India bestowed with 6000km of the coastal belt, contains some of the richest and largest placer deposits with a mixture of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. Each of the minerals is having economic value due to its inherent characteristics for industrial use in fields of paints, metallurgy, refractory, abrasive and so on. The reserves of titanium bearing minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile) in the country is around 378 million tonnes. More than 90% of the titanium based minerals produced worldwide are utilised for making value added products in the pigment industries. Approximately 8 million tonnes of monazite reserves are available in the country from which several rare earth elements like cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium etc. can be extracted for use in several industries. The country contains a deposit of about 20 million tonnes of zircon, which is used in foundries, refractories, ceramics and chemicals. India has a reserve of 107 million tonnes of garnet and 131 million tonnes of sillimanite required for the abrasive and refractory industries respectively. Keeping in view the multifarious uses, the beach sand minerals are being exploited to have the economic growth of the nation. Although the process adopted for the separations are simple, the equipment involved are specially designed because of the nature of the material of construction. Starting from the spirals to magnetic separators, all equipments are manufactured outside India, which is not only costly, but the availability also takes much time for fulfilling the import formalities. Unlike open cast mining, beach sand mining is a environment friendly mining because dredging is implemented to cut and pump the loose sand through a slurry pump causing less damage to the surface topography as both mining and backfilling takes place simultaneously. Therefore all out efforts are made to explore the beach sand placer deposits in an economic manner to emerge as a leader in the global mineral industries.

Current methods of determining jet grout column diameters are highly empirical and site specific, and do not take into account the jet hydrodynamics and soil parameters explicitly. A theoretical model which describes the jet excavation mechanism is introduced in this paper, with the aim of providing an improved prediction tool that can be used in jetting design. The model is based on the assumption that the velocity distribution in the cutting jet is equivalent to that of a free jet with boundaries corresponding to the dimensions of the cavity excavated in the ground. The shape of the cavity formed depends on the erosional properties of the soil and jet expansion is limited by the resistance at the jet-soil interface. The model predicts that the limit of jet penetration is reached when the average dynamic pressure at the jet tip becomes equal to the ultimate soil bearing resistance. The reliability of the model, evaluated using results from four case histories of jet grouting field trials, is within ±15%.

"Gold cyanidation rates are known to be limited by the rate of oxygen dissolution in the cyanidation tanks. The effect of solids loading on the oxygen dissolution rates is not obvious and the results of previous studies are ambiguous. The present paper presents an analysis of oxygen dissolution rates using a ""spent"" commercial gold slurry diluted to various levels of solids loading. It was found, in an 170 litre stirred tank reactor using an inverted cone sparger, that under certain high loading conditions, there was a decrease of as much as 50 %, i.e., there was a halving of the rate of oxygen dissolution as compared to that in clean water. In particular, it was observed that, due to gas flooding of the impeller, there was a drop in kLa even with an increase of gas velocity. Gas holdup reached a maximum value of only 1.7 %. The total power consumption was between 0.06- 0 .10 kw/m3 within the range of gas velocity before flooding occurred. The decrease in oxygen dissolution rate with increased solids loadings is believed to be mainly due to the increase in the apparent viscosity which reduced the turbulence and shearing effect and resulted in larger bubbles and hence reduced the reaction area a. The interrelations between solids loading, gas holdup, flow pattern, power consumption, and liquid mass transfer coefficient are discussed.IntroductionThe reactors generally used in gold cyanidation are Stirred Tank Reactors (STR). Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. This paper is a retrospective on the development, application, and enhancement of the LaModel program from a personal perspective. The narrative starts with an explanation of the objectives behind the original development of the program and then introduces some of the unique and very practical features of the program. Next, a demonstration of how LaModel was advantageously used to model stresses and displacements in a multiple-seam mining situation with highly variable topography is presented. This is followed by the details of a number of the major enhancements and expansions of the program over the years. A back-analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse is then briefly presented, along with the associated development of a recommended calibration procedure for the critical input parameters to LaModel. Finally, some of the present research areas are briefly described, and future enhancements are introduced.

