There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

The relatively large amount of phosphorous occurring in many iron ores limits their usefulness aid sometimes renders them valueless under present conditions of nip-iron manufacture. A practical method for removing the phosphorus would be valuable to the iron and steel industry. Gravity concentration has been of little value as far as the removal of phosphorous is concerned, because the compounds of this element are, as a rule, disseminated very finely. Removal of the phosphorous by leaching is not a new idea and has been the subject of some investigation,3,4/ out for data :lave been published. W.R. Crane published analyse of various ore bodies in the Birmingham ham district. The hard or unleached ores a .re much higher in phosphorous than the Soft, leached ores along the outcrops. This fact indicates that as mild a leaching agent as water removes phosphorus effectively if enough time is allowed for it to react. As the forms in which phosphorous occurs in the iron ores are important in the consideration of any leaching operation, much time was expended in devising a method for determining them. According to Professor McVey, University of Alabama, the phosphorous-bearing minerals in the red iron ores of Alabama have not been positively identified by any microscopic methods.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. End-of-life Electronic and Electrical Equipment, o_cially called WEEE, is unjustly regarded as mainly a waste management problem. What is structurally overlooked is the enormous resource impact of these devices. EEE rep- resents a tremendous metal resource, which should be uti- lized through e_ective recycling, which has a much lower environmental footprint than primary production. The actual amount of end-of-life EEE recycled today is embar- rassingly low since insu_cient EEE is collected and part of the collected EEE is exported to developing countries, where it is largely not entering o_cial recycling systems. To achieve a global recycling society issues like technol- ogy, economics, life cycle structure, stakeholder aware- ness and legislation have to be addressed in a global, co-operative manner so that sustainable closed product cycles can be obtained. Requirements for a "global re- cycling society" are de_ned to address today's reality of global ows of used consumer products, taking into ac- count the likely needs of the future.

The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

Contrary to other sulfide minerals, where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is more complex. It is this complexity that initiated a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenites from Bingham Canyon. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes have on recovery. All samples were analyzed using normal mineralogical techniques. The results reveal the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite. These have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite: i.e. hexagonal (2H); and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H-polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the current pit bottom. The 3R-polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance and are concentrated along the margins of the current pit. Concerning their metallurgical behavior, each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. The 2H-polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This results in the production of a high quality concentrate under normal operating conditions. The 3R-polytype, by comparison, is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that are less amenable to recovery. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R-polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve recovery. This investigation highlights the necessity for understanding the mineralogical characteristics of any economic mineral(s), as these will have a direct impact on recovery.

In this paper a statistical multi-scale method for the mechanics parameter prediction of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is presented. First the micro-structure of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is represented. Then the statistical second-order two-scale method for the mechanics performance predictions of the rock mass structure with random cracks/joints distribution is presented, including the statistical second-order two-scale expression on the vector-valued displacement, strain tensor and stress tensor, and the algorithm procedure of statistical multi-sale computation for the mechanics parameters. Finally some numerical results for mechanical parameters for the rock mass with random distributions of multi-scale joints/cracks by statistical multi-scale method are shown.

Soft to medium dense silty and clayey soils are found in many parts of India and conventional friction piles have normally been used for foundations of high rise buildings and other structures on such soils. The author investigated the use of Bored Compaction Piles and these have been used on these soils achieving substantial economies in cost over conventional friction piles. Similarly highly expansive clays, commonly known as Indian Black Cotton Soils occupy about 20 percent of the Indian land area. Short bored underreamed piles have been developed for such soils and a very large construction of various types of buildings and other structures have come up on such piles over the last thirty years in various parts of the country. The paper describes investigations leading to the design and development of both these type of foundations.

A three?stages countercurrent fluidized bed prototipe reactor to neutralize the SO2from smelter gases has been developed. For gases with 8 vol-%SO2, at 800°C and for 4 h mean reaction time of the limestone, the capture of SO2 is 99%, with off gases with 0.07 vol-%. For 2 vol-%SO2, the total capture of SO2 can be obtained at 750°C and 4 h reaction time. The calcine obtained contain a blend of unreacted limestone and calcium sulphatewith minor amounts of residual lime.

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

NKK has developed a new cold bonded pellet process. The features of this process are; 1) it is a continuous process with 10 hours curing. 2) Products can be used as materials for various metallurgical furnaces. 3) Various kinds of slag are used as binders if necessary. 4) The quality of products is excellent. The pilot plant completed in 1981 is now being successfully operated. We are also constructing a commercial plant at our Niigata works. We produced cold pellets containing carbon as material for ferroalloys (Si-Mn), by pilot plant and used them in furnaces. Consequently, considerable economic advantages were obtained.

