As head grades of mines around the world decline, generation of tailings is increasing. Along with the increased tailings generation, reduction in water availability, and recent tailings dame failures, are causing mining companies to look at different disposal methods. One of the methods that is gaining traction is filtered tailings. Filtered Tailings currently provides the greatest water recovery and the smallest footprint among all the tailings disposal methods. This paper will present two case studies that analyze the filter and air compressor costs associated with a change in the final cake moisture target (i.e. a change from 17-wt% to 15-wt% cake moisture), for a base metal mine and gold mine.

The stabilization of austenite in Fe-Ni alloys against martensitic transformation after reversion has been attributed' to the lattice imperfections remaining from previous transformation. More recently, however, such stabilization has been associatedzy3 with compositional changes which occur in martensite during slow heating. Dislocation arrangements in deformed austenitic stainless steels strongly influence transformation to martensite on quenching.4 Therefore, it is of interest to observe the transformation behavior of stainless steel after reversion, especially since previous studies have been confined to Fe-Ni alloys. The transformation-product morphology also differs in the two iron-alloy systems;6 plate martensite forms in the latter while stainless steel transforms to lath-type martensite. Samples of Fe-16 wt pct Cr-12 wt pct Ni (maximum C + N = 0.005 wt pct, 0 = 0.02 wt pct), prepared by vacuum melting and casting from high-purity components, were annealed at 900°C for 24 hr, after cold rolling to produce a 40-p grain diameter. The M, temperature of this alloy is -80°C and samples are fully austenitic after annealing. The amount of martensite present after quenching, annealing, and requenching was determined magnetically, to within 0.01 wt pct, using a vibrating specimen magnetometer. Nearly 14 pct of martensite forms during the initial quench in 1 min at -196°C. Two-min and 2-hr anneals were done in air and in evacuated quartz capsules, respectively. All specimens were electro-polished before making the magnetic measurements.

DIAMOND drills have played an important part in the development of mines for many years. Recently. they have also entered the production field arid the use of diamond drills m the primary breaking of ores has become a big branch of the industry. The writer has estimated roughly that the total diamond drilling in Canada during 1942 was 5,625,000 feet, of which 2,250,000 feet, or 40 per cent, was for blast-holes. This accounts for 6,750,000 tons of ore broken, using the conservative factor of 3 tons per foot of hole. Many consider that the use of diamond drills for blast-holes is the most important advance in mine practice of the past decade, and the industry owes a great deal to the staff of Noranda Mines, Limited, for the pioneering they have done in the development of long-hole mining methods and for publishing their results. A great many mines have followed Noranda's lead. At the Waite-Amulet, Aldermac, Flin Flon, Canadian Malartic, Hoyle, and Matachewan Consolidated mines, most of the ore is broken by long-hole blasting. While the mines were developing new methods, the diamond-drill industry was developing mechanically-set bits and better machines. Through the effective use o smaller, cheaper diamonds, as well as more efficient setting, bit costs per foot are only one-half what they were ten years ago. Few people realize that a diamond bit is relatively inexpensive. The common EXT coring bit, for example, contains some 200 small diamonds, weighing altogether about 2.70 carats which, at $3.40 per carat, cost $9.20. After use, the equivalent of about 100 of these diamonds may be recovered. Therefore the true cost of the bit is only $7.00, made up of $4.60, the cost of the diamonds lost, $2.00 for setting, and $0.40 tax. The trend in machines has been toward specialization for the different classes of rock in blast-hole work. Light, high-speed machines have been developed for soft ores and higher powered machines for hard ores.

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012. The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, Nos. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine suspended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. Ore Treated In the pebble phosphate district of Florida, the phosphate mineral, or collophane, is usually found in horizontal beds of varying thickness

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. This work discusses the sulfur dioxide (SO2) leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese (Mn) as manganese sulfate (MnSO4), followed by electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of the leaching process parameters on Mn recovery were studied, and the leaching duration and SO2 flow rate were found to have significant effects. Under the optimum conditions derived for grade 1 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 17.16 percent), the specific SO2 requirement (SSR) — that is, the SO2 flow rate per gram of Mn in the leach slurry — was calculated to be 0.014 L/min. At the SO2 flow rate calculated using SSR for grade 2 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 26.29 percent), a Mn recovery rate of 94 percent was realized. Electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 generated after leaching resulted in EMD with 88.01 percent purity and a γ structure.

