The present fuel situation indicates that, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, the burning of coal will be a main source of energy. All coal contains sulfur, which is converted to sulfur dioxide during combustion. The concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the resulting flue gas, for most coals, would exceed the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the sulfur must either be removed from the coal prior to its burning, or be collected from the stack gas before it reaches the atmosphere. There is currently a large amount of research devoted to methods of removing the sulfur from the coal before burning, or during combustion in fluidized beds with materials which trap the sulfur in the solid residue. The commercialization of these processes, however, is not expected in the near future. Flue gas desulfurization appears to be the best near term prospect of fulfilling current air quality control regulations. The lime/limestone wet-scrubbing methods are the most advanced flue gas desulfurization processes and will account for the majority of sulfur removal systems in electric power generation. There are currently at least 23 full-scale systems existing or under construction and 17 of these will use the lime or limestone wet-scrubbing process. (1)

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" THE appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent m:-chine, or to (to more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. The new type is known as the Butchart1 riffle system, and its general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. En ese sentido, se busca extraer cobre, a presión y temperatura normales por lixiviación con cloro acuoso - amoniaco, a partir de minerales oxidados y mixtos, así como recuperar el cobre contenido en el PLS mediante electrodeposición directa, obviando la etapa intermedia de extracción por solventes, para obtener como producto final cobre catódico.

The Pebble deposit contains three contiguous zones. In the Pebble West zone, granodiorite stocks intrude gently warped volcanosedimentary rocks that had been intruded by diorite sills and two felsic intrusion breccias. In the Central zone, volcanosedimentary rocks are cut by diorite and granodiorite sills; the latter are genetically associated with the granodiorite stocks. In these zones, widespread potassic alteration consists of brown biotite and K-feldspar, with abundant quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein stockworks. Chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios range from 2/1 to 1/20. Diorite hosts the highest-grade mineralization, with much of it being disseminated. Patchy, later phyllic alteration is moderate and commonly depleted in copper. The Pebble East zone occupies a granodiorite stock and intruded host rocks below an eastwardly thickening wedge of barren Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks up to 600 m thick. Brown biotite alteration and copper mineralization are strong, with chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios commonly over 1/1. The zone extends to a depth of at least 1200 m below surface; some drill holes bottomed in strong mineralization. Later, weak to moderate sericitic alteration removed some chalcopyrite and locally remobilized gold. The Pebble deposit has a Measured/Indicated resource of 3 billion tonnes grading 0.28% Cu, 0.32 g/t Au and 0.015% Mo (= 0.5% copper-equivalent) and an Inferred resource of 1.13 billion tonnes grading 0.30 g/t Au, 0.27% Cu and 0.015% Mo (0.55% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone has an Inferred resource of 2.13 billion tonnes grading 0.55% Cu, 0.34 g/t Au, and 0.037% Mo (0.97% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone is open to the east and to a lesser extent to the north, south, and to depth.

Remote operation of continuous miners has enhanced the health and safety of underground miners in many respects; however, numerous fatal and non-fatal continuous miner struck-by accidents have occurred when using remote controls. In an effort to prevent these injuries, NIOSH researchers at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory examined the workplace relationships between continuous miner operators and various tramming modes of the equipment using motion captured data, predicted operator response times, and field- of- view data to determine causes of operator-machine struck-by events in a virtual mine environment. Factors studied included machine speed, direction of escape, operator facing orientation relative to the machine, work posture, distance from machine, and operator anthropometry. Close proximity to the machine, high machine tramming speeds, a right-facing orientation and operator positioning near the tail all resulted in high risk of being struck. It is hoped that this data will provide an improved rationale for operator positioning for remotely operated continuous miners.

