In Part I of this work,1 equations of elasticity were formulated for transversely isotropic, axisymmetric, homogeneous, porous media exhibiting pore fluid pressure. Equations of elasticity and the thermal analogy method were used to determine transient horizontal, tangential, and vertical stresses and radial displacement in a semi-infinite cylindrical region when either a constant rate of pressure or a constant rate of flow is maintained at the wellbore. In this paper, the approach presented earlier is extended to finite reservoirs for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at the well bore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Results of this work show that radial and tangential stress gradients are high near the wellbore but diminish rapidt; away from the well; the vertical stress gradient behaves in the same way but is less severe. Radial stresses are compressive or neutral, whereas tangential and vertical stresses may be tensile, neutral or com-pressive, depending upon the boundary conditions, the physical Properties of the system and the radial distance involved (vertical stresses are always compressive in an unbounded system1. For constant boundary pressures, both radial and tangential stresses increase with time whereas they both decrease for a closed outer boundary and constant pressure at the wellbore. The vertical stress decreases with time for both systems. For steady-state systems, radial displacement may be positive or negative, depending upon the dimensions of the system, the pressure differential and the porosity. Radial displacement may be positive or negative for a closed outer boundary but is positive for constant pressures at both boundaries. INTRODUCTION The importance, utility and complexity of a realistic appraisal of the stress state at and local to a wellbore were indicated in Part I. In this paper the analytical approach presented earlier is extended to finite, cylindrical reservoir geometry for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at wellbore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Other than the outer boundary of the reservoir being finite, the physical system and assumptions pertinent thereto are the same as before. The reader may wish to review the mathematical development through Eq. 49 of Part I before proceeding here. The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. The 24th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 76 producers in 20 States reported commercial production of peat in 1957. In addition to the States that reported production in 1956, Colorado, Idaho, and Wisconsin produced peat in 1957 Forty-four producers reported humus production; 21, reed-sedge peat; and 22, moss peat production. This total exceeds the number of active plants but several producers recovered more than one type of peat. Fifty percent of the total production was reported as reed-sedge peat, 36 percent as humus, and 14 percent as moss peat. About one-sixth of the total production was raw peat, with no preparation other than being air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, and/or kiln drying.

The Silver Spring Transit Center is a new three-level transit center that will include bus loops for County, Metro and intercity buses, parking, and retail space. It replaces an existing bus station and connects to a busy metro rail station in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Significant site constraints in both plan and profile had to be dealt with in developing a design for support of the structure. Over 90 rock-socketed drilled shafts ranging in size from 3 to 7 foot in diameter were ultimately used to accommodate the limited space and large column loads, and to adapt to the variable rock surface at the site. Site access during design was limited due to the existing active bus station, so contract documents were adapted to include further explorations. Differences in anticipated and actual field conditions regarding the depth, quality, and variability of the rock had to be overcome in construction. Osterberg Load Cell testing during construction allowed for verification and optimization of the shaft design. Additional issues dealt with on this constrained site in an urban setting included construction staging issues, such as working around specialty contractors for tieback walls, blasting operations for rock excavation, productions issues for hard bedrock, as well as coordination issues with third parties, most notably the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Aspects of the foundation design and optimization, preparation of the contract documents to deal with the complicated nature of the project, and lessons learned from construction are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter's rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

The effects of pressure and cake thickness were studied using a split-plot design for pressure filtration of a fine refuse slurry obtained from a bituminous coal preparation facility. Pressure filtration offers the potential to significantly reduce the moisture content of the fine refuse stream with the addition of little to no flocculants, thereby minimizing the volume of refuse stored in impoundments and providing a recycle water stream for use within the plant. Experimental results showed that the final cake moisture decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in cake thickness. In addition, specific cake resistances calculated for the various tests indicated an increasing trend with increasing pressure and decreasing cake thickness. With increase in cake thickness, an increase in cake moisture and the weight of solids deposited in the cake was observed. An ANOVA analysis indicated that both cake thickness and pressure significantly affected the cake moisture, while only cake thickness statistically influenced the weight of solids in the cake. A regression model was developed with an R2 value of about 0.99 to relate cake thickness, the single largest statistically significant factor, with the weight of solids in the cake. Filter capacities were calculated in terms of the solids deposited per unit time based on a product specification of 25 percent cake moisture, and it was observed that the thinnest cake had the highest filter capacity.