The 2005 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention continued the upbeat mood found in 2004. The global mining industry is booming due to higher commodity prices in nearly every sector. Other factors include low commodity inventories, China’s strong resource demands, the weak U.S. dollar, the very strong Euro, global uncertainties, an almost overripe investment climate for natural resources and the highest mining exploration budgets in seven years. Even unglamorous commodities, like iron, uranium and zinc, received copious attention in talks, the investors’ exchange, the core shack and in certain hospitality suites. The following impressions were gathered at the convention and enhanced by conference handouts and some abstracts that are available on the PDAC’s Web site, www.pdac.ca. At least 119 papers were presented, almost twice last year’s number.

"Crushing and screening theory and application has remained fairly consistent in the last 50 years. The application of such equipment is guided by varied formulaic conventions and rules that due to the entropic nature of the process, remains more an art than a science. The variability of conditions creates an environment in which trial and error becomes the principal means of process balance and control. This paper illustrates some of the theories behind the process, plus other assumptions, postulates, myths and misconceptions that exist within the crushing and screening industry.INTRODUCTIONContinuous material balance calculations are habitually performed in the design of new comminution circuits as well as in the valuation of existing circuits. A continuous material balance calculation is one in which the input rate of material is equal to the output rate for each unit functioning in the circuit. At continuous analysis, there is no accumulation or losses of material within the system, as it is when performing a discrete event analysis.In order to produce viable and manageable mine-to-mill material, whether it is ready to leach or ready to mill, we must reduce the material in a series of stages. The power demand increases as the material size decreases, as it is when folding a piece of paper successively. As with the paper, there is a crushing size limitation that is a consequence of the mineral properties such as work index, moisture, viscoelasticity, etc. Comprehensive knowledge of crushing plants in both the aggregate and the mining industries show that, after three stages of crushing, a particle size distribution originating from a blasted deposit can be reduced from an nominal maximum size of 500 mm to a nominal maximum size of 12 mm. if the last stage of crushing is set in closed circuit, the screen openings will be able to yield a smaller top size.Achieving steady and continuous material balance poses major difficulties as crusher lose their settings, screens blind or peg, and material characteristics change geographically or seasonally. Overloading conditions in crushers and screens are nothing but counterproductive, and the net losses of an unbalanced circuit can be overlooked when mining operators are paying a lot more attention to the evermore complex systems downstream.It is not simply the crushing of the mineral but achieving the right size for the downstream milling process that will yield the maximum amount of energy savings."

The design of excavations in rock must, implicitly or explicitly take into consideration the influence of small- and large-scale geological structures. For most sites the complexity of a fractured rock mass is best captured using a 3D fracture system model based on field data. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves stochastic modelling of the ‘smaller scale’, nondeterministic structures. For slope stability or tunnelling projects DFN modelling provides a valuable geotechnical tool for characterisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of the DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a large open pit in Australia. The proposed pit is to encounter a 160?m thick, high strength, sheared shale unit, which overlies a crystalline basement. DFN modelling was undertaken separately for both the shale and basement units. While the model inputs and development for each unit are briefly presented, the focus of this paper is on the various applications of the DFN modelling.A key advantage of the DFN approach for design studies is its probabilistic application to structural analyses and results. Multiple realisations of the same model were generated for both the shale and basement units, with the stability analysis carried out on each iteration. The generation of a large number of DFN models and analyses allow assessment of wedge volume, factor of safety and proportion of unstable slope for a range of conditions. The DFN modelling at the case study site was also utilised for a number of other purposes. For example, investigation of likely fault lengths in the shale unit and combined rock mass and defect failure. "Pressure leaching is an option for copper recovery from chalcopyrite. Leaching takes place at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of an oxidising agent. This work shows how the performance of pressure leaching circuits may be improved by optimising the configuration of autoclaves and the heat-removal method. The objective was achieved by creating an autoclave model by combining mass balances, energy balances and population balances. A base-case circuit consisting of a single autoclave was chosen, and this base case was compared with options for increasing capacity by adding more autoclaves to the circuit. These capacity–increase options include circuits in which the additional autoclave is added in parallel, in series and in series with thickening between the two autoclaves. The copper extraction, productivity and cooling requirements for these options are compared. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening has the highest extraction and productivity, however, the cooling duty in the first autoclave is high. In addition to comparing circuit options, three options for heat removal were investigated: cooling coils, quench water and flash recycling. The flash-recycle option results in the highest copper extraction, and the quench-water option gives the lowest copper extraction. INTRODUCTION Background Copper sulfide ores and concentrates containing chalcopyrite are typically hard to leach under atmospheric conditions. Smelting of these ores may also be a challenge, due to the inability of smelting processes to handle low-grade ores, as well as impurities such as arsenic and antimony. Alternative hydrometallurgical routes to treating chalcopyrite are therefore required. One option is pressure leaching, which is the focus of this work. In the pressure leaching process, sulfide ores and concentrates are leached in autoclaves at temperatures of 200 to 220°C and a pressure of about 3000 kPa (Schlesinger et al., 2011). An oxidising agent, usually oxygen, is required to oxidise sulfide ions to sulfate ions. The oxidation of sulfur to sulfate is exothermic; consequently, a method of heat removal is necessary in order to maintain the temperature in the autoclave."

