating conditions. To support our customers with the most viable refractory solution for their needs RHI Magnesita follows a structured approach of thermo-chemical calculations, experimental evaluation from lab scale up to industrial field tests and post-mortem analysis of used refractory materials. This paper will give an overview of the RHI Magnesita refractory selection process and the most recent developments of the experimental setup for the so called HF-IF test. This is a dynamic corrosion test that allows to determine fundamental properties of different refractory material types under process conditions subjected with respective customers process materials. The HF-IF experimental procedure is an excellent tool to simulate refractory wear in industrial processes, diminishing risks associated with plant trials and support decision making to choose the optimal refractory solution for the customer.

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension was excavated at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM). At its shallowest point, tunnel cover to bottom of Domestic Terminal footings was limited to 6 feet in soft ground. To mitigate risk of excessive building movement due to tunneling-related activities, the columns near the alignment were directly underpinned. Underpinning was accomplished using a combination of grouted mini-piles, installed under low headroom conditions, that supported steel framing spanning over the tunnel excavations. This paper focuses on design and construction of the underpinning system used to mitigate risk from tunneling.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. Geologic conditions in eight northern operating sections of Jane Mine, Keystone Coal Mining Complex. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania are defined by utilizing drillhole data and underground geologic mapping. Three of the eight sections are experiencing difficult mining conditions in the Shelocta "0" coal seam (formerly the Lower Freeport). The five remaining productive sections will exhaust their reserves within one year. Coordinating mine planning with future production levels is aided by indicating areas that appear favorable and lack the geologic conditions that cause difficult mining. Roof rock 1 ithologies, lithologic variations in and below the floor, jointing, overburden thickness, coal splits, paleochannels. and clay veins are the principal geologic factors believed to influence mining conditions in Jane Mine. Careful definition of each cause allows for a reasonable assessment of future mining conditions.

In Japan, pile foundations have been used extensively for buildings, bridges and port facilities. A large number of steel pipe piles were first used in the 1960's and the amount of steel used in foundations increased by 1973 to one million tons. This report describes current practice in the actual use of large diameter and long steel pipe piles in Japan, related to their performance: including consideration of pile size, hammer types used for driving the results of field tests measuring stress occurring in the piles and the driving formulae currently being used in practice in Japan.

The material presented in this chapter is a review of the work done during the period from June 23, 1972 to June 22, 1973 which was reported in detail in the first annual report for Grant No. 60122088 which was submitted on June 29, 1973. This report has appeared in the National Technical Information Service as bulletin number PB230 972/AS. 1.2 ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS OF INDUCED VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable, although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available from either handbooks or the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to present the results of the derivation of the inductance matrix and a few intermediate steps.

This report describes the redesign, development and field demonstration of a remote shotcrete lining system, capable of operating in shafts and mines from 8 to 16 feet in diameter at depths up to 1000 feet. The original contractural scope of work outlining problems and remedial measures associated with a previous unit proved inadequate. Significant additional effort was necessary in order to fulfill the project objectives of producing a functionally reliable remote shotcrete lining system. Included with the engineering and technical description of the system, is a comprehensive technology package. Included with this material is ancillary equipment, materials selection procedures, mix-design data, quality control and assurance program, selection and training of personnel and the organizational aspects required to operate the entire system. The report concludes with details of a successfully completed borehole lining operation at the Nevada Test Site. An irregular 104 inch diameter borehole was lined at a rate of 4.8 feet per hour and 20 feet per hour respectively for 8-9 inch and a 2 to 3 inch shotcrete thickness.

The development of a laboratory and pilot-scale high-tension electrostatic flowsheet for the production of iron-ore super concentrates having silica contents in the range of 0.1% is presented, A variety of hematite and magnetite ores were tested with this flowsheet, and the pertinent metallurgical data are given. The applications and limitations of this process are brought out in terms of both practical and theoretical considerations. There have been many new developments in the past few years that have required mineral beneficiation engineers to consider new techniques for iron-ore concentration. Developments in iron powder metallurgy, and particularly the making of sheet metal directly from high-purity iron-ore concentrates, and the concept of using metallized pellets as a substitute for scrap in electric-furnace steelmaking have created demands for what is commonly referred to as iron-ore superconcen-trates. In most cases, specifications for superconcentrates are that they contain less than 0.1% total gangue, with some applications requiring less than 0.05% gangue. To produce these concentrates, new and modified processes are being developed, and the three methods receiving attention as the primary concentrating methods are: 1) Magnetic separation in which dry rotor-type equipment is used for magnetite and the high-intensity magnets are used for hematite. 2) Amine flotation. 3) "High-tension" electrostatic separation (or, elec-trodynamic concentration). This paper examines the high-tension electrostatic process in terms of its limitations and abilities for the production of iron-ore superconcentrates. A technically effective and simple flowsheet was developed through laboratory and 5 and 100-ton pilot-plant studies for the production of concentrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% SiO, with iron recoveries between 85 and 90%. The process is also shown to be economically feasible. Laboratory Test Program Separation Characteristics: The suitability of the electrostatic high-tension method for iron-ore supercon-centration stems from the fundamental mechanism governing the process, i.e., particles are separated on the basis of differences in electrical conductivities. This conductivity is a characteristic property of minerals, and if the difference between the conductivities of two min- erals is great enough, then their separation can be performed by a high-tension machine. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the critical factor is the time necessary for the particle charge density, which is established by a corona discharge field, to decay to a level such that the centrifugal force acting on the particle exceeds its electrostatic, or image, force. At this point, the particle can leave the rotor at some trajectory and fall into an appropriate product receptacle. This decay time is directly proportional to electrical conductivity, and the process variables, such as feed rate, rotor speed, electrode configuration, and rotor composition, are selected to optimize the ability of the separator to resolve different conductivities. Table 1 lists the measured conductivities for some of the iron and gangue minerals used in developing the flowsheet. These results were obtained by using the conductivity cell described by Lawver and Wright.' Many of the fatal accidents in coal mines have resulted from the Explosives used in Use of explosives for breaking down the coal. These accidents have resulted both from the use of explo- sives that were not suitable and from the careless or improper use of suitable explosives. Investigation has shown that one of the commonest causes of dis- astrous explosions in the coal mines in this country has been a blown- out shot of black blasting powder or dynamite. The dangers that attend the use of these explosives were perceived several years ago, and in consequence the attention of powder manufacturers was directed to the production of explosives that would be less liable to ignite inflammable gas or dust. The manufacturers have been so successful in their efforts that it is now possible to obtain explosives which yield much shorter and quicker flames than black blasting powder or dynamite, and hence are much less dangerous to use in fiery or dusty coal mines. of explosives. To find out which of the many grades of short-flame explosives Government tests have the qualities that render an explosive most effective and least dangerous for mining coal, the United States Government established a testing station at Pitts- burgh, Pa., in 1908. This station is now under the charge of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before the station was opened a state- ment of the requirements that the explosives in question would have to satisfy was drawn up and sent to manufacturers. A number of these sent explosives to be tested, and on May 15, 1909, a list of the explosives that had passed the tests was published. Since that date other brands of explosives have been tested and three more lists have been issued. The latest list, published in Miners' Cir- cular 2, Bureau of Mines, contained the names of no less than 71 explosives that had passed the tests prior to January 1, 1911.