Early in 1971 the Peabody Design and Preparation group began engineering on a preparation plant which was to process eight mil- lion tons per year of raw coal. For the first five or six years this product was to be furnished 50% from surface mining operations and roughly 50% from underground operations. By early 1980, 1008 of the production was to come from underground mines. Because of the large annual commitment from Randolph Preparation Plant, it was essential that the plant operate with minimum down-time. As usual, capital costs were to be kept at a minimum. Before we discuss the details of design, it would be best to discuss the overall picture. Underground production to be pro- cessed through Randolph Preparation Plant was to be delivered by means of one mile overland conveyor from Baldwin #1 Underground Mine to the plant. Surface Mine production was to be delivered by means of 100-ton haulage units dumping in a 1,000-ton capacity hopper. Because of the changing production rates in both the underground and surface mines as well as the great difference in size consist, it was decided that it would be necessary to divorce the plant as much as possible from production. For this reason, twin 6,500-ton raw coal silos were constructed to separate the two coals as well as allow blending. The preparation plant itself, was to be designed to Operate two shifts per day, five days per week, at an average rate Of 2,200 tons per hour with a maximum rate of 2600 to 2800 tons per hour. Coal was to be delivered to our customers by means of rail haulage at both unit train rates and plant process rates. The surface mined coal, after discharging into the 1,000-ton R.O.M. hopper, is fed by means of two 72" wide reciprocating feeders onto a 72" wide steel cable belt. The steel cabled conveyor discharges the R.O.M. coal onto a fixed grizzly, scalping out a percent of the 6 x 0 coal. The balance is fed to a 12' x 27' Rotary Breaker. The material passing through 6" round hole screens is added to the 6" x 0" from the scalping screen. The 6" x 0" is conveyed to the top of one of the 6500 ton silos designated for surface coal. Material that is not broken to pass the 6" breaker screen is discharged to a bin and disposed of with plant refuse.

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. This paper presents numerical and experimen¬tal results dealing with the application of ferric ion oxidation of uranium in acidic media. Conclusions are derived from matching numerical results to experimental data taken on one-dimensional laboratory leaches using ore from a South Texas Coastal plain deposit. Since the numerical results can be made quite general, we are able to extract and quantify the effects of oxidant concentration, flow velocity, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, and competitive oxidant consumers (pyrite and molybdenite) on the experimental results. Our results suggest that the leaching of uranium is a mass transfer controlled while that of pyrite is kinetically controlled.

The synthetic fluormicas may be divided on the basis of silicon content into tetrasilicic, trisilicic, and disilicic. Properties of lead and barium disilicic fluormicas were determined to characterize these two representative members of the disilicic group. Properties described include unit-cell parameters from X-ray diffraction, optical data, chemical composition, density, melting point, and mechanical and dielectric properties. Both the lead and the barium micas were typically monoclinic; neither was sufficiently cleavable to yield usable mica splittings. Both yielded polycrystalline, machinable ceramics with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties.

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of temperature upon the reduction of chromite by carbon and the relative reducibility of chromites as a function of their composition. Ferric oxide was also studied to provide comparative data. Pellets weighing approximately 1 gram and containing 70 percent ferric oxide, chromic oxide, or chromite and 30 percent graphite were subjected to closely controlled temperatures under a flow of argon for 15 minutes. The amount of CO and CO2 evolved was measured, and the reduced sample was analyzed by X-ray diffraction techniques. The reduction of Fe2O3 was studied over a temperature range of 600° to 1,400° C, while the reduction of Cr2O5 and chromite was conducted from 9000 to 1,621° C. The temperature above which appreciable reduction of Cr203 by graphite took place was 1,125° C. The temperature at which significant reduction started for three of the four chromite samples was approximately the same, indicating that there was concurrent reduction of iron and chromium oxides in the chromite mineral rather than selective reduction of iron oxides followed by reduction of chromic oxide. Rhodesian chromite appeared to dissociate at a lower temperature with concurrent reduction of iron. Based on the temperature at Which chromite was 50 percent reduced in 15 minutes, Transvaal chromite reduced most easily, followed by Mouat, then by Kampersian, and finally by Rhodesian DFC material. Statistical analysis of test results indicated that the ferric iron content of chromites affects their reduction behavior more than any other constituent.

