"We analyzed two copper and lead flotation concentrates from the LaRonde mill using MLA technology (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) to identify the contaminants and to quantify their size and liberation. The MLA mineral quantification was compared with traditional mineralogical techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Chemistry). The accuracy of MLA data was then quantify in application to metallurgical decision (mineral identification, mineral quantification, particle sizing and liberation quantification). We prepared five well-known materials from pure minerals and analysed them by MLA. MLA concentrates analyses showed the lead concentrate is mainly contaminated by pyrite and sphalerite. These minerals are liberated above 70 % and present a floatable size around 15 to 35 µm. Surface activation by dissolved lead from galena is therefore assumed for these contaminants. The analyses of the known samples show that mineral quantification and size distribution given by the MLA are consistent with the chemical analyses and the laser particle sizer. The liberation measurement is affected by the stereological effect. Modelling quantifies the overestimation of the particle liberation. Based on the modelling, the stereological shift on liberation should not impact metallurgical conclusions on the concentrate contaminations.INTRODUCTIONTo face the diversity of mineral processing challenges, the process mineralogy includes phase quantification, measurement of mineral size, liberation by exposure and by grade, association, surface contact proportion and texture. In the last decades, two SEM commercial tools emerged: MLA and QEMSCAN R. Both are based on specific combinations of backscattered electrons and X-ray images as well as image analysis routines developed at CANMET (Petruk & Pinard, 1976, Petruk, 1989), CSIRO (Frost, O'Hara, Suddaby, Grant, Reid, Wilson & Zuiderwyk, 1977, Reid, Gottlieb, MacDonald, & Miller, 1984) and JKMRC (Hall, 1977, Gu & Sugden, 1995). Recently, TIMA (TESCAN) and Mineralogic MiningR (ZEISS) supplied automated mineralogy for mining industry (Bouzahzah, Benzaazoua, Graham & Cropp, 2015, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015a). In parallel, home-made routine were developped to resolve mineralogy challenges in mineral process but also in geometallurgy and mining environment (Kahn, Mano, & Tassinari, 2002, Knight, Klassen & Hunt, 2002, Mermillod-Blondin, Benzaazoua, Kongolo, de Donato, Bussiere & Marion, 2011, Hunt & Bradshaw, 2015). SEM mineralogy become essential to operation by setting units on mine sites (MacDonald, Latti, Adair, Bradshaw, & Dunn, 2011, Goergen et al., 2013, Dobbe et al., 2014, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015b)."

It is important to define "adequacy," and the most useful definition is a continuing availability of mineral materials under cost and other conditions which imply no significant burden on the achievement of otherwise attainable levels of consumption and well-being. For current decision making, it is sufficient to consider adequacy just to the end of the century, with some regard being given to then remaining mineral inventory. A comparison of cumulative demand projections to the year 2000 with already identified reserves ( economically recoverable amounts in known deposits) suggests little reason for concern with world adequacy of iron ore, aluminum, manganese, chromium or potash. Conservative estimates of "prospective" reserves (amounts producible at today's prices, but yet to be discovered) suggests that there are ample quantities of virtually all other mineral resources as well. A probable exception is oil and gas, of which there may be scant amounts remaining after the turn of the century. However, there is an evident sufficiency of substitute forms of energy, though it is difficult to see just where developing technology will take us. The critical questions have to do with the increasing dependence of the industrialized countries on external sources of supply , coupled with a new international politic s which complicates the problem of insuring timely development of, and access to, remaining deposits. In this context, Canada, a still mineral-rich nation, is in one of the more favorable positions.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. "The hydraulic transport of solids through pipelines can have many advantages over other modes of transport. Numerous successful applications both within plants and over longer distances have demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of slurry pipelining. Solids successfully transported include kaolin, coal, iron ore, gilsonite and limestone, and others, such as sulphur and potash, are likely to be transported in Canada in the near future. However, though the technology of solids pipelining is quite advanced the underlying principles have not yet been formulated past the semi-empirical stage. The main objective of this paper is to present a discussion of the important technical and economic considerations in the design of so lids pipeline systems by reference to typical data. The Worthington slurry pumps and pilot facilities are briefly described."

Surface subsidence is an inevitable consequence of many underground mining operations and has been recognized as such since the fifteenth century. Damage resulting from this phenomenon ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings and has been witnessed in rural (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania) as well as in urban areas (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Wyoming). In fact, it is estimated that over 2 million acres of land across the United States have been affected by mining subsidence, of which 140,000 acres are in urban areas (Singh, 1978; Johnson and Miller, 1979). Further, it is estimated that during the next twenty years an additional 1.5 to 2.4 million acres of land will also be affected by mining. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technologic and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Foreign experience has demonstrated, however, that subsidence can be successfully controlled if an accurate method of predicting ground movements is available. Such techniques have been developed in many coalfields, where it is currently accepted that subsidence can be predicted within ± 20 percent of the actual values. Furthermore, such movements can be translated into anticipated structural failures using established damage criteria, thus enabling appropriate precautionary measures to be implemented.

