The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. Minproc Resources Inc. is developing a tailings retreatment project in Bolivia at the Colquiri zinc-tin-silver mine, in the Bolivian Andes. Mining at Colquiri has been continuous since 1940 and COMIBOL, the Bolivian state mining company, has owned and operated the underground mine since 1964. There are 10 million tonnes of tailings at Colquiri containing 0.51% Sn, 4.21% Zn and 50 g/t Ag. Minproc plans to mine and concentrate the tailings at 1.15 million tonnes per year to produce feed for pyrometallurgical upgrading. The tailings are moderately complex, with cassiterite grain size ranging from 200 to 5 pm. The marmatite (ZnFeS) in the tailings is relatively easily recovered, with zinc recovery of 80% to a 40%-45% Zn concentrate. The major problem with the zinc metallurgy is that the marmatite is complexed with iron, which results in iron contents of 14%-17% Fe in concentrate. This makes the product very difficult to sell because of the low Zn:Fe ratio. Most zinc smelters require a Zn:Fe ratio of 6:1 or 7:1, whereas this concentrate has a 3:1 ratio. Concentrate sale terms are therefore unfavorable, and the high cost of transportation from Bolivia to the smelters is an additional burden.

"Freeze lining technologies are used industrially to protect the integrity of furnace walls in pyrometallurgical reactors. This is achieved by solidifying a protective layer of slag on the inner furnace wall. In the current study, laboratory experiments have been undertaken to produce freeze linings in ‘Cu2232 O’-‘FeO’-MgO-SiO slags under controlled conditions using an air-cooled probe technique. Whilst most thermal models of freeze linings have assumed the freeze lining-bath interface to be at the liquidus temperature of the bulk bath and to be planar in geometry, the current research has demonstrated that this is not the case. Experiments undertaken using this high-temperature slag system have shown the interface at steady state conditions to be at subliquidus temperatures. The solid phases present at the interface do not include the primary phase and the interface is non-planar. The study indicates the need for improved understanding of the fundamentals of freeze lining formation, and of the influence of system properties and process parameters"

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

Timber decay is due largely if not wholly to a fungus growth on the timber from which it derives' food; a warm, moist atmosphere is necessary for rapid growth. The decay is spread from infected timber to sound timber by countless microscopic spores or seeds given off by the fungus growth and carried by air currents or by long, cottonlike threads, which spread from timber to timber. Haulage roads in most mines in the central coal fields are also return aircourses; hence moisture and temperature conditions are ideal for the rapid decay of mine ties and mine timber. Possibly the return air, which contains a higher percentage of carbon dioxide than normal outside air, also stimulates the growth of fungi. Those familiar with coal mining have observed the more pronounced growth of fungi and decay of timber in poorly ventilated worked-out sections of mines where the air is moist and where usually the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is considerably above normal.

Federal laws mandate the presence of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines and provide guidelines for harmful gas removal. After an explosion, harmful gases can follow survivors into an RA and can reach a deadly concentration. Investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested 12 ventilation system configurations (VSCs) to purge sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas from a built-in-place (BIP) RA in the Experimental Mine in Bruceton, PA. Using a borehole air supply, tests were conducted with airflows of 750 and 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). Excluding a VSC where the air inlet was 1.98 m (78 in) from the air outlet, the results show that the time to purge the SF6 concentration from 1,000 parts per million (ppm) to 25 ppm ranged from 26 to 29 minutes for an airflow of 750 SCFM and ranged from 18 to 23 minutes for an airflow 1,000 SCFM. Mines can use this information to reduce purge time in case of a mine disaster and determine which VSC to avoid. INTRODUCTION After a fire or an explosion in an underground mine, the concentration of carbon monoxide can reach a fatal level. In a mine disaster, the main goal is to escape. However, if miners cannot escape, they have to migrate to a location to find refuge and, if possible, communication, and a borehole source for a fresh air supply. To ensure survival of the miners, Federal laws mandate the presence of a refuge alternative (RA) within 304.5 m (1,000 ft) of the nearest mining face. In addition, Code of Federal Regulations Title 30 CFR Section 7 sets the guidelines for personnel tracking, RAs, and the removal of noxious gases in underground coal mines (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). Federal regulations define an RA as a protected, secure space with an isolated atmosphere and integrated components (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). There are three types of RAs: portable metal RAs, portable tent-type RAs, and built-in-place (BIP) RAs. A BIP RA is constructed using masonry or other stoppings to create an isolated space in a mined-out area. Blast doors are installed in one or both of the stoppings for the miners to enter the RA. Furthermore, RAs must provide the following components: breathable air, food, water, air monitoring, and harmful gas removal. Federal regulations have emphasized the mandate for breathable air and harmful gas removal in the following words: “Purging or other effective procedures shall be provided for the airlock to dilute the carbon monoxide concentration to 25 ppm” (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). The purpose of the mine ventilation system is to provide a sufficient quantity of air to the underground mine workings, to dilute methane and other contaminants, to maintain a suitable working environment, and to prevent accidents from happening (Cheng and Wei, 2014). In addition, the organic nature of coal amplifies risks from poisonous gases, explosions, and fires (Engström et al., 2018). If an underground coal mine ventilation system fails after an explosion, the concentration of toxic gases, most notably carbon monoxide, will increase. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it creates tissue hypoxia by binding to hemoglobin (Özmen and Aksoy, 2015).