"There are a number of environmental incentives for increasing recycling, including the reduction of waste, energy and resource use. Recycling can also be advantageous for manufacturing firms in both the short and long term. Secondary material can substitute for primary material, potentially dampening primary material price increases and reducing the pressure for greater primary extraction. This paper examines the potential for and dynamics of recycling for the case of platinum using a dynamic, behavioral simulation model of the primary and secondary markets. Since the secondary supply of platinum depends on a supply chain separate from primary extraction, recycling can diversify the risks of primary supply instabilities. Over time, recycling can cut primary consumption, reduce overall costs to firms, and possibly reduce the impact of price fluctuations upon firms.IntroductionThe benefits of recycling, from the perspective of the environment, are many, and the environmental benefits of increased recycling are considered a step towards increased sustainability [1, 2]. Life cycle assessments indicate that obtaining materials from secondary sources generally requires less energy and has fewer environmental impacts than extraction and refining of primary materials [3]. Analyses of materials flows show that, in addition to landfill volume reduction, recycling reduces primary material consumption, affecting long term materials scarcity [4, 5].The benefits of recycling are not limited to the environmental. Firms can benefit from the lower energy costs of recycling, especially that of metals whose primary extraction and refining are particularly energy-intensive (e.g., aluminum). The routine participation by firms in secondary materials markets (e.g., www.recycle.net) shows that this advantage has not gone unnoticed.Recycling can also benefit firms whose costs can be significantly affected by changes in material prices resulting from material shortages and material scarcity, with potentially permanent effects upon firms [6-8]. This paper focuses on the impact of recycling in the face of platinum scarcity for supply chain downstream firms."

This paper highlights several management practices from the oil and gas industry to support the proposition that financial performance in the finite, non-renewable resource business relates more to upstream rather than downstream activities. Based on the analysis of nine oil and gas companies, this study supports a previous study involving fourteen mining companies that showed reserves growth is one of the main levers of value creation in mining. Interestingly, this study also finds that the oil and gas industry has been historically more profitable than mining. The reason, it is argued, is that oil and gas companies count on management practices that focus primarily on the upstream segments of the business, compared to the traditional downstream focus of mining. This paper delves into these ideas to conclude that what mining may need to improve its competitive advantage is a new organizational framework. Another conclusion is that the upstream management focus is vital not only for strategy formulation in the resource business, but also for policy formulation in economies based on the export of finite, non-renewable resources.

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

As part of the AMIRA P843 project Keeney and Walters (2008) describe how the principal components analysis (PCA) method can be used to identify classes of samples with similar metallurgical characteristics. However PCA does not take account of the location of each sample in 3D space. This paper describes a study to analyse the spatial distributions of the classes and determine appropriate modelling methods to control the estimation of the comminution parameters and mill performance indices into a 3D block model. This includes but is not restricted to geostatistical techniques that are used for grade modelling. The starting point for the study is the class definitions and the regression models for estimating the comminution parameters and performance indices. Each sample is assigned a class and the spatial distribution of each class has been analysed using different techniques including the calculation of variograms. This establishes whether the classes can be used as domain control for estimation into the block model – a procedure similar to using geological rock type domains for controlling the estimation of grades for a resource model. However, standard geostatistical estimation methods such as ordinary kriging assume that the variable being estimated is additive or linear. This assumption is valid for variables such as grade but this is not necessarily the case for the comminution parameters or the performance indices. Therefore the estimation procedure must either use variables that are definitely additive or the effect of potential non-additivity must be tested and accounted for where possible.The results of the study show how performance indices such as recovery, throughput and specific power can be estimated into the block model. This model is then combined with the geological model to provide a multi-parametric model that is used to optimise the mine planning and scheduling activities which can lead to significant improvements in NPV.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.
