THE EL TIGRE MINE is a highgrade silver and gold producer located in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico. It has been worked continuously since 1903, producing 50,000.000 oz. of silver and returning handsome dividends. During 1930 and 1931 falling silver prices compelled the Tigre company to make representations before the Department of Labor in Mexico City showing the necessity for drastic reductions in wages and personnel. The delays in obtaining permission from the Federal Labor Board to make these readjustments caused the company to suffer considerable financial loss during those years. After the reduction in operations was finally effected, the Sonora state government headed by Señor Francisco Elias (former Governor, now Secretary of Agriculture) and Señor Rodolfo Elias Calles (present Governor and eldest son of Señor Plutarco Elias Calles, recently Secretary of War and former President of Mexico) have cooperated with the company to make continued operation possible by revising downward certain state taxes that would have been a factor in forcing the closing of this mine. Also, permission to change our workmen over to another system of mining was essential to continued operation.

The characteristics of each ore make it impossible to predict the quality of a flotation concentrate without exploratory tests. The research begins with laboratory batch tests, and then, after advances in the determination of process conditions, the complexity of the tests increases in order to evaluate new parameters. The closed cycle test (LCT) simulate circuits with load recirculation and the greatest difficulty of this test is to stabilize the circuit and achieve equilibrium. Depending on mass availability, the types of tests that offer the highest reliability and informations about flotation in an ongoing process are mini-scale or pilot-scale tests. This work aimed to compare the results of the flotation tests in three scales (batch test, LCT and mini pilot) for the Bonsucesso ore, a new deposit, owned by Nexa Resources, that has sphalerite, zinc ore, and galena, lead ore. In the open flotation circuit of galena was obtained 27.57% content with 26.70% recovery, in the LCT test the content was 31.54% with 64.64% recovery and in the mini pilot reached 51.22 % content with 65.51% recovery. In the open sphalerite flotation the zinc content was 55.51% with 77.35% recovery, in the LCT test the zinc content was 56.71% with 84.42% of recovery and in the mini pilot of 50.02% content with 94.54% recovery.

In Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, a molybdenite floatation concentrate was produced by selective removal of copper impurities with 7 stages of cleaner floatation banks, that contains around 1% copper and 54.5% molybdenum. Mineralogical studies, physical and chemical characterizations showed that the sample contained 91% molybdenite (MoS2), 2.6% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), 0.2%Covellite (CuS), 1.6% pyrite (FeS2) and 4.6% other nonmetallic impurities. In the present study, the removal of the copper sulfide was investigated by ferric chloride leaching for achieving a molybdenite concentrate with copper content less than 0.3%. Therefore, the application of response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling and optimization of the influence of three control parameters including ferric chloride (FeCl3) dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time, each varying in five levels, were considered, and the mathematical model for prediction of %Cu removal from molybdenite concentrate was derived. This study showed that RSM could effectively be applied for the modeling of ferric chloride leaching, and finding an economical optimum condition to achieve maximum de-coppering efficiency while consuming minimum leaching reagents. The optimum dissolution conditions to maximize Cu extraction were 200 kg/t for ferric chloride dosage, 120 min for reaction time and 80 °C for reaction temperature with a prediction of 83.20% Cu dissolution. "In early 2014, Pan American Silver Corp. commenced a project to construct a second shaft at its La Colorada underground mine located in Zacatecas State in Mexico. This was the first new shaft development project undertaken by Pan American Silver in the history of the company. The existing mine workings permitted the use of a raise bore for the excavation of the shaft opening, utilizing directional drilling in poor ground conditions to advance the pilot hole. This was an interesting project with many challenges and successes, and numerous lessons learned. The project was successfully completed in 2016, with the shaft operating at full mine production capacity within weeks. INTRODUCTION The La Colorada Mine has a long history dating from at least the 1920’s. The mine is located in the northern portion of Zacatecas State in Mexico in the Chalchihuites area, an approximate two hour drive south from the city of Durango. Pan American Silver acquired the La Colorada mining concessions in 1998, with mine production at that time consisting of only a few hundred tonnes per day. Over the course of the following 15 years, with the addition of an oxide processing plant and some expansions to the sulphide processing plant and site infrastructure, production was eventually increased to a maximum of 1,250 tonnes per day, all of it generated from conventional cut-and-fill stopes in the underground mine. An existing shaft was used to hoist the ore to surface, and over the years Pan American Silver had deepened the shaft and had changed out some of the hoisting plant. However, there were historic workings in close proximity to the shaft that made it unsuitable for personnel transport, and shaft maintenance was becoming difficult. The shaft was increasingly considered as a risk to the long term production continuity, and also to further deepening of the mine. In addition, expanding the capacity of this old shaft was not possible. Drilling of the La Colorada mineralization at depth commenced in 2010, with very good exploration success. As a result, by the end of 2013, the mine reserves had grown to a total of 6.5 million tonnes of high grade ore (388 g/t Ag, 0.36 g/t Au, 2.4 % Zn, and 1.3% Pb). Furthermore there were more (and higher grade) sulphide reserves than oxide reserves at depth. Following the completion of an internal study in 2013 with assistance from one of the international shaft contractors, a decision was made to increase the production from the mine with the construction of a new shaft and a new sulphide processing plant, a project with a calculated payback of 2.2 years."

