This process is performed in the Pernot puddling furnace; it removes from 75 to 80 pel. cent. of the phosphorus, most of the sulphur, and practically all the silicon, from crude iron, in from five to eight minutes. It has been in regular use since March, 1877, and has produced over seventeen thousand tons of mashed metal for the openhearth furnace. During two years, nearly all, and lately, all the open-hearth steel produced in these works has been made from about 5 tons of washed pig and 2 tons of scrap per open-hearth furnace heat. There arc 12 open-hearth furnaces, of which 4 to 9 are running, according to the state of orders. A large amount of highly phosphoric iron from France and Belgium has been also washed and then puddled for parties who have taken, or are expected to take, licenses. The mashing of pig for puddling, however, is not a practice at Krupp's works, because pore pigs are nearly as cheap as impure ones. The author and his assistant, Mr. Laureau, spent, during the last month, three days at Krupp's works, examining this process. They copied out of the office books characteristic analyses and physical tests, some of which are given berewith. They also brought home many samples of pig, cleaned metal, puddle bar, and steel, which they saw treated. Analyses of some of these samples appear in Table IV. As there are no blast furnaces at Essen, the iron is melted in two Bessemer cupolas with fore-hearths; they melt 124 pounds of iron with 1 pound of coke. The metal is run by a spout from the forehearth into an opening at the side of the main door of the washingfurnace. The The washing-furnace.—This is a regenerative gas furnace. It has a Pernot revolving-hearth of 12 feet external diameter and 3 feet depth. (See Plate.) The four regenerator chambers hare 780 cubic feet capacity, which is about the same as the average regenerator capacity of open-hearth steel furnaces of equal tonnage. The lining is 13 inches thick on the sides and 9 inches on the bottom, thus giving a hearth 9 feet 10 inches by 2 feet 3 inches deep. The lining is composed of lumps of highly refractory ores

Airblasts have been monitored at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Thirty-seven production blasts have been monitored with three seismographs, resulting in one hundred and eleven complete air pressure records. Instrumentation selection use is described. Data analysis includes an assessment of the predictability of peak overpressures by means of the cube root scaled distance law. It is found that predictability for the cases studied here is not good. An extensive discussion of possible explanations is included. A detailed analysis of the frequency content of the observed airblasts, of considerable importance in evaluating potential annoyance problems, has been made for all records. A computer program has been written to simulate airblasts induced by multiple-hole blasts. A series of small experimental blasts have been detonated and monitored in order to allow an assessment of the program. It is clear that airblasts, especially when induced by very small charges and monitored at very close distances, are highly sensitive to detonation times. Retrofitting of airblast records occasionally was possible, but considerably improved field work is required to validate or refute the computer model.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It is a pleasure, for several reasons, to be here at this 13th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining. Of course it's always a pleasure to be able to see and reacquaint myself with many long-time friends; but it's also a pleasure, or 1 should say worthwhile, because I take something back with me, some knowledge about mining that lets me do my job better and more safely. if I can do that, I've accomplished my purpose in being at a conference such as this. This conference is a little different, though. I have to earn my stay. I have to earn it by telling you a story; a story about mining through a mile of rock to get from one coal seam to the same seam on the other side of an ancient river channel; a story about mine personnel taking over the job from a contractor; a story about having to mine through two faults after the hard part was supposed to be over, but, most importantly, it's a story about how it was accomplished successfully and safely by a group of ordinary coal miners possessed with determination, belief in themselves, and a "can do" attitude. If you can take any part of my story and use it to do your job better and more safely, then I will have accomplished my purpose in being here today. Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation's Galatia Mine is located in Southern Illinois near the town of Harrisburg in Saline County, about 350 miles south of Chicago and 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. Construction of the mine began in 1982, and the first coal was shipped in 1984 from the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam, 550' below the surface. Mining began in the Herrin No. 6 Seam, 100' above the No. 5 Seam, on April 1, 1985. Mining in both seams began by using the room-and-pillar method. In 1989, the No. 6 Seam was converted to longwall mining, as was the No. 5 Seam in 1992. Today, all mining is done by the longwall method except for the required development work, which is performed by continuous miners. A heavy-media preparation plant with a 4.2 million-ton annual clean-coal capacity processes the coal. By the end of 1994, with annual production now exceeding 4 million tons, we will have shipped over 30 million tons of steam and metallurgical coal throughout the United States and the world. Most of the coal has been used as the primary source of fuel to generate electricity for the city of St. Louis. The No. 5 Seam coal can be used as a semi-soft coking coal or as a high-Btu, relatively low-sulfur steam coal. Its use allows utilities to comply with Phase I of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 without installing flue gas desulfurization units or blending with other coals. The Herrin No. 6 Seam is a high-Btu, medium-sulfur steam coal that requires blending to meet Phase I requirements. Because the No, 6 Seam coal does not meet the Clean Air Act Amendments' Phase I compliance standards, we were forced to cease mining operations in the No. 6 Seam, leaving 170,000,000 tons of minable coal in the ground. Last month the Galatia Mine became a single-seam operation mining the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam only. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and the resultant S02 emission limitations on electrical power generation plants effectively eliminate, beginning in 1995, the near-term potential for profitable mining of the Galatia Mine's high sulfur Herrin No. 6 Seam coal. Because of the Clean Air Act Amendments, it is virtually impossible to market high-sulfur coals like the No. 6 coal unless the mine location and mining conditions enable greatly depressed sales prices to cover costs. Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. Have you ever had a neighbor complain about a blast one day, but says the next day’s blast was better, even though the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) increased? How about neighbors that complain about a small trimming shot, but don’t complain about a big production shot? Have you ever reduced the pounds/delay and gotten more complaints ? Mine operators are often bewildered when trying to correlate blast design parameters to homeowner complaints. When complaints come, standard practice is to set up a seismograph in the neighbor’s yard to monitor the blast. Immediately after the blast, the neighbor usually reappears from the house wanting to know the seismograph reading. When told that the PPV was 0.1 in/set, well below damage levels, the homeowner explodes saying “Your machine is wrong”. Perhaps he is right. Understanding why people complain about blasting is not about PPV, it’s all about structural response. People could care less about how much the ground vibrates; they only care about how much their house vibrates. In this paper we will examine the primary factors that control structural response. Through the use of a large array of digital seismographs, the effects of two production blasts on a community surrounding a quarry are studied. The predicted structural response resulting from each blast is calculated at 175 seismograph locations. The predicted response is then correlated to previous research on human perceptibility to vibrations. The results of this analysis and correlation give a better understanding of what the residents actually feel in their homes. The detonations of two single-hole signature blasts are also recorded by the array of seismographs revealing the dynamic characteristics of the geology ‘surrounding the quarry. Once the influence of the geology was understood, blasts were configured to disrupt the natural rhythm of the site through the use of millisecond delays.