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

This U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents results of stress analyses and field observations to investigate the effects of elevated trench drifts on the structural stability of rock mass zones surrounding a production draw drift in a mine utilizing a mechanized load-haul-dump (LHD) trench undercut panel caving system. A two-dimensional boundary-element mine stress model was developed to predict the locations and extent of damaged rock mass zones surrounding draw drifts where adjacent, parallel trench drifts are either elevated or not elevated above the LHD production draw drift level. A Mohr-Coulomb shear-failure criterion was obtained directly from in situ borehole shear test data. Hock-Brown shear-failure parameter values were computed from borehole-shear and triaxial test data. A procedure is described to estimate these parameters when a rock mass rating (RMR) value and triaxial data on intact samples exist, and no borehole shear test data exist Results indicate that trench drifts, elevated to the level equal to the height of the LHD production draw drift, would not minimize material damage nor significantly enhance the stability of rib and crown pillar zones surrounding production draw drifts in the mechanized LHD trench undercut caving panel investigated at this mine.

Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

In underground blasting, the pull of the initial cut is the limiting factor for the success of the rest of the round. By improving the pull of the first cut, a critical step is made towards improving the entire round. This project attempted to optimize a burn cut’s effective pull by varying the depths of the relief holes in the burn. The effect of varying the depths of the relief holes was investigated, including depths longer than that of the cut’s charged holes. The overall objective was to consistently achieve greater pull than in a standard burn, using an identical amount of explosives. Increased pull results in savings of both time and cost in underground heading advance.

Over the past decade the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry?s injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked, injury rate, and days lost. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992?2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent.

This paper explains the politics of mine nationalization in contemporary South Africa. Nationalization and privatization typically occur in the oil, mineral resources, and state utilities sectors, and they tend to follow one another in a long-term cyclical pattern. The paper explains why the current international environment has encouraged demands for nationalization and other forms of ?resource nationalism? in the South African minerals sector. It goes on to describe how the resurgence of resource nationalism has been influenced by internal factional politics in the African National Congress. It concludes that nationalization is unlikely to be the outcome of current policy deliberations within the ANC.

"In this paper we present the results of a combined remote sensing - numerical modelling study to improve our understanding of groundwater seepage in open pit and natural rock slopes, and to investigate the interaction between groundwater, in-situ stress conditions and brittle fracture. The location of seepage is a key element in the characterisation of rock slope stability in open pits and natural slopes; definition of the fracture network geometry and its inter-relationship with seepage, however, remains a challenge in engineering practice. Current techniques used to characterize groundwater seepage locations require direct access to the rock slope for a detailed and exhaustive investigation, and can be severely limited due to access and the limited coverage of the survey methods both with respect to the height and length of the sampled rock slope. Herein, we describe remote sensing methods, which allow the collection of structural and seepage information over a wide spatial area. Remote sensing techniques are shown to have the potential to provide additional insights into the orientation and general connectivity of fractures that may play a major role in the general stability of a rock slope. A preliminary methodology for the use of remote sensing in the characterization of seepage zones in a natural slope through the application of ground-based LiDAR and Infrared Thermography (IRT) is presented.One of the most challenging problems in rock slope engineering is the realistic simulation of fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes. Deformation and the development of brittle fractures can cause significant local changes in the permeability and strength of the rock mass, potentially affecting rock slope performance. Understanding fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes, especially in highly-stressed environments is of great importance for slope stability analysis. Changes in the interconnectivity of fractures during slope failure are an important, yet are relatively unstudied in rock slope engineering. We present the results of hydromechanical UDEC-Trigon rock slope models focussing on the potential role of brittle fracture in rock slope failure, its interaction with groundwater pressures, and the influence of the assumed in-situ stress ratio. Damage intensity parameters are used to characterize damage within different regions of a biplanar slope failure."

This report presents 900° C BM-AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of Nicholas, Randolph, and Webster Counties, W. Va. Thirty-three samples from nine coal beds in three counties were car-bonized at 900° C in the l8-inch-diameter BM-AGA retort, data from which have been correlated with industrial production. Host of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use, and their coking properties were satisfactory. Except for four of the Lower Kit-tanning samples, the ranges of constituents in the coal seams were 1.8 to 9.0 percent ash and 0.4 to 1.1 percent sulfur, values within the range of accept-ability for metallurgical coals. Coke strength indexes were normal for Appalachian coals of similar rank, and the tumbler stability indexes of the coke ranged from 35 to 57.