The Bureau of Nines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipe- line for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. A probabilistic slope stability computer model was developed at Utah State University and independently evaluated by CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers as a design and analysis tool. Volume I of this report describes the model and Volumes III and IV are users manuals for the computer programs. This volume (Volume II) constitutes the report by the CH2M Hill. It includes a description of a field investigation and stability analysis of an existing tailings dam. Based on the results of the analysis, the tailings dam was evaluated for redesign using probabilistic considerations. Conclusions are made regarding the usefulness of the model as a design tool.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increased usage for acid mine drainage mitigation and abatement as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulphurization byproducts from Virginia Electric?s Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. Multilevel-multiseam hardcoal mines on the European continent usually consist of a huge network of underground openings, sometimes more than 200 km long in total, with some longwalls operating down to a depth of 1,500 m. While operating several longwalls simultaneously, these mines are making use of a number of stationary and mobile measurement- and analysis units in their main ventilation passes combined with atmospheric measurements on the surface. This paper provides an overview over the systems and technology used and describes the typical set-up of a measuring net. To detect and monitor underground fires through fire gases measurement and -analysis, a mobile underground testing laboratory collects data locally in the area of the fire. These laboratories have proven to be extremely useful not only during the actual fire fighting but also for the long-term gas measurements in critical mine areas. They have repeatedly detected starting fires and have thus given the mine the opportunity to react early and to avoid larger damage. Therefore several mobile laboratory units have now been installed for long-term testing in a number of German mines and similar units are being used in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Since the initial start-up, the Toyo Smelter & Refinery has been operating in harmony with the ambient environment, and improvements have been implemented with technologies specifically developed for further protecting the environment. Toyo Smelter & Refinery is now planning to increase the copper production capacity from 280,000 tpy to 450,000 tpy, over a period of several years. In 2003, the first step of this smelter expansion and modernization plan was implemented. The production capacity of the P-S converter was increased dramatically, as it became possible to operate under a ?2 hot-2 blowing? schedule. In 2005, an additional converter will be installed, in order to allow operation under a ?3 hot-2 blowing? schedule. This report will describe the technical improvements on the P-S converters, as well as describe the Toyo expansion program and discuss the technologies applied to the fugitive gas collecting system.

This paper describes a range of products used by the industry, including low-voltage splices, high-voltage splices to 8.7 k V, cable repair sleeves, mining cable terminations used on system voltages up to 25 kV and motor connection kits up to 8 k V. Technical procedures and designs are illustrated.IntroductionThe development of high-performance heat-shrinkable materials slightly over 20 years ago proved to be one of the major technological breakthroughs in power cable accessories. Heat-shrinkable products were introduced initially for use as low-volt age cable accessories in the aircraft and electronics industry. A program of continuous development and product introduction now enables the manufacturer to offer a broad range of products for mining, industrial and utility electrical systems.With the advent of atomic energy, an important discovery was made-exposure of some plastic materials to high-energy electrons can cause the permanent crosslinking, or intermolecular joining, of adjacent molecules. Once the material has been crosslinked, it will not melt or flow at any temperature.The unique properties of heat-shrinkable products also result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulations to high-energy electrons. Because of crosslinking, these products have perfect elastic memory. The heat-shrinkable products are supplied in expanded condition. When heated, they will shrink and tightly cover the object over which they have been placed. 'The functional and operating demands of mine cable accessories exceeded the classic electronic applications of heat shrinkable materials. These demands required a very sophisticated program to develop materials and adhesive systems that could endure the operational environment associated with the mining industry,Ease of assembly, low installed cost and operational reliability are among the main reasons for the acceptance of heat-shrinkable mine cable accessories in electrically powered mines.
