Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

A morfologia, dimensões e composição química de tribocamadas são fortemente dependentes das pressões e temperaturas existentes no contato e oriundas das reações das superfícies entre si, com a atmosfera, com os lubrificantes e contaminantes presentes no contato. No presente artigo foi analisada a formação de tribocamadas em pares DLCaço inoxidável testados por 180, 500, 1000 e 2500 horas em atmosfera de gás refrigerante R134a sem a presença de óleo lubrificante. A caracterização foi realizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (MEV-EDS) (morfologia e composição química) e interferometria ótica de luz branca (dimensões). Nas análises por MEV-EDS foram identificadas tribocamadas que se apresentaram mais pronunciadas nas superfícies do aço inoxidável sendo as mesmas oriundas de transferências mútuas entre os pares tribológicos bem como oxidação. A espessura das tribocamadas, por sua vez variou de 100 a 500 nm. Os resultados revelam que as tribocamadas são quimicamente estáveis e que suas espessuras não variam significativamente após mil horas de ensaio.

"Summary This paper describes a case of a directional pile installation conducted from an existing oil platform in the Caspian Sea, offshore Baku. Results are presented for 660 mm outer diameter (660 mm OD) conductor piles. Each conductor was equipped with a beveled aluminum toe for directional impact driving and was driven through a 710 mm casing using a Delmag 100–13 diesel hammer and a chaser pile. The 710 mm casings were preinstalled to a depth of 75 m below mud line (75 m BML). The longest impact driven conductor pile on the project was 456 m at end of drive, and reached the terminal depth of 295 m BML.Soil conditions consisted of soft to stiff silty clay to a depth of 30 m BML, underlain by stiff clay to 96 m BML, very stiff silty clay to 200 m BML, and very stiff to hard clay down to 300 m BML.In order to assess the maximum stresses in the conductors and check the performance of the hammer, the driving of each conductor was monitored using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA). The hammer fuel setting was adjusted based on the PDA outputs to ensure the conductors were not overstressed during installation. All driving and monitoring operations were carried out from the drill floor.The conductor piles drove easier than anticipated but in the direction predefined by the pre-cut angle of the beveled aluminum toe. The driving system performance was good. Post driving, the SRD were analyzed by either the global method analysis, using WEAP, or by the CAPWAP program.To detect any collision between the conductor being driven and the adjacent wells in production, the well heads were monitored in real time with high sensitivity accelerometers. These accelerometers were connected to an alarm system on the drill floor, triggering a siren and a strobe light should a collision be detected by an abnormal increase of the peak acceleration.IntroductionThe world longest directional impact driven pile was installed in year 2005. The operation was carried out from an offshore production, drilling, and quarters (PDQ) platform located about 120 km east of Baku, in the Caspian Sea.The platform foundation consists of driven piles and 24 slots were available for drilling the wells to the reservoir, located about 3800 m below sea floor. Each slot was fitted with a casing, 710 mm in diameter, running from the top of the jacket to a depth of about 75 m BML (Figure 1). Oil production started in 1997 and by the end of 2003, 14 wells were in operation; 10 slots were therefore still available, either for oil production or for water injection. However, due to larger than expected settlement of the platform, drilling of additional wells was put on hold. After further investigation, experts concluded the settlement was due to an alteration in the mechanical properties of the bearing strata supporting the foundation piles. This alteration was due to either excess soil material transportation, or soil fracture by the drilling fluids (mud), when drilling the first wells. With only 14 wells in production, out of 24 possible, the owner faced a new dilemma: to drill, or not to drill new wells?"

This Bureau of Mines report discusses research to analyze and evaluate extended bumper systems in order to determine the degree of protection provided to equipment operators in the event of rear-end collisions be-tween off-road rear-dump haulage trucks. The basic characteristics of rear-end collisions were determined, and a detailed analysis of the col-lision dynamics was performed to identify the magnitude and direction of impact loads, the amount of energy that must be absorbed during impact, and the major factors that affect the outcome of a collision. Separate bumper designs were developed to facilitate attachment to four 170-st-capacity haulage truck frame types.

