As part of an ongoing study to determine how the wear of mining tools affects dust generation, the Bureau of Mines has measured bit tempera-ture rise during cutting of abrasive rock. Radial bit wear-flat tem-peratures generated by linear cutting in Berea Sandstone were measured as a function of cutting depth and speed. Depths of cut (DOC) were 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in, and cutting speeds were 10, 40, and 80 in/s, respectively. Temperature sensing was accomplished by emplacement of a miniature thermocouple into the center of the wear flat. Temperatures observed ranged from 2000 to 5000 C. Correlation between depth and temperature was weak. Temperature increased linearly with speed at 1/2-in DOC, but data taken at 1/8-and 1/4-in DOC produced inconclusive results. The results indicated that at least for deeper cuts (1/2 in), bit temperature, and therefore wear, can be reduced by lowering the cutting speed.

Risk assessment is an essential component of mine feasibility studies. However, it is often challenging to identify the appropriate analysis and derive the required input data. The uniqueness of a mining project and the associated technical issues require customization of the risk assessment approach to meet both requirements and characteristics. The uncertainty driving the operating risk in mine feasibility studies and its assessment through Monte Carlo simulation as a component of a cash flow analysis are discussed in this paper. The paper introduces the use of the analytic hierarchy process for derivation of qualitative input and conducts quantification of the three main sources of operating performance delays, equipment, ground and schedule problems, in a cash flow simulation. A methodology for the assessment of operating risk in mine feasibility studies is presented.

As ligas de alta entropia são sistemas de ligas multicomponentes onde os elementos constituintes estão em proporções atômicas equivalentes ou quase equivalentes. As ligas de alta entropia são materiais avançados com propriedades únicas e promissores como materiais estruturais. Contrário as fases intermetálicas ordenadas esperadas pela metalurgia clássica, fase simples em solução sólida com estruturas CCC e CFC têm sido encontradas nos sistemas de ligas de alta entropia. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi preparar e caracterizar as ligas selecionadas FeCrNiCoAlCu e FeCrNiCo(AlCu)0,5. A preparação da liga foi realizada em forno a arco voltaico em atmosfera protegida. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada através de microscopia ótica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura e por difração de raios-X. A caracterização mecânica foi realizada por medidas de dureza Vickers e por ensaio de compressão a frio. Os resultados mostram que ambas as ligas são constituídas por soluções solidas de estrutura dendrítica. A microdureza e o limite de escoamento compressivo da liga FeCrNiCo(AlCu)0,5 foi superior à liga FeCrNiCoAlCu.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. In February, 1976, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation obtained an option from Foote Minerals, Inc., to evaluate reprocessing of two uranium tailing piles. Foote received ownership of the Naturita and Durango tailing piles in 1967 through the purchase of Vanadium Corporation of America. The option was exercised in November, 1976, after initial testwork proved that a viable extraction technique existed. Preparation for production at Naturita began immediately with engineering and en¬vironmental permitting proceeding simultaneously. Production began in December, 1977, just 22 months after acquisition of the property and-was completed 17 months later.

A thermal upgrading process by which nickel value can be concentrated in a ferronickel alloy is a possible alternative to treat Sudbury pyrrhotite (Po) tailings with nickel content of 0.5–1.5 wt%. The basis of this process is precipitation of Ni from Po at high temperature once Fe/S ratio in the iron-deficient Po is shifted towards stoichiometric or near stoichiometric FeS (troilite) either by the addition of iron and/or the removal of sulfur. For the iron addition route, the reaction between elemental iron and nickeliferous pyrrhotite to produce ferronickel alloy and Ni-depleted iron sulfide phase plays a critical rule. In this paper, the formation mechanism of ferronickel alloy was investigated using the diffusion couple technique to better understand the nickel diffusion behavior in the iron and sulfide phases.

The transmission of excessive vibration to the human body can cause physical stress that may result in crippling pain or permanent disability. Rock drills are known to transmit high levels of vibration that are difficult to attenuate through conventional approaches to vibration isolation. However, it can be shown that once the ISO frequency weighting has been applied, most of the vibratory effect of the rock drill?s motion is concentrated at the drill?s operating frequency. This observation opens the way for utilizing a concept known as vibration absorption, aimed at attenuating the rock drill?s vibration. In essence this entails using the inertia of a secondary vibratory system to counteract the motion of the handle. This article documents an investigation into the use of such an absorber for attenuating rock drill vibration and demonstrates the feasibility of such an approach. A mathematical model of such an absorbing handle was developed and used for design studies. Based on these investigations an experimental prototype model was manufactured and tested. A significant reduction in vibration levels could be achieved.

