The construction mineral aggregates industry--the largest industry on a tonnage basis--is threatened with large shortages in the near future. Ironically, these common minerals which include sand, gravel, and stone are among the most plentiful in the earth's crust. However, as these minerals are low in value and used in large volumes, they are extremely sensitive to transport cost, e.g., a haul of 20 miles doubled the delivered cost of mineral aggregates. Consequently, these minerals must be located close to points of demand to have economic usefulness. But the development of new deposits is virtually impossible near many urban areas for legal, sociological and economic reasons. The spector of unfinished urban transport systems, curtailed residential construction, and a general deterioration of the physical urban plant, looms as a direct consequent of future mineral aggregate shortages in the U. S. metropolitan areas. The shortages of mineral aggregates in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area (G.N.Y.M.A.) are prototypical of the shortages faced by the U. S. Metropolitan areas. This paper presents an economic analysis of the consequences of not considering the broad aspects of conservation economics as a major component of resource management. The needless annual cost for the G.N.Y.M.A. is shown to be $30 million.

"The selection of equipment for open-pit mining is an important decision which results in a considerable capital expenditure by the operator. The decision is complicated by the wide product range on the market. Certainly, equipment performance is an important criterion to consider in making the decision. Equally important, however, is the operating inter-relationship among the equipment. A poor balance increases production costs and waiting time as queues form at the bottlenecks. This inter-relationship is dependent on equipment performance, but it is also affected by management decisions (i.e. scheduling techniques).The purpose of this paper is to show how the computer is used to decide which equipment and operating decisions achieve the required production objectives at least cost. Actual mining of the pit is simulated over a period of time using different equipment and scheduling decisions. Production, waiting time and costs are evaluated for each alternative until the operator is satisfied that he has achieved the best result."

The clean utilization of the residue containing chloride, CuCl residue, produced from zinc hydrometallurgy is very important for the recycle of valuable metals. And drying is the main process in recycling. In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize operating conditions of the drying of CuCl residue in a convection oven and desirability function used as the methodology for the optimization. Optimization factors were air temperature (80–100°C), material thickness (10–25mm) and process time (80–120min) while investigated responses was final moisture content. The optimum conditions were found to be the temperature of 95.48°C with the material thickness of 13.47mm for the process time of 89.48 min. Under optimum conditions, the predicted moisture content of CuCl residue was 4.11% while the experimental date was 4.13%. The experimental value after process optimization was found to agree satisfactory with the predicted value. After drying, XRD was used to analyze the main phases of CuCl residue. The CuCl residue is made up of CuCl,Cu2O, ZnS and other compounds.

M Y DUTIES, as a member of the Department of Franco-American War Cooperation of the French High Commission were to study the copper and brass industries of America from the mining of the various non-ferrous metals to the semi-finished, or finished materials. In the pursuit of these studies, it was my privilege to visit a number of industries and organizations in different parts of the country. I first visited most of the Eastern copper refineries that were supplying the Allies with vast amounts of metal. These works are producing their material by the multiple or the series process, although the first method predominates. But, regardless of the process employed all the plants attain an exceptionally high standard of quality in their production. One of the points that particularly attracted attention was the manner in which improvements could be traced from the older worlds to the more recent ones. The impression was that, thanks to a spirit of broad-minded cooperation between the principals of the companies and frequent exchanges of views between members of the staffs, all persons interested benefitted by the experience thus gained, to the advantage of the community at large.

Although there are many geologic situations which might be discussed at a session such as this, as I considered the problem, it became apparent to me that I should discuss a situation which has been of concern to me, and should be of concern to the geologic community. As a result, the questions which I will pose, and the criticisms, have not been arrived at quickly or easily, but have accumulated through time, to the point where I feel discussion is necessary. Very briefly let me say that my criticism of geologic mapping, of conclusions reached, and objectives or lack of such, results from my association with many areas where such studies have been completed, and resultingly my inability to comprehend the system of evidence or logic which supports extensive age-formational designations. The heart of the problem is that many conclusions resulting in geologic designations are based on weak or non-existent evidence, and such should be catagorized as hypotheses. Although the geologic community as a group does not approve or disapprove of such designations, it is evident that many or most of such designations attain a "status", and arc accepted as more or less valid statements. As will be shown, the amount of specific lithologic data provided in some quadrangle mapping projects is exceedingly slim. However, of concern herein is that the type of information presented at any stage is sufficient to warrant conclusions drawn. To see the magnitude of the problem, it is probably necessary to review some basic fundamentals upon which our geologic systems are established. The United States Geological Survey has defined a "formation" as the broad unit of geologic mapping consisting of a large and persistent stratum of one kind of rock. Obviously such a designation allows that a formation could be considered "time variant" in a horizontal as well as in a vertical context. However, other definitions enable a formation to mean units