"Abstract Originally developed for ground improvement works, the deep mixing method (DMM) has increasingly been applied in recent years for the realization of soil and water retaining structures and as alternative to traditional foundation solutions. From practice, there is a real need for practical guidelines dealing with the execution, the design and the control of such applications. With the aim of developing such guidelines, the BBRI ‘Soil Mix’ project was initiated in 2009. Within this research project, deep soil mix (DSM) material from 38 Belgian construction sites has been tested. In spite of the large advances in the mechanical characterization of the DSM material, one major issue remains the representativeness of the typical core samples in comparison with the real scale behavior of the soil mix elements. There is among others the question of the influence of the unmixed soft soil inclusions on this behavior and the issue of the scale effect which must be considered in the design. In order to investigate these questions, 8 large scale UCS tests and 17 large scale bending tests have been performed on excavated soil mix elements. The present paper discusses results of this experimental campaign, presents some research perspectives and highlights different aspects related to the design of soil mix elements for the realization of retaining wall or foundation solution.INTRODUCTIONSince several decennia, the deep mixing method (DMM) has been used to improve the strength and deformation characteristics of weak soils. In recent years, deep mixing has increasingly been applied – in Belgium and in other countries – for the realization of soil and water retaining structures and alternative foundation concepts. With regard to the execution of the DMM, one can refer to the European standard EN 14679 on deep mixing (2005) that was elaborated under the umbrella of CEN TC 288 “Execution of special geotechnical works”. However, from practice, it has been experienced that this execution standard does not provide enough pragmatic information and guidelines, in particular for the more recent applications of the deep mixing method (with retaining and bearing functions). The same need by the sector for guidance rules linked to design aspects in the context of Eurocode 7 was experienced as well. With the aim of developing such guidelines and in order to provide feedback to the European standardization platforms, the Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) has initiated the BBRI ‘Soil Mix’ project (2009-2013) in collaboration with the KU Leuven and the Belgian Association of Foundation Contractors (ABEF), the Belgian branch of the EFFC. Within this research project, deep soil mix (DSM) material from 38 Belgian construction sites, with various soil conditions and for different execution processes (CVR C-mix®, TSM and CSM), has been tested (Denies et al., 2012)."

A method is described for controlling instability in finite-difference computations of liquid saturation near the borehole of a recovery well. Differences of pressure-and saturation-dependent variables are indexed offcenter, upstream and downstream alternately, to provide a stabilizing average. It was found that size of the time step could be increased by a factor of 4 without loss of numerical stability. Finite differences of the variables occur in a variety of relative numerical sizes and combinations. Those relationships of the differences that contribute to instability may be identified by the computing program in which they occur and modified to assist convergence of the computations and execution of the partial differential equations of liquid and gas flow.

The name FISH (Fully Integrated Sort House) refers to a class of technology deployed at Jwaneng Mine final diamond recovery. In addition, a number of lessons were learnt about the application of new technologies in the industry: ?The required human competency profile demanded by new technology should match the available competencies of the operational staff ?An integrated information management system should be fully functional for both production management and diamond control purposes ?Operational feedback must be correctly evaluated to identify design, maintenance, training and operational issues so as to accelerate the maturity of the new technology within the time span of the sustainable operations project ?Project execution and technology maturity risks have to be evaluated and married to ensure risk mitigation by means of suitable project resource and contracting model selection.

This study aims at investigating the structural characteristics of backfilling material. In this regard, spatial arrangement of solid particles and associated voids in a unit mass of coal mine refuse as backfilling material were tested. The materials were produced from coal mine refuse of Zonguldak Colliery, Turkey. The experimental procedures were developed to determine their void ratio (or its equivalent porosity), bulk density and the shape properties of constituent particles. The orientation fabric and the co-ordination number were the other two fabric elements determined. The filling materials were sieved and their particle size distributions were found. The results obtained by experiments were related to the particle size distribution parameters, namely, the coefficient of uniformity and the effective size. It was concluded that mean value of void ratio is correlated with coefficient of uniformity. The standard deviation of porosity as an index of fabric heterogeneity is clearly correlated to effective size. By an original experiment, the frequency distribution of coordination number was observed as binomial in uniformly graded materials. Also, the co-ordination numbers of test mixtures were calculated by the Marsal method and results obtained showed a good correlation between the minimum particle size and number of contacts per unit area.

A FEW years ago the writer had the privilege of examining a piece of apparatus in the Forest Products Laboratory of McGill University which engaged his attention. The Forest Products Laboratory has an excellent installation of wood-grinding machinery, and the officials in charge were naturally interested in acquiring means for estimating the fineness of various wood grinds. The problem was referred to Dr. O. Maass ( l ). Dr. Maass designed a piece of equipment to measure the surface of a wood grind and derived an equation applicable in calculating its value, as follows : After inspecting this apparatus, the writer was disposed to believe that, with some modifications, Dr. Maass' ingenious idea might be utilized to measure the surface of mineral powders. Obviously, some difficulty would be found in maintaining an even suspension of mineral particles of high specific gravity compared to that of wood pulp. The writer will not bore the reader with a description of the various machines built and tried out. Some of these were satisfactory enough to obtain some valuable information, and to bring to light a difficulty which threatened to bring the investigation to an abrupt ending. For the mineral quartz, it was found that Kin the formula above stated was not a constant.