Gas explosion in underground coal workings can pose a serious threat to the safety of mine workers and the entire mine operations. Gas explosion is a very complex thermal-chain reaction in a confined underground environment. Based on combustion and explosion theory, three dimensional (3D) computational models were developed to simulate mine gas explosion flame and overpressure wave propagation in a single entry gateroad in underground coalmines. Six different explosion scenarios were modelled and compared with large scale experimental results and AutoReaGas simulations. Model validations show that the use of shear-stress transport (SST) k-? model together with eddy-dissipation model (EDM) produces good agreement with both experimental and AutoReagas simulation results. Modelling results demonstrated that the changes of temperature versus time can be divided into four stages, ie the initial condition stage, and periods of warm-up, active burning, and burnt-out. Assuming a limited volume of methane is involved in the explosion, the maximum temperature decreases as the distance increases from the explosion point, with the highest temperature reaching about 2460 K. Modelling results show that the evolution of the explosion flame shape experiences four typical stages, ie spherical flame, finger-shape flame, flame with the skirt touching the side walls (ribs) and tulip flame, which are similar to the pattern of a duct explosion. The pressure in the gateroad remains the same as the initial value before the arrival of the explosion wave and then increases rapidly to the maximum value. Modelling results from this study will be used for the design of explosion arresting devices and mine seals in underground coalmines.CITATION:Liu, A and Ren, T, 2017. WITH the close of 1932 and the third year of the depression, the activity of oil production presents, amidst the general wreckage and chaos of industrial society, a somewhat unique picture of rationalized economic effort. East Texas still dominates the contemporary horizon, but it has become, at least for the time being, a definitely known factor. With its 9500 wells it is approximately 90 per cent drilled up. So long as production control obtains, it is merely one important factor of the national oil reserve. Each succeeding month of stabilized production tends to lull the industry's fears and the menace, both actual and psychological, of this giant field becomes ever more remote.

"The Soudan Mine was Minnesota’s first iron mine, operating from 1882 to 1962. The mine was donated to the State of Minnesota in 1963 and became a state park in 1965. The mine discharge contains elevated copper and cobalt concentrations and has been treated with an ion-exchange-resin-based system since 2009. The system includes flow equalization tanks, bag and cartridge filters, a carbon tank and two commercial ion exchange tanks. Although effective, the system’s high cost, inefficient removal of suspended material and substantial maintenance have been ongoing and troublesome issues.In November 2012, we initiated a pilot test using a peat-based sorption media. This media is produced from raw reed-sedge peat through a patented, low-temperature carbonization process that produces a hardened granular sorption material. The granules are uniform, have high hydraulic conductivity and maintain the high metal affinity of natural peat.Mine water was pumped through the peat-based sorption media without any pretreatment. Copper input concentrations typically ranged from 30 to 60 µg/L but increased to a high of 364 µg/L in the summer of 2013. Since startup, more than 60 million L (16 million gal or 32,000 bed volumes) have been treated, with average removal rates of 75 percent for particulate copper and 60 percent for dissolved copper. Backwash is required at about 4,000 bed volumes, but with a combination of air sparging and high-flow backwash, the suspended material is removedfrom the media.One tank of the peat-based sorption media was found to remove copper similarly to the first four components of the existing system. By reducing size and complexity, reductions in operation and maintenance costs are possible. A comparison of the estimated costs indicate that replacing the four initial components with the single media tank has the potential to reduce annual operating costs by more than half from around $163,000 to $70,000."

"During the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex in the Potgietersrus area magma reacted with the original floor rocks— Archaean granite or Malmani dolomite and overlying Penge handed ironstone or sedimentary rocks of the Pretoria Series. The complex sequence of sulphide-rich mafic rocks that formed along the contact is known as the Platreef. Associated with the sul­ phide mineralization are important concentrations of platinum-group metals, copper and nickel. Xenoliths of Malmani dolo­ mite have been incorporated into the Platreef and previous work has suggested that anhydrite is likely to have been present in the dolomite. The sedimentarv-derived sulphur thus introduced into the magma exercised an important control on the forma­ tion of the sulphides.Petrographic studies on the Platreef rocks from the Tweefontein area indicate that the original magma reacted with the banded ironstone to form iron-rich pyroxenites. In the Turfspruit area, to the south, the footwall rocks consist of sediments of the Timeball Hill Series. Original argillaceous rocks have been metamorphosed to cordierite-, corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses. Graphite was present in the contact zone in both the Tweefontein and Turfspruit areas. Anhydrite-bearing hornfels rocks are also present on Turfspruit.The Platreef rocks that overlie the corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses on Turfspruit are peridotitie, and pyroxenites are present in areas underlain by cordierite-bearing hornfels. The absence of orthopyroxene in the peridotite is probably indicative of low silica activity in the original magma. The pyroxenites have, however, undergone silica contamination from the underlying more siliceous cordierite hornfels.Carbon isotope studies indicate that the graphite in the Tweefontein and Turfspruit samples represents organic material orig­ inally associated with the footwall sediments. Sulphur isotope determinations on the anhydrite-bearing floor rocks indicate that this phase is clearly of sedimentary origin and was probably derived from an evaporitic unit within the carbonate sequence. This provides firm support for a model of ore genesis that involved the introduction of additional sulphur into the Bushveld magma. Isotope studies on sulphides associated with the banded ironstone and graphite indicate that these units were not the source of additional sulphur. Experimental studies predict, however, that a magma contaminated with iron- and carbon-rich material would have a high sulphur-carrying capacity. Where additional sulphur is available the magma would achieve saturation early in its crystallization history and precipitate an immiscible sulphide phase. Experimental work has also shown that sulphide precipi­ tation can be triggered by the introduction of salic material into a magma close to sulphur saturation. This mechanism probably played a role in the control of the sulphide mineralization in the Turfspruit area."

