The oxidation of sulfides is a complex process involving gaseous products and intermediate species given rise to emission and absorption spectra which carry out important information about the reaction process. This information could be used for on line monitoring of pyrometallurgical reactor if the appropriate sensors were available. We present in this paper an analysis of the concept that has been successfully applied in iron and steel making industry, as well on fuel combustion control, where the spectra measurement gives the possibility for online monitoring and automatic control of high temperature processes. This concept has not been widely applied in the nonferrous pyrometallurgical primary production. The design of new sensors is discussed from the analysis of spectra measurements during flash combustion of copper concentrates at laboratory scale.

Three trials with oxygen-enriched unheated blast air are described. The trials were conducted in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace located in Bruceton, PA. The first trial utilized moisture addition to the oxygenated blast. The second and third trial were conducted with natural gas injection. The test was basically a feasibility study and in that regard the practice was demonstrated to be feasible and also have possible advantages over hot blast operation. The testwork was conducted in 1964 and 1965 as part of a continuing study of iron making technology in cooperation with several North American Steel Companies.

I hope that after the long evening and all the exercise that some of you took you won't be completely exhausted to listen to a little bit about pile testing. The topic that 1 have been given is pile testing. It seems to me useful to break this topic into some smaller pieces so that we can try and organize our thought a bit. As I understand the terms "pile testing", I believe we are really referring always to capacity, one way or another, so I am suggesting that we organize the things we are doing in terms of measurement of soil capacity and pile capacity. There are obviously two failure modes and we frequently speak of pile integrity rather than structural pile capacity, but it's really capacity that we are concerned about. Further within these breakdowns I am suggesting that we might look at the topic of soil capacity in terms of static methods and dynamic methods and, finally, within each one of these, measurements of axial capacity and measurement of lateral capacity. Also here some of these subdivisions might be there for the purpose of symmetry and finally the same sorts of breakdown in Pile Capacity area.

Phase equilibria have been determined experimentally for pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-(CaO+MgO)-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.17 and MgO/CaO weight ratios of 0.25 and 0.17 respectively for temperatures in the range 1473-1673 K. The primary phase fields present for the MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.17 include manganosite (Mn,Mg,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate a-2(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2; merwinite 3CaO·(Mg,Mn)O·2SiO2; wollastonite [(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2]; diopside [(CaO,MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?SiO2]; tridymite (SiO2); tephroite [2(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2]; rhodonite [(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2] and melilite [2CaO?(MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?2(SiO2,Al2O3)]. For the section with MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.25 the anorthite phase (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) is also present. The liquidus temperatures of ferro- and silico-manganese smelting slags have been determined. The liquidus temperatures at low MnO concentrations are shown to be principally dependent on the modified basicity weight ratio (CaO+MgO)/(SiO2+Al2O3).

"Probably the only thing that can he said about conveyor belt scales without fear of contradiction is that they have been responsible for as much or more puzzlement, argument and frustration than almost any other piece of equipment commonly found in ore processing facilities. To be sure, there are certainly a good number of satisfactory installations, some of these having been achieved through forethought and careful consideration in the early stages of plant design, while others seem to owl their success to what seems to be little more than good luck or white witchcraft; and it might also appear that black witchcraft or other gremlins are solely responsible for the poor performance of many belt scales that enjoy well-designed installations with apparently good operating conditions.This paper is intended to acquaint users with the major operational reasons why belt scales seem so fickle (and downright ornery too), and establish some reasonably simple test standards against which the performance of scale hardware can be measured. Then it shall be shown how the design flexibility of electronic scale systems can offer particular advantages in overcoming some of these everyday problems in a practical way, and without undue inconvenience to plant operations."