The Minerals Data Source Directory is a compilation of descriptive information on the availability, content, and location of minerals data in the Federal Government. It is intended to assist Government personnel and the general public in locating and acquiring minerals information. Included in the Directory are descriptions of data bases, publications, information systems, and information offices containing data pertaining to ail aspects of mineral production, consumption, trade, and related information. These mineral data sources include the Federal agencies such as the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey whose major mission is the collection and dissemination of mineral information. Also included are agencies such as the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, State, Transportation, and Treasury, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Environ- mental Protection Agency, the Federal Reserve System, the interstate Commerce Commission, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, whose primary mission is the collection of data in nonmineral subject areas, but in which the mineral industry is a component.

The Jewett mine is a surface mine in central Texas, producing about 8,000,000 tons/year of lignite. The mine covers 46,000 acres of land. Approximately 430 people are employed by Northwestern Resources Company and through their efforts, the Jewett Mine is one of the most productive mining operations in the country. The Jewett Mine utilizes a unique structure of staff to convert Operations Research into plans which can be implemented at the "front line" level of the Operations Team. This planning not only makes the mine cost effective and efficient, but promotes creativity in mining, which promotes ongoing research to lower the cost of mining.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. "Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid which has been shown to exhibit antifibrotic activity against silicosis. Tetrandrine is characterized by its strong binding to alveolar macrophages and inhibition of particle-induced respiratory burst activity in these phagocytes. In contrast, tubocurine and tubocurarine are structurally similar to tetrandrine but exhibit little effect on fibrosis or activation of alveolar macrophages. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of tetrandrine on macrophage production of monokines in response to occupational dusts, and to determine tetrandrine's effect on monokine-medicated cell growth using a mouse thymocyte proliferation assay and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a positive control. Stimulation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica dust resulted in a release of monokines which caused a fourfold increase in thymocyte proliferation. Coal dust, on the other hand, had no effect on macrophage production of this cytokine. Tetrandrine was found to exhibit a dose-dependent inhibition of monokine release from both silica and LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages. In experiments where thymocytes were directly treated with tetrandrine, a dose-dependent inhibition of thymocyte proliferation was noted with both interleukin-1- (IL-1) specific and nonspecific mitogenic (concanavalin A) actions. In contrast to the inhibitory potency of tetrandrine, tubocurarine was found to have no effect on either the production of monokines by LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages or IL-I-mediated thymocyte proliferation. These results provide a correlation between the ant:fibrotic effect of tetrandrine and inhibition of macrophage activation. INTRODUCTIONThe pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of occupational dusts has been associated with abnormal activation of alveolar macrophages such as the release of various cytokines capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. These macrophage-derived cytokines include interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-B (TGF-(B), macrophage derived growth factor (MDGF), and interferon [1, 2].Interleukin-1 is a major macrophage-derived cytokine that has been shown to exhibit multiple biological effects on a variety of target cells. It is known to cause leukocyte [3, 4] and endothelial cell activation [5, 6], and to affect the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation [7-9], synthesis of collagens [10] and gluco-saminoglycans [11], and prostaglandin E2 production [12]. In addition, IL-1 plays an important role in the initiation of an immune response through its direct activation of lymphocytes and stimulation of the production of other cytokines, such as interferons and hemopoietic colony-stimulating factors, needed for the expression of an immune response [13]. As a major cytokine in the immune-inflammatory sequela, IL-1 is also produced by epidermal, epithelial, lymphoid, and vascular tissues after infection, injury, or antigenic challenge [14]. Agents such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), immune complexes, and particulates are known to activate the synthesis and release of IL-1 by monocytes and macrophages [15]. These substances also trigger intracellular signals leading to altered arachidonic acid metabolism. Although the mechanism is still not clear, prostaglandins have been shown to suppress IL-1 translation via the induction of cyclic adenosine-monophosphate (CAMP), whereas leukotrienes produce a positive signal for IL-1 production [13]."