Underground longwall coal mining sections may develop explosive mixtures of methane-air in the mined-out gobs. If the panel are operated as bleederless or sealed gobs, progressive sealing along the gate roads as the longwall face retreats limits the flow of fresh air into the gob and thus deprives potentially explosive atmospheres of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to simulate the flow of gases in longwall gobs. Modelling indicates that targeted injection of nitrogen through the seals along the gate roads inbye the face can be used to control the size and location of methane and air clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures in longwall gobs.

The operating principles and design of the Model 16 are discussed and a case study presented to demonstrate the use of sorters to process an industrial mineral. In addition, an economic study is presented, to highlight the benefits of ore sorting, by evaluating the increased revenue that can be achieved using an ore sorter to process a particular ore body.

The Office of Coal Research Program has been outlined in our Annual Report for a number of years and reported on by various members of the OCR staff as well as by our contractors. The program is national in scope and is intended to develop new and improved uses for our Nation's coal resources and to maintain coal in a favorable economic position, vis-a-vis, the other energy forms. A program has been developed that includes conversion of coal to gas, gasoline and other petroleum-type products, and to electricity. These projects are only one facet of the OCR program albeit an important one. In many of the conversion projects we have underway, original development work has been done with bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. It is the intention of this paper to present a general outline as to how lignite might fit into one or more of these projects as a raw material. Our national lignite reserves are vast in scope and this has been recognized in the OCR program by development of a project specifically for lignite and by including lignite as a test raw material in many other projects. Project Lignite is intended to develop the Cop Acceptor Process for conversion of lignite to a high B.t.u. gas. In this effort we have included the design, construction, and operation of a lignite gasification plant at Rapid City, South Dakota. The work is being conducted by the Consolidation Coal Company and is an outgrowth of their laboratory development of this process. The first portion of our effort included a detailed economic study of a somewhat arbitrary grouping of States designated Market Area A that could be expected to use gas manufactured in a lignite gasification plant. The area included the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. This geographical area could readily be served if a process could be developed for converting North Dakota's lignite reserves, estimated at 351 billion tons, to high B.t.u. gas. Our study showed that Market Area A had a potential commercial- industrial market of one trillion cubic feet of gas a year. To meet this demand, we believe that part of the load can be obtained from commercial lignite-to-gas plants. At the time of our original study, we concluded that gas could be delivered to the city gate in Market Area A at about 45¢. As a result of price escalation in the interim, our estimate today might be slightly higher, but not significantly so, since some parts of the process appear better today than they did at the time of the original projection.

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise-induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise- induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise-induced hearing loss. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard SecoS215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock debris, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via an exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Penetration rate was somewhat improved compared to that of the standard drill, so that productivity could be maintained. Keywords: Drill, rock drill, quiet, noise, mine, underground.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

The process of converting iron ore (principally Fe,03 or Fe30,) into iron carbide (Fe,C) to be used as feedstock for steel-making yields complex mixtures of several Fe-containing compounds as a function of processing conditions. In addition to the above compounds (hematite, magnetite and cementite), the mixtures typically contain wustite (FeO) and metallic iron(Fe). Mossbauer spectroscopy has been developed into aquantitative analytical method for monitoring the degree of conversion to carbide from samples periodically extracted from a fluidized bed reactor type of pilot plant. Calibration of absolute quantities of the above five compounds is based on standards prepared from known mixtures of the high purity individual phases. The PC-based spectrometer allows fitting of the well-known spectral components of each of the five phases, the resulting spectral areas then being compared with the calibration curves via PC software to yield the weight fraction of each. Emphasis has been placed on standardizing and simplifying the analysis procedure for routine use in an industrial environment.

Two types of graphite, classified according to particle size as flake and fines, are used, but the former is in much greater demand. The principal wartime use of graphite is in the manufacture of crucibles for melting brass and special alloys of copper and steel. Other uses in both peace and war are as lubricants, for foundry facings, and in paints, electrodes, batteries, motor and generator brushes, and a variety of other commodities. . This paper describes the operations of the Southwestern Graphite Co. of Los Angeles, Calif., which produces both flake and fine graphite from a property in Burnet County, Tex.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. These variables should allow any operator and short-term planner to take action in mines operated with conventional panel caving in a complex geotechnical environment.CITATION:Rivera, N, Music, A and Cisternas, C, 2016. Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. These processes are performed both dry and/or wet resulting in powdered or slurry end products.
