Mineral Development Agreements (MDA?s) are a cooperative mechanism in Canada by which the federal and individual provincial governments can coordinate their scientific, techno- logical and market development resources in order to implement measures designed to stimulate mineral exploration and development by the private sector; the objective, ultimately, being to increase the mineral industry?s contribution to provincial economies. In the latest round of MDA?s, which was initiated in 1984, a significant number of planned activities relate to industrial minerals. This paper will describe the nature and importance of MDA's in Canada and will outline the wide range of activities taking place with respect to industrial minerals.

The Bureau of Mines developed cost estimates fur the disposal of phosphate rock washer slimes by pond settling, from a study of the method used at the International Minerals a Chemical Corp., Moralyn Phosphate Operations, Polk County, Fla. Data were obtained by basing phosphate production and slime generation statistics on plant capacity rather than on actual company records. Cost estimates, which were prepared as a guide in evaluating alternative disposal methods and in identifying needed areas of research, could be applicable to any Florida plant using the same disposal method. To conserve mineral resources and to improve environmental conditions, the Bureau recommends further research directed toward developing alternative methods of disposal, including the recovery of water and P205 values from the slimes.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of ignition tests with two types of conical bits (plumb bob and pencil) used on continuous mining machines, to determine their ignition potential at various bit speeds, cut depths, and wear conditions. The tests were conducted using single bits mounted on a 34-in-diam drum in a Bureau ignition test facility. The bits impacted blocks of Berea sandstone in a 6.5 pet methane atmosphere at various bit speeds and cut depths. In a new condition, the plumb bob bits were considerably more incendive than the pencil bits, causing ignitions in 32 of 35 tests at 60 rpm, compared with ignitiolls in 2 of 22 tests for the pencil bits. The results from new bit testing also show that reduction of bit tip velocity to 180 fpm does not eliminate ignition potential. When subjected to progressive wear, bits of both types were more incendive when they were locked in place, unable to rotate, than when they were free to rotate.

Westslope Cutthroat trout have declined in distribution and abundance across their range and currently occupy about 59% of their historic habitat. Due to hybridization with non-native species such as rainbow trout, genetically pure populations persist in only 10% of that range. A westslope cutthroat trout population with relatively high genetic purity (97%) and conservation importance persists in less than two linear stream miles in the headwaters of the South Fork Madison River in southwest Montana. The relative purity of this population has been maintained through the presence of a downstream intermittent reach. However, spring flows fill the intermittent reach, creating a connection between occupied westslope cutthroat trout habitat in the headwaters and the habitat of competing trout species downstream.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Un modèle de démélange linéaire, appliqué pour estimer les minéraux dans le spectre des échantillons de poudres mixtes, indique que ce modèle a atteint une valeur R2 de 0,88. In this research study, the interaction of particles with substrates of different roughness magnitude was investigated. Particle surface treatment, relative humidity (RH), and surface roughness levels were controlled in order to achieve separation of different particles by applying removal forces. Three different approaches to reproducibly roughen surfaces were used. Initially, glass disks were laser engraved to create a reproducible, controlled roughness substrate. However, the laser engraving method produced surface features that were much greater in scale than the particles. These scale differences were such that the substrates produced were not of value to this research. The second option investigated to induce reproducible substrate roughness was to scratch the glass disk using sandpapers of known grain size. A third approach to establish reproducible roughness was to use fine stainless-steel wire mesh substrates. In tests with sanded glass disks, the interfacial energy of plasma-cleaned (hydrophilic) glass beads had a high variation at 40% RH, showing non-uniformity of area of contact between particles and substrates. As the RH increased, it was expected that the interfacial energy of hydrophilic particles would increase, but this behavior was not observed. In addition, comparing the interfacial energy results of hydrophilic particles with hydrophobic particles, a region with significant interfacial energy difference was not identified. In the case of the stainless-steel mesh substrate, the mesh asperities and particle dimensions were comparable. Thus, the smaller particles had more area of contact with the substrate than the larger particles. For the plasma-cleaned (hydrophilic) beads, the recovery values had an average of 92.5% recovery when the RH was between 46 and 85%. For the hydrophobic beads, the average recovery was 19.0% when the RH was between 46 and 75%. Thus, the hydrophobic characteristic of the particle influenced its lower interaction with the mesh substrate. The difference in recovery can be exploited to achieve separation of particles based upon adhesive forces.

Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. The adsorption of uranium onto Wyoming bentonite was measured in carbonate media over the range pH 8-11. Uranium was removed from solution onto the solids by a rapid reaction, proposed to be adsorption of the anionic uranyl tricarbonato complex onto edges of the clay platelets, and a slow reaction which may be precipitation of a hydroxide. The changes in uranium content of the aqueous and solid phases of a uranium ore carbonate leach slurry were also measured as the slurry was progressively diluted. There was an increase in the uranium content of the solids as the pH of the suspension was lowered, as was observed with the Wyoming bentonite. The results indicate the conditions that should be met with respect to pH control in order to prevent the problem of excessive uranium adsorption in the counter-current decantation washing circuit of a conventional leaching process, as well as in the leaching and restoration phases of carbonate solution mining.

The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.

Since 1970 Mount Isa fines Limited has made a significant increase in blister copper production from approximately 100,000 to 155,000 mt per annum and in fact 161,040 mt were produced in the calendar year 1974. Flowsheet developments including fluidised bed roasting and converter slag flotation are discussed, particularly their contributions to minimising major equipment changes in smelting and converting. The use of model- ling and simulation techniques for such an exercise is mentioned. The paper reports the alterations made to both equipment and operating techniques in the reverberatory furnace and converter sections to achieve the regular production of 250 mt of blister per converter day from a 41% Cu matte grade. The effects of flux composition on converting performance are highlighted. The air quality control programme is discussed in relation to its restriction of blister copper production.