In 1990, Canada produced 69.4 million tonnes of coal of which some 65 million tonnes was produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia produce approximately 55 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces also provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5m to over 8m. Most of the Canadian surface mines are large (over one million tonnes per annum) using modern mining equipment such as shovels, high capacity trucks and draglines. At present the industry is going through another of its up and down cycles but has continued to make impressive gains in productivity. This has been achieved through greater mechanization, better management practices and a will to succeed in a highly competitive world market. This paper presents an insight into the current status of the Canadian Coal Industry and essentially updates the information given by the authors at previous SME meetings.

Knowledge of initial ground pressures or in-situ stresses and mechanical properties and geological conditions is of great importance in drivage and maintenance of a mine roadway. Field measurements of the in-situ stresses and the geological and mechanical properties have been carried out. However, these methods are really impractical in using in underground mines. Alternatively, back analysis method using measured displacements during drivage of roadway can be used. The paper presents discussion on some problems in applying inverse formulation of back analysis to a roadway driven in an in- homogeneous rock mass. The back analysis is formulated by 2-0 finite element method. The inverse procedure is carried out using a microcomputer, but for the multi-rock layer, a larger computer or a main-frame computer is used due to an iterative procedure.

Direct mineral carbonation has been investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2 into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results have been achieved using heat pretreated serpentine feed material and high partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2). Specific conditions include: 155°C; P002=185 atm; 15% solids. Under these conditions, 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy has been utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products, and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths.

Artificial cassiterite was prepared for these tests by high-temperature methods, especially by crystallization from borax melts.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, just over 20 per cent of Australian mineral exploration expenditure was dedicated to iron ore, totalling >A$8 billion and >30 million metres of drilling (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Improvements in the cost, efficiency, safety, reliability and data quality of drilling have the potential to deliver significant productivity improvements, increasing the probability of discovery and reducing the time from discovery to mining. Currently in its third year of research, Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) is focused on a new set of exploration tools and new ways to deploy those tools which recognise the fundamental importance of collecting quantity and quality data from the subsurface, to enable exploration success for all minerals, including iron ore. MinEx CRC is focused on developing more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling methods to discover and drill-out deposits. This includes pioneering work on Coil Tube (CT) drilling technology and innovations in Diamond and Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling techniques aimed at improved drilling optimisation and automation. In parallel, MinEx is developing new technologies for collecting data whilst drilling. This is being undertaken in four separate industry-led projects utilising geophysical, seismic, downhole analytical and 3-dimensional (3D) modelling improvements. A National Drilling Initiative (NDI) is also underway, with two drilling programs completed in 2020. The NDI is a world-first collaboration of Geological Surveys, researchers and industry, which undertakes drilling in under-explored areas of potential mineral wealth in Australia and provides a test-bed for new mineral exploration technologies.

Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014. The Snettisham Peninsula, 30 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska, was studied by the Bureau of Hines to obtain basic information about the size, grade, and metallurgical characteristics of a large basic intrusive containing titaniferous magnetite. The investigation, which was part of a continuing program to determine the potential reserves of iron and titanium ores in Alaska, included transit and magnetometer surveys, followed by diamond core drilling and metallurgical testing. The magnetic attraction of a part of the Snettisharn Peninsula is noted on early navigational charts prepared by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Reconnaissance examinations by the Geological Survey and a preliminary dip needle survey by the Territorial Department of Mines indicated the general nature of the basic intrusive, but little was known as to the grade and extent of the magnetite mineralization. The detailed survey by the Bureau of Mines proved an area of approximately 390 acres in which generally high magnetic anomalies with exceptionally high localized anomalies occur. Subsequent drilling across B representative section of the deposit yielded core samples, which assayed from 11 percent to over 45 percent total iron. A large sample of core composited to represent the drilled portion of the de-posit assayed 18.9 percent Fe, 2.6 percent Ti02, and 0.29 percent S, 0.32 percent P, and 0.05 percent v.

This paper is primarily a report on the process of using oolitic aragonite, as received from Marconi& Ocean Industries, Ltd. without further processing, for a major portion of the raw feed to a rotary kiln producing cement clinker. Oolitic aragonite is a high purity calcium carbonate material, dust free, with the appearance of a course, white sand. It is farmed when under the right conditions of temperature ocean currents, and ocean floor topography. The calcium carbonate will precipitate into small spherical particles on the ocean floor. These oceanic conditions are correct to cause precipitation of the calcium carbonate near Ocean Cay in the Bahama Island chain. The present growing deposit near Ocean Cay is in the billions of tons and is mined by a relatively shallow-operation hydraulic dredge. The aragonite thus formed is en orthorhombic crystaline form of calcium carbonate with a specific gravity of approximately 2.9. At a temperature of 505°C. (940F), the aragonite converts to the hexagonal crystal of calcite with a specific gravity of 2.6 to 2.7. This change in specific gravity weakens the structure of the particles but the individual pieces are still fairly hard. When the material is then calcined at 900°C (1650°F), the particles retain their shape but become soft and will break up under finger pressure.

Introduction The Little Long Lac mine is situated in the Thunder Bay mining district, township of Errington, Ontario. The mine is located on the south side of the most westerly bay of Little Long Lac. The property consists of 36 claims, which comprise some 1,400 acres. This group of claims was staked in August, 1932, by Tony Oklend and Tom Johnson, and, after surface sampling, was optioned by the present controlling interests, who diamond-drilled it during the winter of 1932-33. In early spring, a small steam-driven plant was installed, and shaft sinking commenced on June 1st, 1933. During the summer, all supplies are transported to the mine from Hardrock station, at mileage 18 on the Canadian National Railway line from Longlac to Port Arthur. At Hardrock, which is seven miles from the mine, the railway skirts a bay of Little Long Lac, and supplies are loaded directly from railway cars to scows. Two scows are used, of 30-and 45-ton capacity, respectively. A 36-ft. pointer, powered by a 35 h.p. engine, is used as a tug. A good winter-road has been cut out from Geraldton to the mine, for winter transportation. Geraldton is about two miles north of the mine, and is also located on the Canadian National railway. A hard-surface road is now being constructed for summer as well as winter use. Geology The Little Long Lac gold area covers the northern limits of a large synclinal structure, the contact of the Keewatin flows and sediments, striking about twenty degrees north of west, with the dip of the sediments varying from eighty degrees north to seventy degrees south, the average being around eighty degrees south. The vein worked by Little Long Lac Gold Mines occurs in massive sedimentary rock of about the composition of arkosic or quartzitic greywacke, and consists of a shear-zone up to fifteen feet in width, striking N.75°E. and dipping steeply to the south, which has been filled by numerous narrow, parallel quartz veins and. veinlets. These are well mineralized. with arsenopyrite, pyrite, and some chalcopyrite and stibnite, and carry considerable quantities of visible gold. They show more than one age of quartz deposition, the quartz being fractured and re-cemented. The arkosic rocks separating the veins and veinlets are also slightly mineralized with pyrite. Work to date has indicated the probability that the vein-shear is controlled by local drag-folding.