THE spiral stoping method of mining was first seen by the writer at the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Company's Hidden Creek mine, at Anyox, British Columbia. Where the method received its name, or by whom it was named, is a question, but it was employed by the Granby Company at their Phoenix mine, in the Boundary district, B.C., as early as 1901-02 after they had tried unsuccessfully other methods at that large, law-grade property. its adoption there was suggested by two miners, John and Steve Swanson, then working at Phoenix, who had previously been employed in the hard iron-ore mines of Michigan and Wisconsin, where they had learned this system of mining. The method proved successful at Phoenix and also, later, at the Company's Hidden Creek mine at Anyox, where some 40,000,000 tons, or more, of ore was mined in this manner during a period of about thirty-five years.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, and axisymmetric and plane joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, examined an underground pillar at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD. Investigations involved strain relief and seismic tomography studies in the mine, and ultrasonic velocity measurements on pillar core in the laboratory. Measured octahedral normal stress was 37 MPa (5,366 psi); seismic P-wave velocities averaged 5.2 km/s (17,060 ft/s); and ultrasonic velocities at a pressure of 39.6 MPa (5,750 psi) averaged 6.3 km/s (20,669 ft/s). The difference between in-mine and laboratory velocities is attributed to the attenuation of seismic energy by mine fractures larger and more numerous than those in the samples of core measured in the laboratory. Using these results, researchers hypothesize that pillar rocks have the ability to withstand stress an order of magnitude greater than they currently sustain.

Relentless increases in demand for nickel and vanadium for uses such as steelmaking, catalysts and battery materials, plus the growing financial and environmental costs of their primary extraction, have led to much interest in potential secondary sources of these metals. The presence of such metals in heavy fuel oils, bitumen and related materials offers both opportunities and challenges for potential extraction methods, especially with the growing production and importance of metal-rich fossil fuels around the world. For several decades, Tetronics’ DC plasma smelting technology has been used for the recovery of metals such as nickel and chromium from stainless steel melt dusts and other wastes in compact, environmentally-friendly and efficient plants. This paper explores the suitability of DC plasma smelting as part of a wider flowsheet with feed preparation and aluminothermic reduction techniques for smaller-scale extraction operations based on this important niche secondary source of these key metals.

Glencore Technology (GT) has over four decades experience supplying stainless steel cathode plates (“cathode plates”) to the electro-refining and electro-winning industry. Cathode plates are typically the single biggest capital investment in a refinery. Refineries may view cathode plates as fixed asset or consumables depending on their operational characteristics. This paper examines the issue of cathode plate life and the strategies and philosophies used by different plants in the management of their cathode plate asset. Some plants operate with their original plates after more than 20 years. Others accept high turnover and regular maintenance as normal operating practice. Reference data are provided on plate life for various operating plants including benchmark plants achieving best-practice plate life and operating cost. The role of the electrode handling equipment on cathode plate longevity is also examined, including latest developments in Cathode Stripping Machine, robotic copper stripping, and full-automation production cranes. The ability to identify and manage the population of plates in service is also critical for maximising plate life and minimising its overall operating cost. This paper discusses a novel and unique RFID system for tracking and managing cathode plate inventory. INTRODUCTION Permanent cathode plates The adoption of permanent stainless steel cathode electrodes in the electro-refining of copper was the most significant process development since the first commercial electro-refineries were built in the late 19th century. It provided significant improvement over the labour intensive and complicated starter sheet system. Copper grows over the permanent cathode blade for a number of days before being stripped, and the permanent cathode can be returned straight back to cells for the next cathode cycle. Glencore Technology (formerly Mount Isa Mines (MIM), then Xstrata Technology) has been manufacturing permanent stainless steel cathode plates from the late 1970s with the birth of ISA PROCESS™, and the Kidd process that came one decade later. Invented and commercialised by Mount Isa Mines, the ISA PROCESS™ was first implemented into Copper Refineries Limited (CRL), Townsville, in 1978. The KIDD PROCESS by Falconbridge evolved in the 1980s and was first implemented into the Kidd Creek Tankhouse, both operations converting from traditional copper starter sheets.

Several problems exist with the present design of coveralls used by miners in low coal (seam height 48 inches or less). The back portion of the coveralls often tears when roof bolts or rough areas in the roof are hit. Movement in the shoulder area is restricted. Female low coal miners find it difficult to purchase coveralls that fit properly, and must remove both their hard hat and safety belt in order to urinate and defecate. The objective of this research was to design coveralls which would alleviate these problems. The following features were incorporated into the coveralls; padding in the upper back area to avoid tearing, an action pleat in the shoulders to increase mobility, an inseam zipper to more easily allow miners to perform their bodily functions, and reflective tape to increase visibi¬lity of the miner. A heavyweight denim fabric was used to increase warmth and durability of the coveralls. The coveralls were assessed K long four parameters (comfort, safety, worker productivity, and fabric suitability) using both an in-field assessment by low coal miners and simulation studies. The experimental coveralls proved superior to conventional coveralls along all four parameters. Work clothing sizes for female miners were developed.