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. The addition of copper sulfate to mineral slurries in order to ?activate? sulfide mineral surfaces for enhanced collector molecule adsorption, and hence enhanced recovery via flotation, is a com-mon mineral processing practice. It has been established in a laboratory situation that the addition of CuSO4 in conjunction with xanthate collector increases the flotation rate of pentlandite as compared to the addition of collector alone. However, it remains unclear whether the addition of CuSO4has a similar effect within mineral processing circuits. We examine here the effect of pre-activation oxidation on the copper activation of pentlandite and monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite. All activation experiments were carried out at pH 9 using a total solution content of copper ions equivalent to one monolayer (0.210 -4 moles, 110-4M). Copper loss from solution was extremely rapid in all cases with less than 10 % remaining after 10s. EDTA extraction and solution analysis clearly demonstrated that copper activation was via direct surface adsorption and not an ion exchange process, as is the case for sphalerite, and that most copper on the surfaces is in the form of Cu(I). ToF-SIMS analyses of the mineral surfaces subsequent to copper activation show increased surface oxidation on increased conditioning time prior to copper activation. However, there is a significant decrease in surface oxidation on comparison of samples that have otherwise been prepared in the same manner but where one has been exposed to copper solution rather than water. This suggests that copper activation stabilises the surface and reduces the propensity for oxidation. Regardless of the length of pre-activation oxidation time only Fe(III) (no Fe(II)-S) was observed by XPS analysis, indicating a highly oxidised surface layer dominated by Fe-O-OH species. The presence of Cu(II) on the mineral surface is indicative of the formation of Cu(II)-containing precipitates and indicates non-mineral specific activation resulting in increased recovery but lower grade. Mineral specific copper adsorption, as evidenced by the presence of Cu(I), is required to improve both grade and recovery. Prolonged oxidation prior to copper activation causes a reduction in the Cu(I) to Cu(II) ratio on the mineral surfaces as compared to either fresh surfaces or surfaces oxidised for 1 minute only. This strongly indicates that the copper activation process is less effective on highly oxidised surfaces.

The Brightwater regional wastewater treatment facility, under construction in King County, WA, includes an extensive conveyance system that will feature deep, soft-ground tunnels and shafts. Excavation of the Ballinger Way Receiving Portal to 65.8 m (216 ft) below grade through challenging geology was accomplished by means of artificial ground freezing. This paper discusses freeze design development, system installation and monitoring, and the contractual and construction challenges that were overcome, including work sequencing and excavation means and methods, together with lessons learned.

ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

"Finely disseminated minerals in ores require intensive size reduction to achieve sufficient liberation for the subsequent concentration process. The use of small grinding media in conventional ball mills as a replacement for the usual 2.5 to 3.8 cm balls (1.0 to 1.5 in) produces a finer size distribution at a lower power drawn by the mill motor. However, the conditions ensuring a successful application of using small media for fine grinding are still not fully understood and some plants faced issues to keep the newly introduced steel charge inside the mill during industrial trials. The retention conditions of small media are investigated in this paper using a continuously operated 40 x 40 cm laboratory grinding mill. The tests assess the effect of the steel charge level, the slurry solids concentration and the feed rate on the rate of ejection of the grinding media. The dominant variable is found to be the filling of the mill with the grinding media, followed by the mill feed rate. Results show that increasing the slurry solids concentration within a grinding mill may be favorable for the retention of the media inside the mill.IntroductionProcessing of complex ores often requires the use of fine grinding to liberate finely disseminated minerals. Grinding requirements for a P80 of less than 0.02 mm are not uncommon, and different grinding mills are available for such application (Leonida, 2014; Pease et al., 2006; Davey, 2006; Orford et al., 2006; Nesset et al., 2006). Even conventional horizontal ball mills charged with of 2.5 cm or larger grinding media can be used for fine grinding. However, simulation (Orford and al., 2006) and plant observations (Alves and L-Bouchet, 2005; Brisette, 2010; Brisette and Roman, 2012) demonstrated the advantages of using smaller grinding media in terms of size reduction and energy consumption."