The majority of water to the Olympic Dam mine and the nearby townships of Roxby Downs and Andamooka is supplied from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB). There are no permanent local water sources available to Olympic Dam. The use of water from the Great Artesian Basin by Olympic Dam receives considerable attention by BHP Billiton and is extensively regulated by the Government of South Australia. Olympic Dam has robust business management systems in place to ensure the sustainable use of water from the GAB including ISO9001 and ISO14001 systems to deliver the targeted outcomes and obligations of the Olympic Dam Environmental Management and Monitoring Program. The management systems ensure that Olympic Dam retains accountability for its water demand from the GAB over the life of the mine. This accountability has delivered continuous improvement in water use efficiency driven by operating discipline, implementation of water saving projects, using water on a fit for purpose basis including substitution from non-GAB sources, and risk management to prevent and mitigate water supply disruptions to Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs. Since the establishment of Olympic Dam, BHP Billiton has funded a reduction in GAB water flow from bores, previously going to waste, that is greater than the annual average flow used by Olympic Dam.

In its, effort to combat waterlogging and coil salinity, the later and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling and water sampling, since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline ground-water-zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh ground water containing generally, less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh ground water extends to depths of 1,500 feet and more. Saline ground water occurs downgradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas and, presumably, underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The ground waters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters, near sources of recharge, to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in Dera Ismail Khan District sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline ground-water zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, downgradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the processes of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year's edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

Hulamin Rolled Products (Ltd) developed a high Mn and Si containing alloy, EN 4017 as a scrap consuming alloy from the waste generated in producing their range of clad products for brazing of inter alia automotive heat exchangers. The multifaceted composition of this alloy (Al -1.2 wt% Si -1.1 wt% Mn -0.2 wt% Mg-0.26 wt% Cu) suggested that it might display some degree of strengthening via precipitate formation of the Mg2 Si-types. The aging isotherms constructed showed that EN 4017 with 0.19% Mg reached a lower peak strength (YS~210 MPa and UTS~260 MPa)compared to the EN 4017 material with 0.43% Mg (YS~270 MPa and UTS~325 MPa). The higher Mg variant of EN 4017 was comparable with the age-hardenable reference alloy EN 6061. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies proved that the microstructure of age hardened EN 4017 contained a combination of ß', ß" and U2 phase after being aged at 175ºC for 65 h. The general microstructure contained precipitate free zones as well as grain boundary Si films, although these did not lead to significant embrittlement. The role of Mn dispersoids in the fracture mechanism of 4017 is also discussed. The article will compare the behaviour of EN 4017 with that EN6061. "A packaged cooling system is being developed for refuge alternatives (RAs) that will meet U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) qualification guidelines for deployment in coal mines. This system will allow full occupancy ratings of deployed refuge alternatives to be maintained by keeping the apparent temperature inside the RA from exceeding 35° C (95° F).Research investigations sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that heat buildup caused by occupants in mobile RAs will result in apparent temperatures that exceed the 35° C (95°F) limit established in 30 CFR 7.504.Figure 1 shows the temperature rise in an inflatable RA having an occupancy rating of 23 people at an 27° C (81°F) mine air temperature. This plot shows the need for either heat mitigation or occupancy derating in warmer mines.The Refuge Alternative Environmental Control System (RAECS) will be designed to provide enough heat mitigation to eliminate occupancy derating due to heat buildup over the 96-hour refuge period.This article describes testing of a prototype cooling system that uses proven vapor compression technology powered by batteries to keep the RA interior below the 35° C (95° F) limit for a minimum of 96 hours. Testing of this prototype cooling system was conducted in December of 2015 and January of 2016 at the NIOSH test mine in Bruceton, PA. December testing was conducted at the prevailing mine ambient temperature — approximately 15.5° C (60° F). The January testing was done with the mine ambient temperature in the immediate vicinity of the RA artificially elevated to 29° C (85° F). Realistic heat gain from RA occupants was provided by human simulators developed by NIOSH. These simulators add sensible heat corresponding to human metabolic processes and latent heat generated by respiration and perspiration. Heat generated by CO2 scrubbers was also added. Results of cooling system performance using these simulated loads at the two ambient conditions are described. A comparison of the apparent temperature in the RA using two different control techniques is also presented. This work documents the ability of the cooling system to meet the established apparent temperature limit at the full occupancy rating of a six person RA. A new cooling system intended for use with existing RA deployments and having greater cooling capacity is currently in development and will be described.Expendable desiccant modules were also used to provide supplemental water vapor removal and their role in mitigating cooling load is addressed."

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.