Klipspruit Colliery is experiencing coal losses, which leads to a negative impact on coal production and subsequently loss in revenue. This study aimed to identify the possible causes of coal losses in the No. 4 upper and lower seams. The objectives were to identify potential sources of coal losses through a literature survey, to identify areas where the coal losses occurred, to determine factors affecting coal losses, and to identify the most cost-effective methods to reduce coal losses. Highwall losses, top-of-coal losses, and coal edge losses were identified as the major areas of coal loss at Klipspruit. These losses were mostly attributed to the drilling and blasting practises of the pre-split, interburden waste, and the coal seams. Recommendations include re-visiting the current pre-split design and the tolerances adopted for the interburden and coal seam drilling and blasting design. It is furthermore recommended that Klipspruit implement a continuous improvement plan for the drilling and blasting and refresher training for the blasting crew and operators.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to estimate what effects the underground mining of thick coal seams in the western United Slates would have on the surrounding water resources. Potential coal fields in the western United States where this type of mining might occur were identified. The foreign literature was searched for studies of effects on hydrology from thick seam underground coal mining. Based on the limited information obtained from the foreign literature, estimates of the effects of this type of mining on the ground and surface water in the western states were made.

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

The Pacheco Pumping Plant is situated on the west end of San Luis Reservoir in western Merced County, California. It is designed to draw water from the reservoir and pump it into a 3,500,000 gallon regulating tank. The water then flows entirely by gravity to the Coyote Pump Station in Morgan Hill, a distance of 40 miles, where it is pumped into Anderson Reservoir. This water is used to recharge the depleted groundwater table in the Santa Clara Valley. Eventually, some of the water will be diverted to Hollister in San Benito County and to Watsonville and Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County. The owner is the United States Bureau of Reclamation. The underground work consisted of a fifteen foot finished diameter surge shaft 250 feet deep to the crown of the pump chamber; a twenty foot finished diameter pump chamber which declined from the shaft at 14.2% for ninety feet and then ran horizontally for 180 feet; and twelve each five foot diameter steel lined intake shafts 240 feet deep which intersect the pump chamber in the horizontal section. (Figure 1) Upon completion of the pump chamber, the contractor had to dewater the existing tunnel under the reservoir, excavate the remaining fifteen foot plug, and concrete the transition. The low bidder for this contract was Underground - Continental-Heller at 414,456,000. Excavation of the open cut for the pumping plant and surge shaft began on April 14, 1983. This was performed using a Koehring 1066D backhoe, dozer, trucks, and two Cat 631 scrapers. The excavation was started at the surge shaft so that the grouting could begin

Bahrain's oil revenue increased from $337 million2 in 1916 to $378 million in 1977. Despite the increase in value, petroleum receipts made up only 584 of all Government income in 1877, compared with 74% in 1976 and 83% in 1975. Bahrain became an oil producer in 1932 with the discovery of the Awali oilfield, and since that time, the Awali oilfield has produced over 600 million barrels of crude oil. Awali production in 1977 was 21.2 million barrels. Bahrain shares the revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf north of Bahrain, equally with Saudi Arabia. Revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield was approximately $179 million or 47% of oil revenues in 1977. Output from the Abu Safah oilfield was 48 million barrels, an increase of nearly 30% over 1976 output. The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO). the nation's only oil-producing company, was owned 40% by California Texas Oil Corp. (CALTEX and 60% by the Govern¬ment. The Government established Bahrain National Oil Co. (BANOCO) in 1976 to administer the Government's share of BAPCO, oversee exploration concessions, and manage domestic marketing of petroleum products. The Government announced its intention to acquire 100% control of crude oil and natural gas production. CALTEX was to retain complete control of the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery near Sitrah.

A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. Request for a copy of the program should be directed to the Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center.