The carnotite deposits of western Colorado and adjacent sections of Utah and Arizona were formerly an important source of radium and uranium until displaced by the exploitation of foreign deposits in the Congo and northern Canada . Recently interest has been renewed in domestic carnotite ores as a source of vanadium . Carnotite is a canary - yellow, crystalline , pulverulent mineral occurring in sandstones in the Colorado - Utah district as an incrustation on the faces of joints and fractures and deposited around and between individual sand grains , often strongly adhering to the surface of the grains . Chemically, it is a variable combination of potassium, uranium , and vanadium oxides with water of crystallization . It is soft and friable , and occurs in fine - grained or earthy form . In spite of a specific gravity of 4.1 , gravity concentration has not proved practical as a means of beneficiation because of the earthy texture of the mineral . Vanadiferous sandstones occur with minerals ranging from roscoelite (vanadium mica) , containing little uranium , to high- uranium and low -vanadium carnotite . There is considerable local variation in the texture of the ores . The treatment of carnotite ores has been described previously , with attention directed to the elimination of waste in mining and the extraction of radium . The suggested methods included those suitable for the recovery of vanadium , since both radium and vanadium occur in the same minerals . Moore and Kithil suggested crushing from 40- to 80 - mesh with rolls , accompanied by a rubbing action to loosen the carnotite adhering to the sand grains . "Micropiles are often installed to retrofit existing foundations that experience distortion and to underpin structures prior to future construction. The Dublin Road Pump Station project is an example of retrofitting due to a basal failure during construction that compromised the bearing capacity of the soils. A completed pump station settled and had to be restored to its original position, and work could not proceed until a new support system for the partially completed wet well could be designed and installed. The project involved the construction of three below-grade structures for a new pump station in a growing area of Jackson Township, N.J. The general contractor constructed three pump station structures consisting of a pump chamber, wet well and an inlet chamber in early 2006.The geologic conditions beneath the project site (Figure 1) consisted of loose/soft to medium dense/stiff sand, silt and clay to a depth of 40 ft below ground surface, underlain by medium dense to dense glauconitic silty fi ne sand. When the general contractor was constructing the wet well, which involved an internally supported sheet pile excavation 32 ft below the ground surface and 28 ft below the static groundwater level, basal failure, boils and ground loss occurred. Driven piles were installed to support the wet well structure, but additional ground loss was observed within and outside the sheet pile excavation, followed by settlement of the adjacent pump chamber structure. Post-failure investigations were conducted by Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, N.Y. (MRCE), a geotechnical and foundation engineering consultant. Their investigation concluded that the ground losses around the pump station structures had compromised the supportive capabilities of the natural subsoils.The owner engaged Moretrench, a geotechnical specialty contractor, to work with MRCE to develop a constructible solution to support the pump station structures in general and to restore the pump chamber to its original position. Knowing that ground loss had already occurred as a function of the initial basal heave and subsequent pile driving, the team selected micropiles as the preferred foundation element, primarily due to their flexibility in bypassing these disturbed zones and generating capacity as a function of grouting volume and pressure. Drilled piles were also recommended due to concerns about causing additional settlement of the pump chamber if driven piles were used."

"The quality of pellets produced is affected by quality anssastd quantity of green pellets, amount of addition of binders, type of binders added, amount of moisture added along with the other variables like rotation, inclination and fineness of feed. The green pellet quality depends upon chemistry, mineralogy and granulometry of fines used for pellet making, the feed size, its moisture content and porosity. During firing of green pellets ingredients present within reacts to form different phases and microstructure. So in turn physical and metallurgical properties of pellets are influenced by amount and type of binder and flux addition, induration time and temperature. During iron making process, the metallurgical properties of fired pellets are decided by the type and amount of these phases and their chemistry. Green pelletizing and induration studies have been already carried out with hematite ore fines. Indian iron ores of high alumina content showing different pelletizing characters, these studies can’t be directly interpreted. The main objective of proposed research work is to understand the green pelletizing process and determine the water bentonite interaction at different levels. Detailed investigation on swelling behavior of bentonite and microstructure of the green pellets of iron ore fines from SAIL captive iron ore fines from the Barsua in the state of Odisha. To convert these ore fines into pellets, the key raw material, additives and process variables that influence the pellet quality needs to be identified.INTRODUCTION Pelletization is the unit operation of agglomerating iron bearing fines (generally below 150µ with 65-80% passing 40µ) by tumbling in horizontal rotating drums or inclined discs, (Sivrikaya and Arol, 2013; Bhuiyan et al., 2011; Forsmo et al., 2006; Sastry et al., 2003) and the pellets are approximately spherical lumps formed by this process in presence of water and binder, on subsequent induration at 1300°c (Sivrikaya and Arol, 2014; Sivrikaya and Arol, 2013; Sivrikaya and Arol, 2012; Sivrikaya and Arol, 2010; Sastry et al., 2003; Kawatra and Ripke, 2003; Iveson, 2001a; Iveson, 2001b)."

"Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

Recent studies ** at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines have revealed some interesting facts as to the probable behavior of steamed coke in the blast furnace . The literature on the chemistry of the blast furnace was tho roughly reviewed , and with this information in mind , the probable behavior of the coke sulphur in the blast furnace was deduced . Enough small - scale tests were conducted to furnish a check on most of the important deductions , and the conclusions derived therefrom accord with what is already known in regard to the forms of sulphur in coke , and fit in well with the general opinion concerning blast-furnace reactions .

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. Apart from Japan, the slurry shield process using bentonite is carried out in England and Germany. MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprise, under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, produces about 1.1 million tonnes (T) of manganese ore annually from three opencast and seven underground mines. The underground operations are mining using an overhand cut and fill method. The orebody is too narrow for the use of larger equipment and the poor to fair rock mass quality limits the size of stable excavations. Prior to the 1990s underground support consisted primarily of timber square sets in tandem with timber chocks and props. As mine production requirements increased throughout the 1990s led to larger opening sizes and more modern support practices. Research was conducted on ground support design based on rock classification and empirical techniques for designing ground support. Based on the findings and field trials, the Company adopted full column cement grouted cable bolts for back support. Instrumented field trials, using extensometers and load cells on the cable support confirmed the support effectiveness. Stope design was based on two and three dimensional stress modeling which resulted in a significant increase in stope dimensions. The rock mechanics studies for safe stope design were carried out using numerical modeling tool in two and three dimensions for the analysis of stresses. Based on the findings, the safe stope geometry with new stoping parameters was introduced. The earlier stope length of 30 mtrs were changed to 60 mtrs with in situ rib pillar at the cross cuts and in situ post pillars to be left-out in the stope. This leads the formation of of panel comprising of three stopes, for production, supporting and filling. For mechanical handling of ROM in stopes Side Discharge Loaders (SDL) were introduced. The above changes have improved the face productivity from 2?3.5 T with manual operation and 9 T with SDL. The above rapid mining operations has improved the stope productivity but reduced the stope life from 6 to 3 years. For the improvement of the stope availability, further studies were conducted by numerical modeling of stress analysis. The related studies confirmed that with the existing supporting system and proper instrumentation, level interval could be increased up to 45 mtrs from the existing 30 mtrs at deeper levels. At present below 12th Level interval is 45 m at Balaghat Mine. For future mechanization program for introduction of Single Boomers, LPDT, Cutting Machines etc for the development headings rock mechanics studies are underway. The paper provides details of rock mechanics studies that were carried out to study efficacy of the cable bolt support, safe stoping parameters and increased level interval for the improvements in safety, production and productivity at Balaghat Mine.

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. In the operation of any colliery, a factor of prime importance is power, of which there are three sources available--man, horse, and mechanical. It is obvious that man-power is by far the most expensive, .and that animal-power, also, is more costly than mechanical. In recognition of this fact, mine owners must, for economical ?reasons, reduce the use of man-and horse-power to the minimum by the increased use of machinery. In other words, they must aim at as complete mechanization as conditions will permit, taking advantage of existing physical factors that are favourable and making the necessary adjustments and modifications to meet the less favourable conditions. Intensive coal-mining, or the concentrated production of coal, has two distinct objectives: First, the maximum production from a limited area, in a given time, thereby reducing the pit-room to be maintained; and second, reduction in cost. To this end the coal should be mined, loaded and delivered to the surface by mechanical means wherever possible. To do this, however, requires the solution of many problems arising out of the varying conditions that obtain underground. The system of longwall mining lends itself to a more efficient scheme of mechanization than does pillar-and-room, as, in the former, the first step has already been taken by the removal of all the coal in one operation, and the opening-out of one face, the equivalent in mining area of fifteen or more rooms. Much has been clone of late towards mechanization in the longwall mines of the Sydney coal-field, and with gratifying results, but not without great difficulties and frequent disappointments. In 1923, an attempt was made with shaker conveyors. The introduction of conveying was a step to bridge the gap between the face, where the coal is produced, and the main transportation arteries leading to the slope or shaft. The receiving of the coal at the faces and its delivery to main loading points on main haulage-ways was the part allotted to the conveyors.