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The mine is currently being re-evaluated as a potential small-scale selective operation.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Platten, I M, 2012. "Advanced Flotation Technology is the application driven design of Don-Oliver flotation cells to achieve the optimum performance for each type and grind of flotation. Optimum performance is the combination of both recovery and selectivity.Optimized performance is the combined product of optimized mixing and effective froth removal. Optimized mixing is applied to roughers, scavengers, cleaners and specialty cells such as those to float hydrocyclone underflows in both primary and regrind circuits in order to reduce overgrinding. Effective mixing for fine material is easy, but overmixing reduces selectivity in frothbed.Selectivity in flotation is an important target, especially when treating complex ores, and parameters in frothbed have been examined to improve the separation of minerals and eliminate circumstances that reduce separation rate.Advances in process control have been achieved with expert controls and instructive operator information data. This has gained a higher degree of understanding of cell operation and ore type being processed to be used in future process development work. Excellent results of this Advanced Flotation Technology have been achieved and designs through 7000 cu ft (200 m3) are currently available for high capacity concentrators. Approach A water resistant extensometer is made by enclosing a rod-actuated transducer in a telescoping tube which is enclosed within an oil-filled outer housing. How It Works To assemble a water resistant extensometer, a cylinder -shaped transducer and two support rings are pushed into the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube where the transducer is held in place by friction. The outside of the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube is then greased and slid into the slightly larger-diameter section. See drawing. The cylinder-shaped transducer contains a potentiometer whose actuating arm is attached to a stainless steel extension rod that passes through one end of the telescoping tube. "Although the Operations Research technique of Reliability Theory has been applied with marked success in many fields, including the Apollo spaceship programs, the concept of reliability has not been generally adopted in mining and other heavy industries. Of course, reliability, or the probability that a system will be able to operate without a failure for a given interval of time, does not require the same emphasis in mining as in the aerospace industries. Nevertheless, certain aspects of Reliability Theory can be followed advantageously. For example, reliability calculations can determine the best time to overhaul and whether to retain stand-by units.The usefulness of the pseudo-operations research technique known as Replacement Theory is more readily re-cognized by the maintenance engineers in mining and other heavy industries. One of the least complex models enables the optimum Lifetime of an asset to be determined."

"SynopsisAlthough women all over the world have been involved in mining activities for centuries, mining has always been considered a very masculine industry due to its heavily male-dominated workforce as well as the physicality of mining work. The mining industry has not been an obvious career choice and preferred place of employment for women; women were mainly employed in administrative and advisory positions. Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from being employed in underground operations in South Africa, but the Mines Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996, removed these restrictions. In addition, new mining legislation (the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No. 28 of 2002) and the accompanying Mining Charter make specific provisions for the inclusion of women in core mining activities and require 10% of core positions to be filled by women.This article voices perceptions of the physical ability of women employed in core mining positions. Findings are drawn from empirical work undertaken at platinum, phosphate, and copper mines. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms are used. It is evident that women find it extremely difficult to perform mine work that requires physical strength and stamina. Practical recommendations, informed by the literature review and empirical findings, are made with the objective of contributing to the sustainable deployment of women in the mining industry.IntroductionFor many years, mining has been considered the foundation of the South African economy. Although the mining industry in South Africa is currently under considerable pressure and experiences various challenges, including escalating operational costs, electricity tariff increases, safety-related issues and associated production stoppages, poor productivity, labour unrest, and reduced demand both globally and domestically, it remains a key contributor to the national economy and development of the country (IDC, 2013, p. 9).Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from meaningful participation in the mining industry and were denied access to skills and jobs, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 initiated substantial socio-political and economic transformation in South Africa. Nearly every sector in the country was transformed and re-shaped, primarily through sector-specific legislation, but also through negotiations between government, industry, and labour unions to create and refine the so-called sector charters, which included the Mining Charter. The vision of the new regime, the African National Congress (ANC), was to ‘transfer power to the people and transform society into a non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic one, and change the manner in which wealth is shared, in order to benefit all the people’ (ANC, 2007)."

The Minto coal basin lies in the central part of the province of New Brunswick, near the head of Grand Lake. The village of Minto which is the centre of mining activity of the district, lies about 35 miles east of Fredericton and somewhat greater distances to the north and west of the cities of St. John and Moncton respectively. Although coal has been mined in the basin for a number of years, it was not until recently that the production became sufficient to warrant a thorough geological investigation. The summer of 1922 was spent, in accordance with in structions from the Director of the Geological Survey, in making a detailed study of the geology and coal resources of the Minto coal basin, which is covered by the Minto and Chipman map sheets, each embracing an area of 200 square miles. The present paper is a short outline of the principal results obtained in the field. The writer wishes to acknowledge the assistance cheerfully given him by the managers and officials of the various companies operating in Minto. He wishes especially to thank Mr. W. B. Evans, Manager of the Rothwell Coal Company, for assistance in the collection of fossils and for the generous supply of information relative to the early history of the coal field.