THE output of coal from the Province of Alberta reached its peak; in the year 1928, when 7,334,179 tons were produced. Following this, a steady decline was recorded, and in 1930 a low mark of 4,564, 290 tons was made. Since that time, however, the tendency has been upward, and this year (1937) 5,551,682 tons were produced, compared with 5,696, 375 tons in 1936 and 5,462,973 tons in 1935. The value of the output in 1937 was $14,434,969, against $14, 720,004 in 1936. The coals of Alberta have been classed under three heads, viz., domestic, sub-bituminous, and bituminous The domestic (or lignite) and the sub-bituminous coals are used chiefly for domestic purposes, with the possible exception of the smaller sizes and the output of the two stripping pits at Stereo and Coal Valley The bituminous output is used mainly by the railways, for locomotive purposes, which, in 1937, accounted for 80.6 per? cenr of the total sales of bituminous coal. A fair proportion is sold for stationary engine and steam purposes and, in 1937, 25,000 tons were used in making briquettes at plants operated by the Canmore Coal Company, Limited, and Brazeau Collieries, Limited. The International Coal & Coke Company, Limited, used 99,500 tons in their plant at Coleman, for making coke. The bulk of the 66,000 tons of coke produced was sold for use at the smelter at Trail, B.C.

The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.

"The heat transfer conditions on the outer side of a Sirosmelt lance have been determined using experimental measurements in combination with a mathematical model. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wall of an operating Sirosmelt lance, as well as the thickness of the slag layer on it, it was possible to use the model to determine both the heat transfer coefficient between the vessel contents and the lance, as well as the effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer. The effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer was found to be within the range 0.7-1.3 W.m-1. ºCl, which was in good agreement with measured values for magnetite. The outside heat transfer coefficient varied from 80 to ISO W.m-2. ºC1, which was smaller than quoted in the literature for metal/slag systems. The discrepancy was attributed to the high thermal resistance experienced between the lance wall and the slag layer, as well as the large quantities of combustion gases that envelop the lance tip and reduce convection and conduction from the melt to the lance. INTRODUCTIONThe Sirosmelt submerged combustion smelting process [1] utilizes top injection lances to deliver fuel and air into a metallurgical melt. To help prevent lance failure from attack by liquid slag, helical vane swirlers are used within the annular lance to impart swirl to the flowing air and enhance the heat transfer from the lance wall to the air. The swirlers thus cool the wall, and enable a frozen layer of slag to form on its outer surface. This solid layer ensures liquid slag cannot reach the lance surface, and the lance is protected.A mathematical model of the heat transfer processes associated with the lance has been developed, which combines heat balance equations with engineering correlations to predict the wall and cooling air temperature of the lance, as well as the air pressure distribution. An account of the model was given by Rankin et al. [2]. To further enhance the model and enable it to predict the thickness of slag accumulating on the lance, a detailed analysis of the heat flow through the slag layer commenced in 1992. The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed a patented membrane-based ion fractionation system, which specifically separates copper from gold and silver species in a cyanide matrix. This Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS?) system was pilot demonstrated on the 82,000 liters of pregnant leach solution' (PLS) generated from tailings, via thin layer leaching, at a mine site in Durango State, Mexico. The EMS? recovered ~90% of the gold-silver cyano-complex to a 90% volume permeate (based upon an EMS? feed stream of 100% volume) while rejecting -90% of the copper cyano-complex to a \0% (by volume) concentrate. The EMS? technology combines pore-size specific electro-statically charged membranes with engineered materials of construction and application-specific operational design that reject multi-valent, ionically charged species to the concentrate and transmit mono-valent species through the membrane to the permeate. The 850 ppm Cu PLS contained approximately 0.8 gil free NaCN with, the copper cyano-omplex principally in the CU(CN)3 and CU(CN)4 forms. The gold grade of the PLS was -2 ppm Au. The ~LS calcium concentration at -700 ppm Ca was reduced to ISO ppm.Ca (± 50 ppm) by sodium cycle ion exchange pre-treatrnent prior to EMS? processing.

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. THE year 1929 was exceedingly busy and prosperous for the iron and steel industry in the United States. The lake shipments of ore were approximately 65,000,000 tons, steel ingots produced were about 57,000,000 tons. Plants were very active. operating for many months well over their rated capacity, slowing down during the last quarter following the severe break in the stock market. The ore tonnage mentioned above was the greatest ever shipped by lake from the Lake Superior region. The trend at the ore mines has been to supplement manual labor by mechanical appliances as much as possible. Mining methods have been greatly improved along the lines of safety as well as to increase the percentage of ore recovery. Crushing and grading of iron ores continued to gain in popularity inasmuch as remarkable blast-furnace operations and records were obtained with sizing and uniformity of raw materials. Progress was made along other lines. The Bradley process for the separation of manganese osicle and iron oside from siliceous manganiferous iron ore was cleuelopecl; also considerable work was clone on a process for the beneficiation of the Cuban laterite ores. Sintering of ores and concentrates increased in popularity. A new analytical method for the deter- mination of sulfur in iron ore was worked out which reduced the time required appreciably. The ore re- serves of the Lake Superior district continued to receive considerable attention and played an important part in the recent mergers which have taken place in the iron ancl steel industry.