IRON ore and bituminous coal are the two basic raw materials for the whole iron and steel industry. The ore furnishes the iron and is absolutely necessary-all iron and steel products come directly or in- directly from the iron ores. The bituminous coal furnishes the carbon needed for the smelting of the ores and for the fuel used in all the processes of iron and steel manufacture. The necessary carbon could be furnished in some other form besides bituminous coal. In fact, it is only since the Civil War that bituminous coal has been the chief source of the carbon for metallurgical fuel. For many years only charcoal made from the forests furnished the carbon for smelting iron ores. About 90 years ago, anthracite coal was first used as blast-furnace fuel and for many years continued to be the chief blast furnace and steel making source for carbon. Even in my own blast-furnace experience, I have used charcoal in Canada and anthracite in Pennsylvania for smelting ores in an iron blast furnace. Bituminous coal, now almost exclusively the source for the carbon used in smelting iron ores, also furnishes most of the heat used in the steel-making processes. It is seldom used in blast furnaces in its natural condition, hut is first coked in beehive, or in by-product coke ovens; such bituminous coal is called "coking coal." Bituminous coal that is suitable for making the producer gas used in the open-hearth steel process is called gas coal. Any bituminous coals suitable for making blast-furnace coke or foundry coke, or that can be satisfactorily used for making producer gas, are classed as metallurgical coals and as such are to be considered in my proposed plan for the evaluation of metallurgical coals. According to Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 449 these coals comprised 22 per cent of the bituminous coals mined in this country in 1923.

The relationship between the geology of porphyry copper deposits and their processing performance is an area of interest. Being able to predict comminution properties of the ore from physical characteristics and geological descriptions would allow an increase in the precision of capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates and throughput rates. This geometallurgical approach would reduce the requirements for expensive comminution tests.As the comminution circuit is the highest capital cost item in the plant and a possible throughput bottleneck, understanding the variability in hardness within the orebody is critical. A geometallurgical model allows calculation of ore hardness values in mining blocks from ore characterisation data. This model subsequently uses a combination of simulation and power-based approaches to relate ore hardness and flotation feed size to grinding circuit throughput.This paper reviews the geometallurgical models developed for seven porphyry copper deposits and discusses the strengths and shortfalls of the methodology and similarities and differences between the different deposits.CITATION:Harbort, G J, Lam, K and Sola, C, 2013. "INTRODUCTION The Friedensville district was one of the most important zinc-producing areas in the United States from 1859 to 1893. The ore minerals near the surface were principally calamine and smithsonite, but with depth sphalerite was found in increasing proportions. The ore bodies of the district are reported to have been in chimneys, occurring in folded and faulted beds of Beekmantown limestone of Ordovician age.The Correll was one of five mines near Friedensyille that were exten¬sively exploited. The high-grade ore shoots were mined to a depth of several hundred feet, but it is believed that inability to compete with lower-cost production elsewhere, rather than exhaustion of the ore bodies, compelled the mines to close.There is no record to indicate that any attempt was made during the period of operation to explore for additional ore in the limestone beds down the dip below the mine workings. The possibility that exploration might reveal additional ore in the limestone beds below the known ore shoots led the Bureau of Mines to diamond-drill the Correll property between September 1943 and January 1944."

Introduction Kootenay strata of Lower Cretaceous age contain much of the highest rank coal produced in Alberta. These strata outcrop in the foothills and mountains of southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, and the economic value of the coal seams contained in them was evident to the earliest explorers, who refer co them in their journals. Lacer, investigation of the .coal measures was undertaken by prospectors and by a succession of geologists, most of whom were in the employ of the Federal government, but some acted for private interests. Surveys by these men proved chat foothills and mountain regions hold immense quantities of high-grade coal within easy reach of transportation facilities, and their conclusions have accelerated the development of the coal-mining industry m Alberta. Among geologists who have contributed much to our knowledge of the region are J. M. Dawson, G. M. Dawson, R. C. McConnell, D. B. Dowling, J. D. Mackenzie, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. R. McKay, J. A. Allan, and J. L. Carr. The present paper is to a great extent a compilation of the work of the above men and of several others who have investigated the area lying between Bow river and Crowsnest pass. Space does not permit a list of all the sources of information so chat only chose of prime importance are given in the text. Data for the map and ?cross-sections of Figure 1 were taken from the following published maps of the Geological Survey of Canada: Cascade Coal Basin, Pub. 933; Canmore, Maps 322 and 323; Upper Elk River and Upper Highwood Rivers, Pub. l980; Blairmore, Pub. 1584; Southfork Coal Area Map l03A; and of the Research Council of Alberta: Highwood-Elbow Area, Map 20; and Ribbon Creek Area, Map 21. In some cases, the cross-sections have been simplified or otherwise altered, and for these revisions the writer cakes full responsibility. The stratigraphic sections of Figure 2 have been taken from published reports of the above mentioned organizations. The area covered in this paper is shown in Figure l. It is wholly within Alberta, and reaches from township 5 to township 27 and from range 1 co range 11, west of the fifth meridian. Its location is about fifty miles west of both Calgary and Lethbridge. Topography of the area ranges from foothill on the east to mountainous on the west. In this paper' the foothill region is considered to be chat which lies immediately east of the most easterly mountain ranges, such as Livingstone and Highwood. There are two principal coal mining districts in the area, one served by the main line of the Canadian ?Pacific railway and centring about Canmore, the other by a branch line of che same railway and centring about Bellevue, Blairmore, and Coleman.