To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

Various types of contemporary Deep Mixing Method (DMM) techniques have been used in the United States since 1986. Such techniques owe their origins to Japanese and Scandinavian developments, which began almost three decades ago. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation have created a very active and rapidly expanding market demand in the United States especially since the early 1990s, and there is a clear need for a new and fundamental review of the surprisingly large number of DMM techniques that are being used domestically, or are available in other parts of the world. Following a summary tracing the historical development of DMM, and a generic classification of applications, the paper provides a review of each of the many different proprietary methods, which the authors have identified during preparation of an international survey funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Data are also provided on commercial aspects of the various DMM techniques worldwide.

An artificial standard material has been developed and used to examine the robustness of some of the procedures for correcting stereological bias. Different mineral liberation distributions were constructed from the standard material. The particles were mounted, sectioned and the sectioning data measured with an electron microscope interfaced to an image analyser. Four correction procedures were used and the corrected and true liberation distributions compared. It was found that the large-sections correction provided a simple, uncorrupted correction. Hill's fast approximation performed well except in cases of narrow liberation distributions; the sectioning data appeared to support the assumption that the locked section and locked particle distributions are identical. Barbery's correction performed well in most cases, having difficulty only with the very irregular liberation distribution. The PARGEN correction was able to provide a good estimate of the true amount of free material, but had difficulty in predicting the locked particle distribution

"It is accepted widely that pressure oxidation (POX) is the most appropriate technology for processing of arsenic containing refractory gold ores. However, studies on the stability of various iron-arsenic precipitates formed during POX are limited. Since the behaviour of these phases could have significant practical implications for gold processing plants, it is important to study them in isolation. This paper compares two synthetic precipitates, basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) and basic ferric sulphate (BFS) in terms of their formation, behaviour during hot curing and cyanidation, as well as their environmental stability. BFS and BFAS were synthesised hydrothermally at 205°C and their mineralogy was confirmed using various techniques. During synthesis, the addition of H3AsO4 into an aqueous Fe2(SO4)3-H2SO4 mixture significantly decreased the iron yield to BFAS in comparison to BFS under equimolar initial iron and acid concentrations. The BFAS dissolution kinetics was slightly faster, as compared to BFS, during subsequent hot curing. Cyanidation test work on the washed synthetic precipitates indicated that the lime consumption of BFAS was three times lower in comparison to BFS, while cyanide consumptions were comparable. Fresh BFS and BFAS precipitates, as well as their cyanidation residues, were found to pass the respective environmental tests in terms of arsenic release.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is generally viewed as the most appropriate technology for the processing of arsenic-containing refractory gold ores due to the stabilisation of arsenic in the leach residue (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008; Harris, 2003; Collins, Berezowsky, & Weir, 1988). Detailed laboratory studies indicated that several Fe(III)-arsenate type compounds may be formed under typical conditions of autoclave treatment of refractory gold ores (Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2010; Gomez, Becze, Cutler, & Demopoulos, 2011). The basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) phase (Gomez et al., 2008), also known as Type II ferric arsenate (Swash & Monhemius, 1994) or Phase 3 (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007), is one of the most common arsenic-bearing products (Harris, 2003; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007). BFAS precipitation is viewed as one of the best routes for arsenic stabilisation and performed equally well to scorodite during environmental stability tests (Harris, 2003; Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2011)."

CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. The appearance of the surface of the copper when cooled is considered as to its "pitch," or the general contour of the surface, and the "set," or the decail appearance of the surface of the shape. The set of the copper is, in a very large measure, directly related to the pitch; and so intimately are these characteristics connected that they are often used as synonymous terms by the refiner when he is speaking of well-refined copper. Oxygen is often spoken of as a medicine for copper, it being used to regulate the pitch.

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.