A current challenge faced by the mining industry is solving the integrated transition mine problem (TMP) that maximizes the net present value (NPV). This study aims to develop an optimization framework capable of solving the TMP. The problem is NP-hard and therefore computationally intractable. Three ad hoc approaches – Exact solution, Benders’ decomposition, and Benders’ decomposition with Bienstock-Zuckerberg (BZ) algorithm – are compared for different scheduling periods. The TMP is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model, implemented in Python, and solved with the Gurobi optimizer. The results showed that Bender's decomposition with the BZ algorithm outperforms the other approaches in execution time, computational cost, and feasibility to address large problems in exchange for a marginal cost in the quality of the NPV obtained. In addition, the probability of finding the optimal point of transition is higher regardless of the number of feasible crown pillar locations evaluated. This is achieved through the optimality cuts proposed in the algorithm.

The present sampling procedure for evaluating the rock dusting conditions in a coal mine is time consuming. This study considers means by which this procedure could be simplified. Surveys were conducted in six coal mines in Pennsylvania to determine the in¬combustible content of the deposited dust. Some 2,000 samples were analyzed and statistically evaluated. It is suggested that the mean incombustible content could be obtained with fewer samples and smaller samples without greatly increasing the sampling error.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation exploiting a diluted reserve of 131 million tonnes grading 1.06 per cent copper and 0.81 g/t gold in the lower portion of the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). The EESS is a calcium-magnesium silicate skarn containing in excess of 250 million tonnes of copper-gold ore, located in the Ertsberg Mining District on the crest of the Jawawijaya mountain range in the highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The EESS was discovered in 1968 where it cropped out at an elevation of 4050 metres above sea level. The Ertsberg Mining District is underlain by siliclastic carbonate and siltstone formations of Jurassic to Tertiary age. The sediments have been folded and are cut by major bedding subparallel and crosscutting structures. Intrusion of a series of igneous bodies post-dates folding and faulting. These I-type intrusions are the source for the copper-gold mineralisation found in the Ertsberg Mining District. The EESS is hosted by carbonates of the Tertiary Waripi and Faumai Formations that have been altered to calcium-magnesium silicate skarn and is situated on the southern limb of a northwest-trending syncline. The EESS is an essentially vertical tabular body with a vertical extent of at least 1200 metres and a lateral extent of up to 1000 metres. The width of the EESS averages 200 metres and locally is in excess of 300 metres. The northeast (hangingwall) contact of the EESS is a skarn reaction front in sudden contact with barren marbles. This contact coincides with a zone of localised faulting and brecciation. The EESS is bounded to the southwest (footwall) by the Ertsberg Diorite, a 3.25 Ma old intrusive. The DOZ block cave operation extends from 3040 metres above sea level to a maximum of 3388 metres above sea level, has a length of 860 metres and a maximum width of 350 metres. The DOZ is a high temperature skarn with a prograde forsterite/diopside mineralogy whose protolith is the dolomitic Tertiary Waripi Formation. The principal retrograde alteration minerals include tremolite, actinolite, serpentine, talc and chlorite. Grade is highest where bornite occurs in large dense complex intergrowths with magnetite and anhydrite. Grade has been locally enhanced in the DOZ by a late-stage pyrite-chalcopyrite hydrothermal alteration event with associated brecciation. Ertsberg Diorite along the footwall of the skarn is also included in the reserve where it is mineralised endoskarn or has been mineralised by porphyrytic or late stage hydrothermal alteration. Formation of the EESS was initiated by contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Ertsberg Diorite with later metasomatic alteration during both prograde and retrograde phases. The bulk of sulphide mineralisation formed late in the retrograde phase. The EESS is open along strike to the northwest and down-dip with on-going exploration of these areas. Current exploration is targeting both endoskarn and porphyry style alteration and mineralisation of the Ertsberg Diorite.

For the realisation of the underground railway line RandstadRail in the city area of Rotterdam a bored tunnel is under construction. Diaphragm walls up to a depth of about 40 m were used to construct the building pits for the start shaft, the Blijdorp Station and the end shaft. The water tightness of the diaphragm walls was determined by leakage tests that were executed after the construction of the walls, but prior to the excavation of the building pits. The tests showed satisfactory results with a hydraulic resistance of the diaphragm walls of at least 500 days. To determine the water tightness of diaphragm walls it is recommended to follow the specific procedure as described in this paper.