Pyrite depression in the flotation of copper ores is difficult due to the activation of Cu2+ ions on pyrite surface. In this study, the radical chain reaction involving the redox cycling of Cu(I/II) induced by sodium metabisulphite (MBS) was exploited to selectively depress the flotation of copper-activated pyrite at pH 8.0. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the presence of Cu2+ and O2 was essential to the formation of SO•− 5 through sulphite oxidation, the main entity to convert the activating species Cu(I)S on pyrite to Cu(II)-hydroxide/sulphate, causing deactivation of pyrite. The depression role ofMBS on pyrite flotation was closely associated with the type of grinding media which affected the electrochemical conditions of flotation. When forged steel was used as the grinding media, a high dosage of MBS was required to depress pyrite, but a low dosage of MBS could almost completely depressed pyrite when high chrome steel grinding media was used. This is because high chrome steel produced a stronger oxidation condition with a higher amount of Cu2+ and O2 which promoted the formation of SO•− 5

In the field of pyrometallurgy, the presence of multiple molten phases with distinct chemical compositions, such as slags, mattes, speiss liquids, metals and molten salts, is a well-known phenomenon. These phases exhibit strongly non-ideal solution behaviour and are mutually miscible to varying degrees. To describe these complex molten liquids, the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM) has proven effective and has been applied to numerous binary, ternary and several higher-order multicomponent systems related to pyrometallurgy. In recent decades, the complexity of high-temperature processes has escalated due to increased impurity concentrations in primary ores, the incorporation of recycled consumer products and the integration of metallurgical plants through by-product and waste exchanges. To address these issues, PYROSEARCH laboratory has been developing large 20-component thermodynamic database using a generalised CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) methodology integrated with experimental investigations. Over the past decade, strategic decisions were made balancing the ability to generate experimental data, prediction power, accuracy, stability of calculations, as well as computational time, which are discussed in the paper. Examples provided for issues of >3 liquid immiscibility, non-ionic behaviour and exaggerated ‘sharp’ enthalpies of mixing in silicate slags, dealing with multiple oxidation states, as well as comparative analysis of pair and quadruplet approximation in MQM.

"Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001).Recycled water, however, has been shown to adversely affect flotation. Reagent efficiency can be reduced due to increased suspended solids. A loss of mineral recovery can occur due to competitive adsorption between reagents and other dissolved species, loss of reagents due to precipitation, and unwanted reactions. Further, a reduction in grade can occur due to non-selective coating of reagents on valuable and gangue minerals, and hydrophobic coating of microbiological material on gangue, causing unwanted flotation. Yet despite these drawbacks, water reuse has the advantages of minimal fresh water use and reduced reagent consumption by recovering the unconsumed reagents retained in wastewaters (Bruckard et al., 2011; Levay et al., 2001; Shengo et al., 2016; Slatter et al., 2009)."

"The geological features of a rock mass have a direct influence on its blasting characteristics. It has been observed that perimeter control techniques provide excellent results in massive crystalline formations but may give poor results in weak and or highly jointed formations.A field study was conducted with the objective of understanding the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing and controlling blast damage. The field work involved the assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of drift rounds in a geologically dominant rock mass.The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation (RQD), joint parameters and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage is described below. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on blast damage is also discussed below on the basis of quantitative data. In addition, critical particle velocity ranges for damage to different rock types have also been outlined in this paper."

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a rock (roof) mass classification (RMC) system/index that was originally developed by the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) for aspects of underground coalmine geotechnical design and was first introduced to Australia as a part of the original Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability (ALTS) project conducted in 1997/1998. In subsequent years further refinement to its calculation was undertaken, such that the CMRR is now an industry standard for quantifying the structural competence of the primary bolted roadway roof interval and has been routinely/widely used by Australian collieries over the last 25 years with great success for roof support/chain pillar design. There have been many publications discussing the use and calculation of RMC systems and this paper also provides an important update and recommendations in how best to calculate the CMRR. However, it is rare to find an explanation as to why and how a RMC system/index satisfactorily takes account of the mechanics and rock mass behavioural issues associated with ground reinforcement. This paper provides such an explanation and insight with respect to the CMRR so it is: 1) better understood, 2) to allay any concerns, and therefore 3) will continue to be confidently used by and for the collieries’ benefit.