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the causes and consequences of longwall face sloughage. Theoretical relationships were developed to evaluate mechanisms that produce slough age. From these relationships, contributory factors were identified for further analysis in field efforts. A survey identified 12 mine sites with sloughage problems, and these were investigated. From these studies, it was determined that the depth of cover and mining height are the two most significant factors causing sloughage on longwall faces. Coalbed friability and cleat orientation also were found to be significant factors in promoting sloughage. It was concluded that sloughage is primarily a problem in thicker seams or seams with friable coalbeds, and that the problem is more severe as the depth of cover increases. Sloughage also was found to increase as the rate of mining decreased. Observations indicated that face slough age can increase dust generation significantly on longwall faces. Current efforts to control dust generation from longwall sloughage are described.

Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."

The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. "In this paper, experiences from Polish non-ferrous metals ores enrichment plants in the copper and blende concentrates quality improvement are discussed. The blende concentrate being produced in ZGH Boleslaw S.A., with Zn content of about 54,5% is characterized by the relatively high magnesium content reaching a level of 1% resulting from the dolomite presence, while for the zinc production by electrowinning a concentrate in which magnesium content should not exceed 0,3% is required. The implemented new technology for the quality improvement of blende concentrate is based on the leaching of zinc concentrate with sulfuric acid aimed at dissolving of the contained dolomite, and then flotation of the leached concentrate. It allows to obtain a concentrate with magnesium content below 0,1% at the simultaneously increased zinc content to about 57,5%. In the paper, laboratory tests results on the development of optimal flotation flowsheet for the gypsum removal and the industrial tests results concerning the process optimization of this flotation are discussed. In turn, the copper concentrate being produced in Polish copper ore enrichment plants KGHM PM S.A., is characterized by the increased organic carbon content - above 8%. It creates problems with the smelting of this concentrate because of difficulties with the heat removal derived from the combustion of organic carbon in the flash smelting process. The implementation of segregating flotation to the industrial practice allows the effective production of two concentrates with the differentiated chemical compositions - a concentrate with increased copper content and reduced organic carbon content for the flash smelting process, and a concentrate with lower copper content and increased organic carbon content for the shaft smelting process. In the paper, conditions of the segregating flotation and the achieved results are described."

A method was developed for calibrating photographic emulsions and retrieving working curves for emission spectrography. The values obtained from a digital readout or a recorder chart of a comparator-microphotometer are converted to light intensity values using an emulsion characteristic curve derived from a quartic polynomial preliminary curve. The characteristic curve, consisting of Seidel transform versus the logarithm of intensity, is split into two cubic polynomials at the zero value of the transform, resulting in eight emulsion calibration coefficients. These methods allow use of the calibration curves even at very small and very high intensities, thus extending the range of analysis. Use of a small computer allows rapid calculations. A computer program was written to formulate, code, and file each working curve along with its statistical error. Proper coding of the input data permits the direct printout of the concentration of the elements under investigation.

A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

"High-level radioactive wastes are stored in large underground storage tanks made of low-carbon steel. The wastes consist of concentrated solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the radionuclides 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV), which in turn modifies the kinetics of corrosion of the storage tank. To understand the influence of technetate ions on the corrosion of steel, electrochemical polarization studies of A 537 steel samples were carried out in 1 M NaNO3 + 0 .05 M S r(NO3)2 + 0.1 M NaOH with and without addition of HReO4 at different temperatures (24 – 85 °C). The concentration of HReO4 was varied from 0.014 – 0.04 M.INTRODUCTIONAqueous processing of spent nuclear materials generates a large amount of high-level radioactive wastes. The wastes are primarily salt solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate which also contain fission products such as 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. Among the high level radioactive fission products, Tc-99 is of great importance because of its high concentration, long half-life (2.1 x 105 years), high solubility in geologic waters as technetate, and rapid diffusivity through the geologic systems. The solubility of technetate ions varies depending on the oxidizing conditions prevailing in the storage containers. High level radioactive wastes are stored in single shell or double shell tanks made of low carbon steels such as ASTM type A15, A516-70 and A537. Most of the available literature on corrosion of steel in simulated radio active waste environments pertains to nitrate induced stress corrosion cracking (Subramanian & Mickalonis, 2005). The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV). Corrosion of steel and formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) will affect adsorption and reduction of Tc species. The radioactive species can irreversibly be sorbed on the steel surface by oxidation of Fe(II) to more stable Fe(III) and fixed as less soluble Tc(IV)/Fe(III). The solubility of Tc species is also affected by other factors such as dissolved oxygen, local pH, temperature etc. How the corrosion behavior of steel will be affected in the presence of Tc species is not clearly understood.Cartledge (Cartledge, 1960) demonstrated that passivation of iron can be achieved in the presence of oxygen along with suitable inhibitor ions/molecules of the general formula XO4 n-, such as pertechnetate (TcO4 -). The pertechnetate ion is univalent. Since it is derived from a strong acid, no buffering action can be expected from this ion. The redox potential of the reaction (1) is 0.738 VSHE (Pourbaix, 1974)."

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective. Computerized microscopic techniques were used to determine the size and identity of the ash-forming mineral components, as well as their association with the organic coal matrix, in order to aid in the development of physical methods of beneficiation which require such characterization for the most effective cleaning. Examples of particle size measurements, mineral phase identification, and especially coal-mineral association results are given for selected samples of raw and physically cleaned coals. These measurements can reveal certain characteristics of coals which can be be of significant value in predicting coal recovery and mineral matter rejection for coals undergoing beneficiation.

The United States Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information regarding the details of its organization and the nature of its activities. In response to such an inquiry a series of articles outlining the work of the bureau as a whole and of its different divisions was prepared and published in the United States Daily, Washington, D. C., during November, 1929. These articles are reprinted here in the hone that they may assist in giving the public a more complete understanding of the aims and purposes of the bureau and the methods by which it is laboring for the attainment of safer conditions and more efficient methods in American mineral industries. Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015.