Many improvements in the art of underground excavation have appeared during the past two decades. These improvements have been both in methods and in machinery and have resulted in more economical construction of today's tunnels. In the realm of machines, the developments of continuous boring heads for either soft ground or rock, random arm excavators and the sliding tunnel floor (Magic Carpet) have each made contributions toward more rapid tunneling. CONTINUITY OF ADVANCE Tunnel boring machines are often referred to as "continuous excavators". Continuous advance (without cyclical interruptions) has not been achieved, however, in any of the machines now in use. In most rotary-head tunnelers the thrust needed to make the cutters bite into the face is obtained from hydraulic cylinders reacting against anchoring devices held stationary by pads which grip against the sides of the tunnel. With this system the forward motion of the cutting head is continuous only until the propelling cylinders have reached their limit of extension. At this point the grippers must be released, moved forward and reset before a new cycle of advance can be begun. Some machines are built to obtain their propelling thrust from hydraulic cylinders pushing backward against newly-installed rings of tunnel support. This is the customary method for propulsion of shields. With it, each cyclical advance or "shove" must await the erection of a new ring of supports. Faster tunnel driving

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

The Kanmantoo copper mine is located in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia and is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources (HGO). The mine is a drill and blast, truck and shovel operation mining sulfide (chalcopyrite) ore located in chloritised andalusite biotite schist. The initial Kanmantoo open pit operation occurred in the 1970s, before falling copper prices closed the mine. In 2010 the mine was reopened by HGO and the Kavanagh cutback of the Kanmantoo pit was undertaken. The Spitfire, Nugent and Emily Star satellite pits were also mined through to 2015 before the latest steep wall Giant pit design was developed to take mining out to 2019.There are no major fault structures and only two significant shear zone structures exposed in the open pit walls. The main Garnet Andalusite Biotite Schist (GABS) unit is quite competent so the pit designs have therefore mainly been controlled by four distinct joint sets. This paper is a case study on the influence of the joint regime on the wall stability of the main GABS unit and how a better understanding of the joint regime and the use of rock reinforcement has allowed the steep wall design to be adopted.The paper also describes the remote geotechnical mapping and slope monitoring techniques used to manage the rockfall risks associated with the steep walled slope design.CITATION:Hutchison, B J, Chambers, J, Gannon, S and Oko-oboh, D, 2017. "Xstrata Alloys – Eland Platinum concentrator (South Africa) has recently been commissioned and is now initiating a challenging optimisation program encompassing the entire operation. Process control improvements are key elements of the program and initial results have demonstrated how leveraging from current assets can bring significant improvements through overall reduction of variability. This paper gives a brief overview of the operations and details how Eland is striving to become a top tier leader with advanced regulatory control strategies recently implemented. Results reveal that what can be achieved in a standard control system (PLC or DCS) should not be underestimated as the first interventions led to a steadier operation of the primary ball mill circuit. Following the improvements, significant and sustained reductions of standard variation were observed for key process variables around their set-point: primary ball mill feed rate (72 %), rougher feed density (58 %), and rougher feed flow rate (47 %). A path forward has been identified to tackle further opportunities around the primary grinding circuit: water balance management, throughput optimisation as well as charge and power draw control.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous approaches to mineral processing plant optimisation. As the benefits of determining the right reagent types, mix, dosage and addition points, or the proper charge of grinding media in a mill are fully appreciated, there is still nowadays some misunderstanding and misconceptions about process control in general and how it can contribute to the whole optimisation process. The confusion between the various disciplines involved, i.e. instrumentation, control system programming, automation and process control, certainly does not serve the best interest of the industry with this regard."