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

We describe a technique that allows rapid imaging of the thermal diffusivity of the sample by a modified photo-thermal technique. The thermal diffusivity in hardened steels strongly correlates to the hardness. Hence in a noncontact manner and with optical microscope resolution, a 2D map exhibiting the crystallographic phases and hardness of the sample can be retrieved. Two almost collinear laser beams scan the surface, one as a modulated pump and a second as a CW probe. The deflection of the probe carries information on the thermal expansion of the sample and with it, on the thermal diffusivity. It is shown that a single determination of the time delay of the modulation of the probe beam can be used to retrieve the thermal diffusivity.

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

To provide a flexible, low-maintenance, low-cost continuous mine air monitoring system as an alternative to conventional fixed-point, electronic monitoring systems. Background Continuous monitoring of mine air is highly desirable (and often required) not only to improve miner safety, but also to increase mine productivity. Continuous air monitoring systems can provide earl" warning of developing fires, excessive methane accumulation, reduced oxygen levels, and other developing problems in remote, inaccessible or sealed areas, and in active workings. Fixed-point, electronic systems require one Sensor for every gas to be measured at every defined monitoring location. As the number of monitoring locations increases, so does the cost, along with increases in the time required for routine maintenance and calibration of the sensor System cost also increases when monitoring locations are identified for mine areas requiring permissible electrical equipment.

Traditionally fine aluminum is not used in dry commercial explosives due to the hazard associated with aluminum dust explosions during mixing. An industrial process has been developed which enables the safe use of paint grade Aluminum with ANFO. The addition of fine aluminum particles resulted in increased velocity of detonation of ANFO compositions. Velocities of detonation, in 52mm (2 1/16 in.) diameter confined charges were 20% higher than velocities of detonation of straight ANFO. The detonation performance of fine grained ANFO was not benefited by Al at the diameter tested. Furthermore use of larger Al flakes resulted in decreased velocities of detonation. The results are compatible with the experience of Al addition to high explosives. Tests were also conducted using bio-diesel, finding no substantial difference in the performance of AN fuel explosive compositions which used bio-diesel.

Measurements of the quantity of entrained air within processes have challenged instrumentation developers for years. This is particularly true in the unique and demanding operating environment and applications seen in minerals processing. In minerals processing applications, entrained air plays a role in errors seen within nuclear density gauge measurements and in pumping efficiency. It is also the major component of flotation processes. The measurement of the quantity of entrained air, known as the gas void fraction, can now be performed from the outside of a process pipe through CiDRA?s patented passive sonar array-based technology. Within column cells, the need for a robust, no maintenance, accurate means of measuring the entrained air, known as gas holdup, has resulted in a submersible version of this technology. CiDRA?s meter technology calculates the gas void fraction by first measuring the speed at which naturally occurring sound in the process slurry propagates past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. A known relationship between this speed of sound and the entrained air captured in the form of bubbles within the slurry is then applied in CiDRA?s meter to calculate the gas void fraction. This paper will present the measurement technology, its operation, its calibration and its application in a variety of gas void fraction and gas holdup measurement situations such as pumping efficiencies, hydrocyclone operation, external sparging, and column cells.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