This paper will review the metallurgical aspects of the completed expansion program at Quirke, and the current rehabilitation and refurbishing program at Panel. During the Quirke program, completed at the end of 1977, the plant capacity was increased from a nominal 4,500 to 7,000 short tons per milling day. The expansion of crushing, grinding, neutral thickening and filtering, leaching, partial neutralization, sand-slime separation, sand washing, C.C.D., clarification, ion exchange, mine water treatment, and tailings neutralization and pumping will be considered. The application of Enviro-Clear thickeners in the mine water treatment circuit and in the C.C.D. will be briefly reviewed. An automatic grinding and classification circuit for limestone will also be covered. The refurbishing program underway at Panel will be discussed. The Quirke and Panel plants will be contrasted and compared. In particular, reference will be made to environmental considerations. The innovative system for producing yellow cake at Panel, LAMIX, will be considered as well as the proposed treatment system for Panel tailings.

Bedded structure is the characteristics of coal measures strata. Bedding planes, coal streaks and soft rock bands existing in roof strata destroyed its continuity in the direction perpendicular to the coal seams. The statistics from a large number of long wall faces in which serious roof fall accidents occurred in Datong coal mining area suggest that beddings planes, coal streaks, soft rock bands, especially the first layer thickness of immediate roof have a great influence on its stability. As the first layer thickness increases, the probability of serious roof fall accidents decreases. Based on the investigations finite element method is used to analyze stress and displacement in the first layer of immediate roof. The results indicate that the thicker the first layer is, the less the roof convergence in the unsupported area is. Stress and strain features in stratified immediate roof are quite different f7om those in non- bedded immediate roof. In stratified immediate roof, every stratum has each own tensile zone in the upper portion and compressive zone in the lower portion, while tensile zone in the first layer is less, the tensile stress is the greatest.

The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries. Indeed, there are only two alternatives available, namely; (1) Degasify the coal seams prior to mining and use conventional electrical power, or (2) Develop alternate sources of power which would be safer and yet efficient and cheap.

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable coal mine dust causes coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Underground coal mine roof bolter operators are more prone to elevated exposure to coal and silica dust. The canopy air curtain (CAC) was developed by NIOSH to protect roof bolter operators from the exposure. The CAC supplies filtered air over the breathing zone of the operator. This dilutes the high coal dust concentrations and provides for an impenetrable air curtain. Many studies have been carried out to improve CAC efficiency. However, field test has shown variable dust control efficiencies indicating rooms to further improve due to the nonuniform airflow distribution across the plenum and ineffective perimeter flow. This study therefore redesigns the CAC with optimized flow distribution that effectively protects roof bolters from coal dust exposures. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to optimize the uniformity of airflow distribution across the plenum to achieve the best possible uniformity. A lab experiment validates the CFD model and confirms the ability of this design to reduce floor dust pickup, prevent external wind infiltration, and offer an improved protection efficiency

The conventional mass-balance equations used as constraints can lead to flow estimate values of zero even though the flow estimates should be some positive number. This is because many of the constraint equations are satisfied if the flow rates are zero. The way to overcome the problem is to use a slightly different form of the equations. For example, rather than use the conservation of flow of solids as a constraint it is better to use the constraint that the percentage of solids going into a unit equals the percentage of solids coming out of the unit. Examples are given using mineral processing data sets from Mount Isa, Queensland, and Red Dog, Alaska

Most of the projects summarized in this paper are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Metal-Nonmetal Mining Technology program and are part of the in situ mining subprogram coordinated at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center. The borehole mining equipment development, are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is essential to accelerated progress in the in situ mining subprogram, and some background information on this concept is included. The initial in situ research projects started in 1971-72 evaluated some of the critical blast design parameters for in situ copper leaching. The present program totals about $1 million per year and includes in-house research projects, cooperative (cost-sharing) projects with the mining industry, and research and development contracts. Two different extraction schemes are under investigation: inplace leaching and borehole (or slurry) mining. The principal commodity targets for the Bureau's improved in situ mining technologies include copper, uranium, coal, and potash. The principal purpose of this paper is to inform the mining industry of the in situ mining research recently completed or being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. In addition the Bureau encourages companies to comment on the program accomplishments as well as offer suggestions on top priority research needs for improving the in situ mining methods described in this paper.

The primary (sulphide) resources at Aphrodite are refractory in nature, requiring an oxidation process stage to be introduced to facilitate extraction of the gold. The company is investigating the use of pressure oxidation (POX) as the oxidation method for processing of high grade gold bearing concentrate it plans to produce at Aphrodite. POX has been used extensively around the world for the past 30 years and continues to be the favoured option for a number of refractory gold plants currently in the design and construction stages. Initial pressure oxidisation testing investigated the effect of temperature, pressure and grind size on a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from Alpha lode material. The concentrate averaged 47.3 g/t gold and was prepared from a composite of core samples averaging 1.49 g/t gold. Sub-samples of the concentrate were subjected to POX for 1 hour resulting in rapid oxidation during this very short period. Testing undertaken showed that there was a significant increase in sulphide oxidisation at higher temperature (220°C) and pressure (2,500 k/Pa) for the two grind sizes (75 and 20 microns) evaluated. The proposed flowsheet, OPEX and CAPEX are critical aspects for project development.