Manganese-bearing deposits f the Leadville, Colo., district are of two distinct types. Manganosiderite, a combined or intimately mixed ferrous and manganous carbonate, occurs in unaltered zones as the predominant mineral. From 50 feet below the surface to as deep as 900 feet, psilomelane and wad, both black manganese oxide minerals, are found in intimate contact with hematite and limonite. A typical analysis of the black oxide ore shows 20.08 percent Fe, 18.64 percent Mn, 15.91 percent insoluble, 14.91 percent moisture, 0.94 percent Zn, and 2.13 percent Pb. A considerable tonnage of the oxide ore has been mined for production of spiegeleisen and for other purposes.

The concept of adsorption or separation of platinum anions from base metal cations in chloride media using native or chemically modified activated carbons has been discussed in various journals within the context of batchwise systems. In our research work, a fixed-bed column, loaded with native and amine-immobilized activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8), was used to study selective adsorption of platinum ions from chloride media at different flow rates, bed depth and initial metal concentrations. The kinetics, mass transfer characteristics, breakthrough data and separation factors (ß(Pt/Fe) and ß(Pt/Cr)) were quantitatively analysed and modeled. The bed-depth service time (BDST) model was used to model the breakthrough curves successfully in fixed-bed columns and also the dispersive diffusion in the radial and axial directions of the bed were evaluated. The inner diameter of the column was 3 cm and the bed depth was between 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm. Concentrated 4 M HCl acid solution was used to elute the fixed-bed column. It was demonstrated that amine-treated activated carbons provides superior separation factors between platinum and base metals (Fe, Cr). Results showed also, that 95% saturation was reached within 10~26 hours depending on the nature of ACs at a flow rate of 11 mL/min and initial concentration of 5 ppm.

The new Onahama N0.3 tankhouse was put into operation early in 1973. This new tankhouse, which has a capacity of 90,000 metric ton cathode per year, is distinct in many important respects from conventional tankhouses. The major objectives in design were to simplify the construction and ope- ration for reduction of the costs for labor, interest and depreciation and also to reduce the copper inventory in the tankhouse by the use of conti- nuously-cast anodes. As a result, the investment cost was decreased by approximately 30% and the inventory cost by approximately 600, while the production per unit area of the tankhouse was increased by 80 - 100% as compared with the existing conventional-type tankhouses at Onahama. By abolition of cell inspection and maximum mechanization of materials handling the labor cost was decreased by as much as 80%. On the other hand, the new system has some disadvantages, such as increase in anode scrap ratio and increased cost of anode casting. The No.3 tankhouse system is, however, still at its starting point, while conventional methods have been continuously improved over the past years of operation. It is expected that the innovational ideas behind this system will serve as bases for a more efficient electrolytic refining system in future.

It is possible to reproduce the performance of an operating CIP or CIL plant in the laboratory, in small scale batch kinetic tests, coupled with mathematical models that translate kinetic data into predicted steady state gold profiles across multi-stage adsorption circuits. Once the performance of the commercial plant has been mimicked by the model, the plant operating parameters can be varied systematically in the model, and the likely response of the plant to the step wise change can be determined. In this way it is possible to inexpensively optimize the operating conditions of an existing plant, with no disruption to plant operations and no economic risk to the mining company. This approach had been adopted by IAMGOLD to optimize the performance of their Rosebel CIL plant following several major expansions in mill capacity since 2004.

Micro-computers have made it practical to install a high-speed acquisition system to collect data from a longwall face in near real-time. By simultaneous data analyses using neural networks and fuzzy sets, information regarding longwall mining performance and underground behavior can be provided and forecasting longwall instability and detecting geological anomalies is feasible. This paper presents details of the application of neural networks and fuzzy sets in developing on-line evaluation of longwall roof behavior. Techniques for interpreting longwall shield pressures and characterizing roof conditions are discussed.

The Santa Fe Railway serves the dominant U. S. potash producing region which is centered at Carlsbad, NM. This rail system extends over 12,000 miles stretching from Chicago to the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of California. (see Figure 1) Since Carlsbad mining operations began in the 1930?s, Santa Fe has been transporting potash to many of the important grain producing areas of the country and to the major ports in Texas and California. Santa Fe has maintained a close relationship with the potash companies and has adopted a marketing philosophy of attempting to maximize opportunities for the Carlsbad producers where it is mutually beneficial. Potash has been an important commodity for the Santa Fe. It accounted for 8% of our revenue in 1965 and 3% in 1984. In the 1950?s, Carlsbad became the second largest revenue producing point on the Santa Fe. But this prominent position has diminished as ore reserves became depleted, imports flooded the U. S. market, and truck transportation developed.
